Having the freedom to explore new hairstyles is a huge part of a black womans creative self expression. However, when working in TV and Broadcast Media, creating content promoted to millions of viewers from both inside and outside of your own community, the question of how you want to be perceived and understood is one that will have to be asked.During this interview I will unpack the experience of popular black British female TV Presenter, Scarlette Douglas, who much like many of us, wants to try new looks and hairstyles, showcasing the beauty of her natural hair one day and the variety of braids, bantu knots or extensions the next, whilst still protecting the health of her hair AND progressing and flourishing in her career. We discuss the power of visibility and representation in the media for younger generations of talented people of colour that are looking for faces that are reminiscent of their own, and dig into what we feel needs to change in the landscape of TV to perpetuate an ongoing positive narrative for the black community who may themselves strive to one day also see themselves in the media.FOLLOW SCARLETTE ON SOCIALS:INSTAGRAMFOLLOW TEXTURE TALKS ON SOCIALS:INSTAGRAM TIKTOK WEBSITESPONSORS:INSTAGRAM WEBSITE Teresa and Eleanore Richardson from Fulham Scalp and Hair Clinic are an absolutely INCREDIBLE black female mother daughter led team of highly experienced Consultant Trichologists who since 2011 have provided the afro and curly haired community with help, support and guidance to get our hair care journeys back on track. As such highly respected Afro hair Trichologists I couldn't think of a better sponsor to partner with on the next segment of Texture Talks and to guide me personally on my own natural hair care journey.Learn more about them at www.fulhamscalphairclinic.com and use discount code TEXTURETALKS5 for 5% off your consultation fee.
In this episode, Seth interviews Neel Khosa from AMSYSCO, a post-tensioning supplier, to introduce post-tensioning and its history. Post-tensioning is a form of concrete reinforcement that uses high-strength steel cables inside concrete. It is about five times stronger than conventional rebar and is used in pre-stressed concrete. Unbonded post-tensioning is the standard for high-rise construction and large concrete structures in the US. The advantages of post-tensioning include material savings, reduced construction time, improved seismic behavior, and reduced deflections and vibrations. The future of post-tensioning includes its use in office buildings and the development of new systems. Recently the state space models (SSMs) with efficient hardware-aware designs, i.e., Mamba, have shown great potential for long sequence modeling. Building efficient and generic vision backbones purely upon SSMs is an appealing direction. However, representing visual data is challenging for SSMs due to the position-sensitivity of visual data and the requirement of global context for visual understanding. In this paper, we show that the reliance of visual representation learning on self-attention is not necessary and propose a new generic vision backbone with bidirectional Mamba blocks (Vim), which marks the image sequences with position embeddings and compresses the visual representation with bidirectional state space models. On ImageNet classification, COCO object detection, and ADE20k semantic segmentation tasks, Vim achieves higher performance compared to well-established vision transformers like DeiT, while also demonstrating significantly improved computation&memory efficiency. For example, Vim is 2.8$times$ faster than DeiT and saves 86.8% GPU memory when performing batch inference to extract features on images with a resolution of 1248$times$1248. The results demonstrate that Vim is capable of overcoming the computation&memory constraints on performing Transformer-style understanding for high-resolution images and it has great potential to become the next-generation backbone for vision foundation models. Code is available at https://github.com/hustvl/Vim. 2024: Lianghui Zhu, Bencheng Liao, Qian Zhang, Xinlong Wang, Wenyu Liu, Xinggang Wang https://arxiv.org/pdf/2401.09417v1.pdf

Visual design is an important element in value creation, especially in telling a brand's or a business's story in a way that engages with customers and communicates shared values. Visual designers are multi-talented artists and storytellers with an acute understanding of customers and their emotional responses to visual cues. Our guest this week is Jacqueline Porter, an accomplished professional in her field and a very successful business owner in her own right. We explored the business of design and creativity from the challenges within design education, and the drawbacks of rigid design frameworks and the value of subjective, creative approaches. A notable reference to a transitional figure in design Steve Jobs shows how simplicity and creativity - rules and no-rules - can work together. The conversation moves to the realm of implementation in branding, exploring the delicate and shifting balance between fixed and flexible elements. Jacqueline advocates for constant evolution, telling a story with a dynamic interplay between exploration and exploitation for sustained success. Consistency is achieved with creativity, empathy, and adaptability.Resources: https://www.jacquelineportercreative.com/Shownotes:0:00 | Intro02:28 | Jacqueline's Defines Visual Design: Inclusions, Exclusions and Importance03:54 | Nike Example: What Represents a Good Design?05:32 | Jacqueline on Branding: Advertising's Impact06:54 | Professional Approach: Visual and Wood Synergy in Business09:28 | Clients Don't Know What They Want: Process VS magic11:02 | Lum Spirits Story15:51 | Color Palette: First Step for Visual Representation of Lum Brand20:09 | Visual Design Mastery: Empathy, Psychology and Branding21:23 | History of Rules VS No Rules22:54 | Newtonian Economic Thinking and Bauhaus Analogies24:42 | Steve Jobs Simplicity is a Transitional Example26:27 | Designer Examples: Getting Outside of the Box29:05 | Crack is Wack32:22 | Implementation of Design34:50 | Wrap Up: Fixed and Flexible Idea
The Large Vision-Language Model (LVLM) has enhanced the performance of various downstream tasks in visual-language understanding. Most existing approaches encode images and videos into separate feature spaces, which are then fed as inputs to large language models. However, due to the lack of unified tokenization for images and videos, namely misalignment before projection, it becomes challenging for a Large Language Model (LLM) to learn multi-modal interactions from several poor projection layers. In this work, we unify visual representation into the language feature space to advance the foundational LLM towards a unified LVLM. As a result, we establish a simple but robust LVLM baseline, Video-LLaVA, which learns from a mixed dataset of images and videos, mutually enhancing each other. Video-LLaVA achieves superior performances on a broad range of 9 image benchmarks across 5 image question-answering datasets and 4 image benchmark toolkits. Additionally, our Video-LLaVA also outperforms Video-ChatGPT by 5.8%, 9.9%, 18.6%, and 10.1% on MSRVTT, MSVD, TGIF, and ActivityNet, respectively. Notably, extensive experiments demonstrate that Video-LLaVA mutually benefits images and videos within a unified visual representation, outperforming models designed specifically for images or videos. We aim for this work to provide modest insights into the multi-modal inputs for the LLM. 2023: Bin Lin, Bin Zhu, Yang Ye, Munan Ning, Peng Jin, Li Yuan https://arxiv.org/pdf/2311.10122v2.pdf

"I'm a Berlin-born, Brussels-raised, gender-fluid, queer photographer that currently resides and creates in New York City. So far, my path in photography has taken me through play, trauma, uprooting, coming out, identification, and spirituality and has taught me precious lessons about the visual representation of marginalized groups, gender expression, and the fragility of social constructs. Through my work, I look for an intricate connection with each of my subjects. I explore social and personal topics such as sexuality, tokenism, and identity with the aim to guide my audience's perspective and awaken awareness within their personal perception. Through this, I hope to not only evoke the observation of a subject but the deeply personal involvement of the observer.Since I was 7 years old I have strived for alignment of my head, eye, and heart through the tool of my craft."https://www.sophiekietzmann.com/Exhibitions: ”Pink Matter” 2022, YSL Store Paris & LA”Just Women” 2022, Imagination Paris"Les Nouveau Romantiques" 2021, Galerie No. 8, Paris “All in This Together” Photo Vogue Festival 2020, Milan "When Ethics Meets Aesthetics" Vogue Italy 2018, Milan"Anaesthetics" BTK 2018, Berlin

This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Ashley Eakin. Ashley is a director and writer in Hollywood who is at the forefront of disability representation. We speak about her short "Single" & "Forgive us our tresspasses", which are on Netflix. Forgive us our tresspasses is about Aktion T4 a regime that was implemented by Hitler in 1939 which saw the murder of 300,000 disabled people and the sterilization of a further 400,000. This secret program developed gas chamber technology used in concentration camps in WW2. She talks openly about being a disabled woman, how she has found it a struggle for the majority of her life and how her chronic condition is rare. In 2017, her video on SoulPancake "That Moment" went viral regarding her disability, and from there saw her work be guided towards disability representation. Finding a community for her was so vital and how having this community and showing up for them has become a large factor in her life. She talks about the process of writting and shooting forgive us our tresspasses and how the story came about, the shooting of it . This conversation is so powerful when talking of representation and how seeing the physical representation is so important. In this episode you will hear: About sushi syndrome About connecting in the disability community the positives of social media Medical diagnosis of disability and societal diagnosis of disability Expressing emotions Enjoyed this show? Tell us your favourite moment by connecting with Brooke via https://www.instagram.com/disabledandproudpodcast/ About This Show: Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Each week this podcast highlights an awesome disabled guest speaking about their own disability; why they are proud to be disabled and why they are proud to be themselves. The conversations in this show will look at what challenges these amazing people face socially, mentally, physically and life in general. This show is raw, open, honest, funny, welcoming and educational. Disabled & Proud does exactly what is says on the tin! And whilst we are creating this space for disabled people to be unashamedly themselves, without need to conform for society, this is also not about toxic positivity. This show will be shining a big, bright light on disability without it being “Paralympic or pity”. As you will hear disability is WHOLE, COMPLETE & PERFECT and whilst the topic of disability can be quite heavy - and we definitely don't shy away from the bad days - this podcast is also about having fun too! Our aim is to play a part in reclaiming the word disability - turning it from inadequacy to perfection!

Wishing you nothing but improvement and the best for you in 2022! Closing out 2021, we wanted to enter 2022 by recapping the story of James Webb Space Telescope as a beacon of hope that even with struggle, difficulty, and decades of doubt - humans can still perform great acts and complete the goals set out before them. After the successful Christmas day launch, the assembly process on the way to 1 million miles away from earth continues to be successful. Some of the most difficult moments are behind with more to come... The journey to getting this astronomical marvel off planet and into space was a saga in its own right. It really resonated with me about what life is like as a human being on this planet called Earth. This week we discuss how similar the challenges that JWST faced is to what we face in today's world. There are so many lessons to take away that we can use to understand the struggle we go through in a post-pandemic world. Struggle may exist, but performing at the moment you need to is critical, and we have NASA, ESA, and CSA to thank for adding more life to the space telescope as it makes its way to L2. We also try to discuss Lagrange Points, and what they are and why they are important. I do my best to make things simple, but of course, its not that simple to begin with. Bear with me as I discuss this 2 body phenomena, and share what lessons I took away from 2021, and the actions I hope to continue in 2022. Happy New Year - and to building a fantastic future! Off Topic cast discuss the impact that Social Media has on todays society and our identity. Why is it bad? Is it good? Do we actually need it?
We have all seen the graphic that represents the COVID-19 virus cell. But just how accurate are these depictions? There is a strong relation between reality and this image, as the characteristic spike we see in pictures exists in real COVID cells, although slightly differently. This spike is what enables the virus to penetrate a victim's cell walls, and any effective vaccine will most assuredly combat this danger through imitation.
What is love? Baby don't hurt me...If half of marriages end in divorce, what is the point? Does marriage still matter? What if there is a purpose for marriage, beyond a husband and wife, and a happy life? Something deep in our core longs for connection and fulfillment, but it doesn't come the way we think it does. Join us Sunday online or in-person at 9 or 11 am as we open the infamous marriage passage in Ephesians 5 and look at God's vision for marriage.

We’ve spent the last five episodes talking with artists and curators about the power of the female gaze, and how important it is to give it space in exhibitions like THE WAY SHE LOOKS, showing at the Ryerson Image Centre right now. In our final episode, it’s time to look to the future. What’s next in this important field of visual art? What does the next generation of artists and sitters need in their toolboxes to keep expanding the diversity and representation of African women behind and in front of the camera? This podcast is generously supported by Allan Slaight and Emmanuelle Gattuso.
After a much-needed break, the Afterparty is back! Climate change is an important and somewhat controversial topic. 16-year old activist Greta Thunberg's passionate speech to the United Nations has placed the issue in the headlines once again. What are we to make of climate change? To what extent is our planet changing? To what extent is natural, and to what extent is it caused by humans? How should Christian think theologically about this issue? Kevin sits down with Meteorologist, Anthony Brown to talk about it all! Jamie and Mike will be back with Kevin in our next episode. Stories connect us. They help us relate to each other and deepen our understanding of experiences in our lives. Analogies can give us an entirely different perspective, and help us create a more visual representation of emotional experiences. I wrote the following analogy to help me put things in perspective when I was having a hard time in a job that was not only a bad fit for me and my skills, it was a job that I allowed to sink into my confidence and health. Each time I re-read it, I am reminded to think about where I am, where I want to be, and how I want to get there. Analogies can be silly or serious, and sometimes a little of both. If you can make an analogy both, you will connect with your audience, bringing out common expressions of hope and frustration in a highly visual, imaginative way. When I was at the end of my patience with my job, I reached out to a few mentors for help. I asked one friend to visit with me and provide ideas and guidance; I hoped for concrete advice. What I got was not at all what I had envisioned and as I walked out of her office I thought it had been a waste of my lunch break. Lucky for me, the year had been one of tremendous growth, personally and professionally, so instead of leaving my thoughts there, I realized there had to be a reason I went seeking her guidance. I knew there must have been something in the conversation I could use and apply to my recent experiences. And when I gave myself time to process the words she used, I realized she gave me the beginning of an analogy I could apply, re-apply, and continue to reinvent to serve different situations. She said: "Sometimes I feel like I'm in my car on the highway, stuck behind a big truck. I look up at the end car on the car carrier and pray it doesn't fall off the trailer onto my head." It took a few days, but then I realized how her analogy applied to my situation: For months I had been driving my car along the highway, stuck behind a big truck. Because I have a tendency toward being impulsive (don't laugh), I had been driving very close to the back of the truck. I had been so incredibly frustrated being stuck there, so I kept swerving out to check for an opportunity to pass the truck, only to find a blind curve or a line of vehicles coming toward me, so I had to swerve back behind the truck, more and more angry and impatient. Not only was I angry and frustrated and feeling all the muscles and tendons in my neck get more painful and stiff, I was making everyone else in the car uncomfortable. I was driving so close to the truck that I couldn’t see anything I was passing outside the car, the beautiful landscapes I was driving through were lost to me. All I could see was the dust and debris the truck was kicking up into my windshield, and I was breathing the fumes coming out the back. I missed the music playing on my radio and the conversations going on in the backseat, conversations that were precious and unlikely to happen again. I was driving so close that the inexperienced (and mean) truck driver was driving even more erratically, making significant and dangerous errors because he was watching my car come so close. I had choices to make. I could keep swerving to check whether I had an opportunity to pass, not really caring whether the opportunity took me toward a positive destination, or I could sit back in my seat and get a little space between me and the back of the truck. I could keep being frustrated and sometimes angry at that damn truck in front of me, or I could make some space between us so I could see opportunities from a distance and gauge whether they might be right for me and my passengers. I could choose to see the truck much more clearly by giving it room, so I could learn more about it and be able to avoid trouble, and maybe even help if necessary. I wasn’t in denial, I knew the truck would cloud my view here and there, kicking up big gusts and clouds of snow and rain, and that I wouldn’t always be able to keep from getting frustrated. But with the space I was creating between me and the truck, I could at least try to enjoy the music, the view, the passengers in my car. Eventually, that truck was going to get off the highway, or I was going to find a good opportunity to pass. I couldn’t get off the highway at the next exit because there were people in the car that were relying on me to keep on truckin', so to speak. And as one of my dearest friends said "you have great company in the car!" My sister would say that I have always lived my life knowing that it is not about the destination, but about the journey... So here I am, driving my car and (usually) making better choices, enjoying the view, including some interesting and sometimes dangerous and frustrating weather. I'll keep on driving behind the truck until I find the right opportunity for me and my passengers, I'll continue to be grateful for the comfort of my friends and family traveling with me, and I'll most definitely sit back and enjoy the music. What's your truck right now? Have there been bigger trucks in your way? How will you handle the next slow-moving truck you're stuck behind?
In this episode we discuss Melchizedek in the Bible. Not necessarily from a historical perspective, but the nature of the relationship he had with Abram (Abraham). The nature of that relationship has a direct connection as to why the priesthood of the Lord is tied to it. It's this relationship that will aid those of use who need to see godly representation in bodily form.
Does your favorite game from 10 years ago still look good today? Does it matter if the gameplay or story is "timeless"? How are these things prioritized for us? Let's talk about it on this week's episode.

Molecular Aesthetics | Symposium Symposium at ZKM | Center for Art and Media, July 15 -17, 2011 in cooperation with DFG-Center for Functional Nanostructures (CFN) Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT). How and why are biomedia employed in the field of (media) art? Whilst the technosciences themselves have increasingly become potent producers of aesthetic visualizations, do artists just want to make rival use of the epistemic power of the image? Or do they rather use wetware at the molecular or cellular level in order to short-circuit semiotic procedures of representation by staging and voluntarily emphasizing the very authenticity of their biological subjects, objects, processes or systems? The artistic use of biomedia as means of expression takes advantage of the high degree of non-fictitious believability, truthfulness and manifest corporality of their status as real biological entities, potentially living or stemming from life, and thus resembling the viewers of this art themselves. But while their real, apparent, or at least potential a/liveness first prompts the viewer's feeling of immediacy, the underlying mediality and technological constructedness of these displays is more slowly, cryptically revealed and addressed. Therefore, the apparent visual and diegetic core of biotechnological artworks needs to be carefully analyzed, beyond a purely image-based hermeneutic approach, on the basis of the artistic media themselves with their respective phenomenological impacts and their epistemic nexuses. Features that once unfolded primarily as artistic images are today being remediated, dispersed and fragmented into a confusing multitude of media. Here, mediation and technologies are no longer employed merely to achieve an aesthetic effect. They are themselves fully-integrated elements of the aesthetic idiom. Indeed, biomedia's potential to produce, destabilize and deconstruct authenticity can be seen in the light of two complementary and well-established mechanisms in art history: Illusionism, which can be considered the simulation of an authentic presence that appears even to share a physical space with the viewer, and indexicality, on the other hand, which acknowledges that cultural products per se obey sign modalities and hence induce degrees of representation. /// Symposium im ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, 15. -17.
