This week, we have a jam-packed episode featuring five of our colleagues from a 2022 American Association of Law Libraries panel on APIs. Emily Rushing, Director of Competitive Intelligence, Haynes and Boone, LLP Pam Noyd, Information Resources Manager at Foley & Lardner LLP Erik Adams, Manager of Library Digital Initiatives Manager of Library Digital Initiatives at Sidley Austin LLP, and Chief of Technology at Golden Arrow Publishing LLC Keli Whitnell, Director of Firm Intelligence at Troutman Pepper Christopher O'Connor, Senior Director, Product Management at LexisNexis APIs, or Application Programming Interfaces, have become an increasingly important tool in the legal industry. The panel included members with diverse backgrounds and perspectives, including both librarians and non-librarians. This diversity provided a holistic view of the topic, covering everything from the technical aspects of using APIs to the importance of data quality and vetting vendors. APIs are like building blocks for legal solutions (think: LEGO Blocks), allowing for the flexible sharing of data between different computer environments. This enables more creative solutions than vendors could create on their own and has led to a range of innovative legal solutions. Overall, the panel provided valuable insights into the use of APIs in the legal industry and highlighted their potential for facilitating more efficient and effective legal work. As the use of API's continues to grow, it will be important for legal professionals to stay up to date on the latest developments and best practices in this area. Links Mentioned: Afraid of APIs? Implementing APIs for Law Firm Data Requires Soft Skills as Well How To Evaluate and Get Started with Data APIs If Data is the New Gold, then Law Libraries are a Goldmine: Panning for Gold with APIs Crystal Ball Question: Brad Blickstein discusses the potential for a recession and its effects on the legal industry. He speculates that Alternative Legal Service Providers (ALSPs) will benefit from the downturn, as law departments will be unable to increase headcount. He also discusses the question of where the work done by ALSPs will go once the recession ends and whether law firms will be able to regain the work. TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH PATRI FRIEDMAN How can you stack different legal jurisdictions to maximize your freedom? What is the number one investment trend in the world that no one is talking about? Which country, at the edge of the world, is truly pushing the envelope in the field of governance, and what can you do to take advantage of the situation? How can looking at laws, the same way we look at software code, be the breakthrough that restores liberty to the world? Where do modern flag theory and charter cities meet? What are all smart, savvy investors betting on in the future? Where are innovators looking to next in the world, and what can you do to get involved? I think this is such a great episode to listen to. Don't miss this one.
Today I speak with Mandy Birch. Mandy is a hugely accomplished person with a background that is impressive in its breadth (Air Force Academy, distinguished military career, experience in the field, brilliant engineering studies, entrepreneur) and also depth (with senior leadership experience of large cohorts under situations of crises, successful complex change management, deep literacy in Quantum Computing). But it's Mandy's wisdom that I'm drawn to the most, her composure under stress, her confidence in going against the grain and her ability to think both in the present and a few steps ahead. I hope you'll enjoy this conversation as much as I did.Recorded on 7 July 2022.Instagram: @at.the.coalfaceConnect with Mandy Birch on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/mandybirch.And don't forget to subscribe to At the Coalface for new episodes every two weeks.Support the show
Whether we realize it or not, intervals inform our perception of the everyday sounds of our lives. It is an interval that makes our national anthem unique, lets you know you're in trouble with your mother, and gets your attention through a train whistle or siren. This episode talks about something I guarantee that you will be dealing with TODAY. Real time podcast help is on the way. You won't like it, but here it is: You will be tempted to sin today. The greek literally is stumbling blocks. So that is where the LEGO visual comes in. Basically, Jesus says that there are going to be LEGO BLOCKS on your barefooted path today. He says they are SURE. Welcome to humanity. So now what? What principles do I have to HELP ME with this lego-infested journey?First, don't be scattering MORE Lego blocks for your fellow travelers. Woe to that guy.Second, be in fellowship; in Christian Community. Why? You are gonna need some help. How do I know if I am in Christian Community? Is calling a sin a sin, and repentance and forgiveness a regular part of that group? If not, you are probably in a social club like the Kiwanis or something. So yes, Legos on your path are SURE. Let's make our awareness SURE. Let's make our involvement in real community SURE. Let's make our carefulness SURE. Let's make our REPENTANCE SURE. Let's make our forgiveness SURE. Listen because you are going to step on a LEGO later today and this might help. Please subscribe at www.bewithme.us
Dan Mann is a core board builder who describes the merits of Sandwich Construction in Surfboard Design as a 'lego blocks' process where different materials can be swapped in and out for desired strength, weight and flex. The key benefit to Sandwich Construction as he describes it is the ability to "make a really light surfboard that is also really strong". It's an innovation that Firewire was built on and a part of the brands core DNA today. Dan's new shape, the Dominator II landed at surf shops around the world last week, and Dan shares much in this episode about the design and build process, as well as what its been like to surf with California Aerialist Kevin Shultz on the Dominator II.

The AWS Migration tooling segment team has invented migration tool packages that serve three key business objectives. First, technology choice, using competent tools from our ecosystem and AWS migration platform, with a tool recommender that help customers identify the right tools to achieve their business objectives. Next, speed of procurement, with "Single click" to procure the tools right from AWS Marketplace. Finally, the cost of migration, with highly discounted tools that reduce the cost of migration by 25 - 30%. In this session, we explain how our customers and SI partners can leverage these packages to enable the frictionless migration of thousands of workloads into AWS.

Around the world of fitness and health, you'll many times find people telling you to follow the 80/20 rule. "80% of the time eat a healthy diet and exercise and 20% of the time you can goof off and still receive the results you want." But as humans, we often strive for perfection. Then when we aren't perfect, we beat ourselves up. Success isn't an overnight thing. Like building a LEGO tower, it takes one piece at a time, stacked one by one on top of the other to finish the tower. Perfection is a noble goal and I will never fault someone for giving it their all. I'd rather than someone strive for mediocrity. But how do you battle the guilt when it rears its ugly head after a weekend or week long diet debacle? In this episode, I'll break out some math to help you better understand that one day, or a couple of days, won't hurt you long term. 80/20 principle (Pareto Principle) Breaking down the math of the 80/20 principle 73 days Late night pizza 10 1/2 weeks Feeling guilty for cheating on your diet You are not a failure Consistency Weddings, meatballs, and booze Tanner Baze Get back on the horse Tou’re going to have bad days, great days, and meh days The Vortex The nobility of striving for perfection Put in the work The grind of the quest Choices you made today aren’t the choices you have to make today I have the choice Forgive yourself and get back on track LEGOs are build one piece at a time
