George VI George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death in 1952. He was concurrently the last Emperor of India until August 1947, when the British Raj was dissolved. The future George VI was born in the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria; he was named Albert at birth after his great-grandfather Albert, Prince Consort, and was known as "Bertie" to his family and close friends. His father ascended the throne as George V in 1910. As the second son of the king, Albert was not expected to inherit the throne. He spent his early life in the shadow of his elder brother, Prince Edward, the heir apparent. Albert attended naval college as a teenager and served in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force during the First World War. In 1920, he was made Duke of York. He married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, and they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. In the mid-1920s, he engaged speech therapist Lionel Logue to treat his stammer, which he learned to manage to some degree. His elder brother ascended the throne as Edward VIII after their father died in 1936, but Edward abdicated later that year to marry the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. As heir presumptive to Edward VIII, Albert thereby became the third monarch of the House of Windsor, taking the regnal name George VI. In continuing our theme of fealty of knights in service of kings, we have a different sort of "knight" this week, Carie and Ross cover Tom Hooper's Academy Award Winning film, The King's Speech (2010). Ross divulges all the tea shared between King George VI (or "Bertie") and his elocution coach, Lionel Logue who landed his own title in chivalry under the British crown. Carie groans at the protocol of royal life, Ross gives us the cliffnotes on the David arc from the Crown, and the siblings appreciate the power of a well-timed speech in a not well time at all.  Related Media: The Real King's Speech - King George VI - September 3, 1939 Copyright 2022 Sorry Mom Productions

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 2010 British historical drama film "The King's Speech" directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Inspired by actual events, the films stars Colin Firth as Prince Albert, Duke of York - the future King George VI - who struggles to cope with a stammer that he has had since he was a child, which over time has lead to him experiencing moments of discomfort while performing the mandatory public speaking addresses that he is required to make as a part of his royal duties. In an attempt to seek out a treatment for the Duke of York's condition, his wife, Elizabeth (played by Helena Bonham Carter), persuades him to see the Australian-born Lionel Logue (played by Geoffrey Rush), a non-medically trained speech defects therapist, who almost immediately insists on calling the Duke of York the same name that his family members call him, "Bertie", and who over time demonstrates effective speech therapy techniques that help Bertie overcome his stammering. Against the backdrop of the death of Bertie's father, King George V, the coronation and the subsequent abdication of Bertie's brother David (King Edward VIII), and Britain's declaration of war on Germany in 1939, Bertie must work to traverse feelings of unworthiness, the potential damage to the royal family as a result of his father dying and his brother's selfish act of abdication so that he could be with the notorious Wallis Simpson (played by Eve Best), while working together with Lionel Logue to enable him to find a way to not allow his stammer to define him and debilitate him from rising to the occasion of becoming King and having to address and be a beacon of hope for the British people as they face the looming threat of World War. The film also stars Guy Pearce as King Edward VIII, Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill, Derek Jacobi as Cosmo Gordon Lang, Jennifer Ehle as Myrtle Logue, Michael Gambon as King George V, as well as a cast of other wonderfully gifted actors who play characters and depictions of recognisable real life people who have influenced the world. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

One of the long-forgotten stories of local history starts long ago in the small WA town of York, not far from Perth, and ends far away in Hollywood, the centre of film-making in the Western world. It was in York that a young woman named Enid Bennett was born as the eldest of three sisters. These three sisters would by a strange set of circumstances each end up in Hollywood as stars of the silent movie industry and move into the talkies era, and in one case into television right up to the 1980s. Along the way the sisters’ journeys includes their father Frank Bennett’s role as a private school headmaster in Perth, and the founding of Guildford Grammar School on the banks of the Swan River at the turn of the 20th century. And one of the famous names in the story is that of Lionel Logue, who we now remember was the speech teacher for King George VI, portrayed in the film The King’s Speech by Geoffrey Rush. Author Ron Banks joined us on “Remember When” to tell us more about the York girl turned Hollywood star. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tanta imprecisione sotto porta, svarioni tattici in modo particolare a livello difensivo e molta confusione. This is the most important”.Annuncio e monito per tutti, compagni ed avversari.

Normally I disagree with the Academy's choice for movie of the year, but not this time. I watched The King's Speech this weekend and enjoyed it on many levels. Of the many topics we could discuss about this movie, I want to keep the conversation related to a familiar subject, communication. Based on the true story of King George VI, this movie follows his journey to seek help from Lionel Logue, a commoner and speech therapist, to overcome his speech impediment and find his voice as King. Here you have a Royal Monarch who is insecure and lacking self confidence. On the other hand, you have a speech therapist confident in his ability to get results. King George knew that his ability to communicate would determine his success to lead and strengthen his country through the impending war. He humbled himself to get help. Sometimes we all need help. Are you humble enough to ask? Lionel Logue was a commoner with no credentials, certifications or special degrees. He did have the confidence and ability to get results. Regardless of where you are in life, you have skills and abilities that the world needs. Are you developing those skills? Are you getting results? Have a great week! Pierce “Waiting is a trap. There will always be reasons to wait. The truth is, there are only two things in life, reasons and results, and reasons simply don't count.” ~ Dr. Robert Anthony “There are two kinds of people in the world: those who make excuses and those who get results. An excuse person will find any excuse for why a job was not done, and a results person will find any reason why it can be done. Be a creator, not a reactor.” ~ Alan Cohen
