"The dance floor is a portal and a transmission tool in addition to being a technology of togetherness." The British author's new book, Dance Your Way Home, offers a sociocultural history of the dance floor. Emma Warren has been documenting grassroots music culture since co-founding Jockey Slut magazine in the mid '90s. From those early years to subsequent stints at THE FACE and Brixton's youth-run Live Magazine, her journey of personal growth has become intertwined with nightlife. In this episode, the UK author speaks with Aaron Gonsher, former editor-in-chief of the now-defunct Red Bull Music Academy, about her new book, Dance Your Way Home: A Journey Through The Dance Floor. Writing about how music thrives through in-person connections and physical spaces, she provides a social history of the dance floor while highlighting the power of communion. Their conversation is a fascinating and far-ranging one; they speak about writing from the heart and Warren's deep connections with nightlife communities. She also talks about how the dance floor acted as a palliative in times of personal strife. "As I was writing [the book] and working it out through the writing, I realised that the less my dad could move or had control over his body, the more I needed to dance and have control over mine," she says of her father's disability. "So, I feel this absolute connection to the strength which you bring on the dance floor: that core control, that tightening of your body, that loosening of your limbs when you're moving and just how important that was to me—and what a life saver, really." Warren is also the author of three other books, including Make Some Space: Tuning Into Total Refreshment Centre, Document Your Culture: A Manual and Steam Down: Or How Things Begin. Listen to the conversation to hear her thoughts on why we dance together and what dancing tells us about ourselves.
Today we are talking with Sam Conniff. To our listeners Sam is probably best known as the author of Be More Pirate, which he calls a love letter to change-makers and rule-breakers. But Sam has so much more on his list of accomplishments, from co-founding the youth-led, purpose-driven, multi-multi-award-winning social enterprising marketing agency Livity, to Digify Africa, Live Magazine, somehwereto, Dont Panic, Dubplate Drama, and Uncertainty Experts (which after taking the online quiz I now know I have a low tolerance to uncertainty), Sam has been out in the world creating good trouble and leading many a social rebellions. We are so excited to finally be chatting with Sam, our OG pirate captain, today on the 100th episode of Pirate Living Podcast, which only seems fitting since Be More Pirate has been our inspiration not only for this podcast and everything it stands for, but for the changes that we have both made to chart our own courses in life. Today, we're joined by Roseli Ilano, Director of Community and Partnerships at Pop-Up Magazine Productions, a live magazine that creates multisensory experience events for stages, screens, and live audiences in theaters where nothing is recorded or ever produced to be played later online. Community events are a great way to create novel experiences for your audience and can lead to professional and personal connections. Organize a time at your event for face-to-face interaction with all contributors (if restrictions allow) so that they can directly address any questions or concerns. When passing on the responsibility to super fans, help them organize their own local version of your events and offer the full support of your teams. Community is also very different from marketing. Marketing is the one-way sharing of messages specific to a brand by the brand itself. A community helps the brand's audience organize and provides a space for solving problems, finding great connections, and sharing ideas that help raise the profile of the brand's products/services. A virtual community experience expands your reach and your community globally.

Our special guest this week is Sam Conniff Allende. Sam is known for many things. He is co-founder and former CEO of Livity, Don't Panic and Live Magazine and has mentored thousands of young entrepreneurs around the world. He is an acclaimed public speaker, an advocate of - what he calls - ‘business as unusual' through which he has helped brands such as Red Bull, Unilever and PlayStation develop radical approaches to social impact and ethical practice. His international awards and prizes include EY's Entrepreneur Of The Year and he has been named a Global CSR Leader. In 2017, shortly before standing down having been at the helm of Livity for 17 years, Sam and his team won the British Interactive Media Association's prestigious Grand Prix for its values-led reinvention of the marketing agency model - one that many have copied since. Sam talks to Richard Freeman, who first came across him at Livity 5 or 6 years ago, when he won the contract to help deliver their Big Lottery funded ‘somewhere to' project across South East England. The aim of that project was to unlock unused space in owns and cities for young people to use for creative and enterprise pursuits. They didn't meet, but Richard saw that Sam's stamp was very clear on the design and message of the programme. Sam's book Be More Pirate, or How To Take On The World and Win, is published by Penguin Random House this month and is a manifesto for each of us to create the sort of Good Trouble the world needs. We recorded this conversation in early March 2018 in a rare moment when diaries allowed for it. There are a few technical issues at the start, but stick with it and it gets a bit better. Amongst many other things, Sam and Richard talk about his intriguing claim that pirates were misunderstood agents of change, leadership and social innovation - and why he is so certain that today's young people can - and should - follow suit and disrupt everything. And why this idea makes him so happy.
