Music-journalist veterans Wayne Bledsoe and Chuck Campbell have been to their share of concerts, for better and worse, and in this episode of "How We Heard It" they share stories from the trenches. Hear about Bob Dylan's brush with death in Knoxville, the crowd turning on the Beastie Boys in Orlando, Madonna's groundbreaking show in Miami and a bizarre night in Atlanta with the Sugarcubes. Wayne and Chuck have been through it all - weed at Lynryd Skynyrd, depressing rudeness aimed at Stevie Nicks, joy at the B-52's and sex and/or fighting in the crowds at shows by everyone from Tina Turner to Hank Williams Jr. Then there was that woman who absolutely mortified Wayne at an Alan Jackson show ...

Episode 7 of Season 5 aired on 17 February 2022. We kicked off with a track called 'Bulletproof' of Paul Stanley's second solo album titled Live To Win. It was topical given the difficult times we are living in, it seems like everyone is going through some serious shit. We added a bit more inspiration to the airwaves with Billy Squiers' track 'Stronger' off Here and Now. It was a fairly quiet night by TSORR standards not a lot of people calling in so the show sort of had a life of its own. Cold Chisel's cover of 'Knocking on Heavens Door' showed once again just what a great live band they were. Ian Moss's guitar work as always just shines. Speaking of guitar work, there was plenty of it, Black Label Society, Exodus, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden all showcasing some of the greatest guitarists around. For a bit of UK Punk, we called on Sex Pistols with 'Did U No Wrong' and Stiff Little Fingers with 'Wait and See'. The latter perfectly demonstrates the wonderful ability of Jake Burns to shift quickly into 'really aggressive now' mode.Local music was ably handled by Roland Suttie, Johnathan Martin, and a seriously powerful track from Code 106 of a new EP called Alium. Code 106 are sounded really good on this, I was suitably impressed. From there we went on a Southern Rock jag for a few tracks, Kid Rock, Lynryd Skynyrd, and Whisky Myers all delivering the goods. 'Fill My World' the sad tale of Myles Kennedy's little dog Mozart alone in a storm and Sixx A.M. with 'Maybe It's Time' gave us a good 10 min of emotional stuff and it was tempting to mine that vein further, instead I opted for a mood-lifting end of show blitz of high octane 3 min tracks from The Offspring, The Distillers and Joan Jett (with her Blackhearts of course). We closed out with UK Metal stalwarts Desolation Angels and a sublime track from Piet Botha. Hope you enjoy it. Artists featured: Paul Stanley, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Billy Squier, Anthrax, Manowar, Black label Society, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger, MC5, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Exodus, Rage Against the Machine, Code 106, Johnathan Martin, Roland Suttie, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Whiskey Myers, The Black Crowes, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motörhead, Slash (feat Myles Kennedy), Sixx A.M., Kreator, Warrior Soul, The Offspring, The Distillers, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Desolation Angels, Piet Botha

Happy New Years Baby Essay 13 May 2019 This one is about as literal as any song I've ever written. I met my wife at a place in C-ville called "the mansion." She was a student at the college and I was a college drop out living at my Mom's. A couple blocks away from my mom's the edifice stood, a big ol' victorian structure sectioned off into apartments full of young people, or older folk looking for a new start, or drifters living out an endless Jack Kerouac novel, or something much less romantic like people who refuse to or just couldn't get their shit together. This particular party was sometime in the 90's. Hmm, let's say 1993 (chuckle)? (If anyone is so inclined the mansion is in the Circle 9 movie THE CRACKER GETS THE CHEESE where Joe Gallagher plays a drug dealer, I play a cop, and the late Tom Wind plays a drug purchaser.) On the first floor is a big hall with a stair case opposite the main entrance and big apartments on either side. Facing the stairs, this party took place in the apartment to the right. THAT was where my future wife lived. One time I put my head through the drywall in the closet in her bedroom. The thing about these parties is that Baltimore is a pretty gritty town - almost literally. When I was growing up you had preps and grits. Later on you had punkers too. But "grit" was a term to describe people who were southern rock devotees. They wore Molly Hatchet baseball shirts, jeans, and workboots year round, even in July. Once a grit jumped off of the high dive in full uniform at a teen night at the pool and everybody cheered. The preps kind of morphed into punks at a certain point. The thing that brought everyone together was a common love of cannabis. So at a pretty young age everybody was mixing together REM and Black Sabbath and MDC and Lynryd Skynyrd. Jump forwards a decade or so and these are the folks populating the party at the Mansion; students, workers, hangers ons, musicians, folks who weren't scared off of drugs simply due to illegality. Back then, during cannabis prohibition, a line of thought went "well I might as well try PCP or crack because they fucking lie about pot!" Personally I gave up anything illegal when I turned 21 and I set on turning my liver into pate and my lungs into a burnt husk. Eventually I grew to view those addicted to alcohol and nicotene with scorn simply bcause they are the drugs sanctioned by society and therefore the laziest paths to addiction. That's a pretty assholish stance to take. It reminds me of gas stations/convenience stores. They function as one stop addiction shops for bloated and distracted Americans addicted to gasoline, nicotene, high fructose corn syrup, and gambling. There's always a contingent in alcoholic circles of folks who fancy themselves as great artists or writers living out the romantic lifestyle of Charles Bukowski or Vincent Van Gogh. The truth is we were all just a bunch of drunks. I understand why alcohol came to prominance oh so many years ago. Simply put you needed the alcohol in your liquids to kill lethal bacterias. I oft wonder what American society would be like if the sanctioned drugs were cannabis and psylocibin instead of alcohol, nicotene, sugar, and caffiene. It sure as fuck wouldn't be nearly as fucking violent or mean. Like fast food. Shit, how far have we strayed from the song now? This is like one of the podcasts me and Brian make. But dig, there is no conspiracy behind all of the legal drugs (and I include fast food in this category) being the ones that make the populace stupid, lazy, and dependent. There IS, however, a willingness to use the parameters presented to acquire and maintain power. Now we're lurching into territory that can't be summmed up in an essay about a song in a never ending rock opera. Suffice to say that, what, we're all slaves to the chains society presents to us in the form of everything they make ads for during the Super Bowl? That's myoipic and too media obsessed. In terms of THIS SONG? What matters are the relationships we make and maintain with other people. If you're clever enough you can twist anything into seeming like an addiction. The mansion is where I met the love of my life so I presume one could say that it's certainly acceptable to be addicted to love. And there you have it. It's been about Robert Palmer the whole fucking time. notes: - Paul told me that adding an "s" to Happy New Year is a Baltimore thing. - The guitar solo was played as a goof with the intention of recording a better one later but Paul and Pork liked the original one.- I'm using Paul's effect board on all of the 1993 stuff so as to have a different sound than the SFP-Brandy stuff. - For the back up vocals we ran a mic through the guitar pedals. I love doing that because I usually know what effects I want on the vocals and it always takes a million years to find it in the fucking computer later. Just do it live. It always goes back to the Beatles. Lennon wold have the effects on his voice when he recorded the vocals. Look, man, it's MUCH more efficient for me to record the vocal with the effect already on it.

Hey there! I'm Kelly Sutton. We are so glad you’re here for another Inside Music Row! We've got lots in store for you today, so let’s get started. Toby Keith’s eleventh annual golf classic tees off this weekend in his home state of Oklahoma. Toby created the event to help raise money for the O-K Kids Korral, a cost-free home away from home for children battling cancer. The event includes a huge auction, plenty of fabulous food, incredible entertainment, a celebrity-filled round of golf, plus… someone will walk away with a new Ford truck. After a decade of planning and fundraising, The O-K Kids Korral opened earlier this year and has already seen more than 75 families with visits from one day to eight weeks. What an incredible way to help families during extremely difficult times! Eric Church is set to hit the road this Fall when he launches “The Outsiders World Tour.” The party kicks off September 11th in Bossier City, Louisiana, and will hit up at least 31 arenas across North America. Look for Dwight Yoakam as the special guest for the tour, with opening acts Brothers Osborne, Brandy Clark, and Halestorm to split opening sets. Eric’s last tour featured plenty of specially-designed backdrops for the show, so he’ll have a completely new look for this tour, which will have a high-tech design and a 360-degree view of Eric and the band. For ticket info…check out Eric Church dot com. After one of the most successful summer tours of 20-13, Bad Company and Lynryd Skynyrd are teaming up again for more co-headlining shows this summer. The groups have about ten dates together in the Northeast in the month of July. For the most up to date tour information, check out Bad Company dot com or Lynyrd Skynyrd dot com. Jerrod Niemann has established a new non-profit called “Free The Music U-S-A.” The new organization is dedicated to collecting used instruments and giving them to children in need. Jerrod holds a deeply rooted belief that every child deserves the opportunity to explore music, so he is doing his part to get instruments in the hands of children that otherwise would not be able to afford them. Jerrod is currently celebrating the launch of his latest album “High Noon” and the success of the lead single “Drink To That All Night,” which just hit number one on the charts. Now it's time to go Inside The Song. Austin Webb’s debut single on Streamsound Records did quite well for him and earned a lot of praise from the critics. We had a chance to ask him what the track “Slip On By” is all about.
Hey there! I'm Kelly Sutton… we are so glad you’re here for another Inside Music Row. We've got lots in store for you today, so let’s get started with some entertainment headlines. As country music’s biggest entertainers come together this weekend for the ACM Awards, they will also pay tribute to our nation’s armed forces. “An All-Star Salute To The Troops” will be filmed Monday Night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and will air May 20th on CBS. Martina McBride will release her new album “Everlasting” next week, which is a collection of primarily soul covers. Hits included on the new disc are “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” “Bring It On Home to Me,’ and “Little Bit of Rain.” “Little Bit of Rain” includes a guitar solo from Reggie Young, a session musician who played with Elvis Presley, among others. Look for “Everlasting” to be released Tuesday on Martina’s own Vinyl Recordings. After plenty of success with the music thing…Josh Turner is set to release his first book. Josh wants his fans to learn a little more about his Christian faith, as well as his relationships with his wife and his boys. “Man Stuff: Thoughts on Faith, Family and Fatherhood” hits stores April 29th, and includes a forward written by Jase Robertson of A and E’s “Duck Dynasty.” Jase is returning the favor after Josh sang “Why I Love Christmas” with him and his wife Missy on last year’s “Duck The Halls” Christmas album.
