Slash has released his 4th album with Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators and this one didn't come easy. Post-Covid, recording comes with its risks. They jumped in a tour bus and travelled across the country to Nashville, to record in the historic RCA Studios - famous for Elvis and the Everly Brothers. The band wanted to get in the right head-space to record an album "as LIVE" and the tour bus trip was the perfect opportunity, especially after the isolation of Covid lockdowns to get to know each other again. What they didn't know, is that Myles Kennedy at the time had Covid and was about to sit out a week after a positive test. Then Todd and Brent Fitz caught it, and the album stalled. Despite the set-backs, the latest album 4 comes with a killer sound. "The River is Rising" and "Call off The Dogs" are clear highlights. Becko chats with Todd about life before working with Slash and how the audition went to get the gig - imagine growing up with 'Appetite' and 'Use Your Illusion' and then getting to work with Slash! Todd also opens up about his chats with GN'R legend Duff McKagan. This is The Rider with Becko, and Todd Kerns from Slash, Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators

Four albums in to a now ten-year career, Slash FT Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators (SMKC) are finally starting to sound like a cohesive unit. Not that their previous albums have sound disjointed – far from it – but with a certain guitarist by the name of Slash out the front the band has always seemed like another personal vehicle for his stellar career. From their debut album Apocalyptic Love, it was clear to the world that this more than a one man show, with vocalist Myles Kennedy in particular stamping his vocal authority on the band from the outset. There were times that it seemed Kennedy was taking a back seat in the direction and output of the band, but steadily over the course of two more albums his – and the rest of the band's – confidence grew more and more, to the point where now SMKC actually feels and sounds like a complete rock band. Not a great guitarist with a competent backing band. With the aptly titled latest album 4, SMKC have released a collection of songs that is as impressive as it is cohesive. Of course, the guitar wizardry and solos still dominate proceedings – but, let's face it, we would all be disappointed if that were not the case. What is noticeable is the assuredness and contributions from the other members – Kennedy, drummer Brent Fits, ????? – making 4 perhaps the first SMKC album that sounds like it was recorded by a BAND rather than an ensemble.Fitz joined HEAVY for a chat recently to talk about the album and how the band succeeded in recording what many people are already labelling the best album of their short, but exciting, career."The irony is the new album is called 4, so long title for the band, short title for the album this time,” he laughed after listening to me labor over the pronunciation of the band's name. “You've gotta be... the way the band was first put together with Slash and his whole purpose of having a new band after Velvet Revolver was... I don't think he really knew what the overall outcome was gonna be after he recorded that first solo record with all the guest singers. So it was Slash putting a new band together, and then when he was so blown away when him and Myles connected on a couple of songs on that record, our band went from Slash to Slash featuring Myles Kennedy, and by the time that entire year on the road together as a band - and that being Todd Kearns and I and our first guitar player in the band Bobby - that kind of turned into Slash saying 'well, we should give the band a name' so instead of just The Conspirators I think the expectation from people having Slash's name tied to it - like he did with Slash's Snakepit years ago - that's it. That's why you get the super long name (laughs). We just call it SMKC for short. How's that?"The press release for the new album says, "this is SMKC like you've never heard them before", a bold statement but one which Fitz agrees is correct."After recording so many songs together and spending so much time together on the stage and off the stage I think it goes without saying that ten years of being a band together can't do anything except make us a better, tighter, smarter, well-rounded machine. The way we put our songs together is natural and it feels so comforting because... Slash doesn't tell me what to play and I don't tell him what to play. We all sort of compliment each other and it really has a comfortable feeling when we get back together. The thing is, we all have these other bands. Everyone's in another band as well as SMKC so there has to be purpose to get back and write songs and get back on the road together. With all of these other - I call them happy distractions - the band I have with Slash is SMKC so the other things that I do on my time and the other things that he does on his time are separate entities, but, man, when we get together it's pretty amazing that we've put four records together and it seems like a really strong music machine."In the full interview, Brent talks more about the songs on 4, the diversity in the bands music while still maintaining that rock feel, recording the album live in the studio and what that meant for the overall sound, how SMKC have grown musically over their ten year existence, playing in a band with Slash and more.

Today's episode was recorded from Silver Moon Salon. (1:00). Because you have asked for it, we provide updates on FastFret's cat Wynston's surgery and his recovery. (5:01) Did you know you can play with a member of Kiss and post those videos online? But can you? Should you? During a recent rabbit hole on YouTube, Phil Proietti came on our radar and we try to analyze who this guy is. Is he really playing with members of Kiss or is this some kind of bamboozle to snag views on his channel? We are asking you the listener to provide some input on this guy, who he is and what level of connection to Kiss that he actually is. Or even better, we'd love to talk to the guy to find out. Is he legit because we really don't want to be Jared Threatin'd. (21:20) We watch Kuarantine's No, No, No, an all-star cover of a Kiss song featuring members of the Luke Bryan band, Klassic '78, Trixter and Winnipeg's own Chris Jericho. Be warned, the worst ever Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons imitations may happen. How does it compare to the original and how much better does it chart compared to Kiss? And how has this cover affected Jericho's relationship with the Kiss duo? (34:00) We talk 80's Kiss, Kiss's underrated guitarist Bruce Kulick, revolving around the new Kiss book Take It Off: Kiss Truly Unmasked. We discuss the book's Winnipeg connection with Brent Fitz, THE Winnipeg Kiss Convention (43:00) and meeting Bruce Kulick. TOQUE /TO͞OK/ noun A close-fitting knitted or crocheted cap having no brim for warmth. A rock band consisting of 4 Canadian musicians destined to celebrate the best in Canadian music. In 2012, a few musicians took time out of their busy schedules playing with Slash and Kelly Clarkson to band together and play a charity event in Winnipeg, Canada. The theme of the night was to play only classic Canadian music. With a setlist comprised of tunes by such greats as, Streetheart, Queen City Kids, Kim Mitchell, Loverboy, Saga, Platinum Blonde, Harlequin and Aldo Nova they played to a packed house raising money for Cancer research. The night was such a success that they decided to put together a record to celebrate the best in Canadian Music and remake the songs that influenced and inspired their careers. Toque is: Todd Kerns - Lead vocals and guitar Brent Fitz - Bass guitar and vocals Cory Churko - Guitar and vocals Shane Gaalaas - Drums and vocals They are releasing album 2 “Never Enough” on August 28th, and the single, their first original “Never Enough For You” is available now. Digital Downloads can be Pre-Ordered at toquerocks.ca, or you can pick up a copy of their first release Give’r on iTunes. Upcoming Shows. August 27th – Listening Party – Nashville’s Event Centre – Winnipeg August 29th – Meet n Greet – John’s Music Store – Moosejaw SK August 30th – Meet n Greet B Sharp Music Store – Regina, SK August 31st – Shake The Lake – Regina, SK September 1st – Party In The Park – Calgary, AB I had the opportunity to sit with each member of Toque and talk about their careers for my upcoming documentary “Under Covers” about the 80’s cover band scene in the Canadian Prairies. These conversations were so rich that I asked Todd Kerns if it would be ok to release them in conjunction with the new album to give fans more intimate knowledge on where these guys came from and how that has influenced their careers.

Veteran drummer Brent Fitz joins us this week for an entertaining talk about his life and career. Born in Winnipeg, Brent  took to music early. After learning drums to a steady soundtrack of bands like RUSH, Fitz was playing the club circuit at age 15. Ultimately, a gig with Canadian band Streetheart gives Brent the confidence to make the leap to Los Angeles in 1996. Brent Fitz   In the 20+ years since arriving in America, Brent Fitz has carved out quite a career. Initially cranking out great tunes with the criminally underrated Union, Brent would join up with LA stalwarts Bulletboys and Vince Neil for road work. Furthermore, this  experience would help prepare Brent for his next challenge, filling the drum chair of Eric Singer in Alice Cooper's band. This long-form interview has lots of great stories from these gigs. Brent's openness and honesty paints a clear picture of what a working musician goes through during a very turbulent time for rock music. As can be seen within KISS fan circles, Brent is at ground zero for two very cool offshoot projects from members of the band. In 2017, he and fellow Slash band mate joined Bruce and Bob Kulick for a performance on The KISS Kruise. The deep cut-laden set was the talk of the Kruise. His position in the Gene Simmons Band has also been a childhood dream come true. Additionally, it was recently announced that Ace Frehley would be using Gene's band as his backing band on an upcoming tour of Australia. As a result of his childhood KISS fandom, it's entertaining to hear Brent's stories about all of these projects. This episode features tons of great stories as well as updates on Gene Simmons, the Kulick Brothers, and Slash. It also underscores the importance in rock history of Streetheart (trust us, it's pretty interesting). Those names should be familiar to Decibel Geek listeners and readers as they've made numerous appearances on the podcast to discuss The Big Rock Show, Hair of the Dog, and Guitar Duos. They are also members of Thee Rock n Roll Residency; a weekly covers show that has been wowing Nashville crowds with its spot-on renditions of classic rock hits and deep cuts. Additionally, Thee Rock n Roll Residency has a rotating cast of musicians that come from all eras of rock history. [caption id="attachment_30090" align="alignright" width="300"] Gene Simmons Band [/caption] The Gene Simmons Band has been impressing die-hard KISS fans at every show on this tour. What started as a six show commitment has turned into a full-on world tour with more dates being released recently. In this conversation, the Gene Simmons Band shares the circumstances that led to them being hired. Moreover, they discuss their personal KISStories and their take on the band's history. One of the bigger reasons for the success of the Gene Simmons Band has been the wealth of deep KISS cuts that are being performed. Songs such as Charisma, Got Love for Sale, and Almost Human among many others have been thrilling KISS fans en masse. In this discussion, the guys tell Chris and Aaron how those songs were chosen as well as what songs have been rehearsed and are possibly going to be included in future setlists. Furthermore, they discuss the upcoming addition of drummer Brent Fitz to the band. Brent is a member of the extended KISS family tree; known for his work in the band Union with Bruce Kulick. Gene Simmons plans to release a massive box set later in 2017. The set is to contain a large amount of demo and unreleased material.
