Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech
John Howard was a pioneer in American cycling, representing the U.S. in the 1968, 72 and 76 Olympic Games. As a four-time U.S. Road Racing National Champion, he was one of the first Americans to race in Europe. He also stood atop the podium at the 1971 PanAmerican Games. After his days road racing, he turned to triathlon, winning the fourth edition of the Ironman World Championships in 1981 and followed that in 1982 by taking second in the first edition of RAAM, The Race Across America, And in 1985, on a very specially built bicycle, tucked in behind a rocket car on the Bonneville salt flats he set a cycling speed record of 152.2 miles per hour! Still riding, coaching and writing, he has recently released his latest book about an early American Hero: Marshall, Major, Taylor, the first American cycling superstar! His book: The Black Cyclone; A Hero the World Forgot, details the trials and challenges faced by a black athletic super star in post Civil War America, and how he overcame those obstacles to become the fastest cyclist in the world at the time. Relentlessly Resilient host Jennie Taylor launched The Major Brent Taylor Foundation on what would have been her husband's 40th birthday. Nearly five years later, the organization has expanded to not only include their original principles of training, honoring, and engaging, but to provide Gold Star families with travel opportunities to attend the annual rededication of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial, an interactive and massive 9/11 Project traveling installation, Flag Missions, and much much more. On this Cohost Conversation episode, Jennie and Michelle discuss the power and purpose of the foundation and invite others to get involved in patriotism wherever they are, including if they can donate to the foundation or attend the Leadership Legacy Gala on Friday, November 8, 2024, in Ogden Utah. They also, and most importantly, implore listners to become civically involved and patriotic no matter your political views, as that is the freedom Major Taylor, and others like him, have fought and died for. Even though we live in challenging times, we can become ‘Relentlessly Resilient’ as we lean on and learn from one another’s experiences. Hosts Jennie Taylor and Michelle Scharf are no strangers to overcoming adversity; Michelle lost her husband to cancer, while Jennie’s husband, Major Brent Taylor, was killed in the service of our country. Their stories bond them together, and now listeners can join them weekly as they visit with others enduring challenges and who teach us how they are exercising resiliency, finding value in their grief, and purpose in moving forward. Presented by Minky Couture, makers of the most luxurious and soft blankets with a mission to share comfort and love during the special moments of life. This Courage Conversation with Medal of Honor recipient Major Jim Taylor was recorded last fall during a special Veterans Day visit to the National Medal of Honor Museum's construction site. Major Taylor and host Mo Barrett discuss his path to the Army, his heroism in Vietnam – where he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to rescue wounded men from burning vehicles – and his memorable experience with President Lyndon Johnson during his White House medal ceremony.
Wood talks through Apple TV's surprisingly solid historical drama MANHUNT. Other topics include a BLACK ENTERPRISE article on Major Taylor cyclist Kirk Charles, new music, NBA& WNBA topics, and the new day in Major League Baseball for the greats of the Negro Leagues.
Join us as we delve into the inspiring story of Jennie Taylor, widow of Major Brent Taylor, and their unwavering dedication to service, sacrifice, and patriotism. In this episode of The Optimistic American, Jennie and host Paul Johnson dig into the profound impact of Major Taylor's life and legacy, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs faced by military families and the importance of honoring those who serve. Topics Discussed in the Video: A Blind Date: Jennie shares the journey of how she and Brent came together. Initially introduced on a blind date arranged by mutual friends, their first encounter didn't unfold as expected. Despite the rocky start, they crossed paths again and discovered a deep connection rooted in their shared love for their country. Their relationship flourished, leading to marriage and the joy of having seven children together. Mayors: Jennie discusses her husband, Mayor Brent Taylor, and his experience as a mayor. She mentions that Brent was born for politics and leadership. After serving on the city council for four years, he decided to run for mayor and did a great job. Paul shares his insights on being a mayor. He mentions a set of principles he had come across during his time as a mayor and the experience both his family and him went through during the time he was mayor. The Fateful Mission: Jennie talks about her husband Brent Taylor's fateful mission. Brent served in Iraq twice before deploying to Afghanistan with the National Guard. He also served on the city council and as the mayor while being a soldier in the National Guard. Despite being older and having a family, Brent volunteered for a deployment with a ranger battalion from Georgia. During a routine hike with Afghan soldiers on November 3rd, 2018, one of the Afghan soldiers he was training turned hostile and shot and killed him. Grief and Resilience: Jennie shares her journey of grief and resilience following her husband's death in combat. Despite facing financial struggles and emotional turmoil, Jennie found solace in her faith and a deep belief in the values of freedom and sacrifice. Her establishment of a foundation in Brent's honor reflects her unwavering commitment to supporting military families and honoring his memory through impactful initiatives. Inspiring Patriotism: Jennie and Paul underscore the importance of understanding history, appreciating the sacrifices made for freedom, and inspiring patriotism. Jennie's mission to educate and bridge the gap between civilian and military communities through her foundation embodies a profound dedication to upholding the values of the United States and honoring the legacy of Major Brent Taylor. How to Survive the Future is a podcast I made with Allison Quantz where we talk to people in the future about what things were like today, and how they've changed. One of the conversations I had was with botanist Ellen Jacquart, around the year 2045, at McCormick's Creek State Park. Even though the day Ellen and I walked together through the park was humid, we were in the shade of the forest, and maybe spring ephemerals don't actually change the temperature, but they make you feel cooler anyway. There's some bad news there too, but I think it's another reminder that there are surprises in the natural world now, and there will be then, too. And that is not all, oh no, that is not all. We have poems from Shana Ritter AND Eric Rensberger, both local poets on the Bloomington scene. And, I interview Todd Gould, the director of WTIU's new documentary: Major Taylor: Champion of the Race, about who Major Taylor was (hint: did you know a track cyclist could be a superstar athlete? He could – in the early 1900s), and what a documentary is about beyond the film itself.
He has been called the first international African American sports superstar and in his time was the biggest star of any sport. Although he wasn't born in Chicago, some of Marshall "Major" Taylor's most lasting accomplishments occurred here.Want to read more about "Major" Taylor? Countless books have been written about him, so why hasn't a movie been made about legendary cyclist Major Taylor? Could it be because Taylor was an African American who beat white cyclists in this largely white sport in the 1890s? What we do know is that a movie promoting Taylor's story could inspire minority youth to get into the sport. Now, an award-winning movie producer is working on a movie about Taylor and coming to Reno to give a talk on September 22 at the Reno Public Market at 7 p.m. followed by a film festival. We will talk to him in this show and talk to people at Food Truck Friday who are using the new Bike Valet, sponsored by the event.

The "What's Your Revolution?" Show with Dr. Charles Corprew"
What's Good Revolutionaries? What happens when you bring fashion to sport and then you multiply it with the goodness of a community, you get a brand and lifestyle that brings about personal revolution. My guest, Curran Swint, is the founder of one of the fastest-growing cycling communities in the country, Kings Rule Together (KRT)/Queens Rule Together (QRT) For the uninitiated, cycling has been a thing for folx of color for quite some time, think Major Taylor (google him)and most recently, Charon Smith (Mr. 200 Meters, but due to the pandemic, cycling became an outlet for people to gather together safely, enjoy community, and as Curran says, look amazing. In this episode, Curran highlights the successes and challenges of curating a brand and community that revolutionizes how they see themselves. He discusses why it is important for us to change the narrative of working in silos and that we achieve more when we can figure out how to work together, thus his mantra of "Ruling Together". And, he discusses the importance of having the right mindset to succeed. This seems to be a common theme in 2023. Mindset changes everything! Enjoy. For a young black rider competing in the embers of the American Civil War, Major Taylor had the toughest of rides. He was abused by crowds, threatened with lynchings and beaten unconscious by other riders. Yet by the end of the 1890s America and the world of cycling had its first black champion, the man they called the Whirlwind. Here to tell the story is documentary maker Cyrille Vincent, whose upcoming film Whirlwind brings to life Major Taylor's incredible tale.Interview begins at 8m08sDid you know Cyclist is also stunning monthly magazine? Tune in to this week's episode featuring Cyrille Vincent, Director of Whirlwind - a story about Major Taylor, an icon. About Major Taylor: More than a hundred years ago, when bicycle races drew crowds that filled Madison Square Garden, the biggest draw of all was Major Taylor. As a superstar athlete in the most popular sport of his era, 1899 world bicycling champion Major Taylor saw his racing victories well chronicled in mainstream newspapers as well as cycling publications. Throughout his career, Major Taylor had embodied the role carved out for him by promoters, the press, and the fans, who fed off each other's desires for drama and dollars. ‘'The Black Cyclone'' was allowed on the starting line because of his exceptional talent, but he was constantly reminded, on and off the bike—as a Black American--of his place in the racial order. One of the earliest cycling champs was a Black man named Marshall "Major" Taylor. By the late 1880s, the bicycle had taken the world by storm, making cycling the biggest and most popular sport. In Indianapolis, Indiana, a young amateur cyclist with heaps of natural talent set out to make his mark. But there was a problem... Black men like him weren't allowed to compete. His faith and determination would see him ride past that barrier and every other obstacle that stood in his way. Today, Major Taylor's pioneering path to becoming one of the greatest professional cyclists the sport has ever seen. A Sony Music Entertainment and Somethin' Else production. "The more confident and empowered we feel, the more likely we are to speak up and use our voice."This week, I had the opportunity to speak with activist Keshia Roberson. Keshia is a community advisor for Run4AllWomen (an organization founded by activist Alison Desir; Run4AllWomen ambassadors Mikka Kei Macdonald and Elyse Braner were on earlier episodes of this podcast). Keshia has been involved with the organization since its beginning and participated in a leg of the organization's first journey from Harlem to DC!If Run4AllWomen sounds familiar, it may because you've been hearing all about their Women Run The Vote 3.0 Virtual Relay supporting Black Voters Matter. This iteration of the relay runs on the virtual map from Cuba, Alabama to Phenix City, Alabama. This event uses the Racery app, which allows participants to record intentional movement (think running, walking, biking, cooking, housework...) and learn historical facts from the Alabama Black Belt. You still have a few days to sign up, so grab a group of 6 friends and register while listening to the podcast.Outside of discussing Keshia's involvement in Run4AllWomen, we also discussed how Keshia began combining movement with activism; her founding of Major Knox Adventures, an outdoor series that promotes radical joy of cycling and other outdoor activities while continuing to celebrate the legacies of Major Taylor, Kittie Knox, and countless lesser-known Black outdoor enthusiasts; and finding one's place in the activism space.Keshia is a wealth of knowledge and someone who takes action to make her community a better, more inclusive space. I really enjoyed getting to learn from her, and I hope you do as well.As always, thanks to Dan Hoffman for the soundtrack you hear.

Le but ? Marshall “Major” Taylor not only was the first African American world champion in cycling, he might have been the first internationally known sports celebrity ever. Good morning/afternoon/evening/day, This week’s episode features an integral part of track cycling history and one which many of you may not know. Marshall Walter Taylor, the first African-American world champion in cycling, found success and fought racial discrimination through cycling. This is particularly impressive as he managed to do so only a few decades after the abolishment of slavery in the US! His life and career were riddled with people who wanted to stop at nothing to tear him and others down just to keep the sport white and segregated. Despite these forces, he was able to befriend several key figures who played an important role in his rise to stardom as a professional athlete. During this episode, we go through how he was first introduced to cycling, his first race, his obstacles, the races he won, and the people trying to hold him back. Make sure to listen to this episode as Major Taylor and his willpower and determination can definitely be an inspiration to us all.
