Did you ever get lost as a child. Biz's father jump on the freeway and left his ass at Marine World! That's cold. Plus, the Bay is gearing up for Taylor, and Drake is dealing with more things thrown up on stage...ya'll need to stop acting clownish with giving away your whole damn purse.
Indian-born artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee settled her roots in the beautifully diverse city of Houston, TX in 2012.She is strongly influenced by marine life, drawing abundant inspiration from her experiences with scuba diving expeditions and with the ocean itself. In her work, Folmsbee creates ethereal, intricate shapes, which she calls characters, that are meant to invite the public into something very private. Her painting intend to take the viewer into the work's moment of origin. This year, Folmsbee has become actively more involved in the marine community by working with conservation organizations such as the Galveston Bay Foundation and Correa Lab, with the hope of creating awareness about the struggles face by the marine world. We talk about her recently commissioned 240-ft project at Houston's IAH, why her father made her host an art show at 16, what she discovered attending art school in Chicago, and what the definition of failure really means to her.She talks about being bullied growing up because of her dyslexia, how she discovered her passion for art, how it is so important to protect your energy as a creative, and why our hometown of Houston is officially cool.

Preston and Sayre are today joined with Henry Hooper. Henry is one of those guys who has lived a thousand different lives. Henry served in the Marines, Army Special Forces, and retired from federal service as a Secret Service agent having served under four presidents. We talk about Henry's experiences growing up as a young African American in the south, and how he enlisted into the Marines at 17 years old in the 1950s. A lifelong boxer, Henry made the USMC boxing team where he fought Cassius Clay (Mohammad Ali) for the spot on USA's 1960 Olympic boxing team. We then discuss Henry's next pivot after his time in the Marines into becoming a Special Forces medic in the very early years of its inception. We discuss Henry's experience working with and among Vietnamese local nationals in the early 1960s, before Vietnam was considered a “war,” and the impact he had as a medic on the communities there—in addition to conducting guerilla warfare operations as he was specially-trained to do as a Green Beret. Henry has lived a life of adventure and it was a pleasure to get to speak with him.

Great Day Lobbying in D.C. Here was the agenda: The following are the only 3 cases where we have a cat from the state (FL-1, RI-2) of course we have a lot more from FL but TJ's story is good enough to make the case. For the other states, I listed all the incidents that weren't AZA zoos. I put the dates, in case they ask, but wouldn't mention them. Note: rs zoo = road side zoo DeGette (D-CO-01) -- 10:00 6/3/03 2 tigers mauled a keeper at Serenity Springs. The tigers were beaten w/ shovels and later killed. Delaney (D-MD-6) -- 10:30 1/18/09 woman mauled by jaguar at rs zoo 6/2/04 tiger escaped the circus, attacked elephant all in the big top with an elementary school visiting Lawrence (D-MI-14) -- 11:00 was very favorable to the bill. 8/17/15 Animals of MT brought wolves, bobcats and a tiger to an abandoned factory for a photo shoot. The tiger began to attack and was chased with a weed whacker and a tarp. 7/27/14 woman lost finger to caged lion at rs zoo 10/25/95 pet lion killed his owner in front of her child Brown (D-FL-5) -- 11:30 seemed to favor the bill and has an intern in his office who visited many times, starting w/ school group, who begged him to chase us down so she could meet us. Howie told her it would be her job to stay on the boss until they co sponsored. TJ the tiger was rescued from a decrepit back yard breeder after a person had been killed there, another nearly lost their leg and a teenager had been mauled by an escaped cougar. 10/6/14 a construction worker lost his thumb at ZWF, an infamous cub handling operation run by Mario Tabraue. ZWF funds ZAA lobbyist Frank Vitello. 1/3/14 a lion escaped from rs zoo Clyburn (D-SC-6) -- 12:00 6/14/16 TIGERS under USDA investigation for recurring ringworm in cubs used for handling and for transport issues between rs zoos in FL and OK. 8/10/14 report of mountain lion escaping a pet store, but report was later denied. Who knows? 1/8/03 a pet cougar escaped and was on the run for 3 days 4/28/02 pet tiger mauled an 8 year old child 6/18/94 a tiger at a breeding farm mauled a 17 year old worker 1/1/91 pet lion escaped and mauled a 5 year old and her grandmother Bera (D-CA-07) -- 1:00 9/4/15 a 3 month old tiger was found wandering in a neighborhood. That's the age when they can't be used for photo props any more because they are too big. 3/16/13 woman was mauled to death by a lion at rs zoo 7/31/98 a tiger bit through the head of a woman who was posing with it for a photo at Marine World where Laurie Gage, the big cat expert hired by USDA worked. 10/22/97 a jaguar attacked two trainers in a single week 1972 Jodie Foster was nearly mauled to death on the set by a lion Capuano (D-MA-07) -- 1:30 5/17/00 14 year old girl was attacked by a tiger at a rs zoo 8/17/97 13 year old girl was mauled by a tiger at a photo booth Cicilline (D-RI-01) -- 3:00. We rescued Max the Bobcat who was an illegal pet. Owner took him to be declawed, an illegal procedure, and the vet turned him in to DNR. Months of litigation before the state could send him to us. He had been a mail order pet from out of state. Narla Cougar was sold from CO to RI as a pet. When the owner died, his wife wanted to make a rug out of her, but we convinced her to let us take her to FL. We also introduced ourselves to who is the newest aide to Rep Kathy Castor. She gets 100% on animal bills so it was just to meet the new girl. We dropped in on Rep Patrick Murphy and met w/ Candace Walls, who are both big animal advocates. He already co sponsored, so we were just saying thank you. Also met with who works for Rep Carlos Curbelo, who signed on at the request of Rep Murphy. The last meeting was w/ He replaced James and seems to really want to move our bill forward. He says Senators are far less likely to stick their necks out before a committee hearing, and cited the Crush Video law that already passed, but needed some tweaks to make it enforceable. He said that even on such egregious abuse, there was very little motivation to stand up for the bill until it comes to a full floor vote. Despite that I am leaving DC with renewed optimism that our bill will pass and the suffering of big cats will end. Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/ I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet. Bob LaPoint, true life Hero that changed my life - The year is 1987. The World has 2,700,000,000 less people than it does today, the Giants beat John Elway in the Super Bowl, Richard Branson makes the first Transatlantic flight in a Hot Air Balloon (2,790 miles) & Freddy Krueger is a serial killer....and a 3 event skier. I remember that Plane flight like it was last year though, because it was my first time in an Airplane. Scared, excited, and eagle eyeing out the window harder than anyone in history...there was soooo much to see!!!! And everything looked unlike anything I'd ever seen before....houses, roads, lakes, mountains....all the stuff I'd already become familiar with in my 8 years of life....but it all looked so different from up here. As we made our approach into West Palm Beach Int'l Airport, I remember looking out the window and pointing to the trees and asking my dad "DAD DAD, look at those trees!!!....they look like pine trees!!??...how is that possible??!" See, on the west coast, in my world, I had only ever seen pine trees in the mountains...where it snows. I knew Florida had neither of those things, so it blew my mind. A couple days later, after my brother competed in his first U.S. Water Ski Nationals, my mind was about to be blown again. This particular year, 1987, was the first year the Nationals week would be capped by a US Open on the weekend. It was my second year skiing, and I knew all the names of the best in the World...but I'd never seen them ski anywhere other than ESPN (remember when water skiing was on ESPN?). The weekend didn't disappoint. As an 8 year old kid with stars in my eyes....I remember standing on the shoreline thinking, "These guys were INSANE!!!" Some guy no one had ever heard of, Jeff Rodgers, showed up and cranked the shit out of some 1,3,5's. I remember the rumor being that he'd just started skiing a few years before and ran the slalom course the first time he ever tried it. That, to my little pea-brain, was hard to fathom. And here he was already fighting to beat the best in the World. A West Coast legend, Carl Roberge, ended up tying for 2nd at that US Open, right before my eyes. In 1987 he was the defending Tour champion (5 years later Terry Winter and I were chasing Carl's Jr Boys Western Regional slalom record...3 @ 35 off). I had 2 hero's before getting to watch that US Open..Bob & Kris LaPoint. They were West Coast skiers, and legends around the World. In 1987 Bob LaPoint won the World Slalom Title at Thorpe Park, London (5th World Title) and won at Marine World and the MasterCraft invitational. And when I left Okeeheelee, after witnessing the greatest sporting event I'd ever witnessed, I had a new goal: I wanted to be out there someday, doing what those guys did. The US Open was the seed planted...it was everything I needed as a kid looking for something to hold onto..and it was a pivotal moment in my life..the moment that sparked everything that was to come. --------------- Exactly 20 years later, in 2007, I found myself standing on the dock at the US Open, shoulder to shoulder with the best skiers in the World: Drew Ross, Thomas Moore, Nick Parson, Will Asher, Jamie Beauchesne. MasterCraft & Chris Sullivan had joined forces and pulled off one of the greatest water ski events I've ever been a part of. They brought the US Open to Disneyworld. It was at night, under the lights, and I was fortunate enough to make the 6 man final, squeaking in by beating out Jeff Rodgers..one of the Legends that inspired my ski bug 20 years prior. The conditions were pretty tough: dark, rolly, lumpy,...unpredictable,...just how I like it. The boat ran its simulation pass, I pooped in my pants a little...and it was time... And somehow, when the spray settled that eve, I ended up in a Tie-breaker with my buddy Thomas Moore. Going out first, I was able to run 38 off cold - not very pretty tho. Coming back at 39, I knew buoy 2 was going to be all or nothing...TMo could crush 39 on his second effort & I knew I had to leave it all out there. I think I got lucky,...I blacked out at 2, slammed it as hard as I could, and somehow my ski stayed in the water. I ended up running the pass, and finishing with 1 at 41. TMo looked so solid in that runoff. I'm not sure what happened at 39, but he was late at 3, and couldn't finish the pass. Afterward, I was standing on the shoreline, bare feet in the wet florida grass, just like it was only 20 years before...gazing down the lake, lights half blinding me, thousands of people lining the waters edge...realizing that two decades prior and a couple hours away, I had been lucky enough to witness this very event, an experience that had changed my life. I stood there in disbelief that I had won the US Open....hoping that my buddies and I had actually inspired some kids that night....hoping that we had sparked a light for the next generation. - Marcus Brown

Download Episode Precious Stroud- founder or the Black Female Project.org Precious Stroud- Gen X Black Woman from Berkeley Importance of story telling in communications Important to talk about race because everything is racialized. She says race impacts everything in her life. Impacts how society was set up. If someone believes another person is inferior based on color of skin, they won’t promote that person. Economics doesn’t impact how long Black people live but it’s the result of racism. She has been a friend with people from different races and backgrounds since she was in elementary school. Her first experience with racism that she remembers was people not wanting to sit next to her little sister at Marine World because of how dark her sister was. Jim Crow was not that long ago. Her great grandmother was first generation born free. Coping skills for being Black in the US were passed down and Precious has had to unlearn some of the fears for survival sake that she internalized. She is working on just being herself instead of having to feel like she needs to take care of “white women,” so she will be accepted. Precious started the Black Female Project to help Black females tell the truth about their experiences in the workplace. She always felt pressure to navigate and code-switch at work, which took its toll on her stress level and health. She was hired at her last job for her talent and creativity, and then was told she wasn’t “measuring up,” and didn’t meet “their standards.” This is very common issue for Black women who are told they speak up too much, don’t fit in, or not meeting expectations. In addition, she later found out she was paid less than a white man at the same level. It’s also common for Black people in organizations to not get feedback about their work, or areas for improvement until they get fired. When they ask why they didn’t get feedback before, their manager told them that they didn’t want to be seen as racist. The Black Female project celebrates Black females in the workplace and to have them share their stories. Racism in the workplace contributes to autoimmune diseases and hair loss. Sharing their stories has been healing for all the women who participated. It is in-person, online and ongoing. It’s important for Black females to speak up about racism and inequality. Prccious talks about the myth of the “angry Black woman,” and how Black women are stereotyped that way any time they show emotion, disagree or speak up for themselves. Her project is continues to grow. They are also starting the Black Teacher’s Project. Check out BlackFemaleProject.org

Is it possible to take dolphins from captivity and train them how to survive out in the wild? Our guest, Roberta Goodman thinks it is possible; Roberta's goal is to create a protocol for handlers to accomplish this. After reading Dr. John Lilly’s book, “Communication Between Man and Dolphin,” in 1978, Roberta took on the challenge of communicating with dolphins wholeheartedly. Roberta knew Dr. Lilly from 1980 until his death in September 2001. At his Human Dolphin Foundation lab at Marine World/Africa USA in Redwood City, California, Roberta designed and performed communication experiments with the dolphins, Joe and Rosie. Her ultimate goal was to reunite the dolphins with their natural environment. As project director, Roberta moved Joe and Rosie to the Florida Keys and prepared them for their release back to the ocean. Roberta currently lives on the Big Island of Hawaii, taking people on wild dolphin swim adventures. .

2013 was Australia's hottest year on record, and the sixth hottest globally. Plus the 'polar vortex' hitting North America, and one of Australia's "most significant heatwaves". And the effect of "C2O" on jumping sea snails. Physics professors have searched the internet for evidence of time travel, and didn't find any. Are dolphins getting high on a toxin secreted by puffer fish? Truth is we really don't know. A new Staph vaccine shows promise in rabbits, but might not work as well in humans. A species of sea anemone has been found on the underside of Antarctica's ice sheets. They are the only marine animals known to live embedded in the ice, and no one is sure how they survive. When seven-year-old Sophie wrote a letter to CSIRO, Australia's peak governmental science organisation, she wanted to know what research was being done on dragons. The CSIRO responded beautifully, first apologising for the lack of dragon-research and then making her a titanium dragon with a 3D printer.
Recipe for a great show with 4 main ingredients: 1. Jimmy Dore-Multi-talented comedian/host discusses his family, growing up around anger, and shares a hysterical letter he wrote in response to an audience member who texted while he was on stage. 2. Shari Carlson-Acting and singing teacher talks about listening to that little voice inside that knows everything, and her new book about how working with an elephant at Marine World changed her life. 3. Therapist/Author/Speaker-Rebekah Vandeberg shares her path from Australia's Outback to helping people all over the world get back to the work they are meant to do and lives they are destined to live. 4. Singer/Songwriter/Puppeteer Grant Baciocco played and sang another great original song about youthful defiance. Amazing group, amazing show! Enjoy!
