Send us a textWelcome to Turtle Island Talk 11, where we go into real stories impacting Indigenous communities across North America. From government surveillance and historical injustices to Indigenous resilience, activism, and culture—nothing is off the table. In this episode, we explore the case of Jason Kennedy, a First Nations man who underwent surgery at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg—only to wake up and discover that doctors had amputated the wrong leg. Was this a tragic mistake, or part of the ongoing medical negligence Indigenous people face? We break down the long history of medical racism and what needs to change. We also discuss Denise Shafer, the owner of La Indita, a beloved Mexican and Indigenous restaurant in Tucson, Arizona, that was recently targeted by ICE. Was this just a “routine” inspection, or a case of racial profiling? And why do Indigenous and Mexican-owned businesses seem to face this kind of scrutiny more than others?Alongside these heavy-hitting stories, we also have much more so sit back and enjoy this episode of Turtle Island Talk. Following on from our previous episode with Joe Robinson, we are joined by Jason Kennedy who is the VP of Engineering at Improbable. Jason has an impressive background in, having previously directed large teams of engineers to push the boundaries of simulation technology for defence and space applications. In a full and frank discussion, Jason describes the challenge for scaling simulation applications for serious training and decision support applications. Coining the term ‘Horizontal Scaling'.Jason covers the demand signal first, laying out the need for improved collaboration between government, academia and industry across simulation technologies. Partly to reduce costs, but more importantly to model and rehearse things that just can't be done live due to the need for scale, complexity or things that are too dangerous to do in the real world on a live population.Jason goes on to describe what isn't working and proposes some approaches for improved collaboration and argues the case that there may be some dominant platforms for our ecosystems (such as we see with Apple and Google) but that's not necessarily a bad thing if it lifts the rest of the industry and academia to innovate. Like the rail network, some monopolies are just a reality we may have to live with, rather than a fragmented approach to developing our infrastructure. As ever we are joined by Andy Fawkes from MS&T, who has curated some of the best stories from the last two weeks across training and simulation. One story that doesn't seem to go away is the problems with UK MFTS. Andy also covers initiatives to lower the environmental impact of flying training and of course next week is ITEC in Rotterdam, which no doubt will provide a whole host of more interesting news to come!Episode Sponsor: Improbable DefenceImprobable Defence is a mission focused technology company working to transform the national security of our nations and their allies in the face of increasing global competition and evolving threats.Today, national security is defined by technological superiority. "Imperfect follower of Jesus and really imperfect mother to two amazing human beings! Grateful to be able to do what I love!" - KLG New York Times bestselling author Kathie Lee Gifford reveals heartwarming, entertaining conversations between people and personalities who both agree and disagree about who Jesus is, his role throughout history, and his presence in our lives today. For decades Kathie Lee has had deep conversations about her faith with anyone who is interested in talking about it. What she discovered early on is most people are very willing to talk about Jesus: atheists, agnostics, Scientologists, Jews, broken-hearted Catholics, confused Baptists, Pentecostals, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Hindus alike. While some of the people Kathie Lee has spoken with do not share her belief that Jesus is the Messiah—as prophesied for centuries by prophets in the Hebrew scriptures—they nonetheless have a universal fascination with Him. This singular man who lived more than two thousand years ago, and never traveled more than one hundred miles from where He was born, managed to change the entire world. Even the way we delineate history (BC/AD) comes from His short thirty-three years of life. In The Jesus I Know, Kathie Lee shares cherished conversations that she's had with others who find Jesus to be an ancient historical figure who somehow continues to be an undeniably magnetic, relevant presence in the modern world. Those conversations include actors like Kristin Chenoweth and Cynthia Garrett, with stories of Craig Ferguson and Kevin Costner, newsmakers and news personalities like Kris Jenner, Megyn Kelly, Jason Kennedy, and Janice Dean, performers like Chynna Phillips Baldwin, Brian Welch, Jimmie Allen, and Jimmy Wayne, hitmakers like Louis York and David Pomeranz, as well as those coming from other faith traditions. Using Kathie Lee's favorite Scripture passages as scaffolding, these thought-provoking exchanges will bring His teachings to life before your very eyes. There's been a lot of speculation as to the future of not only Jason Kenney but the UCP itself over the last weeks, and we wanted to try and make some sense of things. To help us do that, we sit down with Duane Bratt, political science Professor in the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies at Mount Royal University, and we cover a lot of ground! We break down Jason Kennedy's response to COVID, what's likely going on in the back halls of the legislature and try and nail down what the last two and a half years of the UCP in power will likely mean for the 2023 provincial election!
