In Part 2 of Dennis's interview with Dick DeBartolo, the writer talks about what it was like to juggle two dream jobs; writing for Mad Magazine and The Match Game TV show...at the same time! He also shares story after story of the good will he receives when a stranger finds out he's "Mad's maddest writer." He's gotten everything from airplane upgrades to house seats at a sold-out show. Dick also talks about his current work as a gadget expert on various TV shows as well as his own podcast The Giz Wiz. And on the subject of The Match Game, Dick shares stories about all the regulars; Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers, Gene Reyburn and Richard Dawson. Other topics include: his secret to staying productive and creative, producer Mark Goodson's jaw-dropping art collection, Alfred E. Neuman's origin story, that really nice thing Betty White did for him, that time a Match Game producer informed him, "Standards and Practices are very unhappy" and why he thinks the fans who talk to him about Mad love it so so much. www.gizwiz.biz
Dennis is joined via Zoom by one of his heroes, comedy writer Dick DeBartolo who worked for both Mad Magazine and The Match Game TV show...at the same time! Dick talks about how he landed both jobs, how they actually complimented each other and what it was like to go back and forth between the two offices in Manhattan. Recalling Match Game, Dick describes how dry the questions were when he started and how it was his idea to make the questions silly, which basically saved the show. Dennis also has lots of questions for Dick about his beloved Mad magazine, like who exactly was it for? And how did they create parodies of movies that were still in theaters without VHS tapes to refer to? And what does one of Dick's Mad magazine features look like typed on a page? Dick also talks about his personal life and recalls how he met his now-husband Dennis at the gym back in 1980...because of Mad. Other topics include: Dick's hilariously tender relationship with Mad founder Bill Gaines, Dick and Bill's secret Statue of Liberty spy adventure, Gay Sundays at Studio 54, what game show producing legends Mark Goodson and Bill Todman were like behind the scenes, why celebrities like Michael J. Fox, June Lockhart and Viggo Mortenson loved being parodied in Mad and that time Dick pretended to be Alfred E. Neuman's campaign manager when Alfred was running for president. More next week in Part 2. https://gizwiz.me/

Tiffanie DeBartolo, CESG & Co-Founder of Bright Antenna Records, rightfully recognizes being a woman in the music industry as an asset. “I am not afraid to bring vulnerability to my work,” she says. “I have parts that are soft and tender. I also have steadfast parts important for me to bring to the world, whether it's my work or personal life.” Raised in Youngstown, Ohio, DeBartolo saw mainstream acts, as well as all the metal bands who passed through the area. Then, a “life-changing” U2 concert brought the realization music was a part of her deeper psyche. Cut to 2007, DeBartolo co-founded Bright Antenna Records - before the digital release reigned supreme. But her commitment to the artists and building a steel-solid team led to success in uncharted territory. DeBartolo brings an empathy in her approach to her label clients in a way that is often lacking in the music industry at large. Her ability to listen to and interpret her artists' needs builds unyielding trust. For DeBartolo, artist support is multi-tiered. She is known for housing bands while on tour, cooking family-style spaghetti and meatballs (nonna's recipe), taking bands paintballing or on tropical retreats, and even baked homemade cookies for everyone at Bright Antenna and hand delivered them at the outset of COVID. She flew The Wombats on a chartered plane to a Redrocks show that absolutely needed to be played to break them. Then, did it again with Wilderado so they could make their Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance. But there is also that deeper level of support. Kyle Nicolaides of Beware of Darkness cites how one-on-one sessions with DeBartolo literally saved his life twice during dark periods. She has also personally covered therapy costs for some artists. “This is why we do it,” DeBartolo says. “I want to ensure that all the artists I work with can make a living doing this, which can be very challenging. I want songs I put out to change the world. I want the songs to mean something to people the way it meant to me growing up.” https://www.brightantenna.com/ © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. For today's episode, I am joined by author and label CEO Tiffanie DeBartolo. DeBartolo is the founder of California-based independent label Bright Antenna Records, which has quarterbacked the careers of several successful bands like The Wombats, Wilderado, and In The Valley Below. Tiffanie joins me to discuss the inception of her record label, how the late Jeff Buckley inspired her novel God-Shaped Hole, and learning to survive in a post-Roe v. Wade world. ✨ MORE ABOUT TIFFANIE DEBARTOLO ✨ Tiffanie DeBartolo has never seen being a woman in the music industry as an obstacle but as an asset. DeBartolo made two crucial saves to stop Walton's Molly Chapman and Katy Schultz from scoring, while Christina Davenport converted the game-clinching goal for Denmark. This episode of Willets Pen is brought to you by alabamatrucknuts.com. It's very difficult to come up with a tagline for alabamatrucknuts.com because it's alabamatrucknuts.com, which is already quite intriguing, so we'll just say alabamatrucknuts.com again — that's alabamatrucknuts.com.One note on this show — an actual show note — is that we were wrong about Bill Veeck, who did not own the Cubs. Bill Veeck Sr. was president of the Cubs when the Veeck of Veeck as in Wreck was young, and returned to Cubs fandom after selling the White Sox… in part because Major League Baseball rejected the man who was Veeck's first choice to own the White Sox when he sold the club to Jerry Reinsdorf in 1980.That was Eddie DeBartolo Jr., best known these days as the former owner of the 49ers until getting caught up in a classic scandal over a Louisiana riverboat gambling license and $400,000 in dirty money, which cost him the team, and brought him back into the spotlight in 2020 when he got a pardon from Donald Trump.Jerry Reinsdorf was the second choice in the White Sox sale, and if it hadn't been him, the next bid was Charles Dolan, uncle of now-Guardians owner Paul Dolan, failed bidder for the Red Sox in 2002 to John Henry, and father of… still another Dolan. We're going to need to have a Britt episode where we ponder the DeBartolo-owned White Sox, and how they might not have avoided being an embarrassing trash fire of an organization, but they probably would've been a different and more fun embarrassing trash fire of an organization. That's the Chicago way. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

Shawnna Sumaoang: Hi, and welcome to the Sales Enablement PRO podcast. I am Shawnna Sumaoang. Sales enablement is a constantly evolving space and we're here to help professionals stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices so that they can be more effective in their jobs. Today, I’m excited to have Amy DeBartolo from ACA group join us. Amy, I would love for you to introduce yourself, your role and your organization to our audience. Amy DeBartolo: Hi, I’m Amy DeBartolo, I work with ACA group. My job is manager of sales enablement and I’ve been working in sales enablement now for 3.5 years. I’m excited to be here today. SS: Thank you so much for joining us. Now, one of the things I wanted to make sure we got to chat about on this podcast was around driving adoption of new initiatives and it really starts with getting the right teams involved at the right time. I’d love to learn a little bit more about your experience. How have you been able to do that in your enablement career journey? AD: Obviously the hardest thing about sales enablement is getting people involved and especially in larger companies when we’re rolling out new initiatives, what seems like, every day. One of the things that I like to do is introduce things to my team as things that are going to be helpful. Teams are often a little bit leery each time that you bring in something new, so one thing that I like to do with my team that I feel like is something that motivates them the most is I bring in a lot of contest work. I like to motivate my teams with contests, whether their silly little contests or bigger contests with bigger prizes, I always like to motivate the teams with a little bit of friendly competition. By adding a contest, we can motivate the team to compete against each other and to learn the new product at the same time. Whether it’s a prize as simple as a t-shirt or a cash prize, we seem to get the team to motivate each other by competing against each other to learn the new products. SS: I think that’s a really great approach. What are some of the challenges that enablement can face when it comes to driving adoption? AD: The challenges are definitely with all the different programs that are out there. There are so many new sales enablement programs and platforms that are coming out. We roll out so many that the team is a bit hesitant to learn so many new programs, especially when we roll them out all at once. What we try to do is to not roll out too many at the same time and give them a chance to learn each program and see how they integrate in with each other. By showing them that they integrate with each other, they see that they’re beneficial to how their sales performance is going to increase. We try to pick our programs carefully and pick our platforms with specific intent so that they can see how they’re going to integrate all in one platform. By picking out platforms that work together, we can show the team that each one is beneficial to one another and they work together. SS: I think that’s fantastic. Now, what are some examples of unique ways that you’ve been able to get teams involved and interested in new initiatives? AD: I like to do weekly phone calls with my teams and instead of doing weekly phone calls that are serious and just training sessions, I like to give them fun titles. I’ve had calls before that I’ve called ‘it’s monday, don’t forget to be awesome.' Right now I have one that’s called Shane’s loft and we call it Shane’s world and we bring in special speakers. I try to pick out people who are doing exceptionally well on the platform so that we can highlight our top performers so that people can see, hey, this is really working for someone and this can work for you too. I like to highlight the team and I feel like by highlighting our strongest workers that other people can see, hey, this is working for someone and it can work for me too. SS: That’s fantastic. A lot of enablement practitioners really like to utilize intrinsic motivators and extrinsic motivators. How have you utilized these types of motivation to accelerate the adoption of new programs among reps? AD: As I just mentioned, by using the teams and by having team phone calls, we find that a lot of people join these calls to see how other people are working on these platforms. Another thing that we do are newsletters. We can highlight big wins from using the platforms, so if we have an exceptionally large win, we’ll highlight that win. I also try to get a quote from the rep saying, you know, hey, this win was because I sent out this email or because of this program, I was able to do this. This is something that I hadn’t been able to do in the past. By highlighting wins and by highlighting good performance or things that are coming up, we’re able to send out that newsletter in a positive way. I try to send out newsletters as often as possible, even though it’s hard on myself to send out a newsletter weekly, but I try to send them out as frequently as possible so that we can highlight those great win and highlight all these great programs that our company lets us buy into so that we can get the team motivated. SS: Now on the topic of buy-in, leadership buy-in is I think often a critical factor and driving adoption from the top down. What are some of your best practices for gaining leadership buy-in? AD: Obviously the motivation here is to make money. Anytime you can go to leadership and say, hey, you know, I can see a return on investment on this one as x amount of dollars. I’m lucky that I work for a company right now who is very adaptable. Our sales enablement program at the company right now is brand new, so they are very interested in anything that I’m going to roll out that’s going to help enable the team to make more money and to make life easier for our sales team. We have a very busy sales team right now with high quotas and anything that we can do to help enable our team to make life easier our team is very into right now. I’m lucky and fortunate that I work for a company that’s into it. For other people who have trouble with getting buy-in, something to do is to go to that leadership team and to say there’s only 12% return on emails is average and with some of these sales enablement programs right now you can see returns on your investment so much higher. It’s so important to stress that these programs are there to help and not to hinder and obviously what you’re doing right now is working, but with the help of sales enablement and the help of sales enablement teams and training and all the initiatives that we can roll out, it’s only going to improve the investment. I’m all for bringing in new products all the time. SS: I love that. Now, to close, what advice do you have for practitioners that maybe want to try new strategies when promoting their programs rather than just the conventional way that may have been used in the past? AD: Make it fun. I’m all about making things fun. My teams always know me as the person that doesn’t take things too seriously because I’m always on calls trying to make things fun. You can’t take a sales enablement program, especially some of the ones that are more complex and have serious training calls constantly. You’re not going to have a sales team that’s going to be involved if you’re always serious and this is how it’s going to be and you’ve got to do this this way and this this way and this way and that. That’s why I bring in contest work. Right now I’m running a contest with a $500 cash prize for whoever has the most emails returned to them because I want it to be fun for them. I want them to realize that if they see someone win $500 just by winning a contest and see that they get 600 emails sent out in a week, they’re going to go, I can do that too. If they won $500, imagine how much money I can make by actually getting out 600 emails and having that many clients return things. I always try to make things fun, keep things light, explain that we’re here to help them, we’re not here to make their lives more difficult. We’re here to actually make their lives easier. By having a sales enablement team and having a team that’s there to train them on things and make them feel more confident in what they’re doing is the best practice out there. SS: I think that’s fantastic advice. Amy, thank you so much for joining us today. I really appreciate it. AD: Thank you. SS: To our audience, thanks for listening. Today we talk with Sharon DeBartolo Carmack, a Certified Genealogist® with an MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing. She has a Certificate in Demonstrating Mediumship and an Advanced Academic Diploma from the Spiritualists' National Union in the U.K. To her knowledge, she is the only person in the U.S. to have credentials in both mediumship and genealogy. Listen in to hear how Sharon's determination to find another way to connect with our ancestors paid off. Topics We Discuss: [3:28] Sharon's natural transition from genealogy to mediumship. [8:07] Different from Amy's experiences where spirit spontaneously came to Amy, Sharon had a strong desire to pursue mediumship. She tried multiple paths (reiki, shamanism), but after finding a development circle and a spiritual mentor, things clicked. [13:55] Sharon's “spiritual internship”, doing 100 free telephone readings over several months. [16:27] Finding the right school and teacher was critical. [17:46] Amy talks about her new offering: 30/60/90 minute spiritual consultations. Not a therapy session, not a medium reading, but somewhere in between. Reach out at https://www.dramyrobbins.com/services [21:20] Sharon asserts confidence in mediumship comes from knowing how to respond to a “no” from the person being read. [27:08] Amy's speed round questions: What is spirituality? What is something people don't know about you? What is one thing you're looking forward to right now? What's one thing you're deeply grateful for? What book is on your nightstand? What is your favorite spiritual or healing practice? What is the most spiritually transformative experience of your life? [29:40] Why Sharon does not do private readings, but rather does group demonstrations. [30:58] How our loved ones and ancestors are together in the spirit world. No one dies alone. Sharon DeBartolo Carmack, a fifty-six-year-old renowned genealogist with no childhood paranormal experiences, intends to find out. Midlife Medium is an unintentional spiritual memoir as Sharon engrosses herself in the world of mediumship to learn whether it's possible for anyone to become a medium. The journey is not without unexpected, sometimes unsettling, consequences as Sharon grapples with her own mortality and discovers a little-known religion, Spiritualism. She also discovers that all relationships can heal, even after death. But perhaps the biggest challenge is the strain her quest puts on her relationship with her skeptical, science-teacher daughter. An often humorous yet profound attempt at bridging the gap between life and the afterlife, Midlife Medium: A Genealogist's Quest to Converse with the Dead also includes a short guide and suggestions for readers who want to start their own journey to become a medium.Ready to go “PROSPECTING!”TIME ZONES FOR LIVE SHOW:10 am PT (Hawaii)12 pm PT (Seattle)1 pm MT (Colorado)2 pm CT (Chicago)3 pm ET (Boston)8 pm (London)9 pm (Rome)Locate, Listen and Leave us a Review of ‘INSPIRED LIVING' now streaming on any of your favorite Podcasting Platforms!OMTIMES INTERNET GLOBAL PLAYER: INSPIRED LIVING RADIO – LISTEN LIVE FROM ANYWHERE AROUND THE PLANET: https://omtimes.com/iom/category/conscious-li/inspired-living/OMTIMES RADIO CALL-IN LINES: 1-202-570-7057POST A QUESTION ON THE ‘ILR' PUBLIC FACEBOOK PAGEFOLLOW ‘ILR” ON INSTAGRAM, TWITTER AT: @INSPIRED4USABOUT:Sharon DeBartolo Carmack is a Certified Genealogist, a Spiritualist Medium, and the best-selling author of twenty-seven books, including You Can Write Your Family History and Tell It Short: A Guide to Writing Your Family History in Brief, the recent biography, In Search of Maria B.
