The land of Arzium is facing a new threat. Ember Zombies have left their volcanic lands to the north and are walking through the previously peaceful lands that we call our home. You can easily recognise them with their charcoal bodies. Yet, there is hope. The city of Eastrey offers a safe haven for the creatures that are threatened by the malicious fire fairies. Everyone must make their way across deserts and plains, over mountains and through deep canyons and seek refuge, picking up other wandering creatures along the way, to join their Creature Caravan by Ryan Laukat from Red Raven Games with illustrations from Ryan Laukat. Campaign-style adventure game for 2-4 players from Red Raven games. Explore the world of Arzium with Justin and Oscar as they discuss this game from one of their favorite game designers, Ryan Laukat. This game combines storytelling, competition, and adventure to make a great experience for everyone.
00:00 - Nap strats and sleep hacks. 06:48 - With Unpacking from Witch Beam Games there's, well, a lot to unpack. What's truly brilliant here is the way the storytelling fully integrates with the gameplay, without feeling clunky, and explores a life experience in a delicate way, without being cloying. 21:06 - Above? Below? Why not have both? Ryan Laukat and Red Raven Games have made a truly lovely and pleasantly light Euro game with Above and Below, merging worker placement with a choose-your-own-adventure-like narrative element. 34:28 - We're big fans of the work of Big Potato Games and Snakesss is no exception. Phil Walker-Harding's latest is a blend of social deduction and trivia and it works brilliantly - just ask the Mongoose of Truth. 43:54 - We also got a chance to play Big Potato TV, which is currently in beta. It's great value, even in its work-in-progress state, and an easy way to get more games on the go during family gatherings, even for those people that might typically shy away from them. 46:38 - We've been exploring classic movies and rediscovering the joy of just browsing through the Radio Times for cool stuff to watch that you might not normally think of. Plus a chat about how one director aims to help save the cinema experience. All that, and the number one rule, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). A cheeky l'il Spotify Playlist is over on Spotify (obviously), which gathers together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com Note: sometimes we'll have been sent a review copy of the thing we're talking about on the podcast. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.

Here is another beautifully illustrated game by Ryan Laukat. You will immediately recognize it from his other games, such as Near and Far. You will also recognize a lot of the characters he created in his other games and which appear in Roam as well. Yet, this game from Red Raven Games is quite different from the others. There is no resource management, no movement and no storytelling. Instead, you get a lovely, light game that is very easy to explain and learn and relatively quick to play. This week Tristan, Leki, Daz and Sam get together to play The Ancient World and Call to Adventure but talk about them in the opposite order. Call to Adventure is a card based fantasy game from Johnny O'Neale and Christopher O'Neale that challenges each player to evolve a character by completing several challenges and each challenge succeeds or fails by rolling runes. The Ancient World is a worker placement/civ builder game from veteran games designer and illustrator extraordinaire Ryan Laukat. Each player must build up a civilisation under the constant threat of attack from mythical Titans who are poised to destroy all that you've built. We played the 1st edition game with the 2nd edition component upgrade. Does this mean we played the 2nd edition game? We think so. Have you raised a banner for The Ancient World 2nd edition or are you a 1st edition connoisseur? Let us know your thoughts by posting on the BoardChitless Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/428015890882352 Thanks again to our listeners for tuning in each week. "Money makes the world go 'round" is a common saying decried by most astronomers and physicists, who instead stubbornly maintain that it is due to some invisible thing that can't even qualify for a credit card. "More money than God" is also a strange phrasing, insofar as I believe the theological consensus (ranging from the Abrahamic faiths all the way to Pastafarianism) is that God does not hold assets in the standard sense. We're a little late this week due to some technical difficulties, but we have a bunch of new games to talk about, so the show must go on! We may not have made it to Essen last week, but we sure watched the hot games as they hit the show. This week we have a rundown of which games were hottest and which ones we're most excited to have in hand in the future. First up is our question of the week, in which we asked you what games you want to see out of Fantasy Flight Interactive, the first video game studio from Asmodee NA. We then dive into our acquisition disorders, including Altiplano and Imhotep: A New Dynasty. Anthony then reviews his recent plays of Anachrony and Chris shares his thoughts on the newest from Ryan Laukat, Klondike Rush. For our feature, we look at some of the hottest games at Essen this year. In this episode of Quick Looks from The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined by Carter and Elhannan Lloyd Keller, as we review three new titles. First up if Wings for the Baron (second edition), from Victory Point Games. Do you have what it takes to be a World War One war profiteer? Can you run an efficient and dynamic airplane company? Can you survive a tumultuous economy? Listen and find out! Next, we review a new title from Richard Breese, Inhabit the Earth. Is this a simulation of species development, evolution and biological dominance, or a clever, brain burning puzzle game? Listen and hear our thoughts. Finally, we review Above and Below by Ryan Laukat. Is this a eurogame, or a storytelling game or a delicious combination of both? Can a game really do both well, or is it the awkward game that doesn't fit in well with either family? Listen to our review to find out if we think it's a success. Thanks to our sponsor www.gamesurplus.com for their continued support of The Long View, thanks to The Dice Tower Network, and thanks to YOU for listening! The episode can be found here in the BGG database, or through iTunes and Stitcher by subscription.

"L'enfer, c'est les autres," wrote Sartre, which translates into "why don't nobody wanna play with me?" You see, Sartre only liked his consims and other historical wargames, but people didn't want to join him--possibly on account of there having been less history back in his old-timey days. His angst over unplayed games was the key inspiration of his existentialist philosophy. Camus tried to show him that the answer is to play with randos with his work "The Stranger." 01:52 AYURIS: Tribune (Karl-Heinz Schmiel, Spielworxx, 2021)Games Played Last Week:06:33 -Imperium: The Contention (Gary Dworetsky, Contention Games, 2021)09:57 -Distilled (Dave Beck, Paverson Games, 2023)17:25 -Quartermaster General (Second Edition): Total War (Ian Brody, Ares Games, 2020)22:26 -Sniper Elite: Eagle's Nest (Roger Tankersly and David Thompson, Rebellion Unplugged, 2022)28:53 -Tapple (Uncredited, The Op Games, 2021)30:29 -The Great Zimbabwe (Jeroen Doumen and Joris Wiersinga, Splotter Spellen, 2012)36:52 -Guards of Atlantis II: Tabletop MOBA (Artyom Nichipurov, Wolff Designa, 2021)41:07 -Hanamikoji (Kota Nakayama, EmperorS4, 2013) 43:49 -Darwin's Journey (Simone Luciani and Nestore Mangone, ThunderGryph Games, 2023)News (and why it doesn't matter):46:16 Thank to Warmboy, our Discord, and all our listeners47:18 Walker is disgusted by How to Lose a Guy in 10 DMs47:53 Planet Unknown reprint/expansion48:50 Shards of Infinity on crowdfunding49:52 Ryan Laukat's Creature Caravan50:28 Mythic Games' serial quasi-extortion; 6: Siege and all upcoming projects 55:40 Cysmic's many versions; people ask for economy but back the toys58:44 Walker's patience is running out along with his shelf space59:30 Faiyum: Privileges expansion1:00:31 Topic: Right Game, Wrong PeopleAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
