In America today, reports show that food insecurity is a pressing issue for over 35 million people. With rising grocery prices, inflation, and the lasting impacts of the pandemic—understanding the complexities of hunger has never been more imperative. Mariana Chilton explores this issue in the book, The Painful Truth about Hunger in America: Why We Must Unlearn Everything We Think We Know—and Start Again with some new insights and perspectives. Mariana Chilton is an author, professor, and founder of the Drexel University — Center for Hunger-Free Communities. In The Painful Truth About Hunger in America, Chilton takes a radical and urgent new approach to addressing hunger and poverty in the US. Where traditionally researchers, policymakers, and advocates have approached providing food through donations or non-profit organizations, Chilton focuses on the fundamental structures which she asserts have a keen interest in maintaining food stratification. Chilton suggests that the solution to food insecurity lies beyond providing food itself and will have to take both a political and spiritual approach in fixing this crisis. Drawing on 25 years of research, programming, and advocacy efforts, Chilton argues that food insecurity is created and maintained by those in power. To demonstrate her point, Chilton calls back to the original wounds suffered in this country — through a history of colonization, genocide, and enslavement. Drawing on intimate interviews she has conducted with many Black and Brown women, Chilton sheds light on the experience of hunger as linked with trauma and gender-based violence, violence with the natural world, and with ourselves. The Painful Truth about Hunger in America not only reinvigorates our commitment to uprooting the causes of poverty and discrimination but also points to a more generative and humane world where everyone can be nourished. Mariana Chilton, PhD, MPH, is a Professor at Drexel University's Dornsife School of Public Health and Director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities, a research and advocacy center focused on addressing hunger and economic insecurity. She founded Witnesses to Hunger, a movement amplifying women's voices in the fight against poverty, and leads the Building Wealth and Health Network, which promotes entrepreneurship in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Her work on food insecurity, trauma, and human rights has influenced national policies, and she has advised Congress, Sesame Street, and the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Chilton's research has been featured in major media outlets, including The Washington Post and CBS News. Agueda Pacheco Flores is a Seattle-based freelancer with a focus on culture, arts, Southend communities, and the Latinx diaspora. Anthony shares the inspiring journey of the intercollegiate "Give a Gallon Challenge," a statewide competition among California colleges that aims to fight food insecurity by donating milk to local food banks. This year, Anthony and his team surpassed all expectations, delivering over 3,400 gallons of milk — over 50,000 servings — to nine Central Valley food banks, including the oldest in California, the Central California Food Bank. Tune in to hear about the challenges, the community support, and the impact of this initiative as Anthony continues to bridge the gap between dairy producers and communities in need.

Sandy Hook Elementary. Las Vegas. Pulse nightclub. Virginia Tech. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Sometimes it seems as though time is measured by the distance between mass shootings. But how did we get here? In this week’s episode, correspondent Agueda Pacheco Flores talks with journalist Seamus McGraw about his book From a Taller Tower: The Rise of the American Mass Shooter, which chronicles the answer to that question. He shares how the first mass shooting took place from atop the University of Texas tower in 1966, unleashing a new reality: the fear that any of us may be targeted by a killer. Addressing individual cases, he explores how we as a nation have become desensitized to the shock and pain, allowing political statements guaranteeing inaction to go unchecked. McGraw asks us to confront our obsession with the shooters—and explores the isolation, narcissism, and sense of victimhood that fan their obsessions. Drawing on the experiences of survivors and first responders, as well as the knowledge of mental health experts, he challenges our notion of the “good guy with a gun,” the idolization of guns (including his own), and the reliability of traumatized memory. Ultimately, McGraw invites us to remember that we can make a change. Don’t miss this urgent and timely conversation—and stay in the know about what’s happening in this moment at Town Hall Seattle. Seamus McGraw is a journalist and frequent contributor to the New York Times op-ed page, as well as to the Huffington Post, Playboy, Popular Mechanics, and Fox Latino. He is the author of Country: Dispatches from the Frack Zone, Betting the Farm on a Drought: Stories from the Front Lines of Climate Change, and A Thirsty Land: The Fight for Water in Texas. Have you ever wanted to ask Enrique Iglesias, Descemer Bueno, and Gente De Zona about their 2014 hit “Bailando”? What’s the story behind that Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine hit “Conga,” the one you that makes it irresistible to move? How does Daddy Yankee feel about being the “King of Reggaeton,” and were he and Luis Fonsi surprised by the outcry when the “Despacito” lyrics were translated to English? Billboard’s VP of Latin music Leila Cobo joined us in conversation with local journalist Agueda Pacheco Flores to answer all of our burning questions about the last five decades of the genre, gathered in her book Decoding “Despacito”: An Oral History of Latin Music. She collected oral histories—veritable treasure trove of never-before heard anecdotes and insight—from interviews with a who’s who of Latin music artists, executives, observers, and players. From the salsa born and bred in the streets of New York City, to Puerto Rican reggaetón and bilingual chart-toppers, she took us inside the hits, to the inner sanctum of the creative minds behind the tracks that have defined eras and become hallmarks of history. Leila Cobo is a classical pianist, novelist, and executive Editor for Billboard. She has published two award-winning novels, The Second Time We Met and Tell Me Something True. Her biography on Jenni Rivera remained among the top 10 most-sold books in Spanish in the United States for more than 25 consecutive weeks and was named a top read by publications such as Latina and People en Español.

And just like that, we've arrived at the final episode of Changing the Narrative Pacoima. We will miss all 28 of our Vaughn Next Century Learning Center podcasters! We've enjoyed the laughter, the challenges, and the evolution of 'Changing the Narrative-Pacoima' from a bunch of ideas into 10 episodes! Sometimes the best way to change the narrative is simply by being yourself.  Featured here: Jessica Esparza and Kiera Moreno cheer for cheer squad. Is it a sport? Agueda de Santiago answers "How do you see yourself? How do others see you?" Brothers are bothersome, grandmas are great! But it's how you see yourself that matters most. Anthony Hernandez, Analiss Fernandez, and Kimberly Duenas share a public service announcement for  Pacoima Beautiful, the only environmental social justice organization in the San Fernando Valley. And lastly, The Ashleys Ashley-Lozano and Ashly Gonzales, with a little help from Leilah Ortega delight with their friendship.  Changing the Narrative is made possible by a generous grant from The California Arts Council, a state agency. The BBC (Big Brain Club) invites you on campus to have The Vaughn Experience. Eighth-grade- not always easy! First up, Wilfredo Bacca, always being caught lacking himself,  interviews security guard Aaron Camacho. In a "dope conversation" recorded by tech director Jenrry Gonzales, we learn why Mr. Camacho is respected by even the toughest of kids. The secret is he respects them. A former "lacker" himself, his empathy comes from understanding. Then, interviewing her group partners, Jenrry and Wilfredo, producer Agueda de Santiago, highlights the challenges and success of eighth-grade life.   Running time: 15 min We want to acknowledge the three students that did not turn in their media release forms. They contributed to Mr. Camacho's interview with astute questions and comments that spurred some of the answers you hear. They worked equipment and helped with the project overall behind the scenes. Good luck with volleyball and soccer! Agueda, Wilfredo, and Jenrry  Aaron Camacho Changing the Narrative is made possible by a generous grant from The California Arts Council, a state agency. After Levi's presentation of past, present and future murals, first-time podcasters Agueda de Santiago and Aiden Robles Mares lead the group Q & A.
