Welcome to the afterparty. We're gaming 'till we drop. Which might be pretty soon tbh because it turns out we're not as young as we once were. Alba articulates why we're still up gaming when all sensible souls have retired for the evening. Kenan's in charge of the quiz show this week which proves to be as bad an idea as it was last time. We explore the etymology of "meta" and Kenan recaps recent travels. Then we discuss games that keep us up when we're powering down, including Friday, Paleo, Hadrian's Wall, Lost Expedition, Eila and Something Shiny, Aqua, Cascadia, Meadow, Calico, Beacon Patrol, 8-bit difficulty, the Dylan of game design, modeling food chains, fast set-up, tactility, escalating challenges, and the limits of one's appetite for complexity. You tell us which games traipse across your tabletops in the wee hours, including Codenames Duet, The Seventh Citadel, Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, Black Sonata, Akropolis, Nemesis: Lockdown, Next Station London, Unlock, Board Game Arena, and whatever Marvel Snap is. Finally, we congratulate ourselves for solving all the problems and challenge our listeners to be cool like us. Music by Alba and the Mighty Lions and Kenan. Sleep tight. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's time for another deep dive - this time into the collected works of Czech game guru Vlaada Chvátil (whose name we hope we pronounced mostly right most of the time, but no promises). Join us as: We examine some of the...questionable design choices of Vlaada's first board game. We talk about the metallic composition of these famously flimsy early miniatures. We learn that Frank likes Talisman, and Mike dislikes that. Brian gratuitously quotes Walt Whitman. We talk about excellent digital versions of two of Vlaada's early classics. We fail to adequately convey the sheer madness of Bunny Bunny Moose Moose. And we mention the very clever twist that makes Codenames: Duet stand out. As always, thank you for listening. If you have the time to give us an iTunes review, please do - it really helps us grow! We'd also love to have you visit our website and let us know what kinds of games we should discuss next. You're also more than welcome to comment on the episode page, or our Facebook page, or tag @ascentofboardgames on Bluesky. Whatever way you prefer to share your opinions with us, we'd love to hear them. As always, we appreciate your listening - stay safe out there, and happy gaming! In this episode Adrian, Mike and Dan recap our recent collaboration with ComicCon and discuss the various gateway games we taught to the community. In Sizzling Games, Adrian has been frothing over fast food franchises, Mike has been painting patterns of paper, and Dan has been scouting the seas, sands and the stars. We also recap last week's Question of the Pod: What are you favourite innovations in board games? Thanks to everyone who contributed and shared their photos with us on Discord and the Facebook Community. Finally, in Swear An Oath, Adrian squared away Food Chain Magnate and has already ordered the expansion, Dan hasn't managed to get Sleeping Gods to the table yet, and Mike enjoyed Dog Park. New oaths include Pampero (Adrian), a solo-play Wayfarers of the South Tigris (Dan), and Zombicide: Undead or Alive (Mike). Question of the Pod: What was your gateway game that got you into this hobby? ASK THE BELLHOP Tonight's question comes from Tabletop Bellhop patreon patron Jeff Szusz who writes: It's common advice that you should learn a game yourself before you get it to the table and bore two or three other people trying to learn it - but some folks may find it hard to sit with a game, alone, and really figure it out. Also, sometimes you're at a public play event and want to try something nobody at your table owns. Have you any tips for a group trying to unbox and learn a game together for the first time? 8 pieces of advice given to us either about our relationship or on money that we ignored. Some of them we were right in ignoring them while others we were wrong. Here are the 8 things we ignored, but listen to the full episode to find out the stories behind all of them!1. Don't go to college with your high school sweetheart.2. Don't get married in your early 20s.3. You should date some more people before you "settle down."4. You should go down to one car/you shouldn't go down to one car.5. Start investing right away.6. Pay yourself rent while you live for free.7. Keep your credit card for emergencies and the rewards.8. Don't quit your job. On that last point, we recommend the book Quitter by Jon Acuff if you're thinking about quitting your job and how to do it!Finally for our date night idea, grab Codenames Duet for a fun game to play as a couple. It takes teamwork and good communication!

Teotihuacan on Board Game Arena, ASK THE BELLHOP Today we have a question from Patron of the show Roger Meloche who asks: “I have a question regarding Power Creep. Not the kind you find in games, but the power creep experienced by the players. I was introduced to a game called “Great Western Trail”. I had never experienced anything like this, it was all completely new to me. To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. I remember somebody saying the game was easy, before we played it and I am sure they really thought it was, but I wouldn’t call it a gateway game. Of course, now that I’ve played many different games, I would take a game like Great Western Trail in stride and really enjoy it. This brings me to my first question; How do you determine if a given player’s skill and experience is a good match for a new game they are about to play, given that a player’s skill level is very subjective at best? As far as power creep goes; As my skill increases and I look for greater and greater challenges, am I going to lose interest in most of the current games in my collection as I pursue this hobby?” Links: Weighing in on Game Complexity, A Heavy Topic - Podcast Ep 38, Board Game Geek, Weight on BGG, Race for the Galaxy, How to pick what board game to play? How do you go choosing the games to let go? Is it the time since last time on the table or the overall time on the table? Should I still spare the gem that gets played too seldom? How about games with a personal bond or a signed game from the designer? Where do you sell your used (or even shrink-wrapped) game? Friendly local game store? eBay? Facebook? Other places? How do you decide the correct price for the game? What if it is a collector's item? How do you find these things out? After carefully making his way Through The Ages, Mike's partner wants him to be the King Of Toyko next. Fresh from Exploding Kittens, Adrian agress to take the plunge into Deep Madness. Fatherhood is the overall theme of this week's episode. Imagine Harry Chapin's Cat's in the Cradle, except with the father played by Vladimir the Great and the son by Svyatopolk the Accursed. "When you coming home, dad?" asks the Accursed, to which the reply is "I don't know when. But we'll get together then, son." And then, the son allegedly murders several of his siblings in a vicious power struggle. Just like in the song! Folk music of the seventies is more bloodthirsty than many people recall. In this episode, we have TWO Summerers! Eric interviews his brother, and Geoff talks about teamwork. We also review some Escape Room Games, Paladins of the West Kingdom, Getaway Driver,Codenames: Duet, Illimat, ...and then we died. We also answer a few questions, and finally end the show talking about our top ten games that start with the letter "C".
Not everything has to be a competition, because this week we're talking about cooperation. I know, it's weird, in some games, you're not actually trying to beat the other players! We're counting down our favourite co-op games, "favourite" of course being a relative term in Kalen's case. In the War Room Redeaux, we reflect back on Century: Spice Road, Codenames Duet and The Others. We recently got some plays in of Stonebound Saga from Sky Kingdom Games, and we definitely want to let everyone know exactly what its all about! We've got no particular agenda. We're just going to sit back and chat. Marc and Matt are joined by Orion who is all the way across "the pond" in Scotland. The inaugural episode kicks off with the best guest in the history of podcasting. Listen in as Alexis makes up her own version of Settlers of Catan, and then the Double D’s navigate their way through her peculiar tastes to pick the perfect game: Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition from Fantasy Flight Games . We also breakdown (and sometimes tear down) Codenames, Codenames Pictures, and Codenames Duet from CGE with special guest Annette. And finally, in That’s Ridiculous, Darin tries to convince a very skeptical Daron and a more open-minded Lorelei that a simple $3 notebook just won’t do when it comes to gaming.

It’s DATENIGHT! The podcast where a wife and her husband talk about the games they play on date nights. We focus on games that are great for 2 players. Each episode is short and sweet, just the way you like it, right honey? In Episode 8, we review the spy themed cooperative word game Codenames Duet. This episode is sponsored by Game Trayz
Hello all! Remember us? The lil 'ol Not Safe For Worker Placement Podcast? We'd never forget you, the faithful listener waiting with baited breath for the next scintillating episode... Never fear it has arrived with the speed and punctuality of a procrastinating tortoise! In this episode we talk Codenames Duet, Photosynthesis, Fallout and several other recent game plays. Then we break down randomness and randomness mitigation in our feature segment. In IRL we get in the spirit of the season and review Lee's work Christmas party and then recommend the new Netflix show Dark! Shelley and I get a chance to delve into one of the buzzy-est games of Essen (Thanks Alan How!!!) and the new 2-player version of a modern classic Biosphere from DDD Verlag and designed by Christoph Bauer, Max Kleinschroth, Philipp Rösch, and Tilman Schneider and Codenames Duet from CGE and designed by Vlaada Chvátil and Scot Eaton
Codenames: Duet offers a tense two player transformation of the original. You and your partner must contact 15 agents using a grid of word cards and a very limited number of clues. The big problem is each of you only know half the agents in play!
