If you're looking for advice on quitting your job, this episode is for you! This is what we spoke about during the episodeIn our early 20s, we realised that life wasn't just about work. We highly recommend watching the documentary Finding Joe.Our business is passion-driven, in that we love what we're sharing and creating. When we stop feeling that bliss or experiencing that joy and passion, we pivot and make a change.Mindset is your biggest tool when it comes to business. No formula or guide will work exactly the same in your situation. But of course, these guides, people and experts are there to help, motivate and inspire. How did we begin our business? From posting our journey on Carla's Instagram to blogging to coming up with the Merrymaker brand to collaborating with other brands (influencer marketing, before it was a term) and building digital and physical products. How we managed our finances when we quit our jobs, not very well! We had such little awareness of our financial situation and we do not recommend that at all. We recommend the book Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. On the launch of MerryBody we had seven members and now we have over 800 members.Jarrod, our Internet Godfather, helped us build not just one, not two, but three apps. If you find someone enthusiastic for your vision and willing to help you, count yourself very lucky! We do!You don't need to take that leap straight away. "He had been out running and collapsed on the side of the road. No one knew what had happened and they thought he had been hit by a car so they didn't want to touch him. A woman, named Valerie was driving by and noticed the commotion around a lifeless body. She jumped out of her car in the middle of traffic and started giving CPR. When she initially started, people shouted at her to stop as she could be causing more damage, but she said she knew he needed serious help. He was lying on the ground with his eyes wide open and had no pulse, so she immediately started CPR. She performed CPR for 5 mins on her own..." This excerpt is from our guest's cousin, recapping the first cardiac arrest Rhys experienced at age 26.  We'd heard bits and pieces of Rhys' journey during Yoga Teacher Training (this is how we met) but after sitting down with Rhys for just over 2 hours, hearing his story being told so openly and all at once was... and that's where we get stuck. There are so many words to describe Rhys' story. When you listen you'll experience one, two, maybe all of these: inspiration, gratitude, compassion, empathy, passion.  This is an excerpt from Rhys, 'a former letter to myself', recapping just after his first cardiac arrest: "This event turns your world upside down, 2 days later you wake up in Hammersmith hospital and start to make sense of all the crazy things that have happened. That outlet of running and hardcore physical exercise to alleviate your stress has been taken away from you, and once you return home you fall into a deep bought of depression. You decide to remain in London, and start back at work soon after getting out of hospital going about your daily life as if nothing has happened. Denial is what seems to be at play here. You are very weak and constantly fatigued following the accident. Working, partying, and the inability to see the severity of what has happened to you causes several problems in your life. You continue to fall into a deeper state of depression and soon you decide to leave teaching for a while." You can tell just from reading this that this episode is very different to anything we've ever shared before. We focus on the story and then we get into the big learnings that have come from Rhys' experience.  Rhys goes on to finish his letter: "Have faith in your ability and always be kind to the people around you. Spend every day mastering your health and fostering strong and meaningful relationships. Your journey is only just beginning." Be sure to tune into this one, it's full of gold, just like Rhys.  Support Rhys' Everyday Hero fundraiser for Heart Care Foundation. Check out Drop Consulting: aims to enhance understanding of self, culture, wellbeing and performance. Merrymaker mantra of the week... the judge of all Earth shall do right. Which means, lead by example. Do YOU first, which will then influence others around you.  Sending out huge LOVE to Rhys for being so vulnerable and open with his story. The Gold Coast is such a cool place. Most of you know we grew up in Canberra (we love Canberra) it's sahhhh different to the Gold Coast. You might think of Gold Coast, and automatically think of Surfers Paradise and partying hard. But there's so much more! And there's this polar opposite thing going on. Like with vibes, attitudes, people etc. It's interesting to observe. Like there's one side where everything seems so materialistic and fake, and then the other side with this realness, connection, yoga, spirit, holistic healthy vibe thing.  Another cool thing about the GC is the abundance of crazy cool events and workshops.  Emma met Kyle Laz aka the Chocolate Wizard aka the magical herb man at his botanical boutique high tea (like fo-realz, how could I not go to that?!).  "Herbal medicine is where you find the balance of ART and SCIENCE. It is the beginning of a path, one of learning and sharing, To alleviate suffering, the fundamental intention. Encircled in MAGIC and MYSTICAL processes." Kyle Laz We're super pumped about this podcast. There's so much magic to listening to someone talk about something they're passionate about... and even better when you know nothing about it. There is so much magic to different perspectives. Love love love.  Here's the stuff we talk about... How plants and herbs can help you heal yo-self.  Cannabis, how the laws are slowly changing. The health benefits. We included a disclaimer about this, yay our first disclaimer on our podcast hehe. Since we've rarely talked about cannabis and also since lots of you listen with your beautiful kiddies! And we love that! But we get it, this may not be your vibe.  Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! We also eat it! Oh, and also... apparently it helps you lose weight (we will take that!). How plants, nature, herbs help you connect to yourself, to others, to spirit or your higher self.  Power of intention.  Harry Potter pops up. Happy dance!  Alchemy.  Shamanic ceremonies. Ayahuasca in particular and how too many people are doing it without researching it. Oh, so much more! Go and listen! Ahhhh! And then come and join us for a Merry Chocolate party YAY. Like actually.  Let us know what you think of the episode! We're keen to have Kyle back on the show to go deeper into a particular subject. Watch this space! Merrymaker mantra of the week: I live in a friendly universe.  Ahhhhh we hope you can feel the love vibes.  Links to stuff we talk about... Kyle's Instagram, check it out. Watch the video of this podcast here. Emma and Carla are so much fun that we highly recommend you listen or watch the podcast to get the most out of this episode! Their enthusiasm is infectious, and Gin had to make an extra special effort to stay on-topic and not get carried away. The girls begin by telling us about their journey to becoming successful businesswomen. It started in 2012 when they changed their lifestyle habits and Carla began posting on her personal Instagram account about it. There was huge interest in their content, so they began blogging about their story. They loved what they were doing, so started attending blogging conferences and learning everything they could about making it a full-time gig. The sisters eventually quit their government jobs and started making eBooks, courses, and even an app. Instagram They started their Instagram domination by sharing photos and hashtags, but are the first to admit that these days, so much content gets lost in the online noise that a more in-depth strategy is needed to grow. Carla explains that Instagram is a useful platform for connecting with people with similar interests. The sisters use Instagram to: Raise awareness Entertain Inspire Educate But be warned, it’s not a quick route to success. People may be followers for six months or more before even clicking through to your site. Their recommendation for WordPress consultants is to use social media differently. If your content is a little dry, “Give them the option to fall in love with the whole story.” Be authentic and it will resonate with your followers. They also use Facebook a lot, which has now taken over from Instagram for the number of click-throughs to their website. Emma explains that MeetEdgar has been a game changer for them in terms of ease of promoting evergreen content like their most loved recipes. “This has tripled our traffic from Facebook to the blog.” The girls usually publish around four Facebook posts a day and four Instagram posts a day, but are quick to add that there is no magic number and that the main thing is to be consistent with whatever you are posting. Final words to the wise: It takes time and needs momentum. Like blogging, seeing results from social media requires a long-term strategy. FaceBook Ads The Merrymaker Sisters use Facebook ads in two ways... When they launch a product, they use the old ‘pixel on sales page’ strategy for re-targeting. They use it as part of their Opt-In funnel. For example, they offer a free 7-day meal plan that then goes to a trip-wire product. If the person doesn’t buy the trip-wire, they are then targeted for something else. Gin asked the girls how they pinpoint exactly what their audience likes. As well as using surveys, they also ask questions directly on Facebook, finding that people love to feel as though they are contributing. Build Trust Through Connection “We build trust by personally responding to all emails and posts on Facebook. People then get to know us. It feels so good to connect one on one and help someone. It’s why we’re here in the first place - to help people. Sometimes you can forget this because you’re stuck in the numbers and the measurements, but it’s the reason why we do what we do!” Blogging When the business first started, the girls were blogging every day because they loved it so much. They’ve experimented over the years and now post about three times a week. The key is knowing what your target audience are searching for online, and then tailoring that to an article that gives away engaging, good quality information for free. For the girls, that content topic is easy - free recipes! From there, they focus on optimising the page and getting people into funnels. “Every Business should be prioritising blogging” Merrymaker Sisters on the WPE Podcast “Whenever anyone asks me what I can do to market their brand, I always tell them by blogging,” says Carla. And here’s why… You can do it for free You are letting people into the business and they are getting to know you and the business You’re helping people and building trust which means they are more likely to come back and then eventually buy something. The girls give a fantastic example of Bronnie Ware, who wrote a blog post about what she knew and felt strongly. Her post, “Regrets of the Dying” resonated with so many people that she went on to write a best-selling book based on the article. The link is below - you HAVE to check it out; it's a great example of how writing about something that resonates with you might just strike a chord with more people than you think. Merry Tip: - Remember that it’s about consistency and quality over volume. Write about something that you want to write about; something that resonates with you; something that is authentic and real to you or your business. Living a Stress-Free and Fun Life Continuing from Mental Health Month, Gin knew the Merrymaker sisters were the perfect entrepreneurs to ask for tips on how we can prioritize mental health. Carla’s advice was to always come back to the present moment. Emma explained that it’s impossible to live a totally stress-free life and that you need to find the thing that helps you get rid of that stress and do it! Do what makes you feel happy, calm or gives you joy every day.

We talk happiness, mindset shifts and life in general. Pretty sure we even get on the whole what is the meaning of life? topic (oh oh, haha). Yes, we ramble, yes we laugh and yes it's a whole lotta MERRY! So if you're looking for a dose of something magical each week, #GetMerry is the show for you! It's the perfect show to listen to if you want to start adding more positivity into your life. We also end each episode with a Merrymaker Mantra. And this week's is: Follow your freaking bliss. You've heard us bang on about this before. Yah?!  It's an adapted mantra by the philosopher, Joseph Campbell. And it's all kinds of magical epic. "Follow your bliss and doors will open where there were once only walls." Holy shit that quote changed our lives forever and ever. We first heard it when we watched the documentary, Finding Joe. Seriously, that is compulsory watching for anyone reading this. You will love it. But first, finish this and listen to the podcast! When we started Merrymakers, there was no strategy, no business in mind, no nothing really. We just had this something telling us to start writing and creating recipes. So we did! We were having so much fun doing it, so we did more of it. And we learned about blogging. And social media. And newsletters. Oh my! Then we watched Finding Joe. And then we realised that Merrymakers... well, that was our bliss. And this whole Follow Your Bliss concept was pretty freaking epic. And apparently revolutionary to us (even though it was all over the internet!) and so we started sharing this message out to our Instagram followers. We'd share it once a day, almost. Follow your bliss. Do what you love! Follow the fun! All the inspirational quotes you can think of. And do not scoff... we know you love them too! At this time we were still working in our full-time soul-sucking government desk jobs, seriously we need a shorter name to describe it. But the message was loud and clear. Merrymakers was our bliss and if we followed it, if we kept going, opportunities would flow right on in. It turned into the perfect kick up the butt too. We'd been sharing the quotes, inspiring others to do what they love, but here we were still working those soul-sucking jobs and not REALLY following our bliss. Not really living our truth. We were good at speaking the speak but... doing the do? We weren't there yet. So the quitting of our jobs came about just 1 and a half years into our Merrymaker journey with no plan, no strategy, no money and a fat mortgage and USA trip booked in!  What were we thinking? We weren't! But Joseph Campbell said that if we followed it... doors would open. (Yes, we're a bit cray cray). Oh and that they did! The day we quit our jobs, a sponsorship... In episode 73 we take a look back at 2016 and the year that it was! Holey moley... big freaking year!  Take a listen! We have lotsa fun in this episode! Most loved moment of 2016? Carla:  My most loved moment in 2016 probably I'm gonna say our road trip, L.A to San Francisco it was freaking amazing and the best thing ever. Emma: There was just so many epic things that I can't even think which one but I think it would be all the traveling combined! What was your most favorite travel moment? Carla: Most fav. travel moment would be when we went to Bangkok and we were on a roof top bar looking over the amazing city at all the lights all the stars and just crazy meeting amazing people. Emma: I think both America trips and Bangkok trip and also Melbourne trip, going to the races, going to the Melbourne cup. What about your biggest lesson of 2016? Emma: Biggest lesson would be 'focus on joy' like just always focus on adding more joy to your day and your projects and whatever you're doing because, life is short and you don't know when it's gonna end. Like you just don't know. So it's like, what's the point of getting really stressed out about work, business, relationships when actually you don't know your time is up? Focus on adding joy and if you find yourself being cranky, being nasty because of just a bad mood like have stuff that can get out of your funk. Be aware of what is creating that funk. Figure out how to make it get better just self-awareness of that, self-awareness of happiness. Favorite Podcast Episode? That we recorded with another person we interviewed... Emma: I think all the ones with Dan Norris because they were live, and also Mark Manson's podcast. He was so helpful, he has this really good perspective of life stuff and to make it less sucky, he's really awesome. I would definitely recommend going back in listening to that one. Carla: My favorite podcast episode I'm gonna say yes to both what you said (Mark Manson and Dan Norris) I agree with you. But also Hal Elrod. His episode helped so many people and it helped us as well. Favorite book you read this year? Carla and Emma: Create or Hate by Dan Horris Emma: The art of War  by Steven Pressfield, The Subtle of Not Giving a Fuck Favorite Restaurant/Dinner Moment of 2016? Emma: We've had so many dinners this year! Carla: Can I just combine all the bonita bonitas together? Emma: Mexican foods, mexican tacos and the best margaritas! What about overseas dinner? Emma: Phuket, in Melbourne when we went to Facny Hanks! Carla: What about Ojai when we had Pizza with Derek and Marleen under the fairy lights?! What about the Monterey... What about in New York we went to Mexican? Hardest Moment of 2016? Emma: There was a lot of struggles with direction, clarity, we made mistakes or what to focus our energy on, it's just being a massive year of stepping up and not quite making it. We were stepping up, learning but everything kinda little but BLAH! Carla: The hardest moment to deal with has been the book. Because I thought that with the book we learned our lesson from the last book and then this book happened and I was really excited about it and then it's just had to so many delays. Emma: You know what's been the biggest lesson for me? No more books just stick to online. Tune into the episode as we take you way back to January 2016 the 1st of Jan. We go through everything that's happened in Merrymaker Land. The Plan for 2017... our focus will be.. Today on the #MerryBiz podcast we're like SUPER dooper excited to talk about optins.  When we first started our business/blog we had no idea that we 'should be' collecting email addresses. You know we're not big on 'should be's' but collecting email addresses is definitely a YES when it comes to running any business. Yep, we don't think email newsletters are JUST for online business. If you have a brick and mortar business, sell products, services whatever it is you do (or plan to do)... collecting email addresses is a GOOD idea. From the get go. Like if you just started a blog... collect. Collect. Collect! Once you have email addresses you can send AMAZING email newsletters to these people. This allows your audience to get to know you better, you can build trust and you can provide your audience with SO much value that you'll blow them away and they'll love you forever and ever. #truestory Writing emails to your audience feels that little more special because they've said YES to you! They WANT to hear from you. Whenever we write our emails we keep this in mind, try to provide value our audience can't find anywhere else and pretty much just treat them like our best friends. We seriously love them.  In episode 44 you'll learn: What is an optin? Our journey from no optin, to first optin, to second optin to NOW. The importance of collecting emails. What to do next when you've collected an email. How to start thinking about what your optin will be.
