The time really flew by on today's episode with Ryan Berman of Courageous Brands, as we let Ryan's stories interweave into the show. Ryan brings to the table a different perspective than most marketing people. We discuss his stair stepper approach to marketing and how everything is connected. We also talk about how he created an actual city location, in Funner, CA and the magic behind that marketing campaign. One of the things that we love about this conversation is to start by stepping into the shoes of who you are selling to, which is something we intuitively know, but don't always practice. Think of how you would want to be marketed to, which is one of the toughest things, but remember the customers are holding all the cards. Ryan also discusses how, if you have a boring brand, do something to change that fact, and create stories around the brand to make it exciting. Also, make sure you listen to the end, as we read some of our recent reviews - maybe it's from you! And after you have enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out our conversations with Dan Norris and Ryan Lee, who have both created successful brands by offering value and fun in a different way that makes them stand out from the rest. “We're living in this world now, where we are inundated with 7,000 messages a day. We covered a lot on our show today with Massimo Chieruzzi, as he tells his story through the episode while pulling out lessons about content marketing and lead scoring. This episode is part comedy and a whole lot of insights and tactics about content marketing. You’ll hear about some of the pinnacle moments Massimo had while building AdEspresso, his content marketing strategies, his thoughts about startups and the ups and down of moving your business to a new country. We also talk about how he was able to build up AdEspresso in such a short time by doing a lot of split tests, with actionable information and sharing the data of what they found. They also created a giant swipe file, which anyone can make for their own audience. Now you have a page on your site that’s very attractive where you are aggregating information, getting a ton of backlinks without having to create a 5,000 word post. We also talk about his big exit from the company, and how so many have this idea they will exit, retire onto easy street, but that’s usually never the case. You’ll also want to check out Massimo’s manifesto he wrote which is all about revenue acceleration on his new venture, Breadcrumbs.io. There’s a lot of principles in there that pulls a lot of the nuggets he references, such as the value exchange. Once you’re done be sure to listen to our chats with Lisa Buyer and Dan Norris for more tips and tactics on branding and building up a strong brand identity. “That’s a huge asset, because your advertising will be cheaper...people are more willing to click on the ad because they recognize the brand” - Massimo Chieruzzi Some Topics We Discussed Include: Bad at selling or hate talking to people? If you’re going to do some kind of paid marketing, you better pick one and be good at it. But what if you weren’t good at any of those things? This is where compound marketing comes in – a concept that serial entrepreneur and bestselling author Dan Norris gradually built after many years of simply doing what he thought was fun and he was reasonably good at. After selling multiple businesses, Dan finally reflected on the unique components of what he was doing and came up with content, community, brand, and story. In this conversation with Paul Higgins, Dan explains his approach in each of these fundamental components. He argues that going organic is still the best way to grow a business rather than spending all your time and money on short-term strategies. You may disagree with some of what Dan has to say here, but his results definitely speak for themselves! Today’s guest is someone who’s been in the industry since the late 90’s which is when we discovered Ryan Lee and have followed his work since then. We, along with a bunch of other high-level entrepreneurs have contributed content to his membership area. On today’s show, we talk about how to dial in your branding to build a cohesive brand for your business. We also talk about how to build a community around your brand, even if your brand is a physical product or a more boring brand. Plus we chat all about email marketing, Ryan’s obsession with the 80’s and how to inject the things you love in your personal life into your marketing and business. We have Dan Norris on the show today, and he’s someone who has accomplished quite a lot, with a somewhat different approach to marketing. He focuses on four core pillars: branding, community, storytelling, and content marketing. In this episode, we do a deep dive into all four of those. After founding WP Curve, which was subsequently sold to GoDaddy, Dan started a new venture, Black Hops Brewing in Australia. You’ll hear Dan discuss how he has created one of the biggest and well-known brands in his country (voted the #1`craft brewery in Australia), all with basically no ad spend. There’s a similar thread in the way he’s marketed both his WP Curve brand and his craft beer brand, and it all comes down to his concept of Compound Marketing, which is also the basis behind his new book. When you’re done, check out our conversation with Lisa Cherney for more content strategies and how to be real to your audience even if that means being putting off others, and get some advice from Anthony Constantino, who also runs a super fun company that really resonates with his customers. “It helps to take this approach where you’ve got these things compounding behind the scenes without you necessarily having to do a whole lot. I see our competitors buying billboards and doing paid ads and I’m glad we don’t have to do all that.” - Dan Norris Some Topics We Discussed Include: Taking a bath in beer? 7 years ago I read 7-day Startup and that book was literally the roadmap for me launching my first business. Since then, I've watched Dan exit his company WP Curve and set up Australia's fastest growing craft brewery. Dan has grown multiple businesses without spending money on marketing. I wanted to dive into this to provide a different perspective - Dan's philosophy is one of building assets over time vs leads in the short term. Listen in to find out why your marketing should focus on long-term asset-building, rather than short term quick wins.
On today's episode, I am talking with Dan Norris. Dan is the kung fu master that taught me a lot of the foundational writing, creation, and storytelling skills that are the foundation for this podcast, my books, and a lot of the work I do. It is very exciting to have him on the show. Dan continues to be a prolific creator at WP Curve and we get to hear about his WP Curve origin story and life since the startup. He is still applying many of the same marketing strategies he used to grow the startup in many different areas with lots of different successes. Dan Norris is a serial entrepreneur, award-winning content marketer, international speaker, and the author of 5 (soon to be 6) number 1 Amazon best-selling business books. In June 2013 after failing at entrepreneurship for 7 years, he founded wpcurve.com, a worldwide team of WordPress developers, providing unlimited small fixes and support, 24 / 7 for a low monthly fee. After becoming profitable in 23 days, WP Curve grew to a team of 40, 850+ customers and passed an annual run rate of over $1m AUD within 2 years and a year later was sold to GoDaddy. Dan currently works full time as the Co-founder and CEO of one of Australia's fastest-growing craft beer breweries, Black Hops Brewing. In 2015 Black Hops brewed the world's first beer for the biggest entertainment franchise on earth, Call of Duty. In 2018 Black Hops was voted Australia's Champion Small Brewery at the AIBA awards, Australia's number 1 beer competition. In This Episode: Our stories can be very powerful for our business. Learning these stories over time and how to frame them can shape your business and your outcome in huge ways. It is important to do things that compound in value as opposed to a more transactional approach. He does things that compound over time and build up things that are very hard for competitors to replicate. The people who are successful are making a lot of stuff. Meryl is a Chartered Accountant who specializes in cloud accounting software Xero. She founded Bean Ninjas in July 2015 with $1,000 following Dan Norris's 7 Day Startup methodology. Now 4 years later the company operates in the US, UK and Hong Kong and has a distributed team of 15 people. Meryl and I talk about why it's so important to keep good records from the beginning of your business - even if you only have one rental property. We also chat about what Bean Ninjas does for clients, how to effectively keep track of your receipts, and what you need to know about how to use your accounting software. The Get Paid Podcast: The Stark Reality of Entrepreneurship and Being Your Own Boss
This week, I am excited to have the opportunity to interview Dan Norris, co-founder of WP Curve - a service-based company specializing in helping entrepreneurs fix WordPress problems - and the author of “The 7-Day Startup” book. Dan explains his rocky road to success, starting (and failing) several startup businesses throughout the years before collaboratively working to create WP Curve. We talk about the ups and downs in his business journey, suggestions and advice that he received before launching WP Curve, and the many lessons that he feels every aspiring startup business owner should know before starting their business. Dan also shares a little information about his Australia-based craft beer brewing company and how starting this business is very different from developing a successful online startup. He explains his idea of “differentiation,” the difference between a startup and a full-fledged business, and provides tips on what he believes new startup business owners should focus on and what they should “forget about.”
Thrilled to be joined today by Emma and Carla Pappas, of The Merrymaker Sisters. These two are super energetic, fun and refreshing and I know that hearing their story will absolutely inspire others to take action, make changes in their lives and do the things they're passionate about. When The Merrymaker Sisters created their online business, I learned that they never really thought about the perfect avatar that they were trying to attract. (Something we're often told to do as business owners). Instead, they just created the brand and business that they knew people would find value in, and learned and made changes along the way. Their inspiring and health conscious brand, attracts mostly women of all ages, and these women have realized that there's a different way of living that fits each individual. Emma and Carla have honed in on how to help each woman discover exactly what is right for them. Born DOERS, Emma and Carla know that the best way to make changes in your life is just to take action. Their best advice for new entrepreneurs: Get started now and put yourself out there. Just do the best you can do right now and make tweaks and improvement as you go. Equally important is to not get so tied up in what other people are posting – compare and despair gets you nowhere. Everyone's content (from Marie Forleo to Gary Vaynerchuck) had room for improvement when they were first starting out. “Compare to yourself, don't compare to others because that's paralyzing.” You may just end up hating what you're doing and sucking all the joy out of it. An integral lesson they learned along the way is the idea that “what you focus on grows.” At the time they worked horrible jobs with toxic people and constant negative thoughts swirling in their heads. Realizing that spending 8 hours per day in this situation was getting them nowhere, this gave them the courage to leave their jobs as soon as possible to devote more time to their brand. Making the business their priority, spending extra time on it and jumping into action led to incredible growth and success. Momentum is everything. It's obvious from this interview that Emma and Carla are full of energy and are super positive people. But, like all of us there can be times when they fall back into a negative space in moments of sadness, sensitivity or being overwhelmed. “It's okay that we do fall back, it's just how fast we come back to where want to be in our mindset that matters.” Yoga, meditation, walks outside or expressing gratitude are some of the ways that the sisters get out of this type of funk. The girls are big fans of practicing gratitude and say, “It's such a simple thing, but it's magical.” To grow their business from a simple idea to a strong brand, Emma and Carla have had to do many scary things; quitting their jobs, putting themselves out there, public speaking and writing their first cook book just to name a few. They know first-hand that as you do more, things become more normal to you and you don't realize how big and bold you're actually being. Speaking of putting yourself out there, One of the things I ask Emma about is her public relationship with fellow entrepreneur, Dan Norris. She shared that deciding to this was all part of putting forth her real, authentic self on social media. Some people put up a front and pretend to be somebody else on social media, but that's pretty hard to keep up. “Being you is so easy and way more fun.” Emma and Carla were so much fun to talk to and I'm thrilled that they've shared their brand and incredible relationship with the Bold Life Movement audience. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What did the evolution of their brand look like? How do the sisters bounce back when they're not feeling exceptionally positive or energetic? How do they decide what to share on social media? Is there such a thing as being too authentic? What were some of the big takeaways they've gotten from the guests on their podcast, MerryBiz? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: Why taking action trumps all. How the name of your brand might not be as important as some claim it is. How our thoughts attract and decide what we're going to do in the future. How training your brain through meditation and yoga can get you back to a positive mindset more quickly. I'm so excited to get the chance to catch up with Dan Norris in today's podcast. He's the kind of guy who knows how to get stuff done and this was a great interview as he shares with the audience how he attains much of his success. Dan started his online career through blogging. He's always been a content machine, but it wasn't until just a few years ago that he started writing great content that gained traction. This traction led to his first book, and perennial best seller, ‘The 7 Day Startup.' He's never been able to sit on content after it's created, so as he wrote the book over a handful of weeks, he would publish parts of it as whole articles on his blog to see what stuck with readers. When it comes to creating content, Dan doesn't have any kind of daily rituals to force him to churn it out. Instead, he writes in short bursts when he feels the inspiration to do so, and only on things that really interest him. (that's the key!) “It's quite easy to write a lot when you're actually really into it.” Of course the book turned out great, and with the aid of a community Facebook group, he was able to get the word out about it and elicit many great reviews. He now has two versions of popular 7-Day Startup membership groups; the free Facebook group, and a paid membership site where users get advanced support on their business and access to educational content. To help manage these groups, he depends on the support of his assistants. This is another process that Dan leverages to free up his time: utilizing low cost support to do the bulk of the necessary tasks that help with nurturing the group. Some of the things that his VAs handle within the group: Welcoming new members Posting the weekly topic to spark conversations Promoting the paid-group within the free group Drafting the weekly thread summary email weekly tasks that would otherwise take up too much of Dan's time Outsourcing is a cheap way to get really good people. He works with a small team in the Philippines where the cost of living is much cheaper, so the lower wage is actually quite good. Protip for outsourcing: For each task you hand off to your VA, Dan recommends creating a set of instructions using text, images and video detailing exactly how it should be done. There's some hand holding in the beginning, but repeat tasks get learned quickly and you'll eventually start saving yourself loads of time. Dan is definitely a doer, and a go getter and he embodies the boldness that is being the person that will put themselves out there while others sit back and watch. He believes, If you do this enough, you will get rewarded. He notes that for someone like him, the entrepreneurial life is naturally where he belongs. He felt out of place doing anything but, and he likes the freedom of being an entrepreneur and the rewards it brings. “The people who get rewarded are the people that just do the work” SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How did he reach such a large audience with his first book? Does Dan have a daily writing habit that helps him pump out the content? Can he explain the process of outsourcing to a VA in the Philippines? Has he transitioned to outsourcing his content creation? How did Activision (creators of Call of Duty) come to contact him to create the Black Hops beer? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How Dan gets away with not having a daily writing habit How his VA helps him with his valuable Instagram account The reason why you may want to use a personal brand to support and share your products Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Connect with Dan Norris: Website | Instagram | Twitter | Snapchat 7 Day Startup: Website | Facebook Delegate your Instagram Marketing Strategy for $30 per Week: Article Starters & Makers: Website | Facebook Black Hops Beer WP Curve ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: The Dynamite Circle: Website The Bold Life Movement Book: Facebook Group

I mean I'm super excited because someone I've been following from quite a long time, has been actually an inspiration to me in building Virtual Angel Hub and how to manage virtual teams, which is actually not as easy as people think, is our guest on the show today and that is Dan Norris, who is co-founder of WPCurve. And not only is Dan a very passionate entrepreneur with a huge obsession of content marketing and everything in digital, he's also running a big virtual team and with 30 people at the moment in Philippines and a co-founder who lives in the US, so truly global virtual teams. Dan welcome to the show, we're really excited to get chatting with you! Dan: Well I'm excited too, thank you for having me! Barbara: Yeah, it's good! So, just to kick off, do you want to give us quick background into how you ended up with such a big team of virtual staff? Where did it all start for you? Where it all started Dan: Right, so two years ago I just sent an email to my list and asked them if they wanted ongoing WordPress support and I made the offer of unlimited small fixes each month for $70 a month and at the time I had one developer in the Philippines, Andrew, who was a really, really good developer and he'd worked on a lot of stuff with me and I really didn't want to lose him. And actually the other thing I said was 24/7 too, so I had small jobs 24/7 and I only have one guy in the Philippines which is the same time zone as me and I had a bunch of people say yes to it and so I was like, doing it on my phone at night time. So I knew straightaway I was going to have to hire people. What ended up happening was I found a co-founder in the US to manage that side of the world, which made things a lot easier. And I'm also not a WordPress developer, so I was always going to hire people – it never would have worked without doing that,
