A self-confessed studio nerd, Georgia Barnes began her career drumming for Kwes, Kae Tempest and Micachu before signing with Domino records and releasing her self-titled debut album in 2015 to critical acclaim. She earned a Mercury nomination for her second album, Seeking Thrills, and has since gone on to collaborate with everyone from Years and Years' frontman Olly Alexander and Gorillaz to Shania Twain and Vampire Weekend. We joined the deeply down-to-earth, multi-talented musician for an intimate chat in her home studio. During the episode, Georgia shares the female music influences who've shaped her career from Kate Bush to Missy Elliott, waxes lyrical about the joys of analogue, explains how a 9-5 approach can be surprisingly conducive to creativity, and spills the T on how Shania Twain takes her tea, and that's not even the half of it!“I started out with an idea that I wanted to be this one thing. Over the years, I've had to let that go, and I've got so much I can offer in different areas”This episode is an audio goldmine of creative insights, personal reflections and industry anecdotes from the mind of an artist who eats, sleeps and breathes music. Play Episode Listen Later Nov 4, 2022 55:11

In a recent interview with Mixmag Asia about her debut EP 'Young Hate' and its just-released lead single 'Stonefruit', Sijya laid down the following as her artistic agenda: "It's a bit rebellious I'd say. I think it fights the notion that there are certain ‘correct' paths to reaching a certain level of knowledge or making." Carrying out that rebellion against the run-of-the-mill on the back of an intuition-led meticulousness, the New Delhi composer, producer and visual artist has begun to unveil her abstract take on art-pop and downtempo with the single release, which she marks for us with her Wild City mix.  The penchant for doing things differently pervades the curation and mixing as she uses the selections to celebrate Accidental Records, the home of her debut EP. Forgoing the commonplace approach of building things up gradually, the mix kicks off with a near-abrupt heavy rhythmic onslaught to firmly demand attention before finally clearing into captivating simplicity to provide a moment of sublime rhythmic relief with Dominic Voz's 'Right To The City I'. Sampled components of different tracks on the mix are re-arranged like a musical collage to manoeuvre through drastic dips and climbs of energy levels, as Sijya ventures into heavily distorted grounds and back while showcasing the uniqueness of her labelmates with works from the likes of Micachu, Crewdson, Mica Levi and ultimately, label-boss and British musical royalty, Matthew Herbert.  For more information and tracklist: https://www.thewildcity.com/mixes/19961-wild-city-217-sijya

Micachu & the Shapes are one of the funnest bands to watch perform. We trust you'll open up your imagination wide as you're listening to this great band fly through some tunes full of quirkiness and punch. Think of the incredible gestures they made while making these sounds. Maybe they are beating drums, ukulele and keys in a jumpy stomping jam or maybe they're floating far above the Earth dropping notes to the tops of trees below so that birds may form nests for their young to fly skyward and flap a wing hello back at Micachu. Or possibly these sounds are evoking images of a robotic roadrunner looping around a track as the audience stomps and mashes the floor with enthusiastic cheers of encouragement. Whatever your visions may involve we hope you enjoy this “sprout session” from one of our favorite bands.

Mica Levi, also known by her stage name Micachu, is a classically trained composer who came to the attention of the film world in 2014 with her debut score for Jonathan Glazer's Under The Skin.  Not only did Mica's work on her next film, Jackie, gain an Oscar nomination, but it also garnered vocal praise from none other than Ryuichi Sakamoto.  Now she's teamed up with Alejandro Landes for Monos, a deeply unsettling movie in which eight children with guns watch over a hostage and a cow on a faraway mountaintop.

The author Hari Kunzru discusses his new novel White Tears, about a pair of blues fans in New York who find themselves in very deep water, and the issues he now faces as a British Indian legal immigrant living in that city.Mica Levi's debut film score for Under The Skin was nominated for a Bafta. Her second film score for Jackie was nominated for an Oscar. And when this classically trained musician is not bringing her sonic talents to the big screen, she's the lead singer of an experimental pop band, Micachu and the Shapes . Currently touring a live performance of her Under The Skin soundtrack, Mica joins John Wilson to discuss why listening to her instincts are her best musical guide.Patrick Marber's Don Juan in Soho was a salacious and satirical swipe at the hypocrisies of society, and has now been revived a decade later with David Tennant as the hedonistic libertine. The writer and director guides us through the seedy, but increasingly sanitised, underbelly of modern London which inspired the play. As it is announced that the Turner Prize is to scrap the rule that eligible artists must be aged under 50, art writer Louisa Buck, who was a jurist for the prize in 2005 discusses the move and considers which artists might have won previously if the age limit had not been in place. Wild-haired rhythmical genius Seb Rochford, of jazz futurists Polar Bear, provides a heady juxtaposition of hip hop and shoegaze for the latest Clash DJ podcast. Polar Bear have been a continually experimental and innovative force in contemporary jazz, blending a punky ethos, electronica and rock riffing with traditional jazz ideas, frequently held together by Rochford’s incredible rhythms and dexterity. Starting off with some spacey ambience courtesy of fellow Polar Bear bandmate Leafcutter John, Youngs Teflon and Angel Gaze then verbally smack you around a bit before melting into the hazy tones of The Invisible. And so the cycle continues, with a blend of blissed-out instrumentals peppered with processed beats, Mozart and a dash of world music experimentation, before the relaxed rhyming of 2morrows Victory and Micachu’s ever-charming weirdness bring things to a close. Polar Bear play at Rich Mix, London, on December 15, where they will be performing material from their new album, scheduled for release next year. Seb Rochford tracklist 1. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

The Crapcast is so named because I am in one of the dingiest hotel rooms I have ever been in.  In isn't even entertainingly bad, which would be something, just like being dressed in clothes from Marks and Spencer and being trapped inside a grey cardboard box listening to Keane's greatest hits. Anyhow, the shower was really good, and I can forgive almost any other atrocity in a hotel room, as long as the shower is hot and the pressure is good. Anyhow, I am abandoning the Hotel of Beige for a friend's house tonight, and then tootling back up to Edinburgh tomorrow evening to see my nice lady again.  It makes a bit of change for me to be away on business instead of her, so I can go back and gloat about being a mover and a shaker… until she puts me firmly back in my place my reminding me that when she goes away it is to China and New York and Australia, not just a long weekend in London. And yes, I do refer to a bit of 'verbal writing' in this.  Don't judge me too harshly.  I was wrecked. 01. Billy Bragg - The Saturday Boy (00.56) 02. Pet Ghost Project - Glitch Shake (10.09) 03.
