#StarTrek #TheNextGeneration or #TNG season 1 episode 4 {From the Daily Star Trek News} “Code of Honor” places the crew of the Enterprise-D on the planet of Ligon II in an attempt to negotiate access to a specific vaccine. In the episode, the Ligonian people are depicted as quite humanoid-looking, but societally primitive. Wikipedia notes that in the original script of the episode, written by Katharyn Powers and Michael Baron, the Ligonians were called “Tellisians” and were a reptilian species. However, the script was changed several times before production, and eventually the director, Russ Mayberry, decided to cast only Black actors for the Ligonian roles, and gave the episode a “tribal Africa” theme. Mayberry was eventually fired from the production, and replaced by his assistant director Les Landau. “Code of Honor” has largely been condemned as racist and ranked among the worst Star Trek episodes of all time. Frakes brought attention to the episode during the virtual panel when a discussion of the series led him to ask if “Code of Honor” would be discussed. He referred to the episode as “The embarrassment heaped upon us in season one, mostly on Denise.” Somewhat incredulous, Crosby asked, “Can you imagine playing that right now, in this climate?”, likely referring to recent anti-racism protests. Crosby and Frakes, of course, aren't the only ones from Star Trek to criticize the episode over the years. Fellow actors #LeVarBurton, #MichaelDorn, #BrentSpiner and even staff writer #TracyTormé, among many others, have all shared their disdain for “Code of Honor”. Frakes also commented on the importance of the recent protests and expressed his support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement. He said, “It's really part of Roddenberry's vision that there be no racism and there'd be no sexism, and I'm very optimistic that the positive results of this worldwide awareness of how appalling people of color have been treated for centuries is the change. That there will be radical real change in people's hearts and in their minds and I'm very optimistic that when things settle down people will behave differently and there would be more honor and more respect. I'm not usually this serious but I really believe that this is the time, and long, long past.”

Wynn Rousuck, who visits each week with her reviews of Maryland's regional stage, joins Tom today to share her impressions of an unusual new production of Meredith Willson's 1957 classic, The Music Man, now on stage at the Olney Theater Center. What sets this production apart is that half of the musical's cast is deaf, and the other half hearing, and the presentation uses ASL (American Sign Language) and English supertitles along with conventional song and dialogue. It's complicated, but effective, Judy says. Starring acclaimed deaf actor James Caverly in the title role, the musical is co-directed by Michael Baron and Sandra Mae Frank, with music direction by Christopher Youstra and special "Artistic Sign Language" direction by Michelle Banks.The Music Man continues at Olney Theatre Center through July 24. Rinderpest – Sequence and Destroy Last week the UK’s Pirbright Institute announced that it had destroyed its remaining stocks of the deadly cattle virus Rinderpest. This repository was one of the biggest remaining stores of it since it was announced in 2011 that vaccines had eradicated it in the wild. Dr Michael Baron, amongst others, has been arguing for years that because we can now obtain a full sequence of such viruses, we no longer need to run the risk of such scientific samples ever being released, through accident or malice. As such, for Pirbright at least, the rinderpest virus that once killed millions of cattle and starved similar numbers of humans now only exists as a digital memory. Oi, You Singin' at My Bird? The delightful song of the European Robin is actually a fierce territorial warning between males that functions to avoid costly mismatched conflict. In fact, the complexity of the song seems to represent the fitness of the singer. Gareth Arnott of Queen’s University in Belfast talks about his investigation into whether noise – including anthropogenic noise interferes with this life-or-death conversation. It sounds like it does. Science as Entertainment All this week and next BBC2 is hosting a new programme called The Family Brain Games. The games are designed not to test merely general knowledge or conventional measures of IQ, but rather a functional, communicative sort of intelligence that competing families display amongst themselves as a team. The musical follows the few who have attempted (both successfully and unsuccessfully) to assassinate former US presidents. Today’s podcast "Mind of the Murder" focuses explores this musical's dark theme with actress Natalya Ferch, director Michael Baron, and campus counselor Lori Finley.
