Mike was impelled to serve by the examples of his veteran parents. West Point was not his first choice, but their strong cadet candidate program and luck resulted in his acceptance and attendance. Mike was the epitome of grit and threw himself at multiple challenges and opportunities while at the Academy. Mike fell short of some of those goals, but graduated as an Infantry officer with the skills and repetitions necessary to succeed at Officer Basic and Ranger school. Mike reported to the 3rd Infantry Division and caught their train up and deployment to the liberation of Iraq. Fate struck him and his platoon and he was separated from his team after tragedy. Mike served the remainder of that deployment on rear detachment separate from his platoon with scars forming on his psyche. The path to redemption has been long and hard fought. This is his story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/joe-harrison0/support

In this episode, Michael Gruber, SVP of Talent Acquisition at Compass Group, sits down with us to share a bit about his career and how he and his team have developed systems and processes that allow them to efficiently hire over 100,000 people every year. Michael got his start in HR during his time in the military, so it was a natural fit for him once he transitioned back into civilian life. After an interesting two decades, including joining a company in its first year and growing it to nearly 800 employees, he landed at Compass Group about three and a half years ago. Compass Group hires at high volumes — at any one time, the company has about 15,000 hourly jobs and nearly 1,000 professional jobs open. Michael shares how he and his team have implemented a technology stack to help them manage talent acquisition efficiently and give candidates a better experience. But, despite the necessary attention to technology, Michael reinforces the importance of relationships in recruiting. He closes with his thoughts on how TA teams should be building relationships to make their roles more effective. Wondering how to make technology work better for your TA team? Visit SagemarkHR.com. Miriam is a best-selling author of the book 'Woman in Wilderness'. She lives with her husband in the New Zealand wilderness, surviving in extreme conditions by hunting wild animals and foraging edible plants. Miriam Lancewood has given up all modern-day comforts to live life right on the edge and off-grid. Her book, now translated in many languages, is her story of living six years in the wilderness with her husband. In 2017, Miriam and Peter left New Zealand to explore other wild places. They walked 2000 km through the forest of Europe and along the coast of Turkey, mostly camping under trees and cooking by fire. It's a gripping story about life and death, courage and the power of love. In this podcast, we dive deeper into her life in isolation and wilderness. It's her untold story from a youth-olympian, travelling through Africa, India, South-east Asia and living in New Zealand as a nomad with her husband. Interestingly, we met at the Emirates Dubai Literature Festival in February 2020 and became good friends. Recommendations: Classical Clarinet Music by Jörg Widmann All books by Michael Gruber and J. Marc Novak graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 2018 and is now a practicing dentist between two practices in Northern New Jersey. He was born and raised in East Windsor, CT. With his mother and father both being successful teachers, he entered the University of Connecticut in the education program before transitioning his studies to biochemical research. After completing a research and development summer internship at a pharmaceutical company the summer before his senior year, he knew that a life stuck in a laboratory was not for him, and he chose to again transition to dentistry after observing his local dentist Dr. Pete Coombs of Suffield, CT. While applying to schools his undergraduate research advisor convinced him to continue his work and stay for a Master’s degree. His research project focused on increasing the chemical stability of proteins that could be used for functional purposes. He published several peer reviewed journal articles pertaining to the increased functional stability of Glucose Oxidase, acting as the building blocks to a biocompatible glucose sensor that has the potential to send electrical Bluetooth signals through an app to register live blood-glucose readings and limit the pain and annoyance of patient’s using drops of blood from their fingers. Upon completion of Dental school, he was selected to attend the highly competitive GPR program at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ, ranked the #1 hospital in New Jersey and a top 30 hospital in the United States. He received advanced training of complex dental cases, including oral surgery, endodontics, dental implants and esthetic cases. He received a formal education on management of medically compromised patients as well as patients with special health care needs. Becoming a more well-rounded and confident practitioner afforded him to opportunity to enter private practice as an associate under the tutelage of Dr. David Paulussen of Hackettstown, NJ and Dr. Michael Gruber of Parsippany, NJ both of whom are annually recognized as two of New Jersey’s top dentists. When not splitting his time between the two offices, Dr. Novak is passionate about continuing education to become the best practitioner possible as well as staying physically active and traveling. He hope to use his experiences to provide the best possible care to his patients in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and make patients an integral part of their own treatment by educating them to the fullest extent as to the care they will be receiving.

Danny Anderson is joined by Michial Farmer of the Christian Humanist Podcast and Michael Gruber (one of Farmer's former students!). On tap this week is an exploration of the phenomenon we call “Rock Star Face.” Why is it that rock stars, particularly male ones, feel the urge to pose for pictures with ridiculously self-serious looks on their stupid faces? Taking the abominable Don Henley as a test case, the trio trace this tendency through jazz, the 1960s, and Romanticism. Bashing the Eagles all along the way, of course.

Workers’ compensation is one area of law that’s constantly adapting to the society around it. Some of the changes it goes through are for the better, while others are challenged by both injured workers and the attorneys that represent them. In this episode of Workers Comp Matters, host Alan Pierce talks to Michael Gruber about the controversial changes to New York’s workers’ comp rules that were put into place earlier this year. They explain the budget changes that lead to the shift in impairment guidelines, the secrecy of the decision process, and the resulting backlash. They also discuss what national workers’ comp issues will likely draw the most attention in 2018 including marijuana, opioids, and immigration. Michael Gruber, a partner at Pasternack Tilker Ziegler Walsh Stanton & Romano, LLP, handles workers compensation cases for the firm. Special thanks to our sponsors, Casepacer and PInow.

Medical Treatment Guidelines are a list of procedures each state mandates to use when treating injured workers. The goal is for these guidelines to aid faster and better treatment for patients. The underlying issue is that they are crafted to cater to the general population based on trials and clinical tests, which allows for errors and variable factors. In this edition of Workers’ Comp Matters your host, Attorney Alan S. Pierce, invites Michael Gruber to discuss Medical Treatment Guidelines, how strict and effective the guidelines tend to be, and the risks of cost-shifting medical fees. Michael Gruber recently finished Medical Treatment Guidelines: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. He is a practicing attorney for Pasternack, Tilker, Ziegler, Walsh, Stanton, and Romano, LLP, where he handles workers compensation cases for the firm. In 2012, Mr. Gruber was named as the chairman of the Workers’ Compensation Committee of the Brooklyn Bar Association and he is a member of numerous workers’-compensation-centered organizations.

Caroline hosts Michael Gruber, author of (many books) “Night of the Jaguar,” super-pertinent to us all now, as animistic forces of Intelligence rise up, within and without, to protect the world from the rapacious ravagings of sociopathic dementors – to whom we have out-sourced leadership. Until Now! “Moie knew that the world was ruled by ‘ryuxit”, the harmony of the different children of Jaguar, tree rock snake fish bird all together with humans.  What was not ‘ryuxit' was ‘siwix,' those things that were disharmonious.”  And one did not love the disharmonious.  But according to a friend, one “could love ‘siwix', and by loving it, change it into ‘ryuxit', and not only that, but a better ‘ryuxit' than had been before.”…”Moie would certainly have dismissed all of this as dead people's (white people's) nonsense, if he had not visited his friend's spirit in a dream.  There he found not the shriveled sad soul characteristic of the ‘waichuranan' (white people), but something immense and powerful, ‘ryuxit' beyond ‘ryuxit.' www.MichaelGruberBooks.com The post The Visionary Activist – Winter Solstice – Diving into the Dark appeared first on KPFA.
