Michael Leonhart is a New York-based trumpeter, composer, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who has carved a niche for himself, leading his multi-piece Michael Leonhart Orchestra. On Sunnyside Records, Michael's new release, titled “The Normyn Suites” is a requiem and celebration, inspired by the life and death of the bandleader's 15-year-old dog, a female mini dachshund named Normyn. In keeping with the MLO's eclectic musical palette, the album features several collaborations with Elvis Costello, with contributions by Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Nels Cline, and JSWISS as well as two bonus offerings with Donny McCaslin.   It's a beautiful backstory of love and loss that in these times speaks personally - and universally.

Leon Michels grew up in New York, picking up the Saxophone while he was in high school. His teachers introduced him to early jazz from artists such as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. It was his encounter with the musicians that would go on to form "Budos Band" that introduced him to the world of deep funk and afrobeat, and from there Leon would go on to experiment with his own recordings, initially on a multitrack reel-to-reel recorder a friend had gifted him, and eventually to putting out his own music under the "El Michels Affair" moniker.Leon's career has also seen him work on projects for high profile artists such as "Lana Del Rey" and being sampled by producers working with "Beyonce".On this episode Jay and Jesse dive deeper into Leon's back catalogue as well as his approach and workflow to making music."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.   Bobby Carter | October 26, 2021 Decked in a hoodie, cargo pants and coveted sneakers, a slimmed-down and clean-shaven Ed Sheeran stands surrounded by bookshelves and a host of world-class musicians. He's flanked by music director to the stars, Adam Blackstone, who assembled the band and handled bass guitar duties.   After opening this Tiny Desk (home) concert with his latest single, “Shivers,” Sheeran introduces himself and proceeds with more hits, new tunes, and a surprise throwback. The English singer-songwriter may appear acclimated to a live band, but it's a pretty rare occasion. For more than a decade, Sheeran's become revered for ripping down stadiums, but usually (and remarkably) it's just him, a guitar and loop pedals. The material released so far from his upcoming album, = (out Oct. 29), leans heavily into the '80s pop sphere and provides glimpses into Sheeran's personal life during his time away. Here, he debuts “Overpass Graffiti,” an uptempo ode to the endurance of long love. “Visiting Hours” is a heartfelt dedication to his close friend and mentor, Australian record executive Michael Gudinski, who passed away in March. Although most of the setlist honors =, Sheeran veers momentarily to take us to church with 2014's “Make It Rain” from the TV show Sons of Anarchy. The choir only takes up a smidgen of physical real estate, but their voices manage to engulf the entire space, propelling the song to another stratosphere. He closes the performance with a quiet storm version of his summer single “Bad Habits.” SET LIST * “Shivers” * “Make It Rain” * “Overpass Graffiti” * “Visiting Hours” * “Bad Habits” MUSICIANS * Adam Blackstone: musical director/bass * Terence Vaughn: keys * Tim Stewart: guitar * Clay Sears: guitar * Brian Frasier-Moore: drums * Rayfield Holloman: pedal steel guitar * Whitney Smith: vocals * Raphael Smith: vocals * Melissa Best: vocals * Antia Coach: vocals * Melany Watson: vocals * Kyron Elcock: vocals * Raymond Mason: trombone * Michael Leonhart: trumpet * Sam Greenfield: saxophone CREDITS * Video: Chadrick Fellers, Jeremy Ivory-Chambers, Porous Porousfreak * Audio: Tyrell Ace Clark, James Hardy-Martin, Douglas Touré Harris   TINY DESK TEAM * Producer: Bobby Carter * Video Producer: Kara Frame * Audio Mastering: Josh Rogosin * Tiny Production Team: Bob Boilen, Bobby Carter, Maia Stern, Sofie Hernandez-Simeonidis * Executive Producer: Keith Jenkins * Senior VP, Programming: Anya Grundmann #tinydesk #nprmusic #edsheeran Team UNPLUGGED.

Certain musicians like to do one thing over and over again. Others, like Elvis Costello, keep reinventing themselves or, at the very least, like to experiment with the many sides of the musical talent they were born with. Looking back at Costello's career it seems like his sense of adventurous restlenesses has been both the cause and the effect of his many high-profile collaborations, including those in the jazz world - from Michael Leonhart to Roy Nathanson, from the Mingus legacy project to the New Orleans connections, and more - that we explore here. Elvis Costello’s new album, Hey Clockface, veers through all kinds of musical territory: melancholy ballads, spoken word soundscapes, abrasive rockenroll, and songs with an old time jazz flavor. While most of the songs were written in Helsinki and Paris before the Covid-19 lockdown, Costello also collaborated from a distance with New York trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader Michael Leonhart on some of the songs, as he provided words and vocals over music for Michael Leonhart's new material, like "Shut Him Down."  For this Soundcheck Podcast, the two discuss their ongoing and wide-ranging collaboration and how the spoken word pieces on the Hey Clockface bring in guitarists Bill Frisell and Nels Cline, with Leonhart evoking Aaron Copland trumpet riffs as part of a soundscape. There’s mention of using the Partch instruments, New Orleans swing, big band horn arrangements that are in a Fela Kuti vein, working with rapper JSWISS, and learning to be more daring while being prepared to feel foolish. Costello and Leonhart remind us that there’s joy in the making of music - even the sad stuff. Some of the music within the conversation (Mostly from Hey Clockface):

The end of the year is the time when we usually look back and take stock. To celebrate the continuous growth and expansion of the music we love, rather than compiling yet another "best of 2018 playlist" we have decided to look back at the music that, for a reason or another, has surprised us the most this year. It features mostly young musicians, artists we were not familiar with, unexpected reissues or new projects by players we have loved for a long time. The playlist features Michael Leonhart, Rachelle Garniez, Reinier Baas Ben van Gelder & Metropole Orkest, Mopo, Dairo Miyamoto, Ben Lamar Gay, Walking Distance, Dexter Gordon, Anais Drago, Camilla Battaglia, Little Rosies Kindergarten, Sketchbook Quartet, Otis Sandsjo, Maistah Aphrica, SLUGish Ensemble, Yellow Bird, Pipe Dream, Rosa Brunello. Since 1992, Don Breithaupt has steered his band Monkey House on a path of musical progress. In 2012 when we first connected with Don, the band had just released their third album “Headquarters,” which caught the attention of all us here at Inside MusiCast – most notably how their songs contained a heavy melodic approach reminiscent of Steely Dan. The band’s latest album “Left,” which will be released on June 3, picks up where “Headquarters” left off and includes contributions from some incredibly talented guest musicians, including Elliott Randall, Drew Zingg, Michael Leonhart, Jay Graydon. Kim Mitchell, and Lucy Woodward. “Left” contains brilliantly crafted songs that may be the band’s finest collection to date. In fact, during our chat with Don today, you’ll hear the world premiere of a few songs from the album. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome Don Breithaupt.

Tune in for a brand new episode of Snacky Tunes as Darin Bresnitz is in conversation with Courtney Nichols, co-founder of Disco Dining Club. Disco Dining Club is a bi-monthly culinary excursion steeped in all the excess, debauchery & hedonism of disco. It is the intent of Disco Dining Club to take the warehouse scene out of the underground and into the dining room that asks but one thing of guests: to consume everything. In the second half of the show, Greg Bresnitz is in studio with Miwi La Lupa. Michael Leonhart is a multi instrumentalist, arranger, producer and composer. He's also from a musical family - both of his parents are jazz musicians, as is his sister. However, his interests and his music are diverse and eclectic. Here, he talks about growing up in New York, his early development as a trumpet player - including some of the physical limitations he dealt with along the way, and some of his most notable projects (like co-producing Donald Fagen's most recent album).

Growing-up in New York City in a musical environment that included a father that was a professional bassist, along with a mother and sister who made careers as vocalists, Michael Leonhart seemed destined to find his own path into the world music. Having studied a variety of instruments as a young child, Michael turned his attention to the trumpet when he was ten years old – and never looked back. At only 38 years old, Michael has already established himself a first call studio and touring musician, producer and solo artist. Having performed with countless artists, including Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Yoko Ono, David Byrne, James Brown, Ringo Starr, Eric Claption, Levon Helm, Phish, Steve Winwood, and so many others, not to mention what has turned out to be a sixteen year career with Steely Dan and Donald Fagen, it’s a wonder how he’s managed to produce seven stellar solo projects. And top it off, he recently co-produced Donald Fagen’s “Sunken Condos.” Inside MusiCast is please to welcome Michael Leonhart.
