Format changes are back on the menu, and this time, it's Tibalt's Trickery and Memory Lapse being put on ice. Where does this leave Historic now? Meanwhile, Worlds has come and gone, and a new champion has been crowned. Did he bring a new metagame along with him? All this, and all kinds of other strange things on this week's Arena Decklists! We had finished playing a game, and were talking about group hug decks. He told me they were secretly control decks. This intrigued me at the time, but I have always pretty much hated group hug type cards, because the net effect is negative (howling mine example). Sidenote: This is the kinda stuff we are always thanking the patrons for, and it really means something to me. I just wanted to thank the following patrons for kinda nudging me in the right direction for this deck: Micah the Lunarch (He suggested Zurzoth) Dustin Ivy Joshua Swope “I think you could help your opponents have more meaningful attacks with Bedlam” This was hilarious, but also caused me to really think about Group Hug in a different way. Lenny Wooley-Broder Fast-forward a couple months: I've got the itch to build a deck, and I'm trying to decide between mono-red group hug or Codie, and the mono-red deck, and some patrons are intrigued by the idea of mono-red group hug. https://scryfall.com/@greenegeek/decks/ebad07a7-bd53-4217-a75e-6e0b32f742c8 So, I decided it would be an interesting thought experiment to just make a list of ALL of the group-hug type effects that were available to mono-red (This is where I started to get REALLY excited about the deck). I made a scryfall list, and found over 120 cards! I decided I had to embrace “group hug”, even though it was out of my comfort zone. This is something I often try to do when I play mono-red. I actually wanted to just turbo-charge my opponents (and also hope I'd be seen as less of a threat, as I'm playing a fairly unpopular commander with 499 decks on Edhrec.com) https://www.moxfield.com/decks/60JC220d5k-EEI6RT0Nbxg Victory Chimes Spectral Searchlight Cursed Mirror Rainbow Vale (I ended up not purchasing this) Field of Ruin Who needs a mana? (Ramp) Mana Flare Howling Mine Soldevi Sentry Agitator Ant Helm of Awakening (This card really speeds games up!) Boldwyr Heavyweights Hired Giant Mana Cache Wild Evocation Hey, who turned out the lights? Goblin Spymaster Generous Gifts Brash Taunter Grab the Reins Emberwilde Captain Bloodthirsty Blade Fork Adamaro, First to Desire (Sad that Anvil of Bogardan is on the reserved list) Judo Comet Storm Purphoros, God of the Forge Impact Tremors Jaya's Immolating Inferno (4 legendary creatures aside from Zurzoth) Vicious Shadows We're all drawing a bunch of cards, now what? Kaldheim Season, Episode 10: Analyzing the Feb. 15 B&R Update Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is very hard to kill. You can try to fight Uro with this strategy or that one, but the card just keeps coming at you, in format after format. Natural metagame forces were powerless in the face of Uro's F.I.R.E. design friends. In the end, Wizards took a page from Sigourney Weaver and did they only thing they could: You have to nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.Brewer extraordinaire Arun Singh joins the cast this week to help us make sense of the biggest B&R announcement in Magic history. Five cards were banned in Modern, including a beloved monkey, and the Cascade mechanic was altered to end the brief but terrifying reign of Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor. Five cards were also banned in Pioneer, sending shockwaves through a metagame that now seems completely wide open. Did WOTC go too far with these bannings, or have they perhaps not gone far enough? And what does this all mean for the formats we so know and love? "Vehicles: Rails Were Meant to be Broken (ft. Tibalt, Cosmic Imposter was not banned... Technically. We talk about everyone else who WAS banned, and how you will see less Tibalt anyway.
Well, those were some bans. And we're here to talk about them, with our regular guest host Evart Moughon, aka Aspiringspike. We first discuss the big bans in Modern, Pioneer, and Historic, then head into the Dive Down to talk about what these changes mean for the formats themselves. Kaldheim Season, Episode 9: Birgi, God of Storytelling // Harnfel, Horn of BountyWhen evaluating new cards, a quick hack is to look for anything that cheats on mana. These are the cards that can really do something special. Cheating out a 7 mana Tibalt? Yep, that tracks. Fistfuls of Treasure off Magda? Sign us up.This week continues that trend. Birgi, God of Storytelling is a cost reducer dialed up to 11. Her front face resembles Baral, Chief of Compliance or Goblin Electromancer: mana engines that scale the more spells you cast. But Birgi is even more generous. Cards that cost 1 are completely free, and cards that cost zero actually send up you mana. Mishra’s Bauble becomes a ritual; Mox Amber becomes Seething Song.Once you have this much mana, all you’re looking for is a source of cards. Birgi makes this easy as you please: just flip the card over and you have Harnfel, Horn of Bounty, a multi-use Magmatic Channeler that trades each card in your hand for two fresh ones. Standard players learned to fear the pairing of Runaway Steam-Kin and Experimental Frenzy; Birgi gives you both effects on the same card. All told, Birgi is shockingly open-ended, capable of supporting existing engine decks or perhaps spawning new archetypes all her own. This week's a funny one. We set out to test some of the most recent winning decks featuring Kaldheim cards, in order to grade them on our (patent-pending) S/B/H rating system. Then, in the span of a few days, the Modern landscape shifted under our feet! So we'll still talk about those winning decks, but also about the communities iteration on Cascade Tibalt, what this means for Modern, and, as always, provide some mildly spicy takes. Are you sick of cascading into spells that cost less than your cascade card? What if I told you, with one simple trick, you could be cascading into a seven drop and winning games of modern on turn two? You'd say that sounds like it would ruin the modern format. Well. Hmm. Ok, I don't really have a good response to that. Thanks as always to Wave Sunray for our music!
Now that the metagame has had time to evolve, it appears that Tibalt, Cosmic Imposter is the clear best thing to be doing in the format. What innovations have been made? Kaldheim Season, Episode 7: Picks of the Week // Flashback: Valki and Alrund We'll let you in on a little secret: Tibalt's Trickery is just noise. A deck with this much meme potential was undoubtedly going to be the darling of Streamer Town on Week 1, but highlight reel screenshots do not result in actual tournament wins. Yes, the Trickery decks are more robust than expected, but their structural weaknesses leave them vulnerable to being easily hated out.Valki, on the other hand... now there is a real villain. Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor may be overcosted at 7 mana, but at 3 mana he is straight busted. Our testing this week sent us deep down the rabbit hole, starting with all-in versions that aimed for nothing less than Turn 1 Tibalt, and morphing to more hybrid builds capable of playing a longer game. As the week progressed, it became clear that Modern is going to be ruled by the Cascade mechanic, with Tibalt at the helm. That means that Force of Negation and Teferi, Time Raveler are absolute powerhouses. And you know what card pitches to Force? Ardent Plea. Our Flashback segment this week chronicles Dan's wild journey through Cascade Tibalt, culminating in a teched out Counter-Tibalt build that he rode to a 28-7 league record (80% win rate) and ultimately to a Top 8 finish in the Modern Challenge. Kaldheim is here, and we spend the first part of the show going over our impressions of the set. Spoiler it's all about Goldspan Dragon. We take a look at a few decks that might make splash in Standard, and surprise, surprise: Tibalt's Trickery has combo potential. We also give our impressions on Kentucky Route Zero and Watchdogs: Legion. Thank you for your honor.
Brew Session: Valki, God of Lies // Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor Valki, God of Lies is a lot worse than you think. Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor is also worse than it looks. And yet, with their powers combined, they just might be something special in Modern. This is not just a story about the power of having options. No, we're talking about outright shenanigans: the weird interaction of MDFCs with free effects like cascade, Bring to Light, Tibalt's Trickery, and even Spell Queller provide a bevy of options for landing Tibalt way ahead of schedule. But what happens after that? Does a turn 1 Tibalt actually convert to a win, or is that just another one of Valki's lies? Kaldheim gods are just as metal as promised. Today we're looking at the two-faced god of lies who is none other than Tibalt himself! Overthinking MTG is a podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for at least 10 minutes. Often, though, he ends up yammering about whatever's on the top of his mind that the card reminds him of and a half hours passes and it turns out all he's done is share his thoughts on recent news related to Commander, Magic: the Gathering Arena, Modern, Pioneer, Standard, or humorous anecdotes from his kitchen table jank days. For only the third time ever, Kenny and Amber battled head to head in combat through the medium of Magic the Gathering and you’ll never guess who came out on top (not really spoilers but it was Kenny duh of course). After we recap some thrilling cubic action, Amber weaves the twisting, sordid tale of pretty much the most hated character in Magic’s history, Tibalt the Devilmans. She tells us why he’s dumb, and why that makes him kind of sweet, actually. And then, ON A WHIM, we try our hand at designing a better version of the world’s stinkiest planeswalker. For 25,000 years, Nicol Bolas has plotted to claim true omnipotence, and it feels like we’ve been waiting for spoiler season for just as long. This is episode 14 of the MTG-Profits podcast. We check out Chandra this week, talk about Hasbro, and continue our guild review with Rakdos!
Please give us a review on Apple Podcasts & iTunes! This is part 4 of our 5 part series on WUBRG. In this episode, we’re talking about Magic’s spiciest flavor of mana, Red. Commentator and streamer TJ Rogers joins us to talk about his favorite color, and why he loves Tibalt. Level 2 Judge, and Card Kindgom’s pricing expert, Kris Ferderer talks about why Red is the color of his youth playing Magic. And the legendary Patrick Sullivan give us his thoughts on Red from a game design perspective. Just like the chaotic nature of Red, this episode jumps around, so you’ll want to listen to every second of it. See what I did there? I hope you enjoy my conversations with TJ Rogers, Kris Ferderer, and Patrick Sullivan on the color Red.
