Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024  A new grant initiative provides opportunities for Appalachian communities in West Virginia…three West Virginia Schools receive National Blue Ribbon status…and WVU helps develop a commercial property listing search to encourage development on former mine lands…on today's daily304. #1 – From ARC.GOV –  Appalachia's regional economic growth relies on local ability to prioritize challenges and implement solutions. However, capacity is often lacking at the individual, organizational, or community levels to do so. READY Grants to Grow is a $9 million funding opportunity that will award grants of up to $500,000 to organizations seeking to build individual, organizational and/or community capacity across the region. Any organization that is eligible to apply for an ARC grant can apply for READY Grants to Grow. Interested applicants are invited to register for a pre-application webinar set for Thursday, Oct. 10. Learn more: https://www.arc.gov/ready/grants-to-grow/    #2 – From WOWK-TV – The U.S. Department of Education has recognized three West Virginia schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Gilmore Elementary in Jackson County, Kellogg Elementary in Wayne County and Pleasant Valley Elementary in Marion County were among 356 schools across the nation to receive the prestigious award this year. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is one of the U.S. Department of Education's longest-running recognition programs. NBRS recognizes outstanding public and non-public elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall high academic achievement or success in closing the achievement gap among diverse groups of students. Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/west-virginia/whats-a-national-blue-ribbon-school-these-west-virginia-schools-just-won-the-honor/   #3 – From WTRF-TV – Just as Zillow helps home buyers find houses for sale, commercial real estate developers will soon be able to find the ideal property in West Virginia's southern coalfields using a similar land search system developed at West Virginia University. Researchers say they have designed the platform to encourage development opportunities, like clean energy and recreation, on former mine lands. To repurpose these lands and create new jobs, WVU will collaborate with Coalfield Development Corporation and The Nature Conservancy. The system is part of a comprehensive project called “Appalachian Climate Technology Now,” which received funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration as part of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge Grant. Users will be able to filter their searches to find land that would suit their needs, whether they are looking to build a solar farm or raise carbon capture biomass crops, for example. During the project's second year, the WVU team aims to refine the search tool to provide users with a timeframe for sustainable development. At present, 16 sites have been identified. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for October 11, 2023.☔ Rain appears likely for much of Wednesday. Although the National Weather Service has a chance of showers in the morning, the chance for rain in the Cedar Rapids area appears to take a big leap higher after 1 p.m. and then becomes even more likely in the evening. Rain looks like it will possibly continue into Thursday. The high temperature will settle in around 58 degrees. Bondholder Preston Hollow Community Capital has outbid the University of Iowa for Mercy Iowa City's assets as part of the hospital's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case.News of the auction results was made public Tuesday evening in a bankruptcy court filing. In an associated news release, Preston Hollow reported plans to partner with American Health Care Systems to operate a new community hospital — free and clear of the debt, pension liabilities, unpaid dues, and uncured contracts the Mercy operation had accrued over years of financial decline.Although it shared no details of a new hospital concept, Preston Hollow — as an investment firm — likely would leave the health care piece of the operation to American Health Care Systems, a Glendale, Calif.-based for-profit organization with health care management expertise.Preston Hollow was able to outmaneuver the University of Iowa for the winning bid by drawing out the auction process with negotiations, and using the $63 million that Mercy owes them as part of a “credit bid” that the University of Iowa was unable to match. The turn of events was a surprise to administrators from both Mercy and the university, who had already started contacting each other about the transition process to UI ownership in the past few weeks.Iowa Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst met in person Tuesday with top Israeli leaders, four days after the Iran-backed Hamas militant group launched a surprise assault on Israel from Gaza.Ernst last week led a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers, including Iowa GOP U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, of Ottumwa, to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan and Israel to support peace in the region and deter Iranian aggression. The group left on its envoy before the attack over the weekend.Tuesday, Ernst met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders, as well as American civilians in Israel, as that country bombarded Gaza in response.Ernst emphasized that the United State fully stands behind Israel in their efforts to eliminate Hamas. The purpose of the delegation's visit was originally to encourage peaceful relations between the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia. This was complicated by Saudi Arabia, along with many other Arab countries, publicly supporting Palestine as Gaza is under siege by Israeli forces.Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville, which is a part of the Iowa City Community School District, was one of five schools in Iowa named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.Schools are recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools for demonstrating effective and innovative teaching and learning, and how teachers and staff are valued and supported through meaningful professional learning, according to a news release from National Blue Ribbon Schools.Borlaug Elementary is recognized as an Exemplary High-Performing School for being among Iowa's highest performing schools as measured by state assessments.

Quotes: "Leadership is not always a loud activity but sometimes is has to be.” "Get in there, do the work, let your actions do the talking.” “I do the very best I can, I mean to keep going. If the end brings me out all right, then what is said against me won't matter. If I'm wrong, ten angels swearing I was right won't make a difference.” "If the end brings me out all right, what is said against me won't amount to anything.” ― Abraham Lincoln Sources of Inspiration: Judge Frank Johnson https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Minis_Johnson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Minis_Johnson) Colin Powell https://www.amazon.com/Colin-Powell-Books/s?k=Colin+Powell&rh=n%3A283155 (https://www.amazon.com/Colin-Powell-Books/s?k=Colin+Powell&rh=n%3A283155) John Maxwell https://www.amazon.com/John-C.-Maxwell/e/B001H6NROC%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share (https://www.amazon.com/John-C.-Maxwell/e/B001H6NROC%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share) ------------ Apply to be on the show: https://www.benfanning.com/the-ceo-sessions/ (https://www.benfanning.com/the-ceo-sessions/) Connect with Ben: https://www.linkedin.com/in/benfanning/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/benfanning/) https://www.instagram.com/benfanning1/ (https://www.instagram.com/benfanning1/) https://twitter.com/BenFanning1 (https://twitter.com/BenFanning1) https://www.facebook.com/benfanning (https://www.facebook.com/benfanning)
