She is the first woman to serve as superintendent of education in the district's 133 years of educating the children of Laurel. Since serving as the superintendent, the district has seen digital upgrades in all areas of operation, increased recruitment leading to the employment of high caliber applicants in the areas of teaching and administration, the district's six schools saw gains on state test scores with one school achieving the district's first A rating and maintaining that rating for five consecutive years, leading to being named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School. Bondholder Preston Hollow Community Capital has outbid the University of Iowa for Mercy Iowa City's assets as part of the hospital's Chapter 11 bankruptcy case.News of the auction results was made public Tuesday evening in a bankruptcy court filing. In an associated news release, Preston Hollow reported plans to partner with American Health Care Systems to operate a new community hospital — free and clear of the debt, pension liabilities, unpaid dues, and uncured contracts the Mercy operation had accrued over years of financial decline.Although it shared no details of a new hospital concept, Preston Hollow — as an investment firm — likely would leave the health care piece of the operation to American Health Care Systems, a Glendale, Calif.-based for-profit organization with health care management expertise.Preston Hollow was able to outmaneuver the University of Iowa for the winning bid by drawing out the auction process with negotiations, and using the $63 million that Mercy owes them as part of a “credit bid” that the University of Iowa was unable to match. The turn of events was a surprise to administrators from both Mercy and the university, who had already started contacting each other about the transition process to UI ownership in the past few weeks.Iowa Republican U.S. Sen. The group left on its envoy before the attack over the weekend.Tuesday, Ernst met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders, as well as American civilians in Israel, as that country bombarded Gaza in response.Ernst emphasized that the United State fully stands behind Israel in their efforts to eliminate Hamas. The purpose of the delegation's visit was originally to encourage peaceful relations between the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia. This was complicated by Saudi Arabia, along with many other Arab countries, publicly supporting Palestine as Gaza is under siege by Israeli forces.Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville, which is a part of the Iowa City Community School District, was one of five schools in Iowa named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.Schools are recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools for demonstrating effective and innovative teaching and learning, and how teachers and staff are valued and supported through meaningful professional learning, according to a news release from National Blue Ribbon Schools.Borlaug Elementary is recognized as an Exemplary High-Performing School for being among Iowa's highest performing schools as measured by state assessments.

In this podcast episode I sit down with Dr. Lori Desautels and I love what she said, “Behavior management is about adult behavior. It's not about kids. Our brains and bodies hold the state of our nervous systems, and it takes a steady adult to settle a child or adolescent.” I was hanging on her every word that she spoke at Delaware's Trauma Awareness Conference last month. She was the keynote speaker and I attended her breakout session. I'm planning to read her books and have been following her on YouTube and tiktok. We ALL need to take care of our mental health. Tina Hallock and Serena Ward are on a mission to normalize the conversation around mental health. Mental health is a critical aspect of our overall well-being and should be given attention for several reasons. Our home is where we spend a significant amount of our time, and it can have a considerable impact on our mental health. Creating a supportive and nurturing environment at home can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote positive mental health. Tina, although trained as a teacher, has held many odd jobs as she and her family have traipsed across the US. No job has taught her more in the last 26 years than being a mama to her children. She is a dog lover, a knitter and crusader to normalize mental health. While Serena has worked in a variety of different roles over the years, the one that she is most proud of is that of mama to three beautiful girls. All other credentials aside, it is the experience of knowing what it's like to have a child who struggles, that she brings to her work as a Mental Health Mama. In addition, she is a believer in the goodness of humanity and a champion of hope. Mental Health Mamas Tina and Serena with Dr. Karin Jakubowski discuss how family members and loved ones can play a crucial role in supporting each other's mental health. By fostering open communication, empathy, and understanding at home, we can create a safe and supportive space where we can share our thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or stigma. We talk to Dr. McMillan about the importance of staying student centered and how based on student voice, they have modified a period each day to create space for student choice. He shares about the impact that asking for input from students and staff can have on in building culture, and gives practical ways that they intentionally invest in staff culture at Chapman. Growing up in a home with parents who were educators, Dr. Andrew McMillan knew education was in his blood. Identifying education as his career path in third grade, Dr. McMillan is now an accomplished educator with seventeen years of experience including ten years of administrative experience in grades K-12. Known as a well-respected and collaborative team member, Dr. McMillan has a reputation for promoting fairness, integrity, and honesty, while maintaining a strong work ethic to motivate faculty, staff, and students to achieve their maximum potential within an ever-changing education environment. Dr. McMillan's core values are simple: love kids, be professional, and lead a school the community is proud of. Within those core values, Dr. McMillan fosters an environment at Chapman High School that supports the Profile of the SC Graduate, preparing students for life after high school in what he calls the 4 E's: serving their community as an Entrepreneur, Enrolled in a two or four year college or technical program, Enlisted in military service, or graduating as an Employable adult in a competitive, 21st century global economy. Named an Emerging Leader by the SCASCD, Dr. McMillan was also selected as the 2019 Outstanding Principal of the Year by the South Carolina Art Education Association. A firm believer in the importance of academics, arts, and athletics, Dr. McMillan currently serves as the South Carolina High School League Class AAA President. Additionally, under his leadership, Chapman High School was named a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School, recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School.
