“Every entrepreneur sees that in trial, there's treasure.” - Dean Minuto Host Laurie Barkman interviews Dean Minuto, President of YESCALATE. Dean shares his insights on entrepreneurship and the development of crucial skills necessary for success. The discussion emphasizes the importance of asking the right questions to learn in business and Dean elaborates on building muscle in entrepreneurship through learning and community. He also shares personal experiences that shaped his entrepreneurial journey, advocating for transformational relationships in business and life. Takeaways: Frequently ask important questions like "What works?", "Why does it work?", and "How can I apply it to my situation?" to guide your learning and actions. Emphasize the importance of being curious and having a test-and-learn mindset. This involves continuously seeking knowledge, adapting, and improving. Treat necessary skills like selling, presenting, or cold-calling as muscles that need regular exercise. Dedicate time to practice and improve these skills consistently. Constantly work on self-improvement, whether it's through reading, attending workshops, or other educational opportunities. Personal growth often translates to business growth. Soft skills have got a bad reputation. It's a term that we've all heard, but many of us struggle to define exactly what it means. Or maybe we can define it, but we don't consider it to be as important as ‘being able to get the job done'. Well, in this episode of the Oh For Food's Sake podcast, we're here to say that SOFT SKILLS MATTER! So much so that we prefer to call them ‘success skills'! Join us to find out what we mean when we talk about soft skills, why they're really important and what you can do to develop them yourself. In an age where AI is coming on in leaps and bounds every year, we're all seeing rapid shifts in the technical side of our jobs. But you know what AI can't do yet? It can't have a tricky conversation with a colleague about a missed deadline. It can't help your client to trust you that you'll deliver a project to the exact specification. These are all soft skills and they matter hugely. Today, we recap what soft skills are and go over four reasons why they can make all the difference in your career trajectory. Then we suggest a few resources that you can use to work on your own soft skills and how you can measure the impact of soft skills on your business. If you're just like us and are frustrated that soft skills don't get the recognition that they deserve, help us out by following and rating the Oh For Food's Sake podcast. This really boosts our mission to demonstrate the importance of soft skills throughout the UK food industry. Thank you!! Timestamps[0:40] Hello! PODCAST UPDATE ... Welcome to the latest episode from #notjustmakingtheteaDiscussing the realities of our career and life choices made. Celebrating the parts that haven't gone to plan as much as those which have !Communication Basics.Underlying all forms of communication is the relationship between sender and receiver. The communication process is relatively simple, first the sender decides on the feeling, thought or need they wish to send to the receiver. They will then decide on how they will send the message, this maybe via speech, non-verbal communication such as body language or tone of voice, or by written language. They then they use this to communicate with the receiver who will need to decode the senders' message if they are to understand it. However, the sender may be unclear on the message they want to transmit to the receiver, which could result in a misunderstanding.

Listen to episode 404 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Developing the Power of Memory for Success. Edited and adapted from Secrets of Mental Supremacy by W. R. C. Latson. Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: THE value of any person to themselves and to the world at large depends in great degree upon their memory — upon your ability to recall and to use at any desired moment the recollection of what you have seen, heard, experienced, or thought. Memory is really the stock in trade of our mental life. Our perceptions bring to us a vast mass of experiences — things that we have seen, heard, touched, tasted, and smelled — our thoughts and experiences. But these things are valuable only when they are held in the memory. For, unless they are remembered they cannot be used. Most of us have forgotten much more than we remember. We have studied at school, at college, at home. We have read many, many books. We have had any number of interesting and instructive conversations. We have, some of us, traveled and seen many rare and curious things. And of it all, how much is in our possession at the moment — how much is at our ready command? Not one tenth — probably not one hundredth. Imagine the enormous loss to us. Imagine the waste of time and effort. Imagine what it would mean to you or to me if, instead of possessing a memory which preserved for us only one hundredth of our experiences, we could remember and apply at will one half, three quarters, four fifths of what we have been through. Ryan Serhant is most widely known for being the star of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing New York” and the upcoming show “Sell it Like Serhant.” However, Ryan also has some real chops when it comes to residential real estate. He leads the top team at Nest Seekers International, where they have been ranked one of Wall Street Journal’s top 5 sales teams nationwide for the past 3 years. I asked Ryan to be a guest on Behind the Bricks (BTB) because in many ways the NYC residential market influences things to come in the multifamily investment space. When you think of condo sales prices, land values, and where people are choosing to buy and rent, these trends all have big implications for multifamily investors. As we begin 2018, his perspective on the market can be valuable for those looking to make investments this year. In this episode, we explore the hot neighborhoods that are in high demand right now and why these may not be the best places to invest in today. How technology is changing where people live, the ultra-luxury market, and how to determine the true value of an apartment. Ryan came to New York City after graduating college as a struggling actor, and after his character was killed off of a daytime soap opera, he found himself out of work and looking for another way to succeed. So we discuss how his acting and performance background has contributed to his business success, where thinking on your feet and communicating effectively are so critical. With almost 700,000 followers on Instagram (you can find him @ryanserhant), many listen to Ryan's market commentary and I hope you enjoy the ideas we share on this show. In this show, we discuss: What is the state of the New York City market today? How the number of homes sold per year is usually unchanged, regardless of the market. Are we in a buyer’s market? Who is buying in the ultra-luxury residential market? How to determine the value of an apartment Where is the hotspot to buy in NYC today? Why it is important not to “follow the leader” when thinking about your next investment How a background in acting has assisted in Ryan’s success? What are the biggest changes technology has had on the residential real estate business? Which past Behind the Bricks guest does Ryan say is the definition of a successful real estate investor? And much more For more information visit www.behindthebricks.com

This question comes via Quora.com and Martin has a link at the bottom to the entire post/response (partially posted here). In this episode Martin reads his response and adds a little color along the way shares his experience teaching "Success Skills" for C.L.A.S.S. Corporate Leaders Advocating Success Skills (volunteer instructor for Junior Achievement) at some of San Diego's more impoverished neighborhoods. Martin changes the definition of "success" as provided by the curriculum and teaches a slightly different definition. Then he shares some thoughts about just what the OPPOSITE of success might be if it isn't failure. MG's answer on quora.com: I really like this question. From my experience I've found "success" to be a very enigmatic concept/subject which I'm sure explains why so many of us struggle with it. The SHORT ANSWER to your question: It is going to be difficult if not impossible, (as evidenced by your question) to find success without a desireable destination, target or goal. So, do you have any feel for What your ideal future looks like? Simply reverse engineer any great "success" and you will notice they know at the very least or, knew what their target was/what they were going after. That doesn't mean they hit it, it just means they had a direction to aim for (fostering positive action and habits). Prolonged aimlessness can be very problematic. Try this: Ask 10 people if they want to be a "success". My guess is all 10 will say "YES". Then, ask those same 10 people to DEFINE what "success" means to them...
