I'm genuinely excited to have this man on the show for a conversation that's both of the moment, and critical. Naheed Nenshi, Leader of the Alberta NDP, is here.(Note: Since recording this episode, we've since been in contact with Premier Smith's Office and are hopeful to schedule that conversation soon). You know all about Mr. Nenshi and his powerful political brand. Former 3-term Mayor of Calgary. Named best Mayor in the World in 2014! Winner of the Alberta NDP Leadership on the first ballot about a year ago, with over 86% of the vote.He upped that to almost 90% in a leadership review just last weekend at the party's annual convention. Today, we'll talk more about his bio, background, and his decision to join the NDP. And then, the issues du jour ... Western alienation, Alberta separatism, and legitimate grievances about oil and gas. And also, what exactly is his argument to replace Premier Smith?Thank you for joining us on #TheHerleBurly podcast. This week on The Discourse, Cheryl and Erika wade into the political firestorm Premier Danielle Smith kicked off with her live address on Alberta's sovereignty. Cheryl opens with a scathing monologue on why Smith's refusal to outright reject separation has real consequences — politically, economically, and reputationally. Erika counters that Smith's move is about getting ahead of grassroots frustration, not fuelling separatism. Sparks fly as they unpack what it means to lower the referendum threshold, who's really behind the push for independence, and whether Smith is preserving democracy or playing footsie with Take Back Alberta. From there, your hosts tackle: Whether Alberta's “Fair Deal 2.0” will be an actual educational tool — or just more grievance theatre. Naheed Nenshi's fiery “just do it” dare to Smith, and why Cheryl thinks it's playing with fire. The Carney-Trump Oval Office meeting: why both hosts were (cautiously) impressed. Smith vs. Ford: two premiers, two very different tones on working with Prime Minister Carney. What the Alberta NDP's new federal opt-out means — and whether 89% is really a strong number for Nenshi. And a preview of three coming by-elections in Alberta: what each party's strategy might be, and whether the UCP will continue to drag out the timeline for Nenshi's seat. Listen now for a fiery debate on democracy, discontent, and the future of Alberta.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith delivered a scathing rebuke of Mark Carney and Naheed Nenshi in the Alberta Legislature this week while defending her government's efforts to protect Alberta from U.S. tariff threats. Smith also blasted Mark Carney for flip-flopping on his stance regarding the oil and gas emissions cap after a new report showed Alberta would bear the brunt of the economic fallout if the cap is implemented. In Calgary, Conservative candidate Amanpreet Singh Gill is under scrutiny for previously donating to the Liberals and George Chahal's riding association. And finally, Oilers fans have coined the term “Carney Curse” after Edmonton's recent string of bad luck following Carney's appearance on the ice with the team. For the past several months, Kathleen Ganley, Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, Sarah Hoffman and Naheed Nenshi have been battling it out to see who will replace Rachel Notley as leader of Alberta's NDP. Each leadership candidate faced an entrance fee of $60,000 and a spending limit of $500,000. Initially, David Shepherd registered his candidacy early, but did not pursue it further. Rakhi Pancholi also announced her candidacy early, but withdrew from the leadership race shortly after Naheed Nenshi entered the race. She then endorsed Nenshi. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we're bummed. Our long weekend plans collapsed like so much roofing that may or may not be a threat to some school kids on a class trip! Fortunately, there is lots of news and politics to chew on including surprise closures of tourist attractions, a surprising electoral victory and even a not-so-surprising one out west. As for the rest of the show, we've called the police, and they're here to talk!! This Thursday, June 27, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Mystery Science Centre Theatre. It was more than a little shocking last Friday when the Government of Ontario announced that they were closing the Ontario Science Centre due to a roof that might literally collapse at any minute. Naturally, that's not the whole story, and half the province has spent the last six days trying to figure where the spin ends and where the truth begins. Now we take our turn, is there skulduggery afoot, and is Doug Ford trying to blind us by getting rid of Science? In Naheed of the Night. Former Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi won the leadership of the Alberta NDP in a veritable landslide, and now all he has to do is bide his time till 2027 and the next Alberta election. We'll talk about what Nenshi's going to do in the meantime, and the road to get there, and we will also interject this talk about Alberta politics with a brief discussion about that big Liberal loss in Toronto-St. Paul and why it might not be the end of the world for Team Trudeau. Police Stories. This week, the Guelph Police Service released their annual report and in its pages there's a picture of what a tricky balancing act it is to police a rapidly growing city like ours. Here to take us behind the scenes, and behind the numbers this week, is Chief Gord Cobey, Deputy Chief Steve Gill, and Inspector Andrew Goody who oversees policing needs downtown. Together, they will explain why Guelph is safer than you might think, where they want to make improvements, and why they're trying to be more proactive. They say while the former Justice Minister might not be the favourite (or the biggest name) in the Alberta NDP leadership race, she's far from out of it. SummaryIn this podcast episode, Brittlestar Steve Boots and Lisa B, along with special guest Naheed Nenshi, discuss the relationship between Alberta and the rest of Canada, particularly Ontario. They explore why there seems to be a chip on Alberta's shoulder and why people in Ontario view Alberta as a wasteland. Naheed Nenshi, the guest, explains that some of the tension is rooted in the historical perception of the West as a source of resources for central Canada. The conversation also touches on environmental policies, the energy market system in Alberta, and the mismanagement of the electricity market by the UCP government. The conversation between Naheed K Nenshi and Brittlestar explores the political landscape in Alberta and the role of empathy and compromise in politics. Nenshi discusses the question of whether the government's actions are driven by malice or incompetence, and he leans towards incompetence. He also criticizes the current government for being disinterested in governing and for making policies that harm vulnerable groups. Nenshi explains his decision to re-enter politics and his goal of bringing hope and unity to Alberta. He emphasizes the importance of reaching out to rural communities and understanding their concerns. Nenshi also discusses the shift in political discourse towards anger and division, which he attributes to deliberate strategies by certain groups. In this final part of the conversation, Naheed K Nenshi discusses the demographics of political audiences and the changing voting patterns of older generations. He emphasizes the importance of engaging with diverse stakeholders and finding common ground within the party. Nenshi also addresses the need for clear communication and understanding when discussing healthcare and private investment. He acknowledges the challenges of building a coalition and winning over voters in Alberta, but remains optimistic about the future of the NDP.TakeawaysThere is a historical perception that the West, including Alberta, is seen as a source of resources for the enrichment of central Canada.Tension between Alberta and the rest of Canada is fueled by divisive discourse from politicians and an inability to make deals for the benefit of all.Environmental policies and the energy market system in Alberta contribute to the strained relationship between Alberta and the rest of Canada. The mismanagement of the electricity market by the UCP government has led to skyrocketing electricity prices in Alberta. The current government in Alberta is seen as incompetent rather than malicious, although there may be instances of malice in certain policies.Nenshi aims to bring hope and unity to Alberta and believes in the importance of reaching out to rural communities. The political discourse has shifted towards anger and division, which Nenshi attributes to deliberate strategies by certain groups.Nenshi emphasizes the need for empathy and compromise in politics and believes in the power of kindness and empathy to bring about positive change. The demographics of political audiences are changing, and it is important for parties to recognize and engage with diverse groups.Older generations are no longer exclusively conservative, as voting patterns show an inversion where older individuals are becoming more liberal.Engaging with stakeholders and finding common ground within the party is crucial for success.Clear communication and understanding are necessary when discussing healthcare and private investment.Building a coalition and winning over voters in Alberta can be challenging, but it is essential for the NDP's success. In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on March 29, 2024 — and happy Easter, everyone! — the dynamic Line editing duo first start by indulging Matt in some pure speculation. He has a hunch that after months of getting their butts kicked, the Liberals, specifically Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, might be starting to find his fight again. It's too soon to say for sure, but they'll be watching to see if the Liberals even have enough energy left to make a contest of it.Jen takes over then, and the two talk at length about the carbon tax, and a letter signed by many leading Canadian economists this week that lauds carbon pricing. The two don't disagree on the economics, but they do suspect that some of our leading economic thinkers may not have thought through the political ramifications of this. Does anyone think that Pierre Poilievre is worried that academic elites want the carbon tax to stay? Read the room, guys. Look around at the state of things. Are they trying to get him elected?Matt then notes a damned interesting speech by the Bank of Canada's senior deputy governor. In it, Carolyn Rogers warned a Halifax audience that Canada's economy is now in a state of "emergency." It's an interesting speech on its own merits, but what really caught Matt's attention was the simple fact that central bankers don't talk about emergencies even during literal emergencies, like plagues and wars. How freaked out must they be to talk this bluntly in prepared remarks?Jen then provides a quick update on the Nenshi campaign for Alberta NDP leader. It's starting to look like he's going to run away with it. She explains why. Also! The Line is now launching a new podcast — On The Line. SummaryIn this episode, the hosts discuss Naheed Nenshi's candidacy for the NDP party leadership in Alberta. They explore Nenshi's fit with the political landscape in Alberta and the need for buoyancy in the NDP. The hosts also discuss the challenge of appealing to the public beyond superficialities and the importance of ideology and affinity for the NDP. They highlight the lack of distinction between parties and the need to balance rural and urban interests. The episode concludes with a discussion on maintaining a positive leadership race and the challenges faced by Gil McGowan's campaign due to COVID-19. The conversation explores the binary nature of politics and the need for people to pick a side. It also discusses the fatigue with divisive rhetoric and the potential for people to tire of it. The perception of Canada being broken is examined, along with the impact of the pandemic on people's perspectives. The concept of recency bias in voting is explored, as well as the tendency to blame the federal government. The erosion of social consideration and the fragility of life are also discussed as factors contributing to the perception of a broken world. The conversation explores the themes of appreciating what we took for granted, the absurdities of institutions, the erosion of empathy, the rise of individualism, the cynicism of politicians, and the challenges of polling and public opinion.TakeawaysNaheed Nenshi's candidacy for the NDP party leadership in Alberta brings star power and the potential for a fresh perspective. The NDP in Alberta is at a crossroads and needs to balance its socialist roots with electability.Appealing to the public beyond superficialities and focusing on policy and ideology are crucial for the NDP's success. The NDP needs to address the grudges held by Albertans and focus on balancing rural and urban interests.Maintaining a positive leadership race and adapting to the challenges of COVID-19 are important for the success of the NDP. Calgary's ultra-progressive Mayor Naheed Nenshi has had a rough couple of months. Nenshi’s desperate attempt to cement his legacy in the form of a multi-billion dollar Olympics in the middle of an economic downturn fizzled out after taxpayers rejected the idea at the ballot box. Then, through freedom of information requests, our friends at taxpayer advocacy group Save Calgary, uncovered collusion between a mole in the Calgary Sun newsroom and the Calgary City administration. An article by Rick Bell that was critical of council, was leaked to the city by someone in the newsroom before it was ever published. Now, new reports are out showing a startling increase in crime in neighbourhoods where Nenshi’s city council has plunked a supervised drug injection site. And of course, Nenshi stuck both legs up to his knees right into his mouth when he said that Calgarians aren’t all just a bunch of “F-350 driving cavemen” in one of the most bizarre and pretentious attempts to defend the ethical nature of Alberta’s oil patch I have ever heard. There isn’t much accountability down at Calgary city hall. The conservatives on council are outnumbered and out-gunned. And that’s where Save Calgary comes in. They fight for transparency and honesty in municipal government. Joining me tonight from Save Calgary is a good friend of the show, William McBeath, to talk about Nenshi’s terrible end to 2018, followed by an even worse start in 2019.

Calgary’s “out of touch” politicians turn pro-pipeline rally-goers against them (Guest: William McBeath)

Calgary held yet another massive lunch time pro-pipeline rally this past Monday. Over 2,000 people showed up at Calgary's Municipal Plaza to show their support for Canada's battered, beleaguered oil and gas industry. The speakers at the rally included Calgary municipal politicians which shouldn’t have been unusual or controversial, except those speakers ended up making themselves both! Mayor Nenshi tried to speak French to the rally-goers, which earned him loud boos. Then he lectured the attendees on the merits of fighting climate change. Councillor Peter Dejong was also booed after telling the crowd to support Quebec cheese and to avoid trade embargoes and boycotts. In response to the criticism from the crowd, he whined, “and you call yourselves Canadian? Wow.” How could these two be so tone deaf and out of touch with the concerns of the people in their own city that they turned a pro-pipeline rally against themselves? Tonight William McBeath from Save Calgary joins me to discuss how the rally went sideways for Calgary's purple prince, Mayor Nenshi, and we also examine city hall’s latest attempts to get a handle on renegade rookie councillor Jeromy Farkas. It’s been a horrible week for Nenshi and it’s only Wednesday!

On November 13th, 2018, Calgary's residents wisely voted against a two-week-long legacy party for Mayor Naheed Nenshi. In a municipal plebiscite where over three-hundred thousand ballots were cast, over 56 per cent voted “No” to Calgary hosting the 2026 Olympic Winter Games. Thank God. It was a rebuke of the wasteful priorities at Calgary city council, a rejection of the corruption of the International Olympic Committee and a rare win for common sense and accountability in Alberta politics. Will this whole expensive and secretive debacle be a gut check for City Hall? Or will Mayor Nenshi simply move on to the next expensive pet project to be laid at the feet of Calgary taxpayers? Joining me tonight to discuss how Calgary dodged the Olympic bullet, and what's on the horizon for Calgary taxpayers suffering through the worst economic recession in a generation, is taxpayer advocate, William McBeath, from municipal accountability group, Save Calgary.

And the media reports were that Nenshi and Trudeau hugged it out, and that someone wearing a novelty shirt wanted to kill Trudeau obviously and he’s really, really scary!

Well the bid for the Olympic Games in Calgary is finally over—in our wee city there are people trumpeting triumphantly, and others crying in their beer—for us it's just another day. Taxation has gone crazy stacking up against small business, public works of art are being called into question, the world is mayhem which is why we end up talking about folklore, the law of supply and demand, virtual reality, video games, Newton the time travelling cat, and stand-up comedy. Will Calgary taxpayers get saddled with hosting unaffordable Olympics? (Guest: William McBeath, Save Calgary)

The Calgary Olympic bid has been a dishonest mess from the very beginning. It’s become a Frankenstein monster, roughly sewn together in order to realize Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s dreams of a global scale legacy party for himself, paid for by the taxpayers of Canada. News of leaked conversations, secret meetings, behind the scenes deals, and duelling taxpayer federation associations cross-endorsing each other's cities, have solidified opposition to the bid and turned patriotic fans of the olympics into cynics. Over the course of 24 hours, the bid has been dead, resurrected, and then maybe dead again. It’s changing by the minute and costing money every step of the way. Join me tonight as I speak with William McBeath from Save Calgary, in an interview that we recorded Tuesday morning, way back when the Olympic bid was still dead in its grave. Watch as William explains how Calgary taxpayers got so far into this mess in the first place, and what we can do next to stop the bleeding at Calgary city hall.

The Roy Green Show Podcast   Following the mass shooting in Las Vegas last weekend, the topic of gun ownership is once again being widely debated. What is the fundamental reason behind all the shootings and deaths in the United States? An epidemiologist at the University of Illinois argues the shootings are a 'public health issue'. He warned the Governor of Illinois that a surge in shootings in Chicago would take place after funding was cut for the CeaseFire program (now called Cure Violence). He was right. Guest: Dr. Gary Slutkin, epidemiologist at the University of Illinois and founder of Cure Violence - Tracey Wilson argues that legal gun owners need to come out of the closet in order to alter public opinion of who owns firearms and to reduce the stigma around the people who do.   Guest: Tracey Wilson, Orleans chairwoman of the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights - Almost immediately, ISIS claimed responsibility for last weekend's mass shooting in Las Vegas.
