Dave Delaney is a communication expert and founder of FutureForth. He brings his Nice Method to his work as a keynote speaker, author, and consultant—helping leaders and aspiring leaders improve their communication and relationship building. We discussed all of this and more this week on the On Brand podcast. About Dave Delaney Dave Delaney is a communication expert and founder of Futureforth.com. He teaches leaders the Nice Method, which emphasizes compassion, empathy, and inclusivity in communication. He's worked with brands like Google and LinkedIn and is a keynote speaker and author of several books, including “New Business Networking” and “The Nice Method.” Dave is passionate about helping others improve their communication skills and building stronger relationships. Episode Highlights Why do we so often forget the “nice” in our communication with others? Dave summed it up in one word—empathy. “We don't pause long enough in our back and forths. Slowing down is a big part of my work.” Nice networking. We talked a lot about the bad actors that have given networking a bad name. But, as Dave noted, “Networking is essential in business.” What about internal networking? This too is essential. Dave shared that a big part of FutureForth's work is focused on employee retention. “If people have friends at work, they're less likely to leave.” What brand has made Dave smile recently? Dave shared his story of discovering Well Being non-alcoholic beer back in 2020. This brand and others led to his three years of sobriety. He also gave a shout out to Diageo for the launch of Guinness Zero. Finally! To learn more, connect with Dave on LinkedIn and DaveDelaneySpeaks.com. Dave Delaney is a networking guru. He teaches digital marketing, social media strategy, and business networking. Dave is a keynote speaker and author of the book New Business Networking. He has a course and platform, called Networking for Nice People, that helps nice people get into networking. He wants to remove the sleazy feeling that people often get when they are networking. Dave joins me today on this episode of Real Relationships to discuss how to network if you are a nice person, think of this episode as your own personal networking guide. You’ll want to hear Dave’s take on how nice people can network effectively, so grab your earbuds and listen to this episode of Real Relationships. Why is Dave focusing on improv training for companies? Dave’s Communication Reboot course teaches improv training to companies to help them learn to effectively communicate. Improv training helps improve communication not just between coworkers, but between entire teams. Everyone has fun together learning how to communicate and collaborate in an upbeat environment. Improv training teaches active listening, empathy, and helps improve problem-solving skills. This training helps teams work together to solve any kind of problem that arises in the workplace. Dave thinks that improv training can help everyone become a better communicator, listen to what he has to say on the matter and consider whether you think improv training could help you. How can improv help you build and maintain better relationships? Having improv training helps you to network effectively at conferences. At conferences you are not just there to see the speakers, you are also there to meet people and build relationships. Improv teaches you to become a great listener by learning how to use active listening. When you ask follow up questions that are based on what the person tells you, this opens them up for future relationships. It gives you an opportunity to explore new business relationships. You may end up getting more out of the networking than the workshops at the conference. Listen to this conversation to hear if you think that improv training could help you at your next conference. How did he end up building great relationships? Dave has been able to build great relationships by using effective listening and by finding ways to help people. Dave is always looking for ways to serve other people. One way that he uses Contactually to help him with this is by adding tags to contacts, this helps him make connections when he is looking to help someone out. He doesn’t connect people looking for a favor in return, he just genuinely tries to help people. Dave finds that connecting people and genuinely looking for ways to serve people is the best way to form relationships and to do business. Listen to Dave’s advice on building great relationships on this episode of Real Relationships. What are some bad habits people have when networking People tend to approach networking the wrong way. Many are simply trying to discover what they can get out of a networking event. But this isn’t the way to do it. He says the best way to network is to just find people to help. You can do this by listening to them effectively and always asking follow up questions. Dave lets the other person do most of the talking so that he can find ways to help them. After the event, he takes notes on their business cards to reference later. Dave has fantastic advice on not just networking but building real relationships, so listen to this networking guide to hear all of his useful tips. Sometimes the event you want to organize has already been created. It's sitting there dormant, like a classic car collecting dust, hidden in a garage. Jeff Dolan, an avid film-maker, wanted to start his own community. Being overwhelmed with the thought of creating a group from scratch, he realized one was already waiting for him to take the reigns of. Nashville Filmmakers was re-born. Jeff Dolan on the relaunch and success of Nashville Filmmakers Shout out to Jeff Brown, Chris Mason, and Mitch Canter. Thanks guys. Jeff Dolan is a Nashville-based community leader and filmmaker. He studied Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined a start-up called MedFusion. He talks about balancing business with art. Students need to be networking while they are in school. Think about networking before you need it. He got sidetracked because of a lack of focus. On building a community, "You have an advantage if you can focus on an industry." There's only two reasons you come to Nashville, music or a relationship. It's true, both Jeff and I came to Nashville because of lovely women (hi, Heather). The Nashville Filmmakers meet up group began in 2008 but was left dormant for a couple of years. Jeff has grown membership to 500. When Jeff came to Nashville, he wanted to find his community. He found everyone was in different fields with different interests. He had trouble getting a group together who were all on the same page. It's very hard to build a new group from scratch. "If you can find a group of these people (with a similar interest) that doesn't have the leadership. You can step into the role of leadership and lead them". "It's like finding a tribe without a leader, and stepping up and becoming that leader." He found the filmmaker group on MeetUp.com, but it was dormant. He asked to become the leader of it and took it over. He started planning, finding a location, locking down an agenda, and building a vision for the group. The feedback from members was very positive. He first looked at similar groups across the country to identity goals. He had to determine who the members of the group were. What area of filmmaking are they interested in? Jeff explains how he determined the best format for his meet up. Take over a dormant group. Poll them to find out what their needs are. Determine the best format for the meet ups. Jeff first publicly presented on a topic he was passionate about at PodCamp Nashville 2012. Sign up to PCN 2014. Jeff speaks about his fear of doing anything publicly outside of his job. He had concerns that his employer would not be happy with this. Understand if you have a day job, you can do it, but you have to be more patient. Jeff wrote a thought-provoking blog post about the size of media and how our attention spans and shortening. Squirrel! Jeff shares his thoughts on media and podcasting specifically. "Our society wants connection". Disappearing media like SnapChat, Confide, and Cyber Dust. Contact Jeff at jeffdolan.com or on Twitter @jeffdolan. Jeff recommends Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative and Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered.
