Mr. Untouchable, a 2007 documentary directed by Marc Levin, describes the rise and fall of former New York City drug kingpin, Leroy (“Nicky”) Barnes. In the early 1970s, Barnes formed “The Council,” an organized crime syndicate that controlled a significant part of the heroin trade in Harlem. Inspired by the Italian-American mafia, Barnes became one of the most powerful and notorious figures in New York City. A flashy and flamboyant fixture on the free-wheeling social scene of the period, Barnes quickly drew the attention of law enforcement. After several unsuccessful state prosecution attempts, Barnes, along with multiple other associates, was indicted by federal prosecutors in New York in 1977. Barnes was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Barnes, however, was released in 1998, in exchange for working as a government informant, and entered the Witness Protection Program, where he remained until his death in 2012.  Barnes was also depicted in Ridley Scott's 2007 film American Gangster, which starred Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, another notorious drug kingpin from the era. Cuba Gooding Jr. portrayed Barnes in that film. Joining me to talk about Mr. Untouchable and the Nicky Barnes case is Robert B. Fiske, Jr., Senior Counsel at Davis Polk in New York, where he previously served as litigation partner for many years. Bob Fiske is one of the most prominent and respected trial lawyers in America. He has been involved in some of the most notable cases of the last half-century, including as special prosecutor in the Whitewater controversy and the death of White House counsel Vince Foster, the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster, the antitrust suit between the USFL and. NFL, the most contentious America's Cup ever, and the financial swindler Bernie Madoff.  Mr. Fiske also served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1976 to 1980, during which time he led the prosecution of Nicky Barnes. Timestamps:0:00   Introduction3:18     Drug trafficking in Harlem and the South Bronx in the 1970s4:55    Who was Nicky Barnes6:27     Trying to bring Barnes to justice7:57      “Mr. Untouchable” and a call from Attorney General Griffin Bell13:08   A sequestered and anonymous jury17:22    Navigating credibility issues with key government witnesses29:25   An issue with a juror dubbed the “Marlboro Man”33:46   The guilty verdict against Barnes36:25   The larger implications of the Barnes case37:51    The depiction of Nicky Barnes on filmFurther reading:Barnes, Leroy & Folsom, Tom, Mr. Untouchable: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of Heroin's Teflon Don (2007)Ferretti, Fred, “Mr. Untouchable,” N.Y. Sumit Sharma and Chris Mitchell from Breaking Atoms podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Sumit's choice American Gangster. American Gangster (2007) is biographical crime thriller based on Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Steven Zaillian based on the The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. It's stacked cast features Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Huey Lucas, Josh Brolin as Detective Trupo, RZA as Moses Jones, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes, Armand Assante as Dominic Cattano, Idris Elba as Tango and Common as Turner Lucas. In 1960s Harlem Frank Lucas is Bumpy Johnson's right-hand man. When Bumpy dies of a heart attack Frank sees an opportunity to innovate in the drug trade by buying directly from the source in Vietnam and thus cutting out the middle man. Not only that, he trademarks his superior heroin as ‘Blue Magic' and its affordability eliminates the competition. All is going well for Frank until he comes under scrutiny from aspiring lawyer and honest detective Richie Roberts. American Gangster is solid crime drama with a standout performance from Denzel Washington. Like with many Hollywood adaptations what is true and what is there for dramatic effect is unclear but it does make a compelling story of a true life figure. Recommendability scores for American Gangster were high, with a runtime of nearly three hours repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.88. Welcome to Episode #45 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Nicky Barnes onto the show. She is a yoga teacher from Vanuatu and she's also the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu. It's donation based and, it has been for 13 years. My conversation with Nicola Barnes, a yoga teacher from Vanuatu was so delightful as we took a deep dive into the world of her yoga association in Vanuatu. And we also discussed how yoga is an art and an act of coming home. I hope that this conversation made you curious about balance and movement and expression, as well as the act of coming home to yourself without pressure without ego, without ambition, just coming home. Tell me more about Nicola Barnes Nicola Barnes started yoga seriously while living in London in the late 1990s. She became a yoga teacher in India at Neyyar Dam Sivinanda Ashram in 2003. Since then, she has taught in the Cayman Islands and in Vanuatu. She is the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu, which is entirely donation-based and has been for 13 years. All of the yoga teachers in the Vanuatu yoga association volunteer their time. She teaches a mixed Hatha style, which is mostly asana based, but does involve pranayama. She has been teaching yoga for 19 years. The Vanuatu Yoga Association was set up so that yoga in Port Vila would have a sense of community and longevity. It also gives a forum for those who love to share their passion for yoga with others to instruct classes. The Vanuatu Yoga Association aims to support the local community by offering classes that are welcoming and affordable. What to expect in the Yoga In Vanuatu episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast I loved how Nicola highlighted how yoga exists in the real world— it's not a cartoon or a Hollywood creation. It exists in the raw, unexpected, natural way of life and of living. She pointed out how Instagram yoga with perfect hair, lovely beauty, and being picture-perfect isn't how yoga should really be viewed or considered— it's messy, raw, and includes all the hiccups and bumps in life! We also dove into how Nicky, along with two other co-founders, dreamed up the Vanuatu yoga association and decided to make it a nonprofit, volunteer based organization. Nicky expressed that, “It's just been amazing that trusting in the goodness of people and trusting that something that doesn't seem to be commercially logical can work.” For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Vanuatu episode? Why found a yoga association in Vanuatu Let yoga be a natural evolution, don't push too hard Hollywood-style, glamorous Instagram yoga isn't the messy, raw, yoga of the real world Yoga and kitesurfing: balance, movement, expression The challenges of studio ownership on a small island Connect with Nicola Barnes https://web.facebook.com/PortVilaYoga/?_rdc=1&_rdr https://yoga.vu/ Want more? Many books have written about the black gangster. They have been, for the most part, lengthy tomes focusing on the kingpins of the gangland scene, gangsters with names like Nicky Barnes, Frank Lucas, Lorenzo Fat Cat Nichols and Kenneth Supreme McGiff. Yet there are many stories about the black gangster that have not received much press coverage or have simply been ignored or missed by the media. They indeed reveal a lot about the history of the hood. Straight from Hood is a compilation of some of those fascinating stories. You will find tales featuring drug kingpins, entertainers, hit men, street gangs, con men, corrupt cops and reformed gang bangers. Read about the most feared man in the entertainment industry, the love story between Fran, a former heroin addict, and David, a reformed gangster, both of whom have become celebrities; the unlikely alliance between an ambitious black gangster and a violent-indeed crazy-white Italian-American mobster; the terrorist plot involving a Chicago street gang, and more. Learn about Al Capone's impact on Chicago's African American community and what Alcatraz has to do with Harlem's most famous godfather? Why is Denzel Washington in this book? Who is a modern day desperado who died by the gun but managed to live on through rap music? How did a stick-up artist from Brooklyn become Hip-Hop's answer to Lee Harvey Oswald? Each of the following stories are amazing and all of them true. STRAIGHT FROM THE HOOD-Ron Chepsiuk and Scott Wilson
