Day 5 of the Duane “Keffe D” Davis Trial: The Last Photo, the Documentary Interviews, and Davis's Own WordsOn Day 5 of the murder trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, charged in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur, the prosecution continued building its case with eyewitness testimony, documentary filmmakers, and more of Davis's recorded statements to police. The day opened with Leonard Jefferson, the man who took what is widely regarded as the last known photograph of Tupac Shakur alive. Jefferson testified that he was in Las Vegas for the Mike Tyson fight, sold his tickets in the MGM Grand lobby, and later found himself stopped at a red light next to the BMW carrying Tupac and Suge Knight. He snapped a 35mm photo of the pair before following the convoy onto Flamingo Road. Moments later he heard gunfire, saw the BMW make a U-turn, and watched as Suge Knight emerged yelling that “Pac is shot.” Jefferson later returned to the scene at a detective's request and turned over the film. He pushed back against online conspiracy theories claiming he staged the famous image.Next on the stand was Mario Diaz, showrunner and director of the BET docuseries Death Row Chronicles. Diaz detailed two formal interviews he conducted with Davis in 2017, confirmed Davis was paid for his participation, and walked the jury through how the series incorporated portions of Davis's earlier recorded statements to investigators. He testified that the interviews were unscripted and that no questions were provided in advance.Prosecutors then played extended audio from a voluntary September 2009 police interview in which Davis described the night of the shooting in detail. In the recording, Davis discusses obtaining a gun (described as a .40-caliber Glock) from Eric “Zip” Martin, handing it off inside the white Cadillac, and his nephew Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson ultimately firing the shots. He also referenced Sean “Diddy” Combs and expressed regret, saying he wished the events had never happened and that meeting Combs had “messed up” his life.The day closed with testimony from filmmaker Michael Dorsey, a technical consultant on Death Row Chronicles and producer connected to the Murder Rap project. Keefe D spent years claiming Sean Combs placed a million-dollar bounty on Tupac Shakur and Suge Knight. He said it in police interviews. He put it in a memoir. It ended up in court filings that reportedly reference Combs seventy-seven times. Combs has denied any connection to the murder. And now Keefe D's defense team wants Combs to say that denial under oath, in front of the jury that will decide whether Keefe D spends the rest of his life in prison.The reasoning is deliberate. If Combs testifies he never offered a bounty, it does not implicate him. It destroys Keefe D's credibility. Every interview, every recorded confession, every page of the book prosecutors are treating as a roadmap to the murder — all of it becomes the output of a man who fabricates stories for attention and money. The defense is not building an alibi. It is asking a jury to disbelieve their own client so thoroughly that the prosecution's case falls apart.Combs is serving a fifty-month federal sentence on unrelated Mann Act convictions. Whether he would appear in a Las Vegas courtroom is an open question. But his name is already woven through both the criminal case and a new wrongful death lawsuit filed by Tupac's stepbrother Mopreme Shakur, which names Keefe D and one hundred unnamed defendants. Across every alias, every legal document connected to the case against Keefe D, the references keep surfacing. A recorded 2008 police interview. A 2009 follow-up with Las Vegas detectives. A 2025 DEA document obtained by USA Today. A Netflix documentary that put the million-dollar bounty allegation back on screen for millions of viewers. Combs has denied involvement forcefully and consistently. Law enforcement said in 2024 he was never a suspect in the case.None of that has stopped the allegation from growing louder. And now Keefe D's defense team wants Combs in the courtroom — not as a defendant, but as their own witness. The strategy is to have Combs deny the bounty under oath, proving Keefe D fabricated the entire story. If the jury buys that Keefe D lied about Combs, the defense argues, they should believe he lied about every confession the prosecution is using to build its case.The criminal trial is set for August 10.
