John Gotti, the infamous ‘Teflon Don' boss of New York's Gambino crime family, smiled as he received a life sentence in a Brooklyn courthouse on 23rd June, 1992. Outside, chaos reigned as nearly a thousand supporters flipped over a federal marshal's car and chanted in defence of the mobster, framing his conviction as an anti-Italian injustice. But the FBI had been determined to bring Gotti down. After multiple failed attempts - including a memorable trial with a bribed juror - they finally found their opportunity by bugging his social club, capturing crucial conversations that convicted him of multiple murders and racketeering. Arion, Rebecca and Olly contrast Gotti's reputation in his Queens neighbourhood with his perception amongst the public at large; explain how his charisma and flashy style earned him the nickname ‘Dapper Don' before he became ‘Teflon'; and reveal how a true crime documentary helped bring him to justice... Mr. Untouchable, a 2007 documentary directed by Marc Levin, describes the rise and fall of former New York City drug kingpin, Leroy (“Nicky”) Barnes. In the early 1970s, Barnes formed “The Council,” an organized crime syndicate that controlled a significant part of the heroin trade in Harlem. Inspired by the Italian-American mafia, Barnes became one of the most powerful and notorious figures in New York City. A flashy and flamboyant fixture on the free-wheeling social scene of the period, Barnes quickly drew the attention of law enforcement. After several unsuccessful state prosecution attempts, Barnes, along with multiple other associates, was indicted by federal prosecutors in New York in 1977. Barnes was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Barnes, however, was released in 1998, in exchange for working as a government informant, and entered the Witness Protection Program, where he remained until his death in 2012.  Barnes was also depicted in Ridley Scott's 2007 film American Gangster, which starred Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, another notorious drug kingpin from the era. Cuba Gooding Jr. portrayed Barnes in that film. Joining me to talk about Mr. Untouchable and the Nicky Barnes case is Robert B. Fiske, Jr., Senior Counsel at Davis Polk in New York, where he previously served as litigation partner for many years. Bob Fiske is one of the most prominent and respected trial lawyers in America. He has been involved in some of the most notable cases of the last half-century, including as special prosecutor in the Whitewater controversy and the death of White House counsel Vince Foster, the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster, the antitrust suit between the USFL and. NFL, the most contentious America's Cup ever, and the financial swindler Bernie Madoff.  Mr. Fiske also served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1976 to 1980, during which time he led the prosecution of Nicky Barnes. Timestamps:0:00   Introduction3:18     Drug trafficking in Harlem and the South Bronx in the 1970s4:55    Who was Nicky Barnes6:27     Trying to bring Barnes to justice7:57      “Mr. Untouchable” and a call from Attorney General Griffin Bell13:08   A sequestered and anonymous jury17:22    Navigating credibility issues with key government witnesses29:25   An issue with a juror dubbed the “Marlboro Man”33:46   The guilty verdict against Barnes36:25   The larger implications of the Barnes case37:51    The depiction of Nicky Barnes on filmFurther reading:Barnes, Leroy & Folsom, Tom, Mr. Untouchable: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of Heroin's Teflon Don (2007)Ferretti, Fred, “Mr. Untouchable,” N.Y. The NFN Radio News Podcast

So now with Judge Juan Merchan letting Donald Trump off the hook for his felony conviction in the New York Stormy Daniels hush money case, he's effectively been placed above the law. Yes, many pundits claim victory of sorts because Merchan upheld Trump's conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, making Trump officially a convicted felon. We're supposed to be satisfied with that? Not long ago Trump faced four criminal trials and perhaps years behind bars. Besides the hush money case, there was the federal election interference case. The Georgia election interference case. The Florida classified documents case. But miraculously Teflon Don's legal maneuverings and election victory mean none of those cases will stick, and the two federal prosecutions already have been dismissed. Trump's spokesperson, Steven Cheung, says Trump's election was a “mandate” from voters who demanded an end to the “witch hunts” against him. Really? The American people want a convicted felon as their president? I don't think so. Gullible supporters believed Trump when he promised to slash inflation and make their lives better. That's why they voted for him, along with his macho man image. But now that Trump is acting like a dictator-in-waiting, wanting to take over Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, many realize that was a bunch of campaign crap. Sounds to me like Trump's been hanging out with Putin far too long and is taking a page out of his playbook. Don't know about you, but I'm dreading what's ahead over the next four years. I'm 82 tomorrow, and I hope I make it to see the end of Donald J. Trump's political career.

The assassination of Paul Castellano in 1985 marked a turning point in the history of organized crime in New York City. As the boss of the Gambino crime family, Castellano had shifted the family's focus toward white-collar crimes, distancing himself from the traditional, street-level operations favored by his underboss, Aniello Dellacroce, and his faction. Tensions escalated after Dellacroce's death, leading to a power struggle within the family. John Gotti, a rising figure opposed to Castellano's leadership style, orchestrated the hit on Castellano outside Sparks Steak House in Manhattan, seizing control of the family shortly after. This act of defiance broke Mafia rules and ushered in a new era where traditional protocols were disregarded in favor of ambition and power. The aftermath of Castellano's murder brought unprecedented attention from law enforcement, which intensified efforts to dismantle the Gambino family. John Gotti's flamboyant leadership style and public persona as "The Teflon Don" attracted media attention and made the family a prime target for legal action. Gotti's eventual conviction, aided by the testimony of his underboss Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, marked a significant victory for law enforcement. This led to a decline in the power and influence of the Five Families, pushing organized crime in New York towards more discreet and fragmented operations.   Direct quotes from the project:   "Pornography, manifested today in the omnipresent propagation of transgender ideology and sexualization of children, for instance, is not a political Gordian knot inextricably binding up disparate claims about free speech, property rights, sexual liberation, and child welfare. It has no claim to First Amendment protection. Its purveyors are child predators and misogynistic exploiters of women. Their product is as addictive as any illicit drug and as psychologically destructive as any crime. Pornography should be outlawed. The people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned. Educators and public librarians who purvey it should be classed as registered sex offenders. And telecommunications and technology firms that facilitate its spread should be shuttered."   "Conservatives should gratefully celebrate the greatest pro-family win in a generation: overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that for five decades made a mockery of our Constitution and facilitated the deaths of tens of millions of unborn children. But the Dobbs decision is just the beginning. Conservatives in the states and in Washington, including in the next conservative Administration, should push as hard as possible to protect the unborn in every jurisdiction in America. In particular, the next conservative President should work with Congress to enact the most robust protections for the unborn that Congress will support while deploying existing federal powers to protect innocent life and vigorously complying with statutory bans on the federal funding of abortion. Conservatives should ardently pursue these pro-life and pro-family policies while recognizing the many women who find themselves in immensely difficult and often tragic situations and the heroism of every choice to become a mother."

Ring of Fire Radio with Sam Seder and Mike Papantonio

This week on Ring of Fire! Donald Trump is celebrating the fact that Judge Aileen Cannon completely bastardized the justice system this week, and part of his celebration included an absolutely unhinged post on Truth Social. The former President praised the judge and then called for all cases against him to be dismissed in a show of "unity" for the nation, and then he launched a completely fact-free attack on the Democrats (right after calling for unity.) Buried deep in a story from Axios this week is a statement from a "senior House Democrat" who told the outlet that Democrats have already "resigned themselves" to a second term of Donald Trump in The White House. This is a shocking statement, and it deserved far more coverage than Axios gave it. This means that Democrats are either giving up the fight before it even begins, or that they believe there is no way to beat Teflon Don. Donald Trump's campaign is not wasting any time using the imagery of Saturday's shooting in their campaign fundraising pitches, which is what everyone knew would happen. On Monday, the campaign sent out an email that featured the photo of a bloody Trump raising his fist after being shot at on Saturday, with the email saying "FEAR NOT!" followed by a stream of statements depicting Trump as some sort of hero. Donald Trump has repeatedly trashed electric vehicles and has promised to return America to gasoline cars if he returns to office. In spite of those promises, Elon Musk has decided to pledge $45 million per month to a Trump-supporting Super PAC, even though Musk owns the largest all-electric car companies in the country. He'll likely end up regretting this decision in the long run. All that, and more, on this week's Ring of Fire Podcast!

With the conviction of former POTUS Trump on all 34 counts last week, you might think that that would catalyze many of even his most ardent supporters to call for him to drop out of the current race for the White House. Think again. Fong and Kemp try to discern why the majority of GOP "the party of law and order" politicians are crying foul, validating Trump's own bogus claim that he's a political martyr. But these two veteran podcasters also weigh in on how the Biden camp needs to capitalize on this first known instance when something has finally stuck to "Teflon Don."

If you're thinking that in the US, all may theoretically be created equal, but we're sure not treated equally under the law. It's a fact that those with money, fame and power get away with (almost) murder. And if Donald Trump did, indeed, shoot someone on Fifth Avenue? Well, let's just say the jury's still out on that one. And if TFG has any say, the trial would be perpetually delayed. Of course I have a million questions for Lisa Graves, the unofficial legal expert of the Nicole Sandler Show, having to do with Teflon Don. But wait, there's more... There's our Supreme Extreme Court, where ethics apparently aren't a requirement to be a Justice. The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos by Mark Chiusano https://amzn.to/3Gi4891 From the dogged Long Island reporter who has been on his trail since 2019, the bizarre, page-turning, and frankly hysterical story of America's most outrageous grifter—US Representative George Santos. America has grown used to larger-than-life politicians: Teflon Don, AOC, MTG, Dark Brandon, and all the rest have injected DC politics with an unmistakable edge of celebrity flair and tabloid intrigue. Yet in 2022, a new player on the national scene outshone them all. George Anthony Devolder Santos, and his revolving door of pseudonyms, shed glaring new light on how far we'd all let our politics slide as his claimed resume was shred to bits in the wake of a longshot run to office from New York's 3rd Congressional District. From Wall Street gigs to an amateur volleyball career, from embellished claims of Jewish heritage to a fabricated 9/11 story involving his mother's death, Santos's legend continued to grow as his web of lies evaporated in real time. And the only thing wilder than this charlatan embedding himself in the warm, consequence-evading arms of our nation's capital was the Queens con artist's refusal to bow his head in shame. The Santos show continues, as he joins the ranks of high-wattage fakers like Anna Delvey and Elizabeth Holmes. Newsday alum and PEN/Hemingway honoree Mark Chiusano tells the full (well, as full as can be given the subject) story of Santos here for the first time. From humble years spent in Brazil, to glamorous nights on the west side of Manhattan, to the stunning small-time scams employed to ease his slippery climb up the American society ladder, The Fabulist tells a story you'll have to read for yourself to believe…and even then, it's George Santos, so who's to say for sure. Combining the very best of boots-on-the-ground journalism, dishy backroom dealings, and glittery details about Gold Coast mansions and bodice-baring drag shows that'd feel just as at home in your next summer beach read, The Fabulist is truly stranger than fiction.

The Gotti Boys - The Mafia that killed for John GottiEd Opperman is joined by Tony Staffano, a national expert on the American Mafia. He is the author of nine books on the subject, including the recent bestsellers: The Deadly Don and Top Hoodlum. In addition to being an organized crime expert, DeStefano is an award-winning journalist who covers crime in New York for Newsday. He has won numerous awards for his work, including a Pulitzer Prize and an Emmy.John Gotti Jr. was an American gangster and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. He ordered and helped to orchestrate the murder of Gambino boss Paul Castellano in December 1985 and took over the family shortly thereafter, becoming boss of what was described as America's most powerful crime syndicate.Gotti and his brothers grew up in poverty and turned to a life of crime at an early age. Gotti quickly became one of the crime family's biggest earners and a protégé of Aniello Dellacroce, the Gambino family underboss, operating out of the neighborhood of Ozone Park in Queens. Following the FBI's indictment of members of Gotti's crew for selling narcotics, Gotti began to fear that he and his brother would be killed by Castellano for dealing drugs. As this fear continued to grow, and amidst growing dissent over the leadership of the crime family, Gotti organized the murder of Castellano. At his peak, Gotti was one of the most powerful and dangerous crime bosses in the United States. During his era, he became widely known for his outspoken personality and flamboyant style, which gained him favor with some of the general public. While his peers generally avoided attracting attention, especially from the media, Gotti became known as "The Dapper Don", for his expensive clothes and personality in front of news cameras. He was later given the nickname "The Teflon Don" after three high-profile trials in the 1980s resulted in his acquittal, though it was later revealed that the trials had been tainted by jury tampering, juror misconduct and witness intimidation. Law enforcement authorities continued gathering evidence against Gotti, who reportedly earned between $5–20 million per year as Gambino boss.Website : Tony StefanoThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

In Glenn's longform weekend podcast he again runs down this week's legal recap. First he discusses the ever changing excuses of Donald Trump when asked about the newly released audio of him sharing classified military documents on Iran. Then, he talks about Trump's former lawyer - Rudy Giuliani - who has reportedly reached a proffer agreement with the D.O.J. Did Rudy flip on Teflon Don for a "Sweetheart Deal"? Next, Glenn unpacks the recent heart-breaking unsound decisions by the Supreme Court: gutting Affirmative Action in colleges; striking down Biden's student-loan plan; and siding with a web designer in a blow to LGBTQ protections. Then winding it up - he gives ideas on what we can do about a corrupt Supreme Court and how we can change the odds in our favor.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Today, on Crime & Entertainment, we present another installment of "Behind the Gangster." On this show, we will deep dive into a particular gangster's life that has been portrayed on-screen. As audience members, we often wonder about the validity of story lines within organized crime movies. Well, "Behind the Gangster" will allow you to get the answers. Today, alongside Anthony Ruggiano Jr. we will give a perspective of the Teflon Don himself John Gotti.John Gotti is one of the most charismatic & polarizing mafia members ever in the history of LA Cosa Nostra. Gotti, alongside his brothers, grew up in poverty and turned to a life of crime at an early age. Gotti quickly became one of the crime family's biggest earners and a protégé of Aniello Dellacroce, the Gambino family underboss, operating out of the neighborhood of Ozone Park in Queens.Gotta would rise through the ranks and become a full made member of the American Mafia. When long time Boss Carlo Gambino passed away many thought the job would go to Underboss Aniello Dellacroce, however the spot was given to Paul Castellano his nephew.  The resentment of Gotti plus the fact that his brothers and members of his crew were dealing drugs only fuled the fire that was burning. Aniello died shortly after Paul became boss and FBI's would bring down indictment of members of Gotti's crew for selling narcotics, Gotti began to fear that he and his brother would be killed by Castellano for dealing drugs. Gotti's underboss, Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, aided the FBI in convicting Gotti; in 1991, Gravano agreed to turn state's evidence and testify against Gotti after hearing the boss make disparaging remarks about him on a wiretap that implicated them both in several murders. In 1992, Gotti was convicted of five murders, conspiracy to commit murder, racketeering, obstruction of justice, tax evasion, illegal gambling, extortion, and loansharking. He received life in prison without parole and was transferred to United States Penitentiary, Marion. Gotti died of throat cancer on June 10, 2002Was John Gotti good for the Mob?
