The Areu sisters dropped everything to listen and comment on Britney Spears and Sir Elton John's new/classic song "Hold Me Closer." This is the first of many emergency podcasts! When this new pop tune appeared – from Paris Hilton's Instagram story to Actor Fernando Carsa's IG Live – Podcaster/Host Cristina Areu and Sister/Researcher/Co-host Sofia Areu immediately asked: " ... is Britney the tiny dancer?" This "B is for Britney!" musical delight didn't stop the podcasters from using social media responsibly and give proper shoutouts to Elvis Presley fans, "Time Warp" challenger Steve, and to North Shore Animal League ... for saving kitties and puppies! It may be an emergency, but classroom instruments, The Roots, Madonna's hits, and more fun Rocky Horror Picture Show homework are definitely mandatory!
The burning questions about Looney Tunes (Like: is Tweety bird on Twitter?), and more, are answered by the Areu Sisters/Podcasters! Host Cristina Areu and Co-host/Researcher/Sister Sofia Areu also discover the looney things adults say with IG clips from an English-as-a-Second-Language comedian named Tetiana Okyar. Plus: the Areu sisters give shoutouts and thanks to the North Shore Animal League, the Chicago Latino Network, and the great Paul Sorvino with music and more. Happy New Year, everyone! As we dream and plan for an incredible year full of creativity, authenticity, and fun surprises, we're kicking off 2022 by *re-releasing* one of our most iconic episodes of all time: our conversation with the talented, beautiful, incomparable Stacey Aswad! From 2005 to 2021, Stacey J. Aswad graced Walt Disney World Resort television and now has a permanent place in our hearts. She is someone we have looked up to for years and getting to host her on ReDIScover was an absolute dream come true. In this episode, we, of course, talked so much about Disney. However, this conversation turned into a true heart-to-heart about all aspects of life. We discussed everything from living your truth, trusting yourself, following your instincts, dealing with crossroads in life, being your own best friend, and embodying fearlessness. All while sharing lots of laughs and going on some glorious tangents for you to enjoy! Stacey is a true "student of life" and she brought forth such knowledge and wisdom. We hope you learn as much as we did and take some inspiration with you moving forward into the new year (and beyond!). Thank you again, Stacey, for joining us, and thank you all for listening! Guest: Mike Arms is president and CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center. He started with the ASPCA in the late 1960s before spending 20 years with North Shore Animal League. Mike created the International Pet Adopt-a-thon and the Home 4 the Holidays adoption campaigns, as well as the Remember Me Thursday adoption awareness campaign. The Home 4 the Holidays campaign now includes more than 4,100 organization participants in more than 23 countries who have jointly adopted out more than 17 million pets since 1999. Main question: What innovative strategies has your shelter developed in light of the pandemic? Takeaways: * This is a lifesaving business. We need to use our brains as well as our hearts. * Take time to learn about the needs and desires of your staff and community. Innovative solutions (such as the Ani-meals program and accommodation for staff-members’ children, two examples Mike shared in this podcast) create loyalty in your team and your community. * Learn the interests of your donors. If you haven’t made that effort to understand what motivates them and what they are passionate about, you will miss opportunities to frame requests in ways that connect for them on multiple levels. This is the best way to develop meaningful and valuable relationships with major donors. * Home 4 the Holidays is a free holiday adoption promotion campaign that has helped thousands of organizations find homes for more pets during the holiday season. Check it out to see if it may be a good fit for your organization. Now that the contract has been finalized, Benji now serves Kamat, the Ancient Black Dragon! His first order is to hunt down a Lamia, a half snake, half human monster, whom is a general for Nualia! Kamat allowed the party to gather some items, and granted some mental protection to remain hidden from the roving mind hunters in the depths. But the party's mind must remain focused, but there is many things running through their minds! Is Nualia close to finalizing her plan, what can they do about the burning of the sin-stones, what other hazards will they face along the way?! Will they remain undetected, or will their cluttered mind give them away! Stay tuned for the next episode of Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gamed! Gillian Kocher, Director of Public Relations for the Pennsylvania SPCA checks in with Kristen about a recent rescue of over 100 cats, and an adoption event THIS weekend to help clear the shelters so that these babes can be cared for, and eventually find their furr-ever homes too. It’s kitten season…. during a pandemic. The shelter is already very full, and yet the PSPCA also just rescued over 100 cats from a hoarding situation. There are so many great cats waiting to go home with you, and this weekend is a great opportunity to come meet your new housemate in PURR-son at Philadelphia Brewing Company. The PSPCA has partnered with North Shore Animal League of America who has generously lent their mobile adoption unit for the event. Swiffer has also offered to include this event in their ‘Adoption Sweep’, sponsoring $50 off adoption fees for 50 approved adopters. Head to Philadelphia Brewing Company from 12-5pm Saturday, June 27th, and again from 12-5pm on Sunday, June 28th. PBC has a newly expanded beautiful beer garden set up for social distancing, while serving up their special ‘Working Cat Pale Ale’, an ode to @dukethebrewerycat (who basically runs the place). Join the PSPCA, North Shore Animal League of America, and PBC for a great beer event while saving lives - or cat event while drinking beer. Whichever. Thanks to Swiffer for their sponsorship too!
On today’s show, I’m joined by Dr Sara Pizano. Sara is a Cornell Graduate and leading light in shelter medicine who has brought about enormous positive change to shelters across America. After university, she completed an internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York in 1995 and was subsequently hired by North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, New York where her shelter medicine adventure began. In 1998 Sarah was recruited as director of the Humane Society of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale and in 2005 she was appointed the Director of Miami-Dade Animal Services in Miami, Florida. During her tenure, she attracted hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding, nearly tripled the adoption rate and pretty much rewrote the Animal Services County Code! In 2013 she joined 'Target Zero' as program director and was instrumental in creating and developing a new model to transform high euthanasia public shelters. In the course of her work, she visited and mentored multiple shelters around the country resulting in a drop of nearly 50,000 animal euthanasias in just 18 of those shelters alone. In an effort to offer a wider scope of services to help shelters of all types and sizes she created Team Shelter USA in 2017, where her goal is for all animal welfare organizations to have access to her life saving practices. Dr. Pizano is the author of The Best Practice Playbook for Animal Shelters and leads the assessment and mentorship program at Maddie’s Shelter Medicine, University of Florida. She has received multiple awards and is a board member of the Companion Animal Advisory Council and the Humane Society of the United States. Now, just before we jump into the episode, a quick word from today’s show sponsor which today is the VetX:Thrive. If you are working in practice and clients or colleagues are making you miserable then I have good news and bad news. The bad news is you are probably the source of your problems. The good news is that you are also 100% in control of changing things and having a great career. You are missing some skills and they are NOT clinical. Enter VetX:THRIVE. VetX is a RACE accredited non-clinical skills training course where members receive training, toolkits and mentoring support to support development of these skills. Paul, one of the community members says joining was the best decision of his life and went from being miserable to being energised and happy in his work. Membership is available for a small monthly fee where you can join hundreds of other vets who have changed their careers for the better. To learn more and find out if the class is a good fit for you visit www.drdavenicol.com/vetxthrive today. Now back to the show, In a sector of veterinary medicine which can seem bleak, Dr Pizano’s work offers not just a glimmer of hope, but a well-lit path to a future where animals that can find homes, do find homes. I was engrossed and I learned so much about the incredible and often unsung work Sara and all the heroes in shelter medicine undertake each day. I hope you also enjoy this eye-opening conversation with the inspirational Dr Sara Pizano.
