When we consider what it takes to improve the health of rural Americans and address rural health disparities, there's no one size fits all solution. Because, as the saying goes, if you've seen one rural community, you've seen one rural community.   In our latest podcast series, we are digging into rural health: the challenges, and the opportunities. We're highlighting the diversity of rural communities and addressing common misconceptions..   In today's episode, Health Disparities podcast host Sarah Hohman checks in with three people who work in rural hospital leadership and administration, doing incredibly important work, often with limited resources:   Michael Calhoun, Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director for Citizens Memorial Healthcare, an integrated healthcare system serving over 130,000 residents in southwest Missouri.  Mandy Shelast, the  President of Marshfield Clinic Health System's Michigan and Southern Regions, and the President of the National Association of Rural Health Clinics. Dr. John Bartlett, a practicing primary care physician and the Vice President of Medical Affairs for the Michigan Region of Marshfield Clinic.   Some of the biggest challenges are related to the health care workforce and staffing, in particular for specialty care. “If we lose a chemo nurse in a town of 10,000 there's not five other ones looking for that job,” Bartlett says.  “What I'm concerned about is just our aging population and how we're going to be able to train a workforce enough to be able to care for all the people that need it, that's a real concern,” Calhoun says.  All three guests addressed common misconceptions about rural America, and emphasized the benefits of rural, including a slower pace of life and having providers who are passionate about the mission of providing excellent, personalized health care. “The patients that we care for are our friends and our family and our community members,” Shelast says. “We take care of them on the very best days of their life — maybe when they're welcoming a life into the world — and on the worst days, when they're having a medical emergency or they've received a terminal diagnosis, and it is just such a great experience to be able to go up to that person and say, 'I'm here for you.'” Never miss an episode – be sure to subscribe to The Health Disparities podcast from Movement Is Life on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/615  Presented by: Skwala, TroutRoutes, Togiak River Lodge, Visit Helena, MT Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors  In today's episode, Drew Evans of The Fly Project walks us through their buzzing Carp Clave event. Drew will share his top three carp fishing tips, including the legendary drag-and-drop technique you don't want to miss. Plus, he'll dive into the must-have gear for the season and give us the scoop on spotting carp in those tricky river flats. And if that's not enough, get ready to be hooked by tales of fish camps and exotic fishing trips to places like Belize! Episode Chapters with Drew Evans on the Carp Clave 3:11 - Drew describes the Carp Clave event as possibly the first of its kind, aiming to educate and introduce more people to carp fishing, which traditional trout fishermen often overlook. It was held in Boardman, Oregon, a location chosen for its abundant flats and carp. 7:18 - Drew explains that the Carp Clave highlights the parallels between flats fishing, typically a saltwater technique, and carp fishing in shallow waters across the United States and even globally. 8:55 - He walks us through the event. He mentions Dick Sagara and a few more of the huge supporters of the event and the vendors and brands that were there. 18:20 - Drew explains that House of Fly is where he works. They offer a comprehensive range of fly fishing gear, from saltwater equipment to small creek necessities, carrying well-known brands like Echo, Sage, and Winston. 20:51 - We talk about his home river. For steelhead, he goes to Clearwater, Idaho. He also targets salmon and smallmouth bass. 25:01 - Drew explains that spring brings challenges like weather fronts and strong winds, which can affect water clarity essential for flat-style fishing. Despite potential visibility issues, carp can still be targeted due to their bright appearance, especially against sandy bottoms. He emphasizes the importance of identifying the fish's orientation to place the fly correctly. 28:04 - We dig into the gear for fishing in the Boardman area of the Columbia River for successful fishing during April. He emphasizes the importance of having a rod with a good backbone, suggesting an eight-weight rod as ideal. This rod size is versatile for different types of fish, including redfish, bonefish, permit, pike, smallmouth bass, and carp. 29:06 - He highlights the importance of selecting lines that can handle wind and varying temperatures. He recommends saltwater tapers, especially the Rio Outbound short for cold conditions and the SA Grand Slam or redfish taper for warmer conditions. 31:18 - Drew typically uses a long leader, around 12 to 13 feet, particularly when dealing with spooky fish. To counterbalance the long leader and ensure the fly sinks faster, he uses a heavier fly and often opts for a fluorocarbon tippet, ranging from 12 to 16 pounds. He mentions specific products like the redfish leaders from SA or Rio, which he finds particularly effective. 32:15 - He notes that anything from sizes 8 to 4 can be effective for the flies. He mentions the importance of having a variety of flies with different weights, from light bead chain eyes to medium dumbbell eyes, to adapt to different water depths. He highlights a particular fly, the hybrid carp fly created by John Bartlett, which has proven highly effective in carp fishing. 37:28 - Drew gives us three reasons to try carp fishing. He points out the accessibility of it, as it doesn't require long drives like trout fishing. He also mentions the practice it provides for saltwater fishing and the conservation benefits, as carp can be fished in hot weather when other fish are less active. It also offers a thrilling, challenging experience. 41:16 - He talks about the strategies for finding and not spooking carp while fishing. He emphasizes the importance of locating shallow water areas that can accommodate multiple fish. Drew also points out the value of patience, mentioning that if carp have been seen in a particular flat before, they are likely to return. 47:09 - Drew gives some strategies for catching carp, particularly for those who may not have had much success. He advises anglers to lengthen their leader and practice the "drag and drop" technique to avoid spooking the fish. He emphasizes that casting directly at the fish can scare them away, so it's better to be subtle with the approach. 50:32 - We talk about conservation. Drew highlights his involvement with Trout Unlimited and the Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) chapters at WFSU and the University of Idaho, working with dedicated groups of students. 52:13 - I ask about his preference for music. He enjoys a variety of music genres, from hardcore punk and death metal in his youth to more mellow indie and new country music as he has aged. He mentions that Black Flag is his favorite band of all time. He also listens to many podcasts, including Joe Rogan's show and "99% Invisible." 53:56 - For beginners, Drew emphasizes the importance of patience, noting that fly fishing is inherently challenging and not something one can master quickly. 1:01:00 - Drew shares about their fish camps in Belize. It's a five-day guided trip where participants can have an opportunity to fish for bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/615

John Dorney and Tom Salinsky from Best Pick podcast join Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Nyad. Nyad (2023) is a biographical sports drama based on swimmer Diana Nyad's life and her book Find a Way: The Inspiring Story of One Woman's Pursuit of a Lifelong Dream. It stars Annette Bening as Diana and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, Diana's best friend and trainer. Rhys Ifans also stars as John Bartlett, the navigator of her support ship. The film follows Diana as she attempts to complete the 110-mile nonstop swim from Cuba to Florida that has eluded her since 1978. In 2011, at the age of 60 Diana makes the first of many attempts to complete the journey. Nyad follows a standard sports biopic template, except there are big questions about the validity of her completed swim. Not only is the main swim potentially not 100% accurate, some of the major moments in the Nyad completely fictional. There was no shark! Recommendability scores for Nyad were firmly floating around the threes, not a bad film but also not an especially exciting or remarkable one. Everyone was in agreement that it is also a good film to watch while doing a task, so not particularly high on engagement, which gives an overall score of 2.70. When Chileans were asked in a referendum in 2020 whether they wanted a new constitution, the response was overwhelming. The current one dated back to the rule of Augusto Pinochet, the military dictator who had stepped down more than three decades earlier. Nearly eighty percent of the population voted in favor of a negotiation that would lead to a new charter for the country. But the negotiation process—which included representatives from the left and right side of the political map, along with dozens of independents—was rocky from the start. Delegates introduced many lofty ideas but the actual give-and-take required to produce a consensus was missing. Voters rejected a draft of the new constitution in September—by a large margin. This week on our podcast, The Negotiators, we examine what went wrong, with the help of John Bartlett, a reporter based in Santiago, Chile. 2919 - Jackson Water Crisis; Chile Constitution Reform Fails w/ John Bartlett & Nsombi Lambright

Sam and Emma host journalist John Bartlett to discuss the recent constitutional referendum in Chile. Then, they are joined by Nsombi Lambright, executive director of OneVoiceMS, to discuss the recent water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi's capital city. They begin by diving into updates on the Mar-a-Lago raid, the Seattle teacher strike, Texas and South Carolina abortion bans, a Texas judge deciding requiring HIV medical care is unconstitutional, and the state of climate catastrophe that we find ourselves in, before watching Jackson Hinkle and Tucker Carlson explore the Jews behind the Nazis behind Joe Biden's fascist lighting. John Bartlett joins, diving right into the results of Chile's constitutional referendum, with the constitution – a rewrite of the binding legislation of Pinochet's dictatorial regime – failing by a wide margin, before jumping back to Pinochet's coup that supplied the first failing constitution, walking through the hyper-privatization and rejection of indigenous communities that framed this quintessential neoliberal shock doctrine document. Next, he, Emma, and Sam walk through the recent social uprising that lead to the rewriting of the document, starting in 2019 after protests saw overwhelming support among Chileans for a new constitutional convention, and slowly developing over the last three years. Bartlett then dives into what elements led this new, rather progressive constitution to fail, parsing through the social welfare policies and emphasis on gender parity and indigenous rights, before exploring the greater systemic changes in their legislative and judicial wings. Wrapping up, they cover the overarching theme of mis- and disinformation around the constitutional campaign and explore the role of industry (particularly the already privatized variety) in the pushback. Then, Nsombi Lambright joins in the wake of a meeting with the federal EPA, jumping right into where the federal government is at with intervening in the Jackson, Mississippi water crisis, before situating where the city is at, having recently gotten running water back but still lacking potability. Lambright, Sam, and Emma then explore the lasting impact of the austerity measures of the Reagan era on Jackson, looking at the mass disinvestment from public infrastructure combined with white-flight seeing business and recreation vanishing from the city, leaving it to slowly disintegrate over the last three decades, with the city only able to slap the occasional bandage on it. They conclude the interview by exploring what Jackson is trying to do right now, as the Mississippi governor attempts to set up his own shock-doctrine implementation of privatized infrastructure, and what those outside of Mississippi can do to help. And in the Fun Half: Ronald Raygun has a quick check-in with a certain commenter in defense of John from San Antonio before Anarcho-Capitalist Mike from Liberty 412 calls in as he debates with Sam and Emma on all things libertarian, walking through the absurdity of private courts, presuming a constant non-aggression principle, and much more. They also touch on Donald Trump's (former) lawyer Alina Habba and Trump's “invisible” documents, and reflect on the industry-shifting debut of the  E-S-V-N podcast.
