Two guests are in the studio this month! Jana Carson, professional photographer for the Oklahoma City Ballet, and Abby Hudgins, ballet instructor, mom and former pro dancer, chatted with me about founding Ballerinas by Night, a support community that provides resources for adults who are beginning or continuing their dance education. Both have been dancing since they were kids but took a break before re-connecting with ballet in adulthood. We talk about what that was like, how they decided it was time for a break, and ultimately, what led them back to ballet. A few tears were shed as we reflected on how important friendships and communities are in the dance world, and we talked about how dancers can work through barriers to entry in ballet like body image, financial challenges, competition, and physical demands. This is an unusual episode: two artists discuss beauty. What it is, how to create it, and why we need it to make life worthwhile. This far-ranging conversation is mediative and thought-provoking, just like Abby and Molly.Abby Herrick is a senior in college studying to be a teacher. She is an outstanding playwright, and I interviewed her about two of her plays—and a hilarious speech that she wrote—on a previous episode.Molly Cook dances with the Oklahoma City Ballet. In fact, Molly has been a trained dancer literally her whole life since age three; she has trained for nineteen years, and is now a professional!(This episode was recorded July 15, 2021.)
Today's guest is Pacific Northwest Ballet Soloist, Jonathan Batista! Jonathan started his training at a social project in Rio de Janeiro's City of God slums. His talent was then spotted by his teacher which took him to a pre-professional dance division at Alice Arja Ballet School where he started his journey in Classical Ballet. I won't spoil the story about how Batista went from this humble beginning to performing all over the world – he shares this wonderful story in our conversation – but I will tell you that during 2017-2021 he has performed with Oklahoma City Ballet as a Principal Dancer. Whilst with the company, Jonathan created two world premieres, winning ‘Best Choreography of the Year' by the National Destined 2 Dancer Award and in 2021 he won the ‘Art Culture & Music Award' by the TAF AWARD FOUNDATION for his contributions in representation, activism, work and contributions to the dance community in Oklahoma. In this conversation we cover growing up in Brasil, the importance of having an entrepreneurial spirit if you're going to have a successful career as a dancer and most notable his mission to create more diversity, equity and inclusion in the dance world. Batista is a man with a mission and like all humans who want to make a difference in this world, he is incredibly focussed, driven and organised. We cover his insane morning routine and disciplined practices – but of course there's some balance in there too… I really loved chatting to Jonathan, in fact when recording was done we spent another few minutes sharing diary recommendations and organisation tips! I have a feeling we're cut from the same cloth… I wish Jonathan all the success in the world and would like to thank him for carving out some precious time to share his story with the Balanced Ballerinas community. As always you can find me on Instagram @thebalancedballerina and you can find Jonathan @jonathanbatistaofficial – I love when people actually comment on the latest podcast tile on the official @balancedballerinas account, so come say hello and let us know what you enjoyed in this episode. This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Ryan Jolicoeur-Nye, Ballet Master at the Oklahoma City Ballet. Originally from central Maine, Ryan began his training at the age of 16. During his run as a professional dancer, he danced for ballet companies across the continent and with some of the most sought-after choreographers in the industry. Most recently, Jolicoeur-Nye left his position as Artistic Director of the NWA Ballet Theatre. Now, he and his wife both hold leadership roles at the Oklahoma City Ballet. On top of all of this, Ryan is an award-winning choreographer, who has created numerous works for a variety of major ballet companies. At this point in his career, Ryan has held a wide variety of roles in arts leadership, and, on the podcast, he discusses a wide variety of topics, including changes he’d like to see happen in the ballet world, what is inhibiting innovation in the United States, and how to find and act upon one’s passions. Ryan also explains his perspective on what he believes is most important for young dancers looking to break into the ballet industry, which may not be what you’re expecting. Moving Quotes: "As a director, the value that I place on my ability to work with someone that is positive and enthusiastic in the studio sometimes outweighs physical talent... Your openness can carry you through your entire career." "You can learn the technical things. You can't learn the passion." "Where I don't see a pathway, I try to create one." "We're not missing passion; we're just missing a willingness to take the risk. As a society, that's something we should be more willing to help people pursue." "Every artistic director wants something different. Your job [as a dancer] is to give whichever version they want." "Perhaps performing arts needs to move a bit more in the direction of [technological innovation] ... Creating really brilliant feature films that can live on. The valuable thing about performing arts is that it has one life — you see it on stage, and it will never be the same again. So, there's value in that. But when we're given a [global pandemic], we must move in the direction of virtual creativity with real production value." "Education should train students for the real-life workforce — for what artistic directors are looking for in a dancer. And I would say, primarily, the answer is versatility." "In this business, everyone is in your life for a season because dancers move around so often. You get so many different experiences with lots of different people and cultures. That's been a huge guiding force for me in developing myself as a leader, choreographer, and artists." "A huge challenge that we've faced with dance in the past is getting stuck on the 'right' or 'wrong' ways to do things." "What we have in the United States is a network of companies that produce the same tapestry of work over and over. So, we're behind the world in innovation and creativity." Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 2:00: Ryan talks about his move from the NWA Ballet Theatre to the Oklahoma City Ballet and his vision for his new company. 4:55: Ryan discusses his ideas behind changing ballet company norms, including shifting traditional contract terms to give dancers more security. 8:11: Ryan describes a flaw in the United States dance and arts sectors which paralyzes many companies from doing truly innovative work. 13:30: Jolicoeur-Nye discusses the most important thing that can be taught to students as a part of dance education. 15:33: Ryan explains what he believes is the most marketable skill for dance students that are looking to break into the industry. 18:42: Ryan discusses his thoughts on whether or not dance teachers should be required to obtain certifications to teach dance classes. 21:01: Ryan describes his personal role models and speaks to the importance of learning from peers as you move from company to company. 24:27: Jolicoeur-Nye explains how to properly adjust to change in a dance career where one may essentially operate as a nomad, moving locations from season to season. 27:58: Ryan discusses the nature of personal passion and how to take action on that which you’re passionate about. 30:03: Ryan shares the story of how he got started in ballet and pushed through adversity to ultimately become what he is today. From an outsiders perspective, you can't help but admire a dancer's grace and effortlessness. However, if only people knew what was actually going on in that dancer's mind... "That was horrible. I'm an awful turner. I'm never going to be good at that step." Many dancer's struggle with a negative mindset, and yet we fail to understand how these thoughts really cost us and actually limit our dancing. But combating these negative thoughts is exactly where Kirsten Kemp thrives. Jenna Kantor Born in Petaluma, California, Jenna Kantor entertained her parents and dinner guests by improvising dance routines to classical music in the living room. To feed this hunger to perform after dinner, her mother signed her up for ballet lessons at the age of five. While this craving to dance was fed, she expressed herself vocally throughout her home singing her one-woman version of West Side Story. “I Feel Pretty” and “Officer Krupke” were a few of her preferred selections to belt out at a moments notice. It wasn't until Jenna attended the University of California, Irvine, she found herself pulled towards musical theatre. She took a risk with the song “Nobody Does It Like Me” and continued to use that risk to book her first show playing Miss Thorn in the hit musical “Ruthless.” Already a dancer, Jenna Kantor worked hard in both her vocal and dramatic performances to grow into a strong triple threat. In order to build her resume and experience during college, she continued her journey performing in professional musical productions throughout Orange County, California. After graduating with a BA in drama and a BA in dance, Jenna headed for New York and booked her first gig with Disney Cruise Line. She remains grateful for her continuous work in inspiring musical productions throughout the US and strives to pass on the inspiration to future performers.
