ARRIVAL: The SECRETS of a CLASSIC Sci-Fi Movie!

Does It Fly?

“Incomprehensible guttural noises”The HeptapodsArrival is as difficult a movie to discuss in the limited space of our show notes as it is a truly great work of modern science fiction filmmaking. It's also virtually impossible to discuss without spoilers. Heck, we had trouble cramming our discussion of the central concepts of the film into  One of director Denis Villeneuve's crowning cinematic achievements (and almost certainly the thing that made us all realize that he might be the only director who would be able to get Dune right on screen), Arrival is an alien invasion movie unlike any other, one in which the humans don't cope with our new and strange looking neighbors with aggression, but rather by using science and reasoning to understand and communicate with them. Imagine that! You might fancy yourself a wiseacre and suggest the very notion of science and reasoning “does not fly” given the state of the world these days, but let's set that cynicism aside for the moment and get at the heart of this week's topic. Because in order to understand the way these aliens (the heptapods, not to be confused with Hakeem's ongoing Planet of the Cephalopods pitch) communicate via bizarre and smoky glyphs, humans are able to change their perception of time itself. You've heard of “perception determines reality” so get ready for “language affects perception which thus helps determine reality.” And if that sounds confusing, don't worry, because you've got Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to hold your smoky hand (limb?) and walk you through it (forwards, backwards, and perhaps both at once). All of this and more is explored on a special, extra-sized episode of Does it Fly?...https://youtu.be/K_Duabt4f1s?si=9MGhHmj22EatyFQ8SUGGESTED VIEWING You mean you haven't seen Arrival? And you're watching and/or listening to this show? What's wrong with you! Go watch one of the most beautiful sci-fi movies of the last 25 years and THEN come back and hang out with us.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!Story of Your LifeArrival is based on a short story by Ted Chiang, called “Story of Your Life” which won the 1999 Hugo Award for Best Novella. It's available in a collection of Chiang's short stories, Stories of Your Life and Others.Relativity in ArrivalAlso known as the Sapir-Worf Hypothesis, based on the work of Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, but actually first stated as such Harry Hoijer in 1954. To quote Hoijer (via the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy who have the most comprehensive explanation of this that we've been able to find): “language functions, not simply as a device for reporting experience, but also, and more significantly, as a way of defining experience for its speakers.” Arrival takes that to the next level by showing how it could define how we experience time itself! It also incorporates elements of the Many-Worlds theory, which we discussed in our Back to the Future episode! For extra credit, read up on Presentism, which postulates that only the current moment we live in is actual existence vs Eternalism, which states that our past AND future are equally real at all times. Then go take an Advil or something. The End of TimeNo, we're not talking about whatever horrors have you doomscrolling at the moment. It's Julian Barbour's book The End of Time: The Next Revolution in Our Understanding of the Universe, which argues that time as we know/perceive it, isn't really a thing.Speaking of time being an illusion…PsilocybinWe aren't endorsing anything, but…WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Speaking of some of the greatest sci-fi movies of the 21st Century, we'd like to remind you that Children of Men also exists and we dug into the disturbing real world implications of that movie right here.Andor season 2 is currently reminding people how good Star Wars can be when it actually has a conscience, so we took a look at the Star Wars franchise's most powerful and iconic megaweapon, the Death Star in one of our best episodes ever! FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! STAR WARS: How Much Would a DEATH STAR Actually COST?!?

Does It Fly?

“Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battlestation!”Emperor Palpatine, shortly before nothing goes wrong for him whatsoever.Say it with us, “that's no moon…that's a space station.” One of the most quotable lines in the Star Wars saga actually tells you quite a bit about the central threat of the original film (now officially known as Episode IV: A New Hope but to anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s, it will forever be known simply as Star Wars). The Death Star, the Empire's ultimate planet-destroying superweapon is the size of a small moon (or a large asteroid, as we'll get to in the episode) but is actually a mobile space station that can house and deploy thousands of troops, hundreds of small ships, and packs enough firepower to turn your home planet into multiple orders of space McNuggets. You'd probably assume that something like the Death Star would be completely out of the realm of scientific plausibility. And you might also make assumptions about the story logic or the vibes of the Death Star, especially since the entire Star Wars franchise essentially lives or dies by its vibes. Unlike, say, Star Trek (please don't make assumptions that we are biased simply because this is a Roddenberry production), which tries to lean heavily on the “science” part of science fiction, the Star Wars brand of sci-fi has always had a healthy dose of fantasy. Fortunately, we have Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to explain how it all works for you…and also how much it might cost to actually build one of these things. We took a look at the entire history of the Death Star, from what we see in Episode IV, Return of the Jedi, the “Starkiller Base” evolution in The Force Awakens, and even the gritty military realism of Andor and Rogue One to find our answers, which might just surprise you.Don't believe us? (“That…is why you fail!”) Well, padawans, watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here and you might just be surprised at what we found!Watch the video version here:https://youtu.be/aE4vkGo-QfkSUGGESTED VIEWING Everything you really need to know about the Death Star (but were afraid to ask) is pretty much contained in Episode IV: A New Hope (we're still calling it Star Wars), Return of the Jedi, and the truly great Rogue One. But it's worth checking out The Force Awakens to see how the Death Star evolved into Starkiller Base. And while Rogue One prequel, Andor on Disney Plus has yet to tap into Death Star mythology…you really, really, really need to be watching that show. But Tamara also recommends the original The Making of Star Wars documentary which has some wonderful looks at how the movie magic of the Death Star was pulled off. Track it down!Tamara also points out a couple of classic war movies that were key inspirations for George Lucas for the assault on the Death Star: 1955's The Dam Busters and 1964's 633 Squadron.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!MimasNo, not orange juice and prosecco! Saturn's seventh largest moon does look suspiciously like the Death Star, doesn't it? It's also about 1/10th the size of The Moon, which makes it much closer in actual size to the Death Star.Asteroid PsycheGiven the absurd cost it would take to actually build a Death Star, we're going to need to raise some capital. Fortunately, there's an asteroid in our solar system that may be composed entirely of materials “worth more than the entire world economy.”Dyson SpheresIn case you're wondering what it would take to power something like a Death Star, let's start with a Dyson Sphere, which could potentially channel the power of an entire sun. Hey, if you're looking to blow up a planet, do it right. Do they exist? Maybe! It Costs HOW Much?Never mind the price of steel and other building materials, get a load of how much firing a weapons grade laser costs. Now imagine that multiplied by how much it would take to destroy a planet! How Star Wars Almost Didn't Happen“I believe it was said at the time that no science fiction picture grossed more than $10 million dollars, and no picture with War in the title ever grossed more than six or seven million. So the idea of a sci-fi film with War in the title was a pretty deadly combination.”The article that Tamara quotes from can be found in full here, and it's full of fascinating info!Operation Plumbbob We can't explain it any better than the Atomic Heritage Foundation: “Operation Plumbbob was a series of 29 nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. military between May 28 and October 7, 1957, at the Nevada Test Site. It was one of the longest and most comprehensive test series in the continental United States, and became controversial after much of the operation was declassified. There were several objectives during Operation Plumbbob, including improving tactical weapon design, conducting bio-medical experiments, safety testing, and component and design testing for thermonuclear systems to be detonated in future operations.”They've got some pretty amazing videos of this as well.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We've tackled Star Wars concepts before, so check out our episode on lightsabers right here! The new season of HBO's The Last of Us is currently giving everyone nightmares, so we told you why you maybe (?) shouldn't worry too much…for now.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! RoboCop may be “the future of law enforcement” but he might also be much closer to reality than anyone ever dreamed or feared. Join us as we unpack this classic 1987 movie and the central concept that drives it.“Come quietly or there will be…trouble.”Officer Alex J. Murphy (R.I.P.)This episode of Does it Fly? is brought to you by our friends at Omni Consumer Products, who would like to encourage you to visit beautiful Delta City, Michigan, America's safest place to live…or else!Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop (1987) is genuinely one of the finest science fiction films of the 1980s. Its unique blend of biting satire and over-the-top violence and gore set it apart from the endless parade of Reagan-era hyper violent action movies and the unique “media breaks” and corporate culture feel remarkably (perhaps disturbingly prescient) almost 40 years after release. Hell, we might even argue that the cynical vision of the future on display in RoboCop was too optimistic given the state of the world these days, but that's neither here nor there.Because the central conceit of RoboCop, using cybernetics to enhance a human for the specific purpose of perfecting law enforcement, may have seemed like the stuff of science fiction in 1987, but it's a little closer to the realm of science fact today. Just how close is another story, but that's for our hosts, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky, to decide. With that in mind, we'd like to remind everyone of the Prime Directives of our show (not to be confused with Starfleet General Order 1…we are a Roddenberry Entertainment production, after all):Explain the Science of RoboCopUnpack the Story Logic of RoboCopDiscuss the Vibes and Questions that RoboCop RaisesUphold the Law(Wait, no! That last one isn't ours).Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? for the answers to these questions and more!https://youtu.be/uBbq29Tu7_cSUGGESTED VIEWING The RoboCop franchise is…well, let's pretend that it isn't a franchise. There is one perfect movie from director Paul Verhoeven and then there are fainter and fainter echoes in the form of two big screen sequels (and one reboot), a pair of live action TV series, one average (if bizarre) animated series and one truly unwatchable one. Seriously, the 1987 movie is an all-time genre classic and is not to be missed, and that's the crux of our discussion in this episode. But there's also a truly amazing four part documentary about the making of that film called, appropriately, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop, which somehow manages to be every bit as compelling as the movie itself. Highly recommended for those who want to get an almost Tamara-like deep knowledge of this brilliant film.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Future of Law EnforcementTo build a cybernetic police officer, you require three key ingredients: powered exoskeletons, general robotics, and BCIs (brain-computer interfaces). All of these are pretty broad subjects, but the links will take you to what we believe are the easiest (and coolest!) overviews for the layperson.Robot Police Dogs“Woof, woof, you #@&*$!” Ted TalkMy Stroke of InsightGiven how much of Robo's origin story revolves around a traumatic brain injury and his essential recovery from that, Tamara recommends My Stroke of Insight, which you can find anywhere, but we recommend purchasing from here if you can.“OCP Runs the Cops!”We also recommend Radley Balko's Rise of the Warrior Cop for further insight on the militarization of police. It was written back in 2013 but like RoboCop, it's still incredibly relevant today.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For a more recent take on a sci-fi dystopia, allow us to recommend our Squid Game episode!Just for comparison with another hero who uses robotics and cybernetics, we took a look at the science of Iron Man, as well!FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Is Star Trek's Transporter Really Possible?!?

Does It Fly?

We explore the rules of one of the greatest innovations in sci-fi history, Star Trek's transporter! We also ask the big question: could this iconic science fiction technology become a science reality in our lifetimes? EPISODE SUMMARY One of the most iconic pieces of Star Trek technology! By converting matter into energy, objects and living beings can be “beamed” across great distances, where they are then re-converted back into physical matter. Not just a clever way to not require Starfleet away teams to have to jump in an expensive shuttlecraft every time they need to get back and forth from a starship, but a concept instantly recognizable as uniquely Star Trek, one which has the power to make or break a mission and that has been the focus of multiple stories in the franchise's history. Noted astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi and pop culture expert Tamara Krinsky break it all down to see what it takes to, well, break down a living person and reassemble them at another location. From a science perspective, Hakeem tackles both the scientific feasibility of converting matter into energy and (perhaps infinitely trickier) then converting the energy back into solid matter. Is there any existing technology analogous to this? Is it possible to even consider that this could be done to a living being without killing them? What about real world parallels with concepts such as quantum teleportation? And just how much data storage do you need in order to make this happen?Meanwhile, Tamara looks at this incredibly reliable piece of fictional Star Trek technology from a story standpoint. What happens to someone's soul (or, at least their consciousness) when their atoms are disassembled and reassembled elsewhere? What about Dr. McCoy's well noted objections every time he steps on a transporter pad? Are McCoy's fears as commonplace to a 23rd century citizen as a fear of flying is for people of today? All this and more in our first episode! Don't forget you can also join the conversation in the comments on our YouTube page, so be sure to like and subscribe!FURTHER READINGWant to dive a little deeper into the scientific concepts Hakeem touched on in today's episode?Quantum Teleportation  “There is something that works in the real universe, and it's called quantum teleportation, but it's not [the transporter].”Avogadro's Number“If you want to take a guess at how many atoms are in this cup or in this microphone, you start with Avogadro's number.” Moore's Law“Here on Earth, we have this thing called Moore's Law, and that has to do with the growth of processor speed, but I think there might be something similar for the growth of data storage.”The Hebbian Learning Rule“That's the big one for me. How do you handle memory? Because as the saying goes, ‘neurons that fire together, wire together.'”Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle“There's this thing called Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, so [with the transporter] you can't get both their motion and their location to arbitrary-precision…”And for those of you who want to learn more about the early days of Star Trek and the behind-the-scenes stories surrounding the creation of the transporter…The Making of Star Trek by Stephen E. Whitfield and Gene RoddenberryOne  of the foundational Star Trek texts, and one that Tamara referred to when researching today's episode. “Movie and TV-making technology at that time, making models and miniatures was pretty much how that was accomplished on screen, and it was really expensive. So if you were going to have a show every week where you had to bring a crew down in a shuttle or some kind of spaceship, that was going to be really expensive for the budget of the show. But it's a basic premise, so you're gonna have to figure out how to do it every week…you've only got a certain amount of time to tell your story and you want to use those most efficiently and most powerfully.” These Are The Voyages, TOS Season One by Marc Cushman and Susan OsborneThe Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek - The First 25 Years by Ed Gross and Mark A. AltmanSUGGESTED VIEWINGAs the transporter factors into virtually every single episode of Star Trek, it's tough to narrow it down, but here's a selection of episodes that helped inform the discussion of today's episode.Star Trek: The Original Series S1E5 “The Enemy Within”The original “uh-oh, the transporter is being weird” episode, as Captain Kirk finds himself split into two selves after a transporter malfunction. Star Trek: The Original Series S2E4 “Mirror, Mirror”A transporter malfunction causes Spock to grow a goatee! Well, really, it swaps the Enterprise crew with their malevolent doppelgangers from the soon-to-be-infamous Mirror Universe.Star Trek: The Next Generation S2E7 “Unnatural Selection”Ever wonder if the transporter could be used as a medical tool? This is the episode for you!Star Trek: The Next Generation S5E15 “Power Play”Ever wonder if the transporter could be used as a way to hold non-corporeal beings captive? Of course you have! Who hasn't?Star Trek: The Next Generation S6E2 “Realm of Fear”A fine example of the basis for transporter-phobia, and perhaps the only depiction of the process of transporting through the eyes of the person being transported.Star Trek: The Next Generation S6E4 “Relics”The transporter is used to hold a familiar character from Trek history in stasis for many years.Star Trek: The Next Generation S6E24 “Second Chances”As shown in our episode, a transporter accident creates a clone of William Riker. Awkwardness ensues!Star Trek: Enterprise S2E10 “Vanishing Point”A crewmember thinks she is starting to dematerialize after going through the transporter for the first time. Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week on the podcast it's flashback February. Inspired by last year's Black History Month compilation episode (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/163), for this week, also dedicated to Black History Month, I've selected glocally speaking, mindset hacking and solution-scaping excerpts from conversations over the past year. Starting with the Science Mercenary, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/hakeem-oluseyi) on how reconceptualizing our ideas on time and how the evolutionary continuum of human intelligence need not be as complicated as we think. Cognitive-Behavioral Research Scientist, Dr. Juleen Christopher (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/juleen-christopher) reinforces his thoughts by introducing us to her mindset hack, a technique called positive intelligence and how a commitment to telling ourselves and living a story contrary to those embedded in social injustice are at the bedrock of her activism. Cultural practitioner, Kobby Graham (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/kobby-graham) furthers the story as he elaborates on his mindset hack - collaboration and how its revival in the African psyche is critical to progress. Communication specialist and cultural curator, Samba Yonga (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/sambe-yonga) then illustrates how our African histories reinforce this collaborative ethic and is using her museum as the narrative activism necessary to reinform a new now. Finally, glocally speaking, the Money Maker, Eric Collins (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/eric-collins), puts his money where his mouth is investing in the change that he and his partners at Impact X Capital intend to see in black communities across Europe. The common thread in my selections is activism which is the why of Black History Month. Waking each morning in parts of the world rife with injustice is itself an act of courageous resistance. We must challenge ourselves to uplift untold stories and unheard voices, so that by valuing global Black histories, we can collectively build, simply put, a better today. That is the definition of Glocal Citizenship. Visit the links above for full episodes and extended show notes. Special Guests: Eric Collins, Hakeem Oluseyi , Juleen Christopher, Kobina Ankomah Graham, and Samba Yonga.

I confess that Hakeem Oluseyi had not really risen on my radar screen until the last year or two. I was aware of the National Society of Black Physicists, having sometimes gotten notices about is meetings, but, being generally unsupportive of current efforts to compartmentalize scientists by their identity, I hadn't really paid much notice to it. Then, in one of those ironies that periodically makes one feel better about the vicissitudes of fortune, I learned more about him only after people had attempted to cancel him. When I read about Hakeem's brave and impressive campaign to uncover the truth about James Webb after a small but unduly loud group of physicists, whose actions seem to be centered about their mutually celebrated victimhood, argued that the James Webb Space Telescope should be renamed, my interest in him, along with my respect for him, rose considerably. Prompted by this newfound interest, I read a book he had co-authored, entitled, A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars, and I was fascinated by the remarkable transformation of a hillbilly turned drug dealer into an academic. Here was someone who could have reveled in begin a victim by lashing out in hate, but instead was inspired to improve himself and those around him. I decided I wanted to delve deeper into the man, his life, his science, and his recent unfortunate experiences while holding firm to the search for truth in a podcast. It was a fun, and fascinating few hours. Hakeem and I both like to joke as well as tell stories, and we are both serious about the effort to understand nature, and to share our enthusiasm about that effort. I hope the combination of our mutual enjoyment about life and science, along with learning about his own story will inspire, entertain and inform. I certainly enjoyed our discussion and I hope you will as well.As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. On the Lean Out podcast, we've talked a lot about the state of open debate in our society. The public conversation these days frequently involves highly contentious and nasty arguments — and science is no exception. Michael Powell at The New York Times recently reported out one such example, involving the naming of a telescope after a late NASA head, and allegations of homophobia. Several of the scientists behind the movement to rename the telescope have issued a statement since The New York Times piece came out, arguing that Powell “has attempted to transform a debate on the naming of JWST into one that raises ‘personal' issues involving Professor Oluseyi.” You can read that statement in full here.  Today, on the podcast, we'll hear from the astrophysicist at the centre of this controversy. Hakeem Oluseyi is the visiting Robinson Professor at George Mason University, and the president of the National Society of Black Physicists. He's also the author of A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars. You can find Tara Henley on Twitter at @TaraRHenley, and on Substack at tarahenley.substack.com

This is a replay of the discussion with Hakeem Oluseyi on the controversy surrounding the naming of the James Webb Space Telescope. It continues! Today the New York Time published an opinion piece entitled: How Naming the James Webb Telescope Turned Into a Fight Over Homophobia: Did the former head of NASA discriminate against gay people? One physicist tried to rebut the accusation, only to find himself the target of attacks. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/19/us/james-webb-telescope-gay-rights.html? The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is NASA's next great flagship observatory. It's set to continue — and extend — the illustrious scientific tradition established by the Hubble Space Telescope, while peering deeper into the universe and observing what Hubble could not. But who was James Webb? Considering the controversy surrounding his legacy, I wanted to explore the allegations against him with my friend Hakeem Oluseyi and answer the question: Why was the James Webb Space Telescope named after him? Hakeem claims that some allegations wrongly accused an innocent man who was, among more well-known achievements, a hero of diversity and inclusion in American government. Our Deceptive Universe - Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show.  As part of our Smithsonian  Associates Inside Science Interview Series, we are talking to Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi, about his amazing life as an astrophysicist, cosmologist, inventor, educator, science communicator, actor, and author of the new book, A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars You're going to love this interview, and Dr. Oluseyi's book is amazing.   Before Einstein published his theory of special relativity, Isaac Newton's view from centuries earlier was accepted as fact: that we live in a “clockwork universe” where time and space are constant. What Einstein first imagined, and what quantum physics later formulated, is the possibility that we operate in a multiverse—potentially an infinity of universes where different versions of our lives are playing out in ways both imaginable and unimaginable. Our guest today, astrophysicist Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi dives into this mystery—and why the universe we perceive is not the universe that actually exists. In trying to understand our deceptive universe, he examines spacetime, the illusion of mass, the large-scale structure of the universe, dark matter, and dark energy.  But, please don't let the ‘quantum physics' element here sound too deep because Dr Oluseyi explains the ideas with simple ease so all of us can understand, plus we talk about Dr. Oluseyi coming of age life, overcoming obstacles…crime, poverty, addiction, and work as a janitor, all to succeed beyond expectations. Including the fact that Dr.Oluseyi recently served as the space science education lead in the Space Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he provided strategic leadership and management for the directorate's investments in science education and communications. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show on KSCW, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi. Hakeem's new book, A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars (Ballantine Books) is available for purchase at Apple Books. Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi is the author (with Joshua Horwitz) of the new book A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars. He is also a professor at the Florida Institute of Technology, and a frequent contributor to the Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Hakeem has given multiple TED talks and is regularly invited to speak at science forums all around the world.  Hakeem reflects on how he managed to go from being an at-risk youth and self-described gangster nerd to one of the leading astrophysicists in the world. He shares the choices, luck, highs and lows, and random good fortune that pushed him along on that journey. Hakeem also offers wisdom and advice about navigating the color line as a black scientist, the importance of mentors, and his relationship with the late Chadwick Bowsman. And of course, he does some teaching on the likelihood of UFOs visiting the planet Earth, dark matter, and the multiverse. Jason Colavito is a professional skeptic and author. His investigations have appeared on the American Heroes Channel and the History Channel. Colavito's essays and commentary have also been featured by The New Republic and other leading publications. His forthcoming book is The Legends of the Pyramids.  Jason returns to the podcast to offer his thoughts on the Pentagon's newly released UFO/UAP report and what it does and does not reveal about “extraterrestrials” and other “exotic” and “unknown” “aircraft” and their supposed encounters with the United States military. Chauncey DeVega continues to warn that Donald Trump and his regime did in fact attempt a military coup. And Chauncey also highlights one of the funniest and most dark and revealing new episodes in the white right's anti-black and anti-brown “critical race theory” moral panic – Christian fascist Pat Robertson channeling his Django Unchained nightmare about black people taking up the “whip handle” against white people. The brilliant astrophysicist and master teacher HAKEEM OLUSEYI takes us into one of the most astounding IF's we have ever experienced. In a tour de force of imagination, Dr. Oluseyi helps us appreciate the unimaginably titanic scale of the Universe by asking us to imagine being unimaginably microscopic and instead of looking out at the Milky Way galaxy... these astronomers are inside... YOU! This is a fantastic voyage that takes you from the size of the electron, to the stars, to the scale of the universe and... beyond. Don't forget to take a breath and soak it all in, you won't forget this show. Dr. Oluseyi is an Astrophysicist, STEM Educator, Author, Speaker, Science Communicator, and Veteran. His memoir "A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey From The Streets To The Stars" has just been published, to great acclaim, and is available wherever books are sold. More info at https://sites.prh.com/a-quantum-life About the book: In this inspiring coming-of-age memoir, a world-renowned astrophysicist emerges from an impoverished childhood and crime-filled adolescence to ascend through the top ranks of research physics. Navigating poverty, violence, and instability, a young James Plummer had two guiding stars—a genius IQ and a love of science. But a bookish nerd is a soft target, and James faced years of bullying and abuse. As he struggled to survive his childhood in some of the country's toughest urban neighborhoods in New Orleans, Houston, and LA, and later in the equally poor backwoods of Mississippi, he adopted the persona of “gangsta nerd”—dealing weed in juke joints while winning state science fairs with computer programs that model Einstein's theory of relativity. Once admitted to the elite physics PhD program at Stanford University, James found himself pulled between the promise of a bright future and a dangerous crack cocaine habit he developed in college. With the encouragement of his mentor and the sole Black professor in the physics department, James confronted his personal demons as well as the entrenched racism and classism of the scientific establishment. When he finally seized his dream of a life in astrophysics, he adopted a new name, Hakeem Muata Oluseyi, to honor his African ancestors. Alternately heartbreaking and hopeful, A Quantum Life narrates one man's remarkable quest across an ever-expanding universe filled with entanglement and choice. --- Got an IF of your own?
