In 1999, this week's guest starred in one of the most financially successful films of all time, but the circumstances around the making and marketing of Blair Witch Project meant that her incredible accomplishment actually came with a lot of very steep downsides. A story that's briefly chronicled in her memoir: Growgirl: The Blossoming of an Unlikely Outlaw… by Heather Donahue (now known as Rei Hance). On paper, it certainly sounds like a dream come true. You star in a micro budget movie shot for just $60,000 that becomes a $250 million box office smash. But when her star turn struck gold, Rei was both the face of the franchise and fully hidden from sight. It's a wild story, even by show business standards, but Rei and I talked almost exclusively about weed. Because after she left Hollywood behind, she ended up spending a few years in a place she very lovingly called Nuggettown, a Northern California medical cannabis farm back in the beautiful gray market days of the early 2000s. Revisiting those days more than twenty years later filled me with a beautiful flush of nostalgia cut with a bit existential longing. It was a wonderful conversation and I'm excited to share it with you as our first great moment in of 2025. PATREON Please support Great Moments in Weed HIstory on Patreon. Even though The Blair Witch Project didn't invent the genre, it's probably the best-known and the biggest hit of all the found footage movies. The online marketing campaign was especially revolutionary. It's a shame that Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez never hit these heights again as writers or directors, but they got so much mileage out of their made-up story, considering it was mostly improvised by the then-unknown Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams. The unresolved mystery takes a lot of heat for its ambiguity, yet Ryan's one-man show talks about how haunting the whole thing still feels 25 years later. This 621st edition of Have You Ever Seen also talks a lot about who or what might have caused these 3 to disappear. So face the wall on this penultimate day of both October and of Scary Movie Month as this episode tries to figure out the horrific deal in The Blair Witch Project. Additional note: both the fake documentary "The Curse Of The Blair Witch" and the 2016 "Blair Witch" have been rewatched since recording this podcast. The "doc" is indeed very effective and even quite eerie. And while the 2016 sequel has its moments, Adam Wingard is WAY too reliant on jump scares and loud shock moments to bother building the dread the original Blair Witch did. In July of 1999 they were a crucial part of a film that lit up the box office, challenged the rules of conventional story telling, and impacted culture all over the world. 25 years later their true story is told. THE MOVIE CRYPT's special roundtable series continues with this fascinating, heartbreaking, and inspiring conversation with actors Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams from THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - one of the most profitable indie films ever made. Though this roundtable was originally being developed to discuss the taboo subject of “Hollywood Accounting,” the focus sharpened after Adam Green found himself at a front row seat to a very candid, honest and private conversation between the BLAIR WITCH cast and co-director Eduardo Sanchez last March in Cincinnati. Shortly after that night, actor Joshua Leonard came to the decision to speak up publicly on social media for the first time about what the experience of being such a significant part of THE BLAIR WITCH phenomenon has REALLY been like. For 11+ years of doing this weekly podcast you've likely heard the phrase “unless your film makes BLAIR WITCH money you'll never see the backend that you've earned” at least a dozen times or more. This conversation shatters that myth and peels back the curtain on a system that is in need of more transparency and fairness. As with all of our special roundtable episodes, this episode is being released publicly in its entirety.

Teen Horror Cast Episode 4: The Blair Witch ProjectThis movie and our discussion of it feature a bit of body horror and gore. As always, if that feels like it might be too much for you, you should head for the escape hatch and skip this episode. Additionally we will be hard core spoiling this movie! This film in particular is one that you should watch before we discuss it.Released in 1999 and produced for around sixty thousand dollars, The Blair Witch project grossed over two hundred and fifty million dollars and was one of the first so-called found-footage horror films. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the fictional documentary stars Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard each playing characters that share their actual names. It is presented as film and video that was discovered in the woods of Maryland while searching for the missing film makers who, it is stated early on, remain missing. We talk about:what the film reveals regarding human empathyunstable friend groups and why three is a tricky group numberhow the mona lisa is like the blair witchbroken bones, civilization, and packing well for campingand much more!

The Blair Witch Project is one of the most iconic films of the 90's, and it's even credited with starting the found footage genre, but I wasn't looking forward to re-watching it. I saw this when it came out and figured it wouldn't age well. I WAS WRONG! So, David did this illustration, which should really tell you how much we need Dustin. @dgoebel00 on Instagram. Three young adults, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams play themselves as a film crew that is headed into the woods of Maryland to document the “myth” of the Blair Witch. Before heading into the woods they stop at the closest town and interview the locals about the likelihood of such a myth, and received varying stories of belief and terror mixed with skeptics. Watch The Blair Witch ProjectWatch on AmazonClick here to Watch As they venture into the woods things start to grow alarming and they start to wonder if they are lost. Things take a turn for the worst as they realize that they got more witch than they bargained for. Review The Blair Witch Project is widely held to be the movie that kicked off the found footage genre. There are plenty of examples of found footage before this film, such as: Cannibal HolocaustCannibal FeroxThe Faces of Death SeriesThe ConnectionThe Last Broadcast84 Charlie MoPicGuinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood While these movies ranged in release date all the way back to the late 60’s the genre never gathered significant steam or public interest until the release of Blair Witch. Many of these movies, including Blair Witch, capitalized on the mistaken assumption that the movie was actual footage of real-life events that just happened to be caught on tape. The hype train that surrounded the release of this movie was a sight to behold. This is one of, or maybe the first movie ever to rely primarily on an internet marketing campaign. Check out our review of Paranormal Activity 2 https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2019/08/07/paranormal-activity-2-review/ The movie itself is something of an anomaly, not quite a film, and not quite a home video. It is hard to place it squarely in a genre. With the added suggestion that the footage was real, it made this a real freak show. The Blair Witch Project relies heavily on audience buy-in and it is able to accomplish it by being very believable by nature. This is how young twenty-somethings would act, and something they would do, and the scenario they find themselves in is pretty easily a universal nightmare to any viewer. I saw this in theaters upon release, and never again since. I was not looking forward to a rewatch because I thought I had this movie pegged from the first viewing. I did not. It still works! It’s still scary as shit, believable, and a crazy-fun ride from beginning to end. The poor footage quality, total amateur filming style and distant audio sound coupled with the setting of the New England woods, holds up well. While it lacks the polish and delivery that a true filmmaker’s film would deliver, it’s supposed to. If you enjoy this movie you should also check out The Curse of the Blair Witch, a Sci-Fi Channel documentary that accompanied the theatrical release of the movie. Score 10/10

This week, Brian, John, and Elaine grab their backpacks and old camcorders as they venture into the woods to review Blair Witch (2016), the sequel to the 1999 found footage classic, The Blair Witch Project. Does the sequel hold up to the original or does it fall in line with other nostalgia-based sequels...sucking terribly. So grab your stick people and dust off your shaky cam as we dive into our film review of Blair Witch (2016). Movie News! Upcoming Films Coming From Controversial Filmmakers Nate Parker- Director of The Birth of a Nation Mel Gibson - Director of Hacksaw Ridge Clint Eastwood - Director of Sully BONUS NEWS STORY!- Michael Bay says new Transformers film will feature alternative WWII setting, complete with Hitler and Winston Churchill Blair Witch (2016) The Blair Witch Project Came out in 1999 when the internet was still on dial up and we didn't know what the hell it was. Revolutionary marketing strategy. First real example of viral internet marketing. Centered around the idea that the events in the film were "real". One of the first commercially viable "Found Footage" Horror Films. Cannibal Holocaust was the first. Film cost $60,000 to make and grossed over 140 million dollars. Echoes the hysteria caused by Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds. Blair Witch (2016) 3rd sequel in the franchise- ignore that whole Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2- it's really bad. The film is a sequel/reboot that recycles a lot of the same scares and plot. This movie may cause "Rage-mares" A nightmare caused by the frustration of watching a terrible movie. Blair Witch - Plot The plot deals with James, the brother of Heather Donahue from the first film, searching for his sister after receiving a youtube clip from a contact in Burketsville that purportedly shows his sister alive after missing and presumed dead for 22 years. James and his Scooby Doo gang of friends-- Lisa: The filmmaker and will they/won't me female friend, Ashley: Lisa's friend, Peter: Lisa's boyfriend and James friend that seems to have serious anger issues-- decide to travel to Burketsville, meet up with James' contact, and search for Heather. Hilarity ensues as the group end up getting lost despite having all the GPS filmmaking tech including drones, ear cameras, and HD video gear. For 90 minutes, each member of the Scooby Doo gang gets bumped off by the Blair Witch. Scooby Doo Gang- Deaths Talia- Death by stick person voodoo doll snapping. Ashley- Gets an infected foot wound that has weird maggot-like creature in it. Lightning hits tree and kills her too. Peter- Crushed by falling tree Laine- Not dead- but becomes The Renfield to The Blair Witch. James- Death by looking at the Blair Witch after hearing his sister's voice. Lisa- Death by looking at the Blair Witch after hearing James's voice. Final Thoughts All the subtlety of the first film is now gone as The Blair Witch is replaced by a creepy looking monster, loud and obnoxious noises, and a stupid alien light show. The film is utterly devoid of consistent plot and character development. In a horror film, we need to know and care about the characters so that we empathize with the terror in the film. Don't ever say in a horror movie that you're "going to get some firewood." You will die shortly after. The movie as a whole is very hard to follow. Making a shitty film for cheap and seeing a gross of double does not mean it is a good film. Doesn't take into account marketing costs. Amount of theaters that the film plays in. Marketing viral, sustos e sons escabrosos fazem parte dessa conversa. Sejam bem-vindos ao TigreCast!

It's time to delve back into one our favorite recurring genres. It's time for a little horror. First up, it’s THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT directed by Daniel Myrick and Bob Griffin, and starring Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams. After that we’re watching horror mockumentary BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON, directed by Scott Glosserman and starring Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, and Robert Englund (a.k.a. Freddy Kreuger)
Heather was so much fun to talk to today, and I really learned a lot about just what goes into growing quality medical marijuana. After dealing with a bit of a snafu on the phone line she shared with me memories about shooting The Blair Witch Project, other wild, and crazy adventures she has enjoyed, and why she is now known as the GrowGirl, also the name of her new book. Yup, Heather Donahue has left Los Angeles, celebrity, and acting behind her. Her new career? She is the GrowGirl, she grows medical marijuana in Nuggettown, California, where it is always sunny and life is mellow. Growing medical marijuana is a business that is oftentimes dominated by men, but to hear her talk, it really is an entire subculture, that she and I believe is becoming more mainstream every day. She lovingly calls her well taken care of marijuana plants, "The Girls", because all of the marijuana plants are female. Heather also teaches "Memoir" classes? If you've ever wanted to write your own life story, this lady has the wisdom to teach you everything you need to know. I wanted to know what the biggest stumbling block was for people who have tried to write their own life story, and her answer may surprise you.
