In dystopian Old Detroit, officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) is transferred to Metro West AKA Hell and is paired with officer Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) and sent out into the mean streets. Meanwhile OPC, headed by the Old Man (Dan O'Herlihy), the company providing money to assholes like Dick Jones (Ronny Cox, really?!) and Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer) in order to militarize the police, has created a robotic cop Ed-209 to clear the streets of crime. While Ed-209 malfunctions, Murphy and Lewis follow crime boss, Clarence Bodicker (Kurtwood Smith) and his gang into an abandoned building where the gang gets the drop on them and Murphy gets shot to shit and left for dead. Seeing his opportunity to get in with the Old Man and move up the corporate ladder, Bob has Murphy saved and transformed into the ultimate justice machine sans dick, Robocop, coming to bust up your operation. RoboCop (1987) is often remembered for its explosive action and ultra-violent sequences, but what truly sets it apart as a great film that has aged remarkably well is its biting social commentary and immersive world-building. Paul Verhoeven's dystopian vision of Detroit—a crumbling city overrun by crime, economic decay, and corporate overreach—feels eerily prescient. At its core, RoboCop is not just about a cybernetic law enforcer taking down criminals; it's a reflection of America's descent into corporate greed, privatization, and unchecked capitalism. The villainous OCP (Omni Consumer Products) isn't just a faceless corporation; it represents the real-world fears of monopolistic power consolidating control over everything from law enforcement to public services. The film's satirical interludes, such as the over-the-top news broadcasts and dystopian commercials, add layers of depth, subtly reminding the audience that the world of RoboCop isn't too far removed from our own. What makes RoboCop endure beyond its action-packed spectacle is how meticulously it constructs its world. Every detail, from the dilapidated streets of Old Detroit to the slick, corporate offices of OCP, reinforces the film's themes of inequality and moral decay. The rise of automation, the privatization of public institutions, and the way media numbs the public with sensationalism all feel strikingly relevant today. Even Alex Murphy's transformation into RoboCop serves as a commentary on the loss of humanity in an increasingly mechanized, corporate-driven world. His journey isn't just about enforcing the law—it's about reclaiming his identity and fighting back against the system that tried to erase him. Over 35 years later, RoboCop still feels fresh, not just as an action movie, but as a brutally sharp satire of a society that has only drifted closer to the dystopian future it once warned us about.Stick around until the end for a round of RoboCop Metacritic Mayhem!Dead or alive, you're coming with us, nomads.

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

How can you not sit down with a couple of 80's heavy hitters for our month's dystopian theme “SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROW”? Especially the one we're discussing in this episode. This privatized authoritarian world of technocratic mediocrity might hit closer to home than any future film we're discussing all month. The near future setting of Old Detroit is extremely violent and absurd. There are no deep solutions. Only increased repression by corporate funded police. Barely anything works so if you don't die by getting shot 30 times then you'll probably go out in a much dumber way when your technology shits the bed. Paul Verhoeven sets up his reputation nicely with his ultra-violent, ultra-satirical 1987 sci-fi film “ROBOCOP” starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith and more. Officer Murphy meets his end and is reborn into a 24 hour policing cyborg. His natural training is essential but his memories of his old life are harder to deprogram. Robocop became an eighties cultural icon who once save the Pro Wrestler Sting from a cage after the four horseman tased him and locked him up. Unlike his mechanical contemporaries, Robocop stood the test of time. Robocop is really the only functional thing in this movie. Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will breakdown the 1987 cyberpunk masterpiece ROBOCOP (1987) - directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller. In a dystopic and crime-ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories. This is not only one of my favorite cyberpunk films of all-time, it is one of my favorite overall films period.  To me, this is a FIVE STAR FILM, hands down, it's perfect, it's iconic, it's legendary. ROBOCOP is a perfect cyberpunk film. It encompasses all of the thematic signatures of the genre – the high tech of OCP, RoboCop's cyborg full body prosthetic armor, the ED-209 enforcement droid, and the plans for the Delta City makeover compounded with the low life of Old Detroit's crime-ridden streets, the Police Force getting decimated and threatening a strike, the rampant criminal element that is destroying a once proud city. I'll buy that for a dollar! Clint, Cal and Alex dig into the incredible staying power this movie has thanks to its brilliant satire, why the extreme violence also has good comedic timing and why the campiness in Verhoeven's career is not a bug, it's a feature. Robocop 3 is the embodiment of when a franchise has creatively exhausted itself. It feels and looks cheap; has nothing new to say; and tones down the series' signature violence to milk the most out of a dwindling audience. For fans of the series, its existence must be heartbreaking. Robocop 3's ineptitude is on par with other disastrous sequels of the era, like Superman IV. That is really all you can say about it. It recycles plot points from the first film and shamelessly calls back to things you loved from that one, as well. Its only novel introduction is a robot ninja assassin, whose fights with Robocop are so painfully slow, you will be tempted to watch them in 2x speed. Thus, Robocop 3's 6% on Rotten Tomatoes should not come as a shock; but you should be dumbstruck to discover that it out-grossed its predecessor. Even with the PG-13 rating, that is astounding. After doing three episodes of the RoboPod and having to constantly look over our shoulders to see what crime is going to be perpetrated on us next, we've decided to take a brief vacation from the dangerous streets of Old Detroit and take Saturday Morning Apocalypse to Gotham City, where nothing bad ever happens. I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we slap on our utility belts are fellow cartoonophiles Nick (aka Immortan Hoof), Mike, and Ryan. Listen as we discuss Batman - Mask of the Phantasm, aka: the Citizen Kane of Batman stories; we marvel at the seemingly countless number of abandoned superstructures in Gotham that house villain hideouts; and finally, Ryan offers up his hot take on the Phantasm's signature knife-nub weapon. This week, Daniel Howes says the United Auto Workers’ fight with General Motors Co. is a battle over dollars and cents pitting radically different visions of the future. And there’s no room for Old Detroit thinking because Old Detroit is dead, or should be, buried by denial, competition and the ignominy of begging Congress and taxpayers for money to avert collapse.

This time, they've got company as they are joined by Ben from TopFilmTip!  During the episode the three delve into director Paul Verhoeven's scathing satirical sci-fi to discuss lovable villains, robo-resurrections and the correct way to start a petrol explosion (though we strongly advise against doing so). As usual, there'll be some standard production chat around the creation of the iconic Robocop suit, a brief Coulda Woulda Shoulda and some very Suspicious Spin-Offs. We'll buy that for a dollar! Police Investigate Detroit Funeral Homes After Remains Found, Ford Taps Bryan Cranston For New Ads & New Life For An Old Detroit Mall

Here's your Daily Detroit podcast recorded in the Paris of the Midwest on Monday Oct. 22: Two Detroit funeral homes are under investigation after police found the remains of fetuses and a dead infant. One of the businesses — Perry Funeral Home — was closed by the state, with its mortuary license revoked. Sven reports to us about his trip from Las Vegas, where Ford briefed dealers on its plans to make 75 percent of its product lineup all-new by 2020 and unleashed the new "Built Ford Proud" ad campaign starring Bryan Cranston, perhaps best known as Walter White from "Breaking Bad." Ford was trying to calm the nerves of a dealer base rattled by criticisms from Wall Street and auto analysts over a lack of clarity on new products and how exactly it intends to turn around its money-losing operations in foreign markets. Across town, General Motors was named No. 1 for gender equity in a new ranking of publicly traded companies by Equileap, which monitors and gathers data on gender equality in companies. GM is led by a female CEO, Mary Barra, and recently promoted a woman to be chief financial officer. The Tower Center, an often-overlooked shopping mall at Grand River and Greenfield on Detroit's west side, is getting a new anchor tenant. Forman Mills will celebrate its grand opening next month. It takes over the space last occupied by Montgomery Ward, which closed in 1986. The mall has seen a number of small, black-owned businesses open for business, thanks to low rents.  Corktown is in line to get another new coffee shop. Lucky Detroit will open on the second floor above Detroit Barbers. Local favorite Bucharest Grill is reopening downtown. The popular purveyor of shawarma will open at 436 W. Columbia Street with 130 seats and 24 beer taps. You can now pay those painfully expensive parking tickets on the city's free Park Detroit mobile app. And in giant pizza organization that owns two of our four professional sports teams news, Little Caesars has unveiled its new thin crust pizza nationwide. They'll go for $6 between 4 and 8 p.m. As we did with the 5-Meat Pizza back in the summer, plan on a live-on-the-pod taste test from your crack Daily Detroit team. This week, Daniel Howes says a long-running economic expansion, near-record unemployment and Detroit’s historic bankruptcy should be enough to make the “new Detroit” a reality. But growing signs of backlash against pro-business policy suggests, rightly or not, that this corner of the industrial heartland remains the same as it ever was.

The future of law enforcement has arrived to Invasion of the Remake. Straight from Old Detroit the iconic Peter Weller version of the Robocop (1987) spawned a franchise of movie sequels, toys, comics, cartoons, a television series, and a t.v. mini-series. Paul Verhoeven directs the sci-fi, action classic costarring Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer and Ray Wise. Robocop is an '80's icon, but a more modern take on Robocop (2014) starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, and Samuel Jackson failed to connect with audiences despite a strong script and stellar cast.
