A few years ago, when Gabe Piechowicz decided to change careers from logging to religious ministry, he didn’t imagine that his work would be almost exclusively focused on helping people get off the streets in Eugene. But shortly into his new career, he was calling local shelters to help find a place for some of his church’s neighbors and Dan Bryant answered his phone. Bryant is the founder and director of Opportunity Village, one of Oregon’s first village-model temporary shelters, informed by Dignity Village in Portland. Piechowicz ended up working at Opportunity Village but ultimately began his own ministry in a separate housing program he founded called Everyone Village. EV, as it’s called for short, is on a four acre piece of land that was essentially donated. There’s a warehouse that’s been converted into a community meeting space, kitchen and office, as well as a separate building with full plumbing that has showers, toilets and a washer/dryer. There are 60 structures here, all with electricity:  tiny homes called “cottages of hope,” white prefabricated sheds and RVs that are parked inside the lot.  The village is self-governed, with expectations, rules and requirements. The people who live here are getting back on their feet, overcoming—and in the process of overcoming —a variety of social and economic challenges. Some of them joined us and shared their story when we visited EV recently and recorded a show as part of a solutions-oriented series focused on some of Oregon’s biggest problems. Our guests were: Dan Bryant and Gabe Piechowicz of Everyone Village; Brittany Quick-Warner of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce; as well as villagers Laura Dwinell, Sam Jones and Terri Kulick, and former Opportunity villager, Paul Miller.

In this episode, we had a conversation with ANDMORE Chairman & CEO Bob Maricich, who was recently named as the 2023 Industry Icon Honoree by TSNN. He shared insight into the company he founded in 2011, built over the last 13 years and rebranded with a new name in 2023. Maricich talked about the transition of ownership from Bain Capital and Oaktree Capital Management to Blackstone, which has supported the company's expansion and acquisitions since 2017. Find out how and where the company is investing to transform ANDMORE into an omnichannel wholesale marketmaker for the gift, home furnishings and apparel industries. Podcast host Danica Tormohlen also shared the top five new stories from Trade Show News Network, Exhibit News Now and Corporate Event News that were published in the second half of July 2023. Our guest Bob Maricich is the Chairman and CEO of ANDMORE – formerly International Market Centers (IMC) – the premier omnichannel wholesale marketmaker for the gift, home furnishings and apparel industries.  Maricich was instrumental in envisioning and developing the strategy for the creation of International Market Centers, L.P. In 2011, he founded IMC with sponsors Bain Capital and Oaktree Capital Management raising more than $1B to fund the purchase of the International Home Furnishings Center, the ShowPlace properties, and the Market Square properties in High Point, NC, and merging them with the World Market Center in Las Vegas to form the world's largest operator of premier permanent showroom and tradeshow space for the furnishings, home décor, and gift industries. During the next five years IMC built or purchased five additional buildings in High Point, NC, bringing their total to 17 buildings.  In 2017, Maricich led IMC's transition to new ownership by Blackstone, one of the world's leading investment firms, and Fireside Investments. In 2018 he directed IMC's acquisitions of AmericasMart in Atlanta, GA, and the subsequent acquisition of the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC), creating a compelling portfolio spanning the east and west coasts of the United States that now encompasses more than 22 million square feet of world-class B2B exhibition space.  With the AmericasMart aquisition, IMC also became the managing partner of LightFair, North America's largest architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference as well as owner and operator of the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart which hosts dozens of outside events, meetings and conferences each year. In 2020, despite the Covid shutdown, IMC constructed the 315,000 sf Expo at World Market Center Las Vegas, addressing the lack of downtown Las Vegas exhibit space. In 2022, IMC acquired luxury tradeshow Shoppe Object and has since expanded it dramatically. In 2023, IMC rebranded to ANDMORE repositioning the company as a fully omnichannel marketmaker utilizing digital tools to extend the value of physical markets and fuel year-round opportunities for buyers and sellers to connect and grow. Under Maricich's leadership, ANDMORE serves more than 350,000 global wholesale buyers through its physical markets, design centers and digital channels. It presents some 34 apparel, furniture, gift, home décor and lifestyle markets and buying events – in permanent showroom space and trade show exhibits – in Atlanta; High Point, NC; Las Vegas; and New York. Some 2,200+ exhibitors showcase their products in permanent showroom spaces. It brings in an additional 7,000+ temporary exhibitors in 2 million sf of trade show exhibit space each year. It serves the design trade year-round through showroom offerings and programming at ADAC, AmericasMart and the Las Vegas Design Center. Additionally, it offers digital innovations that optimize the physical market experience.  Maricich joined World Market Center as CEO in January 2008. Prior to that, he spent 11 years as CEO of Century Furniture Industries, a leading luxury furniture manufacturer. From 1989-1996 Maricich was President and CEO of American Drew Furniture and American of Martinsville, at the time the largest manufacturer of furniture for the hospitality industry. Additionally, he was an executive with Flexsteel Industries, R.S Bacon Veneer Company and Texaco.  In 2015, the Anti Defamation League honored Maricich with the American Heritage Award. In 2016 he was honored as Man of the Year by the Tri-State Home Furnishings Association. In 2017, Maricich received the American Heritage Distinguished Service Award from the American Home Furnishings Alliance. In 2019, he was named a Furniture Industry Icon by the International Home Furnishings Representatives Association. Marcich was listed among The Atlantan Magazine's 25 Most Influential People in Atlanta, and also was included in Atlanta Magazine's 500 Most Powerful Leaders in Georgia. In 2021, Maricich was inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, the industry's highest honor.  Maricich has been an active board member for numerous charitable organizations including City of Hope, Opportunity Village, and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Maricich is a graduate of Montana State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He and his wife, Ande, have been married for 50 years and have three grown sons. He especially enjoys his lifelong passion for fly-fishing.  The Maricich's reside in Key Largo, FL, and Kennebunkport, ME. Connect with Bob on LinkedIn here.

Today we visited with Quida Chancey live at Brilliant Baltimore Here's some background on Quida and her organization:LaQuida Chancey was born in Manhattan and moved to Baltimore as a child, raised in Baltimore County with her parents and 2 younger sisters. LaQuida graduated from Western Tech in Catonsville and after high school attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. She graduated in 2004, with a B.S. in Computer Science and mathematics minor and moved back to Baltimore in 2006 and purchased a home in East Baltimore in 2009.In 2014, she begin investing in the Baltimore Real Estate Market and Xavier Estates, LLC was formed. As a developer who focuses on affordability and first time home buyers, it didn't seem to be enough to make an impact just focusing on those two things. Her desire was to get into the business of RE to create more black homeowners, and that really wasn't happening as quickly or as easily as planned.Admittedly, she is obsessed with tiny homes and designed a few with affordable housing in mind because by definition they can be an affordable housing solution. Throughout the years, she has always volunteered with organizations that focused on homelessness advocacy like United Way, #HashtagLunchBag Baltimore ,Save our Village Baltimore, and participated in a multitude of local events. That exposure has allowed for countless conversations and brainstorming sessions over the years. Taking those conversations and ideas one step further, Smalltimore Homes was founded in February 2018 and by April it had received 501(c)(3) status. After witnessing many of the tent encampments around Baltimore were being cut off from public access and realizing that whole communities were being dismantled was really the key factor in forming the nonprofit. Ending the tent encampments doesn’t solve homelessness, it satisfies the public perception. LaQuida has been working with the homeless population for many years now, but until recently, shel believes there is an actual war on homelessness. In a city like Baltimore where red-lining was created, it’s shocking that 4 of 5 homeless people in Baltimore are black. After researching a number of tiny home communities on the west coast like - Opportunity Village, Emerald Village and Cottage Village, it was obvious that she could do more here using those models because they are thriving and sustaining communities in some cases for over 10 years. Chancey believes that hard part is done and we just need to tweak the blueprint to fit Baltimore. The idea is that Smalltimore Homes’ tiny home & micro shelter communities could address Baltimore blight and vacancies by deconstructing/disassembling those properties first, dispose of debris, anything hazardous, and keep what is salvageable and safe to rebuild. There are thousands and thousands of properties to choose from, and several deconstruction companies in Baltimore like ARC and Details Deconstruct. She believes it has the potential to be a very successful model for transitional tiny home communities with the potential to grow into an entire eco-system that creates a stronger Baltimore.Find LaQuida Chancey - IG: @SmalltimoreHomesdotorg Website: smalltimorehomes.orgSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/baronessbree)Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/baronessbree)

LaQuida Chancey was born in Manhattan and moved to Baltimore as a child, raised in Baltimore County with her parents and 2 younger sisters. LaQuida graduated from Western Tech in Catonsville and after high school attended Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. She graduated in 2004, with a B.S. in Computer Science and mathematics minor and moved back to Baltimore in 2006 and purchased a home in East Baltimore in 2009. In 2014, she begin investing in the Baltimore Real Estate Market and Xavier Estates, LLC was formed. As a developer who focuses on affordability and first time home buyers, it didn't seem to be enough to make an impact just focusing on those two things. Her desire was to get into the business of RE to create more black homeowners, and that really wasn't happening as quickly or as easily as planned. Admittedly, she is obsessed with tiny homes and designed a few with affordable housing in mind because by definition they can be an affordable housing solution. She believes it has the potential to be a very successful model for transitional tiny home communities with the potential to grow into an entire eco-system that creates a stronger Baltimore. My guest on this edition of PodKats! is one of the co-founders of Opportunity Village, Linda Smith. She has just released the book “Unwanted, How a Mother Learned to Turn Shame, Grief and Fear Into Purpose, Passion and Empowerment. Linda helped raise a half a billion dollars at Opportunity Village in Las Vegas from 1978 through 2016, and lauched such initiatives as the Great Santa Run, Camelot and Magical Forest. Opportunity Village, of course, is the organization that provides assistance for adults with intellectual disabiliteis. All of this charitable work was inspired by Linda’s late son, Christopher, who was born with Down Syndrome.

In the summer of 2018 I made the trip up to Eugene Oregon, a beautifully crunchy place where homelessness is an equally tricky issue. I pitched a tent and stayed for 3 nights in a pretty well known place called Opportunity Villiage. Opportunity Villiage is experiment born from research documented in a book you should read if you’re listening to this podcast called Tent City Urbanism: From Self-Organized Camps to Tiny House Villages, written by city planner named Andrew Heben. The 30 person city sanctioned villiage on the outskirts of Eugene is about half tiny homes, these are basically four walled structures with a bed and space for furniture and half of the housing are quonset huts which are canvass tent numbers on wooden platforms. Each participant pays 30 dollars a month to stay there and has to do a weekly shift working security at the front gate and pitch in for grounds maintenance. The village is most known for its self governance structure and I really wanted to see this place first hand. My time there was extremely eye-opening. It wasn’t perfect, there was drama, but overall most people I interacted with there were thankful that project existed and served as a resources to them in their lives. My guest today, Ren, was one of the Villagers and this is their story. We can never be good enough. We can never earn what we do not deserve. And what the lawyer didn’t understand is what some of us do not understand. The answer to his problem was standing right in front of him. God loves his creation and he sent Jesus to do what we could not do for ourselves. Luke 10:29 (NRSV) 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:30–37 (NRSV) 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34 He went to him (literally means, came down upon him) and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” The word Jesus uses in the story is this word, Σπλάγχνον--splangkh´-non – it literally means “to have the bowels yearn.” Luke 15:20 (NRSV) 20 So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” ἔλεος -- el´-eh-os The Greek term for mercy, eleos, is often used to characterize the action of God’s faithfulness. To be merciful is to be like God; to give because someone has need, not because someone deserves.  Luke 1:78 (NRSV) 78By the tender(splongnon) mercy (elehos) of our God, Mercy does not need reasons. What can we do, out of compassion and mercy, to prevent people from getting in the ditch to begin with? 1. Dream Center The Dream Center exists to encourage, educate, and empower people in need through the love of Jesus Christ. This is a focused ministry to the poor of our communities. In 2017, 353 people in needing some sort of emergency assistance. 190 of them were considered homeless 176 of those with children. Opportunities : Teaching classes on a variety of topics, helping out at Opportunity Village, to serving food at SHINE, the soup kitchen. 2. Volunteering in Pickens County Schools Opportunities: become a reader, a classroom mom or dad, helping with homework, going on field trips or working one on one with kids in the classroom. Volunteer Training here at the church. 3.
