RPG developer and publisher Allan T. Grohe Jr. (aka "grodog") joins to talk AD&D retroclone OSRIC, the OSR, Black Blade Publishing, John Eric Holmes, and RPG goodness in general. Allan LOVES him some Greyhawk. The skills he learned tracking down early information on Greyhawk helped lead to his main non-RPG career. How active is the current AD&D 1E and/or OSRIC scene? What is Allan's definition of OSR, and does he feel it's important? The legal importance of OSRIC to the OSR community. ‘zines are often lauded, but at one time Dragon magazine was a sort of “D&D website” in its day as well. Sifu Rubia discovered the benefits of Tai Chi as a way to heal herself, and she has been a consistent student and practitioner ever since. An orphan born in Bangladesh, Sifu Rubia has navigated the scars of deep loss and trauma creating intense anxiety in her body and mind, including the traumatic loss of her body to a miscarriage which brought her to her first Qi Gong class where she discovered the healing and strength building power Qi cultivation firsthand, Because Qi Gong & Tai Chi have helped her overcome barriers attached to grief and loss, Sifu Rubia decided that she wanted to be able to pass these benefits on to others, to teach as many people as possible just how accessible these ancient technologies are, and how much they can help people of all ages take control of their physical and mental wellbeing and bring light into darkness. Since then, she has accumulated hundreds of hours of teacher training, including Yang Family style Tai Chi, Yoga, and Iron Shirt Qi Gong. With over a decade of teaching experience, Sifu Rubia has transformed hundreds of lives, giving students the tools to maintain health, rejuvenate their bodies and recapture youthful energy and equanimity in their life. These modalities are truly sacred spaces where one can self-regulate and heal. Using all that accumulated knowledge and experience, teaching in community centers, drug, and alcohol rehabilitation centers, private group classes, as well as public speaking engagements at both local and national corporate functions, Sifu Rubi has created an incredible Tai Chi Fundamentals for Beginners course that is the perfect start to your journey to a new, healthier and more balanced you. As she says to herself, “The whole world needs healing now. And that journey starts within ourselves. And then your emotions are temporary. But when you're in them, you think either that they're forever, but they're temporary. So learning how to move through them through your breath. Thoughts on Breathing The simplest one is one hand on the heart, and one hand on the belly called belly breath. That's the simplest, but for me has been the most affected at any point in time, and do it wherever you need, if you're in your car, and you're stuck in traffic, and just take a moment and can reconnect to your breath really deeply and mindfully. There are some fire breath techniques that help, move stagnation from the body. So that's really a good one as well when you want to energize as opposed to soften. And then there's alternate nasal breathing, where you alternate breathing in and out from one nostril, and then switching over. So those are the three main ones that I work with. But there are plenty of others out there as well. Suggested Resources Book: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi: 12 Weeks to a Healthy Body, Strong Heart, and Sharp Mind By Dr. Peter Wayne Book: The Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu (The Essential Wisdom Library) By by Lao Tzu and Brian Browne Walker Bullying Story Bullying, as a woman and a woman of color, I feel like it's a constant state of affairs. I've been in the world of business for a very long time, I've managed multiple businesses, and I've owned multiple businesses. So the constant confrontation, of being up against the patriarchy, to me is constant bullying. I'm sure every woman can relate to that, whether you're a woman of color or not. Then I come back to how these practices have helped me soften my inner being and have put me in touch with my Yin side because when you are in the business world, you're all young energy. And that's fine to get work done and get things going. But it's imbalanced. If you can't find your softness and your femininity, whether you're male or female, then you're doing a disservice to yourself. So these modalities have helped me to soften my energy. Besides being present, it's soft that will always overcome the heart. So it's the softness of the water, but the consistency and the persistence of the water that cuts through the rock. And I'm quoting, the Tao Te Ching, this is not me. This is not my realization so in that sense, my mindfulness practice has helped me with that, and then, in meditating more on it further. Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd who starred in more than 27 Hollywood films, died on 10th August, 1932 at the age of 13. Radio stations around the country interrupted programming to announce his death and then broadcast an hour long tribute to him.  Discovered in war-torn France by American corporal Lee Duncan, he was taken back to the USA and trained to be a stunt dog, but it was his emotional close-up work which wowed the critics. “Perhaps Rin Tin Tin belongs to that modern school of acting, which expresses everything in the face”, raved the LA Times. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal why Rin Tin Tin was named in Duncan's wife's divorce filing; explain how he followed in the footsteps of previous canine movie star, Strongheart; and consider the logistics of exactly how he performed in the Rin Tin Tin radio show…  Further Reading: • ‘Excerpt: Rin Tin Tin by Susan Orlean' (The New York Times, 2011): https://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/20/books/review/rin-tin-tin.html • ‘The Dogs Who Saved Hollywood: Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin' (Rutgers University Press, 2014): https://arcade.stanford.edu/content/dogs-who-saved-hollywood-strongheart-and-rin-tin-tin-0 • ‘Susan Orlean on the original Rin Tin Tin' (The New Yorker, 2011): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFOA4og8To8 But… what's that, boy? 6 Effective Ways of Heart Disease Prevention Anyone who wishes to optimize health by protecting the heart and brain must listen to this! Dr. Marwan Sabbagh and Joe Piscatella combine the six most effective principles for heart disease prevention. They unfold valuable heart and brain facts in their new book Strong Heart, Sharp Mind, which are equally beneficial for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. In a way, they open hope for effective heart disease treatments, dealing with Alzheimer's, and other brain ailments with a multidisciplinary approach. What is good for your heart is good for your brain and ultimately contributes to your overall healthy lifestyle. This episode guides listeners to optimal well-being using a 6-Step Brain-Body Balance Program. In this discussion, he adds that the mechanism that underpins heart disease symptoms considerably overlaps with the symptoms of Alzheimer's. Therefore, aggressively managing the cures for one has two or more benefits. How Is Heart Disease The # 1 Cause Of Death Worldwide? Researchers agreed that cardiovascular arrest, high blood pressure, and cholesterol are risk factors for many other diseases like Alzheimer's. High blood pressure is one of the mechanisms overlapping Alzheimer's and heart disease symptoms, making it the most deadly disease of all time. Dr. Sabbagh believes aggressively managing cholesterol and high blood pressure might considerably help heart disease prevention through natural anti-inflammatory processes. He adds that saturated fats are bad for the brain, which triggers amyloid (an unhealthy protein in the brain), hindering ongoing heart disease treatment. Is High Blood Pressure A Contributor to Heart Disease? National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicines analyzed the whole shebang, including diet, cognitive stimulation, exercise, health conditions, etc. They came up with their thorough and expert analysis that blood pressure management, mental stimulation, and exercise were the only three things that showed sufficient evidence to recommend them in clinical practices. Several other health organizations are researching, concluding that high blood pressure management is the ultimate risk reduction strategy for the heart and brain. What Are Neurobics? Neurobics are brain exercises that aid in healthy mental activities and prevent severe diseases such as Alzheimer's and heart disease. Dr. Sabbagh suggests Neurobics as a way of simultaneously doing physical activity and cognitive stimulation. In the book, the author outlines the perfect Neurobics that can improve heart function and blood vessel health. Transforming The American Diet into A Healthful Way to Eat According to Berkeley Wellness Letter, Nutrition Actions, and Tufts Newsletter, modest dietary changes can help fight heart disease symptoms. Similarly, one fish meal a week, two berries a week, and two vegetables a day can reduce Alzheimer's disease risk. Managing Alzheimer's with A Good Sleep Regimen Sleep apnea is a huge risk for heart attacks as well as a considerable risk for cognitive decline. Quality sleep is the procedure by which your brain removes the amyloids. That's why Dr. Sabbagh refers to sleep as an easy fix to our mild cognitive illness. Exercise during the daytime, regular meal times, waking up, and going to bed are far more beneficial than sleeping pills. Also, there is a link between inadequate sleep quality, plaque building, and high blood pressure. How Stress Management Is Vital To Defeat Heart Diseases A person's mental health can positively or negatively impact their physical health, and the risk of heart failure may increase with high blood pressure. So, they refer to a phenomenon called 'hippie genetics,' which has secondary benefits in dealing with stress and reducing risks for heart disease. As said, you are more likely to be stress-free if you are physically active and socially connected, leading a healthy lifestyle. Keep your heart pumping and passions alive by knowing what is good for you. If you have people that support you and share the same bond, you are more likely to be mentally healthy. The people who practice cognitive stimulation are the people who exercise and eat right and ultimately lead a healthy lifestyle. However, it is more important to practice mental stimulation even if you have heart disease symptoms or Alzheimer's. The book gives you a great plan to follow that. About the Guest: Marwan Noel Sabbagh, M.D, formerly the Director of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health at Cleveland Clinic, is internationally known for his expertise in the brain and vascular disorders like Alzheimer's and related dementias.
