Dealing with Hair Loss During the Holidays | Dr. Angie Phipps - 044

In this episode of HairPod, we brought Dr. Phipps back in to share her knowledge with us once again! She came on the podcast to tell us how the holiday season can impact our hair, and what we can start doing now to improve our hair and scalp health. Reducing Stress-Related Hair Loss Hair loss during the holidays has a few culprits, but one of the main ones is stress. Sure, the holidays bring us a lot of joy, but the impacts of travel, hosting friends or family, attending social events, and gift-giving all add up. Dr. Phipps emphasizes that it is the prolonged stress we experience during the winter season that causes hair loss and not the typical day-to-day stress we all experience. Stress may not cause hair loss in everyone, but people who are prone to male- or female-pattern hair loss may see an increase in their hair loss during stressful periods. Other Causes of Hair Loss in Winter Winter-related health concerns can have an impact on our overall hair health. Many people experience more dryness during the winter (this, of course, will depend on your climate), and this can lead to dry and flaky scalps. If dead skin builds up on the scalp, it can become difficult for hair follicles to work in a healthy, normal way, so cleansing the scalp and even moisturizing it can help with scalp and hair health. Dr. Phipps also touches on how diet affects hair health – she says they don't see many negative impacts from people eating a more rich or sugary diet during the holidays, but diet drugs after the holidays can increase hair loss in some people. What to Do About Winter Hair Loss If you want to make sure your hair looks healthy and full in all of your holiday pictures this year, but you're concerned about hair loss, Dr. Phipps said it's good to start treating your hair loss issues early. Of course, it can take a few months with certain treatments to start seeing results. To get you through the holiday season, Dr. Phipps recommends HairClub's Xtrands, a process that weaves fibers into your existing hair to increase density and volume. The consultation to assess if Xtrands will work for your unique situation is free. Resources Book a Free Consultation today! Thanks for listening to HairPod. We hope you enjoyed this episode. Even after taking into account factors such as diet, lifestyle, and genetics, African Americans still surpass other racial and ethnic groups in susceptibility to hypertension. A new study published in the journal Hypertension may finally explain this phenomenon. And the answer lies in a factor that affects people of all races and ethnic groups. Read on to find out more.

Rectocele Prolapse Rectocele is a herniation of the tissue wall between the vagina and the rectum. Over time, this tissue wall - also known as the rectovaginal septum - can become weakened resulting in a pelvic organ hernia or pelvic organ prolapse. In this article we will discuss what a rectocele is, what the symptoms are, and how it can be treated. What is a Prolapsed Rectocele? A rectocele is a herniation, prolapse, or weakening of the rectovagianl septum (tissue wall between the rectum and the vagina). Rectocele is also commonly known as a posterior vaginal prolapse or a proctocele. This can occur as an isolated injury or gradual weakening of the tissues, or occur as a result of prolonged pelvic floor dysfunction. When the pelvic floor is weakened along with the ligaments and tissues between the vagina and the rectum, it can cause the vaginal and rectal walls to weaken and bulge leading very painful symptoms and other pelvic organ related issues. In severe cases, the vaginal or rectal walls can bulge and protrude from the vaginal opening. Other types of Pelvic Floor Prolapse There are several other types of pelvic organ prolapse that may present themselves in similar ways as rectocele: Cystocele, or anterior vaginal prolapse: occurs when a woman's bladder bulges into the vaginal wallUterine prolapse: occurs when the uterine walls become weakened or unsupported and the uterus bulges into the vaginal wall.Rectal prolapse: occurs when the rectal wall is weakened and protrudes through the anusVault prolapse: occurs when the vaginal vault (top of the vagina) bulges. Pelvic prolapses can vary greatly in their severity and at times, different types may occur simultaneously. What is the Main Cause for a Rectocele? Although the exact cause of a rectocele is unknown, it is most commonly a result of a weakened pelvic floor and often goes hand in hand with excess pelvic pressure and intra abdominal pressure. A woman's pelvic floor can become weak after undergoing physically traumatic experiences such as: childbirth through vaginal delivery, difficulties with vaginal childbirth (if forceps or a vacuum were used, vaginal tearing, or an episiotomy). It is common for women to experience some form of pelvic floor or core weakness related issue postpartum. However, women who have never been pregnant can still develop a rectocele. Other Causes of Rectocele There are several other factors that may lead someone to develop a rectocele. Posterior pelvic organ prolapse can occur as a result of increased, intra-abdominal pressure. Outside of pregnancy, other causes of rectocele and increased pelvic pressure include: Chronic constipationStraining, difficulty in performing bowel movementsChronic cough, pneumonia, or bronchitisHysterectomyPelvic region surgeryImproper heavy lifting techniquesObesityAge

Dr. Justin Marchegiani even gives us a little Mitochondria 101 so we can better understand the concept in this podcast. To function properly, your mitochondria needs certain nutrients, the most essential compound being Acetyl-CoA. This means our body needs to be able to properly digest and break down our fats, carbs, and proteins (which make up the acetyl coenzyme A). Dr. J explains that Candida (yeast overgrowth) and micotoxins can also be major stressors to the mitochondria and our immune system. This can further zap energy, contributing to the chronic fatigue. To support this topic, Dr. J and Dr. Evan Brand are using studies and their own medical experience and research. If you experience chronic or accute fatigue, this is a podcast you don't want to miss. Your mitochondria are the powerhouse of your cells that help you generate atp/energy. Your mitochondria require amino acids, b-vitamins, coq10, carnitine, creatine, and other mitochondrial nutrients to name a few. Candida and mold toxins can stress out your mitochondrial, they can decrease nutrients available to your mitochondria. These candida and mitochondrial toxins can also stress our immune system (th1 and natural killer cells), which continue to take more available nutrients and resources from generating energy. Does smoking cause lung cancer? How could you ever know? The second in a three-part series on causality, I’m joined by Dr. Shoshana Herzig to discuss how Austin Bradford Hill and Richard Doll set out to try and answer this question -- and along the way revolutionized the way we think about what causes disease. In this episode, we’ll talk about the first double-blinded randomized controlled trial, the long shadow of tuberculosis, and why epidemiology is beautiful. Plus, a brand new #AdamAnswers about chest compressions! Please support Bedside Rounds by filling out the listener demographic survey: https://survey.libsyn.com/bedsiderounds Sources: Bost TC. Memory loss may be a normal part of aging, but it may also be caused by dementia or treatable brain conditions. Getting the right diagnosis and care is important. This episode talks about WebMD's article on memory impairment. Forgetfulness is a usual common thing and happens to most people, young or old, including memory champions. Distraction, stress, fatigue, depression, anxiety, absentmindedness, and many other factors may contribute. Luckily, most memory impairment problems are reversible. Temporary episodes of forgetfulness is not an indicator of Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Stages of Memory The article discusses 3 stages of memory: * Encoding – This is when a person takes information in. * Consolidation – When you encode the information you process it so that it gets stored in certain areas of your brain. * Retrieval – When you recite the information. Mine differs from the author. I give memory to four stages or four divisions. First is sensory memory, you use this to figure out your next step and that turns into working memory. Working memory is figuring out the process, how are you going to keep going. Next is short term memory, it is based on your emotions and last is long term memory. When you couple emotion with your memories that really helps with the short term memory. Encoding them into short term memory and eventually encoding it into long term memory. Common Memory Impairment Common memory impairment or brain blips include misplacing frequently used objects. Such as keys or glasses, forgetting why we walked into a room. And periodic difficulty remembering a word we want to say. It is frequently linked to situational factors and normal age-related changes. For most people, mental flexibility starts to become a bit less efficient with each passing decade from our late 20s onward. Memory starts to decline in our late 30s, so it is common to notice more memory problems as we age. Consolidate Your Memory Sleep is when you consolidate your memories. It helps you get rid of your memories and consolidate them. We all think best when we're well rested. A clear, alert brain allows us to focus, learn and remember information, and to be creative. On the other hand, when we're sleepy, we make more mistakes and are less productive. Healthy sleep puts us in the right state of mind to take in information as we go about the day. Not only that, we need a good night's sleep to process and retain that information over the long term. Sleep actually triggers changes in the brain that solidify memories. It strengthens connections between brain cells and transferring information from one brain region to another. Other Causes of Memory Impairment Other causes of memory impairment are stress, anxiety, ADHD, depression, metabolic diseases, alcoholism, vitamin B12 deficiency, infection, and drugs. Episode 101 with Dr. Camille Newton talks about many of the drugs that may cause dementia. Most people don't realize that it's not just only alcoholism but heavy consumption of alcohol. That is one cause of memory impairment. If you have 2 or 3 glasses a night, you might not get tipsy or inebriated but you have all that sugar. All that alcohol in your brain, every night your brain has to fight and get rid of it. Then your brain just gets tired because of this. It has a hard time purging all that alcohol and sugar. Control the Way We Progress and Become Better and Healthier Before you put in those sweets or steaks, here is some food for thought. Research suggests that what we eat might have an impact on our ability to remember and our likelihood of developing dementia as we age. You just have got to be in a position to put your foot down.

An Appalshop Films Documentary Anne Braden: Southern Patriot is a first person documentary about the extraordinary life of this American civil rights leader. Braden was hailed by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail as a white southerner whose rejection of her segregationist upbringing was “eloquent and prophetic. Ostracized as a “red” in the 1950s, she fought for an inclusive movement community and mentored three generations of social justice advocates. Braden’s story explores not only the dangers of racism and political repression but also the power of a woman’s life spent in commitment to social justice. Anne Lewis makes documentary films about social actions, human rights, labor, environmental justice and cultural democracy. She came out of a movement to make media that creates opportunity for social change. Mimi Pickering documentaries often feature women as principle storytellers, focus on injustice and inequity, and explore the efforts of grassroots people to deal with community problems and work for change.
