The Hidden Genome Inside Every CellMost of us learned that mitochondria are the “powerhouse of the cell.”What we didn't learn? They carry their own DNA — and that DNA may hold crucial answers to aging, neurodegeneration, and rare childhood diseases. In this episode of Research Renaissance, host Deborah Westphal speaks with Dr. Stefan Isaac, Assistant Professor at Boston University and 2025 Toffler Scholar, about how mitochondrial DNA is organized, regulated, and why its dysfunction may contribute to diseases ranging from Leigh syndrome to Alzheimer's.
Urolithin A (MitoPure)--Mitophagy, Muscle Recovery, Immunity, and Skin Health: Dr. Brad Currier, clinical trial manager at Timeline, a Swiss biotech company, details urolithin A (MitoPure), a postbiotic derived from pomegranate precursors that most people cannot produce due to microbiome differences. Currier explains MitoPure's mechanism—stimulating mitophagy to recycle dysfunctional mitochondria—and reviews evidence from multiple clinical trials. He reveals a Sports Medicine study in elite male distance runners showing reduced creatine kinase and lower perceived exertion, suggesting improved recovery, plus trials in middle-aged and older adults showing improvements in strength, six-minute walk test, and VO2 max at 500 mg–1 g doses. They also cover a Nature Aging immune study reporting rejuvenation of stem-like CD8 T cells with improved mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, ongoing research directions, supplement quality/testing for athletes, and topical urolithin A skincare trials and partnerships, including L'Oréal Lancôme.
Welcome back to The Peptide Playbook! In this episode, I'm joined by my colleague Dr. Robert Frankel, and we dive deep into one of the most exciting topics in anti-aging and wellness right now: mitochondrial health. We break down what mitochondria actually do (in a way that finally makes sense), why they're so critical for energy, aging, and disease—and how peptides like NAD, MOTS-c, and SS-31 may help optimize how your body functions at a cellular level. One of the most fascinating parts? The concept of "exercise in a bottle"—how certain peptides can mimic some of the metabolic benefits of working out by improving energy production, fat metabolism, and even muscle function. We also talk about: Why energy deficiency is at the root of many health issues What "zombie cells" are and how they accelerate aging The real role of free radicals (and why antioxidants alone aren't enough) How to think about peptides safely and strategically This is a powerful, science-backed conversation—but still approachable and practical. As always, this is for educational purposes only—make sure to consult with a qualified professional before starting any treatment. 00:00:00 Intro – Welcome to The Peptide Playbook 00:01:10 Why This Topic Matters (Mitochondria & Aging) 00:03:30 What Are Mitochondria? Most people know NAD+ as a supplement trend. But very few understand what's actually happening inside their skin cells when it runs out or what's stealing it in the first place.By the time you're 45, you've lost half of the molecule that powers virtually every function keeping your skin young. Sadly, it only gets worse from there. The enzyme your skin uses for DNA repair can wipe out up to 90% of what's left after a single afternoon in the sun. This isn't a slow, graceful decline. It's a collapse happening beneath the surface long before the wrinkles appear. In this episode, we will nerd out and break down exactly why NAD+ disappears, who the thieves are, and what the science actually says about getting it back. From the sirtuin-PARP-CD38 trifecta to the zombie cell feedback loop that accelerates the drain with age, this is the most complete picture of NAD+ and skin aging we've put together to date.We also cover the real differences between NMN, NR, and niacin, why the precursor you choose actually matters, and what to stack with it to protect your methylation pathways.Ready to nerd out in this with us?Let's dive in!What's Discussed:(4:00) The number that changes how you think about skin aging.(6:03) What NAD+ actually does and why "rechargeable battery" undersells it.(8:18) The three enzyme families consuming your NAD+ as a substrate.(8:23) Sirtuins: the police of your cells and what they cost you.(9:42) PARPs: the fire brigade and why one sunburn nearly wipes you out.(11:16) CD38: the NAD+ Pac-Man that gets worse with age.(15:10) The five-fold decline: what the 2012 tissue study actually found.(16:15) CD38 and the zombie cell feedback loop driving the decline.(19:39) What the depletion actually looks like in the mirror.(28:04) Why NAD+ decline is reversible & supplementation deep dive.(28:41) NMN: how it works and what the studies actually show.(31:50) NR: the most clinically studied precursor and who it's best for.(33:27) Niacin: the $5 option and why most people can't tolerate it.(38:14) Why timing your NAD+ to your circadian rhythm matters.(38:35) TMG and methylation: what to stack and the two-to-one ratio.Learn more about NAD from our previous podcasts and videos:Previous NAD YouTube Videos:NAD+, Skincare Science + The Future of Skincare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmwYLywwcsA Biohack Your Way to Better Skin - Benefits of NAD Boosting Supplementation for Skincare & Anti-Aging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIz5MvW7X1M Why Your NAD+ Supplement Isn't Helping Your Skin | The Truth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euIj0eLt4Aw The Science Behind NAD+, Link Between NAD+ Skin Aging, Importance of Precursors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmsUeQklYY0 The NAD+ Protocol That Could Reverse Skin Aging (Doctors Won't Tell You) | Dr. Scott Sherr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYJgVSoj_XM Previous NAD Podcasts:NAD 101: Unlocking The Secrets To Youthful Skin: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/nad-101-unlocking-the-secrets-to-youthful-skin/id1552026927?i=1000652231123 The Relationship Between NAD+ and Your Skin, NAD+ Depletion, Bioavailability, Precursors, Sirtuins, and More: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/22-the-relationship-between-nad-and-your-skin/id1552026927?i=1000568088462 The Science Behind NAD+, the Link Between NAD+ and Skin Aging, and the Importance of Precursors: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-science-behind-nad-the-link-between-nad-and/id1552026927?i=1000615122098 Ben Azadi: How NAD+ Helps Reverse Aging + Skin Problems Connected to Deeper Health Issues: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ben-azadi-how-nad-helps-reverse-aging-skin-problems/id1552026927?i=1000662495945 Turn Back the Clock: NAD and Skin Biohacking: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/turn-back-the-clock-nad-and-skin-biohacking/id1552026927?i=1000681105344 Research Studies Mentioned: Age-Associated Changes In Oxidative Stress and NAD+ Metabolism In Human Tissue: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0042357 CD38 Dictates Age-Related NAD Decline and Mitochondrial Dysfunction: https://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/fulltext/S1550-4131(16)30225-7 Senescent cells promote tissue NAD+ decline during ageing via the activation of CD38+ macrophages: https://www.nature.com/articles/s42255-020-00305-3 Enhanced SIRT1 Activity Mitigates UVB-Induced Senescence in Dermal Fibroblasts: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39401943/ Slc12a8 is a nicotinamide mononucleotide transporter: https://www.nature.com/articles/s42255-018-0009-4 The efficacy and safety of β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) supplementation in healthy middle-aged adults: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11357-022-00705-1 Nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide facilitate NAD+ synthesis via enterohepatic circulation: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adl5154 Chronic nicotinamide riboside supplementation is well-tolerated and elevates NAD+ in healthy middle-aged and older adults: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-03421-7 Find more from Young Goose:Use code PODCAST10 to get 10% off your first purchase, and if you're a returning customer use the code PODCAST5 to get 5% off at https://younggoose.comInstagram: @young_goose_skincareHead to younggoose.com/products/youth-body-cream for 20% offBody Cream: Head to younggoose.com/products/youth-body-cream for 20% off
Leyla Muedin, a registered dietitian nutritionist, discusses a UK Biobank analysis published in the Journal of Cachexia, “Sarcopenia and Muscle” (Nov 2025) linking continuous long-term statin use (e.g., Lipitor, Zocor, Crestor) to accelerated declines in grip strength and appendicular lean mass compared with never-users. Among 35,557 with follow-up data, grip strength declined by a mean 0.315 kg/year and appendicular lean mass by 0.057 kg/year in statin users; findings persisted after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, comorbidities, and a pharmacogenomic statin-response score. Leyla notes possible mechanisms (CoQ10/mevalonate pathway effects, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, calcium disruption, insulin resistance) and advises monitoring musculoskeletal health, supporting diet and regular physical activity, while not interpreting results as a reason to stop prescribing statins.

Moira Newiss spent 20 years running hospitals for the UK's National Health Service before her body and mind staged a slow, invisible collapse that no blood panel could explain — and the system she'd devoted her career to had nothing to offer but a prescription she didn't want to fill. What she found instead was a framework rooted in mitochondrial biology that reframes mental illness, chronic fatigue, and burnout as problems of cellular energy rather than brain chemistry. About the Guest(s): Dr. Chad Woolner is a chiropractic physician who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in utilizing advanced technologies to enhance patient care and wellness, including the use of laser and light-based therapies. Dr. Woolner has established himself as a credible voice in chiropractic care and is widely recognized for his expertise in integrating innovative treatments. Dr. Andrew Wells is an accomplished expert in natural health solutions, with a strong focus on the synergy between technology and healthcare. He collaborates closely with Dr. Woolner in providing insights into effective health practices, including weight loss strategies through cutting-edge light-based therapies. Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of the Laser Light Show, Dr. Chad Woolner and Dr. Andrew Wells discuss ground-breaking developments in light-based therapies, specifically focusing on weight and fat loss. The conversation revolves around Erchonia's latest technological advancements that promise to transform traditional approaches towards managing obesity and promoting healthier lifestyles. They introduce the new Zerona Z8 laser—an FDA-cleared, high-intensity violet laser designed to increase cellular energy and stimulate weight loss, offering new hope and tools for both individuals and practitioners. The episode delves into the rising challenges and perceptions surrounding obesity, weight loss interventions, and the growing popularity of GLP-1 medications. It highlights the importance of integrating tools like Zerona lasers with holistic lifestyle changes for a sustainable weight loss solution. Dr. Woolner and Dr. Wells stress the critical role of cellular energy in weight management and how addressing mitochondrial dysfunction can mitigate the obesity epidemic facing many. They advocate for an energy-first approach that prioritizes physiological health to facilitate consistent long-term behavioral shifts in diet and exercise regimens, ultimately fostering a more balanced and sustainable lifestyle. Key Takeaways: Light-based therapies, like the new Zerona Z8 laser, can revolutionize weight loss treatments by enhancing cellular energy and supporting long-term lifestyle changes. Chronic health issues and weight management difficulties often stem from insufficient cellular energy, making it essential to address mitochondrial dysfunction. The popular notion of light therapies as quick-fixes for melting fat fails to capture the full potential of these technologies as catalysts for broader health improvements. Incorporating tools like lasers with lifestyle adjustments, such as breath work and optimizing circadian rhythms, provides a comprehensive approach to weight loss. A successful weight loss strategy intertwines modern technological interventions with patient dedication to lifestyle changes, offering both immediate and enduring health benefits. Notable Quotes: "The paradigm shift with light-based therapies isn't just about melting away fat, but how they can act as a catalyst for sustainable energy and behavior change." - Dr. Chad Woolner "Patients often lack the physiological energy needed to make lasting lifestyle changes, and that's where therapies like the Zerona laser play a crucial role." - Dr. Andrew Wells "It's about solving mitochondrial dysfunction to empower and enable individuals to make healthier choices consistently." - Dr. Chad Woolner "When you increase your body's capacity to produce more energy, it not only supports weight loss but overall wellness and quality of life." - Dr. Andrew Wells "Using the Zerona laser as a catalyst can completely change someone's energy and mindset, paving the way for long-term health benefits." - Dr. Chad Woolner Resources: Erchonia's Zerona Lasers Book: Brain Energy by Dr. Chris Palmer Dr. Andrew Huberman podcast on circadian rhythm Enhance your understanding of cutting-edge weight loss technologies by listening in on this enlightening episode. Stay tuned for more insights from Dr. Chad Woolner and Dr. Andrew Wells on the Laser Light Show, revealing how innovative therapies and holistic approaches can transform health practices.
80% of all autoimmune diseases occur in women, and no one can explain why. Cancer cells are always present in your body, but it's only when your T cells go into energy deficit that cancer starts overtaking the system. And here's what almost no one is talking about: the mitochondria in your immune cells are the reason MS, chronic fatigue, neurodegeneration, and even cancer progression happen when they happen. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Anurag Singh, MD, PhD immunologist who spent 20 years studying mitochondria and screened 4000 compounds from pomegranates to discover one molecule that changes cellular aging. We break down immunometabolism, the emerging field linking immune health and metabolism, why your T regulatory cells are the CEOs of your immune system, how mitochondrial dysfunction in immune cells triggers autoimmune conditions, and why rejuvenating mitochondria can get your immune system in check to defeat cancer. Dr. Eric Gordon—Medical Director at Gordon Medical Associates and President of the Gordon Medical Research Center—joins Dr. Karlfeldt for a wide-ranging conversation on what it really takes to help “end-of-the-line” patients with complex, chronic illness. With 45+ years of clinical experience and deep involvement in research on ME/CFS, Lyme disease, and autoimmune conditions, Dr. Gordon offers a grounded, clinician-to-clinician look at why so many patients remain undiagnosed, misunderstood, or stuck despite seeing multiple providers. In this episode, you'll learn why chronic illness is rarely “in the book,” and why recovery often requires detective work across toxin load, infectious burden, genetics, immune dysfunction, and environmental triggers. Dr. Gordon breaks down how modern medicine's siloed specialties can miss multi-system patterns—and why tools like advanced testing and AI may become essential to sift exploding research (like microbiome discoveries) into something clinically useful. They also explore the evolving landscape of long COVID research, the importance of identifying patient subtypes (instead of lumping everyone into one diagnosis), and what this shift could mean for faster, more affordable healing. If you've tried the “usual” protocols and still don't improve, this conversation reframes the journey: why complexity doesn't mean hopelessness—and how the next wave of systems biology, smarter data-mining, and targeted interventions may finally change the game for chronic fatigue, Lyme, mold illness, and beyond.Key Topics CoveredWhy “complex chronic illness” usually isn't a simple diagnosis—and why that matters for treatmentThe “end-of-the-line” patient: what it means when you've already seen many good doctorsHow toxin load, infections, genetics, and terrain combine into a personalized illness patternWhy medical silos and protocol-based care often fail complex patientsMold exposure and mycotoxin sensitivity: why environment can block progressMast cell activation and reactivity: why treatment tolerance can be a major barrierThe microbiome information explosion—and why AI is becoming necessary to interpret itGarbage-in/garbage-out in AI: why context and quality data still matterLong COVID as a turning point: validating post-viral illness and advancing immune researchThe importance of subtyping ME/CFS, long COVID, and Lyme presentations to find what actually works _______________________________The Karlfeldt Center offers the most cutting-edge and comprehensive Lyme therapies. What if the cancer treatment that works best is the one pharmaceutical companies can't profit from? What if one of the cancer treatments that works best is the one the pharmaceutical companies can't profit from?!Dr. Katie sits down again with Professor Thomas Seyfried to explore why the medical system resists alternative approaches to a disease that claims over 1,700 lives daily in the U.S., and what's actually driving cancer at the cellular level. They reveal a specific therapeutic strategy that targets both fuels cancer cells depend on to survive.Dr. Seyfried explains how cancer isn't the genetic lottery you've been led to believe, it's a metabolic condition with a metabolic solution. You'll learn why your body's normal cells thrive on completely different fuel than cancer cells do, and how a compound called DON (a glutamine antagonist) combined with therapeutic ketosis creates conditions where healthy cells flourish while cancer cells can't survive. Dr. Nasha Winters shares her extraordinary journey from being diagnosed with terminal cancer at age 19 to becoming a pioneering force in metabolic oncology. Given just months to live and unable to receive chemotherapy, she embarked on a quest to understand cancer that led to groundbreaking insights about its metabolic and mitochondrial origins.Winters challenges the conventional genetic theory of cancer, explaining how our bodies' "terrain" - influenced by nutrition, stress, toxins, and lifestyle - creates an environment where cancer either thrives or struggles. She details how modern life's rapid changes overwhelm our mitochondria, potentially leading to cancer when these cellular powerhouses can't properly process information. Most provocatively, Dr. Winters reveals how aggressive cancer treatments can sometimes strengthen cancer by killing weaker cells while allowing stronger ones to thrive. She advocates for a balanced approach combining targeted conventional treatments with strategies to strengthen the body's terrain. The conversation explores her innovative projects including a metabolic cancer data platform, specialized supplements, a research laboratory, and plans for an integrative oncology hospital on an organic farm in Arizona - all designed to revolutionize how we understand and treat cancer.BIG IDEACancer isn't simply genetic bad luck but rather a metabolic disease influenced by our environment, nutrition, and lifestyle - and by understanding these factors, we can dramatically improve prevention and treatment outcomes.Narsha Winters contact info•Website: https://www.drnasha.com/•Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drnashawinters/•X: https://twitter.com/drnashawinters•LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nasha-winters-796374b6/•Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drnashainc•YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DrNashaInc•Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drnashawinters•Book: The Metabolic Approach to CancerSend Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda shares his groundbreaking approach to chronic pain management that centers on fixing metabolic dysfunction rather than simply masking symptoms with medication. Drawing from his background in anesthesiology, pain management, addiction medicine, and technology, Dr. Padda explains the underlying connection between chronic pain and metabolic inflammation. He details how his patients achieve extraordinary results—85-90% of type 2 diabetics resolving their condition within three months and dramatic reductions in pain medication needs within weeks—through targeting the root metabolic causes rather than treating symptoms.Dr. Padda challenges conventional medical approaches, revealing how our healthcare system's perverse incentives often work against patient healing. He discusses how vegetable oils contribute to inflammation, reduced bonding hormones, and fertility issues, while explaining why pain management must address insulin resistance, omega fatty acid imbalances, and mitochondrial dysfunction. His innovative assessment tools help patients visualize their health status and track improvement, creating a path to healing that addresses the true causes of chronic pain.BIG IDEAIn 99% of chronic pain cases, the reason pain recurs is that the underlying issue of metabolic dysfunction hasn't been fixed—not because patients have a deficiency of pain medication.Gurpreet Singh Padda Contact InfoLinkedIn: -paddaPadda Institute Website: https://painmd.tv/Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. In this solo episode of The Red Light Report, Dr. Mike Belkowski shares something truly special — an in‑depth solo episode based on his presentation at the Quantum Health Retreat in Nashville at the end of June: The Bioenergetics of Methylene Blue. However, this episode is the expanded version of that presentation with extra context and nuance. This lecture is Dr. Mike's attempt to pull back the curtain on methylene blue, a re‑emerging powerhouse compound that's reshaping how we think about energy, longevity, and mitochondrial health; but from a quantum perspective, You'll learn how methylene blue works as both an electron donor and acceptor, how it synergizes with red light therapy to amplify mitochondrial output, and why supporting your mitochondria is foundational for longevity, disease prevention, and peak vitality. Mike explores bioenergetics, oxidative stress, structured water, electron tunneling, spin‑dependent biochemistry, and photodynamic therapy — all explained in an accessible, engaging way with plenty of practical takeaways. Key Topics Covered: Methylene blue as a quantum biological agent: electron flow, redox cycling, and mitochondrial support. How methylene blue plus red light therapy can increase neuronal ATP production by up to 80%. Practical dosing guidance, timing tips, and safety considerations. Quantum concepts like electron tunneling, photonic resonance, and structured water—and how they relate to your health. The importance of sun exposure, melanin, and building your “solar callus.”
In this deeply informative solosode, Dr. Mike Belkowski guides listeners through a comprehensive exploration of mitochondrial function and its profound connection to aging and longevity. Kicking off with a brief reflection on recent guest episodes and a teaser about an upcoming podcast rebrand, Mike then dives into a newly released scientific article from Cell Communication and Signaling titled “Mitochondrial Dysfunction in the Regulation of Aging and Aging-Related Diseases.” Mike reads and unpacks dense but crucial sections from the paper, including: The Structure and Function of MitochondriaHe outlines the intricacies of the electron transport chain, supercomplexes, and mitochondrial DNA, emphasizing their roles in energy production, oxidative stress, and aging. Key Cellular Processes Affected by MitochondriaTopics covered include metabolic regulation, calcium and ROS homeostasis, mitochondrial biogenesis, and autophagy, tying them all back to aging and degenerative diseases. Modulating Mitochondrial Function to Slow AgingMike highlights emerging research on mitochondrial nutrients (like CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, carnitine), lifestyle interventions (exercise, diet, intermittent fasting), and breakthrough therapies such as mitochondrial transfer and replacement therapies. He also introduces BioLight's new supplement, BioBlue Fountain of Youth, emphasizing its inclusion of methylene blue or leucomethylene blue, urolithin A, adaptogenic mushrooms, shilajit, and PQQ—all aimed at mitochondrial optimization. The episode wraps with a powerful message: movement is medicine. Exercise remains the most accessible and potent strategy to boost mitochondrial health naturally. Mike encourages listeners to stay active, get sunlight, engage in red light therapy, and embrace the mitochondrial lifestyle. In this episode of Experience Miracles, Dr. Tony Ebel sits down with Mary Coyle, an expert in homotoxicology and bioregulatory therapeutics, to explore why traditional detox approaches often fail and how to activate the body's own healing mechanisms. Mary shares her personal journey with her son's autism diagnosis and reveals that detoxification pathways must be opened before any detox can be truly effective. Together, they break down the four levels of healing, explain mitochondrial dysfunction in autism, and provide parents with clear signs to watch for during recovery. This episode is essential for parents who have tried multiple interventions without lasting results, offering the missing piece: activating the body's own bioregulatory systems.Key Topics & Timestamps[00:08:00] Mary's Personal Story: Her Son's Journey[00:10:00] Understanding Elimination Pathways[00:14:00] Going Deeper Than "Expensive Urine"[00:21:00] The Four Levels of Healing[00:26:00] Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Autism[00:27:00] Signs of Cellular Recovery[00:32:00] Case Study: Evan's Recovery[00:36:00] Homeopathic Approach & Safety[00:42:00] Root Cause vs. Surface Treatment[00:50:00] Emotional & Behavioral Healing Reactions[00:54:00] Practitioner Communication & Parent EducationGet Connected with Mary https://realchildcenter.com/(Mary's Disclaimer: The suggestions are for your personal use only. It’s time for a rebroadcast of a wonderful interview with my old friend, Dr. Casey Means, where she talked about the launch of her book, Good Energy. It has been a year since we talked on the eve of her book launch, which was just about to go number one and become a New York Times bestseller, and in other news, Dr. Casey has just been appointed to become the Surgeon General of the United States of America. Amazing news, a bit controversial these days since everything in politics is controversial, but long time listeners know that I steer completely clear of politics on this show, however I did want to give a plug for Dr. Casey and encourage you to listen to this interview if you didn't hear it the first time around, as she now rises to the highest position in America for doctors. In this episode, you will learn all about Dr. Casey Means’ book Good Energy: The Surprising Connection Between Metabolism and Limitless Health, which she wrote with her brother, Calley Means, and hear her talk about the broken medical industrial complex—a subject that is of deep significance for her since (as she talked about in her first appearance on the show) she used to be a dutiful doctor, a highly trained throat surgeon who was just trying to do her best, until she realized how dysfunctional the whole system was. She had a realization: no one was really getting better. They were, however, coming in for more surgery, and this sparked her decision to pursue a career in the alternative health world instead, an issue that only became more important and personal to her after she experienced the deep pain and frustration of watching her mother die of a preventable disease. This is a great episode to listen to if you want to learn about all the nuances of our profit-driven medical system, the science and details of how mitochondrial function essentially represents the essence of our health, why mitochondrial dysfunction represents the whole cause of all disease, the scary statistic about Americans and metabolic syndrome risk factors that shocked me, and more! Casey Means, MD, Surgeon General of the United States of America, is a Stanford-trained physician, the Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of metabolic health company Levels, and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention. Her mission is to maximize human potential and reverse the epidemic of preventable chronic disease by empowering individuals with tech-enabled tools that can inform smart, personalized, and sustainable dietary and lifestyle choices. Check out her website and visit CaseyMeans.com/goodenergy to read her best-selling book, Good Energy. TIMESTAMPS: Sixty-eight percent of Americans are classified as metabolically unhealthy. [03:08] It's a totally unstainable path that we are on as a country. [09:04] After becoming a head and neck surgeon, Dr. Means realized that she was not improving people's health. She wanted to focus on prevention. [12:00] Cancer is a metabolic dysfunction. We are focusing on the wrong problem. [14:41] The health care industry is fast growing and it makes more money when you are sick than when you are well. [20:02] Everything in moderation is a very bad way to look at diet. [29:48] There is such a thing as bad food. [35:19] You need to understand your own body and read the signals your body sends to you. [36:23] We have normalized not feeling well, that we don't notice it. [41:55] When we eat processed foods, they are not benign. It's more than just calories. [46:53] The ingredients in the processed foods trigger your desire to overeat. The bigger the glucose spike, the bigger the crash [53:54] High fructose corn syrup is in so many foods and is very problematic. [58:39] There are five foods that you want to include to support your mitochondrial function. [01:01:36] In a few months, if you follow those suggestions, your markers on your blood tests will show a huge difference if you were pre-diabetic. [01:09:24] Why isn't the medical system focused more on prevention? [01:15:03] LINKS: Brad Kearns.com BradNutrition.com B.rad Whey Protein Superfuel - The Best Protein on The Planet! What if mitochondria weren't just energy engines — but conscious beings guiding your survival and evolution? In this episode, Dave Asprey sits down with Zach Bush, MD, to uncover a radical new science of cellular intelligence. Together, they reveal how your mitochondria, microbiome, and genetic memory do far more than support survival—they actively shape consciousness, drive healing, and accelerate human evolution. You'll discover why chronic disease, fatigue, brain fog, and emotional trauma often trace back to lost cellular communication—and how restoring that network can unlock radical resilience, deeper energy, and true longevity. Through the lens of soil health, vibrational biology, light frequencies, and ancient microbial wisdom, Zach Bush shows why the future of biohacking demands reconnection to the deeper intelligence already alive inside you. What You'll Learn in This Episode: • How mitochondria act as conscious messengers—not just energy factories—and why that changes everything about health and aging • Why rebuilding gut microbiome intelligence strengthens immune function, brain health, and emotional resilience • How disrupted cellular communication fuels chronic inflammation, autoimmune disease, and premature aging • How emotional trauma imprints onto genetic expression and triggers mitochondrial collapse • Why viruses and bacteria serve as evolutionary partners—not enemies—and how they upgrade your biology • How “cellular safety” activates healing, regeneration, and peak human performance • How carbon cycles, soil health, and light frequencies repair DNA and extend human lifespan • Simple daily practices that rebuild cellular coherence, boost energy, and reconnect you to your innate intelligence This conversation will rewire how you think about health, disease, and human potential—giving you the tools to upgrade your biology at the deepest level. **Check out Zach's exclusive offer for The Human Upgrade listeners at https://intelligenceofnature.com/ and use code ‘DAVE10” for a discount!** SPONSORS - ARMRA | Go to https://tryarmra.com/ and use the code DAVE to get 15% off your first order. - Apollo Neuro | To get an Apollo wearable, go to https://apolloneuro.com/Dave and save 15%. Story at-a-glance Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key driver of neurodegeneration, with research showing that a single resting cortical neuron requires 4.7 billion ATP molecules every second for energy When mitochondria lose their efficient shape, electrons escape and form reactive oxygen species (ROS), triggering cellular damage and stress that particularly affects brain cells Research shows 42% of adults over 55 develop dementia by age 95, with projected new cases expected to double from 514,000 in 2020 to 1 million by 2060 Mitochondria act as cellular calcium buffers — when this function fails, calcium floods cells and triggers the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, leading to widespread neuron death Key mitochondrial health strategies include eliminating seed oils, optimizing carbohydrate intake, reducing environmental toxin exposure, getting proper sun exposure and boosting NAD⁺ levels through supplements
Story at-a-glance Suppression of mitochondrial ATP production prevents apoptosis and activates the NLRP3 inflammasome, a key player in inflammation and disease Inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) lead to changes in mitochondrial cristae structure and retention of cytochrome c, which is necessary for NLRP3 activation but not sufficient on its own Activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome requires two signals, one of which is mitochondrial, highlighting the complexity of its regulation Diverse NLRP3 activators share the ability to suppress apoptosis, allowing damaged cells to survive and contributing to chronic inflammation and cancer Mitochondrial dysfunction is closely linked to inflammation and various diseases, emphasizing the importance of understanding these mechanisms for optimal health
My guest is Dr. Roger Seheult, M.D., a board-certified physician in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, critical care, and sleep medicine at Loma Linda University. We discuss the powerful benefits of light therapy, including infrared light, red light, and sunlight, for improving mitochondrial function in all the body's organs. We also explore ways to reduce the risk of influenza, colds, and other illnesses that affect the lungs, sinuses, and gut.
