The Tallis Scholars' acclaimed series of recordings of the Masses of Josquin Desprez is one of the great milestones to the catalogue. Featuring what may be the last Mass the composer wrote, the Missa Mater Patris, along with a Mass not by Josquin but once thought to have been by him, the penultimate volume certainly raises some fascinating questions! To discuss them, The Tallis Scholars' founder and director Peter Phillips joined Editor Martin Cullingford for this Gramophone podcast - which features excerpts from the album, available on Gimell, which was named an Editor's Choice in the November 2019 issue of the magazine. We revisit that podcast 'From the Archive'.

What happens when a piece by Monteverdi finds its way to its original concert hall?In the third episode of season 3 of the Early Music Podcast, Tim Carter introduces us to Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), an Italian composer and contemporary of Girolamo Frescobaldi, who is considered one of the creators of opera and, with Orfeo, the author of the first masterpiece of the genre. From Florence to Venice, passing through Mantua, this third episode evokes the privileged link between architecture and music and evokes the scenic dimension of the works of Monteverdi and his contemporaries. To go further >CREDITSguest Tim Carter, musicologistinterview & editing Andrew Burnproduction REMAcredits music Platée, Act 1, Orage - Jean-Philippe Rameauperformed by Les Talens Lyriques, dir. This is inspired by the daily rituals of the Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, which formed the basis of the earliest Christian services particularly in the monastic tradition. The music centres on medieval chant and the Renaissance vocal polyphony that arose from this tradition, with complementary choral works from contemporary composers, recorded specially for Radio 3 by the Tallis Scholars, directed by Peter Phillips. You can find details of the broadcasts on the BBC Radio 3 website.

Kate Molleson talks to the pianist Anne Queffelec about one of her life’s passions, Satie, the clarity she observes in French music, and how writing is helping her during lockdown. The musicologist Jillian C. Rogers, author of a new book ‘Resonant Recoveries: French Music and Trauma Between the World Wars’, describes how sound played a role in healing throughout the interwar period, and draws parallels with today's world during the Covid-19 pandemic. As the Endellion Quartet announces its retirement, we speak to violinist Andrew Watkinson and cellist David Waterman about the joy of playing card games during concert intervals, arguments over concert attire, and more than four decades of life together inside the ensemble. And following the recent announcements of plans to ease lockdown restrictions, we ask musicians on the ground to share their expectations and fears for performance as well as what the roadmap might mean for musical activity. We hear from the Afrobeat band leader and educator, Dele Sosimi; solo horn with the City of Hull Band, Wendy Orr; and soprano with the Tallis Scholars, Amy Haworth.

Richard and Eric take a look at an article about the late Robert Shaw composed in 2006 by Peter Phillips (conductor of the Tallis Scholars) entitled "The Cult of the Conductor". Phillips briefly analyzes the methodology of Shaw as well as the choral outcomes that arise from such (perceived) methods. Though they discuss the article in full, the guys primarily focus on Phillips's title and premise. Is there such a thing that can be seen as a "cult of the conductor," and what could that possibly look like? A lot of wonderful choral insights here, woven around two preeminent, contemporary choral conductors.Phillips, P. "The Cult of the Conductor." Sacred Music. 25 November 2018 | Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe | Palo Alto, Calif. Hunger is something you can’t help but experience: not just occasionally, but over and over again, like an alert on your phone you can snooze, but never dismiss. No matter how good your Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll be hungry again the next morning (if not rummaging for a turkey and stuffing sandwich at midnight!) But does this relentless demand of our bodies for food reflect anything about the needs of our spirit? That’s right: it’s time to talk about our hungry hearts. After getting a degree in English and Film Studies at the University of Kent at Canterbury followed by post-grad work in Film Theory and despite serious attempts to work in the film industry, Donald ended up in the early music scene in London. He claims he was in the right place at the right time and joined Tallis Scholars in 1985 and by 1988 when he was a founding member of The Orlando Consort. The Orlando Consort rapidly achieved a reputation as one of Europe s most expert and consistently challenging groups performing repertoire from the years 1050 to 1550. The unique imagination and originality of their programming together with their superb vocal skills has marked the Consort out as the outstanding leaders of their field. More recently, Donald has been able to combine his work with the ensemble by creating a vocal score to accompany the film called Voices Appeared, to accompany Carl Dreyer's film, The Passion of Joan of Arc. The Orlando Consort has performed live with the Voices Appeared and The Passion of Joan of Arc for early music and film fans worldwide.
No-one knows for sure the birth-date of Tudor composer John Sheppard, but it is thought to have been around 500 years ago in 1515-16. Lucie Skeaping marks the 450th anniversary of the Portuguese Renaissance composer, Duarte Lobo. She is joined by scholar and performer Professor Owen Rees of Queen's College, Oxford, who has edited, performed and recorded music by Duarte Lobo. Duarte Lobo was among the foremost Portuguese composers of the early 17th century. He spent most of his life in Lisbon where he became a renowned teacher. He became maestro de capilla at the Hospital Real, Lisbon, and from about 1591 until at least 1639 and was maestro de capilla at Lisbon Cathedral. He was also director of the Seminário de S Bartolomeu, Lisbon. Most Lisbon repertory was destroyed during the great earthquake of 1755, but Duarte Lobo's work survived because four collections of his works were issued by Plantin, one of the prestigious music publishing houses in Antwerp. One of the collections, Liber missarum, made its way to the Bodleian Library in Oxford in 1659, and so works by Duarte Lobo were performed by English enthusiasts of "ancient" music during the 18th and 19th centuries in London. Today's programme will feature recordings by the Choir of Queen's College Oxford directed by Owen Rees, The Sixteen directed by Harry Christophers, and The Tallis Scholars directed by Peter Philips.
Hear the troubled history of Arvo Pärt's radiant choral work 'Magnificat', which will be performed by the Tallis Scholars at the Queen's Hall on Monday 10 August.
Peter Phillips and the Tallis Scholars have specialised in the performance of Renaissance polyphony for over thirty years. They have built a reputation for bringing some of the greatest European church music of the 16th and 17th centuries onto the concert platform. So what has prompted such an enthusiasm? Lucie Skeaping explores with Peter and the group some of the qualities and the ethos of Renaissance polyphony. She learns how working with this music has encouraged the group to find a distinctive sound and performing methodology. The programme includes extracts from some of the Tallis Scholars' many recordings. First broadcast 03/10/2009.

Lucie Skeaping's guest is Peter Phillips, director of the Renaissance choral group the Tallis Scholars, which maintains its world wide popularity 40 years after it was founded. Over the years, many of their 60 or so CD recordings have reached iconic status and Peter will be choosing some of the highlights as he talks about the group's history, the important part it played in the early music revival during the 70s and 80s, and how they are now broadening their horizons by commissioning and performing works by contemporary composers. This programme will also launch the 2014 National Centre for Early Music's Composers' Competition in partnership with The Tallis Scholars and BBC Radio 3.
The singer Donald Greig has established a long career performing with groups such as the Tallis Scholars and the Orlando Consort, of which he is a founder member. Last year he wrote his first novel - Time Will Tell - which recently came out in paperback. It tells parallel stories set in the 1990s world of modern early music performance, and in the 16th century world of Franco-Flemish composers and musicians including Josquin and Ockeghem. Donald Greig talks to Catherine Bott about his novel and selects music featured in the story.

First, let me give my best wishes for 2010 to all of you!! What better way to start the new year than with a brand new mix ánd a brand new design (thanks Ingmar from Planet KL!)? The design change is symbolic, in a way: after publishing a lot of mixes in 2009, all of wich were created for radio broadcast, it is now time to take a further step and start publishing new mixes. "Miserere" is the first of these brand new mixes to be published. "Miserere" has taken its name from the concluding piece: Gregoria Allegri's Miserere, as performed by the Tallis Scholars. While working on this mix, I soon felt that this piece had to be the conclusion, and that it should not be combined with other pieces of music or environmental sounds.--- originally published on Ambientblog --- MISERERE PLAYLIST 0:00 Robert Hampson - Ahead Only the Stars- Vectors, 2009 Touch TO:710:10 Meredith Monk - Liquid Air- Mercy, 2002 Ecm 18291:14 Don Peyote - The Guardian- Eternal Now, 2009 Don Peyote Recordings DPY1CD0043:02 Martin O'Donnell, Michael Salvatori - The Rookie- Halo 3 ODST Soundtrack, 2009 Something Else6:47 Kreng - Slaapliedje- L'Autopsie Phénomenale de Dieu, 2009 Miasmah MIALP0107:16 The Caretaker - I Saw Your Face in a Dream- We'll all go riding on a Rainbow, 200x v/VM Test records VVMTCD157:29 Thomas Köner - 31 46 N 35 12 E Hour Ten- La Barca, 2009 Fario cd099:43 Nigel Samways - City of Gas Streetlamps- Veilleur de Nuit, 2009 Experimedia EXP05110:09 Rafael Anton Irrisarri - Still- Musique Pour Statues Menhirs, 2009 Arbouse recording arbou2612:58 Michel Banabila - Tape (Mix 2)- Changing Structures, 2009 soundcloud13:22 Jóhann Jóhannsson - The Flat- And in the endless Pause there came the sound of Bees, 2009 Type Type64LP16:02 Jónsi & Alex - Sleeping Giant- Riceboy Sleeps, 2009 Parlophone 509999630022017:00 Michel Banabila - Zeer Duister (voor Peter van Cooten)- Not on album, 2007 unreleased17:29 Kreng - Mythobarbital- L'Autopsie Phénomenale de Dieu, 2009 Miasmah MIALP01019:06 Benjamin Dauer - Murmur- Ceci N'Est pas une Pipe, 2009 Public Space Labs PS01021:20 Taylor Deupree - 6 A.M.- Favourite Places 1, 2007 Audiobulb 2007 AB01622:33 Robert Hampson - Ahead- Only the Stars - Vectors, 2009 Touch TO:7124:04 Franz Hautzinger - Deep T.- Gomberg II, 2007 Loewenhertz 01825:25 Franz Hautzinger - Fahne- Gomberg II, 2007 Loewenhertz 01826:20 Murcof - Isaías IV- La Sangre Illuminada, 2009 Intolerancia Records28:11 Exuviae - Wane and Flicker- Intrinsic Luminance, 2009 Endless Ascent ea00730:15 Jónsi & Alex - Boy 1904- Riceboy Sleeps, 2009 Parlophone 509999630022033:22 Sleep Research Facility - Dark Side of the Lune- Au Clair de La Lune, 2009 Infrequency 00534:05 Else Marie Pade - Illustrations - The Palace of the Sea King- Water-colours of the Sea, 2009 Dacapo Records 8.22654434:44 Netherworld - Jostedaal- Zaum, 2009 Psychonavigation Records PSY02937:02 Else Marie Pade - Illustrations - The Palace of the Sea King- Water-colours of the Sea, 2009 Dacapo Records 8.22654437:41 Ronald van der Meijs - Under the Dream- Private collection, 2009 unreleased39:05 Lawrence English - Quiet Planigale- Favourite Places 2, 2009 Audiobulb AB02643:27 Clint Mansell - We're Not Programs, Gerty, We're People- Moon OST, 2009 Black Records CMCD00144:15 Elegi - Fandens Bre- Varde, 2009 Miasmah MIACD00945:18 Hildur Gudnadottir - Unveiled- Without Sinking, 2009 Touch TO:7045:31 Hildur Gudnadottir - Elevation- Without Sinking, 2009 Touch TO:7047:35 Last Days - Thoughts of Alice- The Safety of the North, 2009 n5MD MD16650:12 Wixel - Jotunheimen- Norway, 2009 (august) 2009.bandcamp.com51:08 Scanner - Leoni- Consegnaci, Bambina, I Tuoi Occhi, 2009 Horus Music51:37 Robert Henke - Indigo_Transform- Indigo_Transform, 2009 Imbalance Computer Music ICM 0852:46 Mathew Adkins - Sea Soundscape- [60] Project, 2008 Impreintes digitales IMED089855:00 Roland Etzin - On the Bus- Recorded in the Field by…, 2006 Gruenrekorder Gruen03355:13 Elian - It was over, just like that- And Then, One Day, It was over, just like that, 2008 Trans>Parent Radiation Trans01255:20 Murcof - Eugenio- La sangre Iluminada, 2009 Intolerancia Records56:30 The Caretaker - Past Life Regression- Persistent Repetition of Phrases, 2008 History Always Favours the Winners HAFTWDL00357:07 The Gentleman Losers - Oblivion's Tide- Dustland, 2009 City Centre Offices TowerblockCD04357:50 Aaron Ximm (The Quiet American) - Starboard- Maritime Suite, 200x self-released58:00 The Tallis Scholars - Gregorio Allegri - Miserere (3 fragments)- Allegri: Miserere, 2005 Gimsell Records GIMSE401
