Buckingham Palace has announced that Their Majesties The King and Queen will appear on the iconic balcony alongside members of the royal family on May the 5th, as part of events marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day — the momentous occasion which brought an end to the Second World War on the continent. The royals will be joined by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and veterans of the conflict to observe a military procession and a flypast over The Mall, launching four days of commemorative events across the United Kingdom. It will be the first gathering on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony since June 2024, when the King and Queen were accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — during Trooping the Colour, the annual birthday celebration of the Sovereign.

The Princess of Wales spoke about how she told her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis of her shock cancer diagnosis 'in a way that is appropriate' for them.Yesterday she shared the heartbreaking news of her cancer diagnosis in an emotional video. Although her initial surgery in January was thought to have removed a non-cancerous growth, further tests revealed the presence of cancer. The princess spoke about the difficult process of informing her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, "in a way that is appropriate for them."In the video, Kate said, "It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I've had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful. William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok."A BBC Studios insider has confirmed that there was no editing of the video in which Princess Kate announced her cancer diagnosis and that what viewers saw was exactly what was shot by the BBC Studios team. The team, who also covered the King's Coronation and Queen Elizabeth's funeral, had no editorial input into the message conveyed by the Princess and were not involved in the distribution or editing of the video.Chris Ship, ITV News royal editor, suggested that Princess Kate chose to share the news of her cancer treatment in a video message as a way to make it more "personal." During an ITV News segment, host Charlene White asked, "It's a moment she chose to do on video, which is very different from doing it in a written statement. What can we read into that?"Chris responded, saying, "If you look back to how the King revealed his cancer diagnosis earlier this year, it was in a statement from Buckingham Palace. Kate has done it, I am told, in a video form because she wanted to do it in the most personal way possible. Yes, of course, it helps to silence all the conspiracy theorists as well, but she wanted to do the video message and it was a very moving message too. And she wanted to make that very personal statement herself."King Charles III expressed his pride in the Princess of Wales "for her courage in speaking as she did" and has "remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks." Buckingham Palace stated that both the King and Queen Consort "will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time."…Prince Harry and Meghan Markle issued a brief statement, saying, "We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace."James Middleton, the younger brother of Princess Kate, expressed his support for his sister following her public announcement of her cancer diagnosis. The 36-year-old entrepreneur shared a heartwarming childhood photo of himself and Catherine enjoying a sunny walk in nature, with Catherine beaming behind her younger brother. In his Instagram post, James added, "Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too." He also left a simple heart emoji in the comments section of the official announcement video posted on the Prince and Princess of Wales' Instagram page, demonstrating the close bond between the siblings.
The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: Wayne Parry of the Associated Press writes: “An offshore wind power project proposed for New Jersey would have 157 turbines and be located 8.4 miles from shore at its closest point, data released by the federal government Friday shows. It released key details of the project in announcing the environmental review. New Jersey energy regulators approved Atlantic Shores' 1,510 megawatt project in 2021. Missouri—a case which will determine whether officials within the federal government can use their power to coerce social media platforms into censoring speech they unilaterally deem harmful and/or misinformation. While questioning the U.S. Principal Deputy General Brain Fletcher, Justice Samuel Alito seemed to suggest that government pressuring social media companies to do their bidding is violative of the First Amendment, explaining: “The only reason why this is taking place is because the federal government has got Section 230 and antitrust in its pocket…it's got these big clubs available to it—so it's treating Facebook and these other platforms like they are subordinates. Would you do that to The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal or the Associated Press?” The Washington Post writes of oral argument in Murthy v. Missouri: “The Supreme Court seems likely to reject a Republican-led effort that could reshape how politicians communicate with major social media companies—with sweeping consequences for government efforts to secure elections and combat health misinformation. A majority of justices from across the ideological spectrum expressed concern about hamstringing federal government communications with social media platforms on issues such as public health, national security and elections. Brian Fletcher, the principal deputy solicitor general of the United States, argued that the government was legally using its bully pulpit to protect the American public. He warned that overly broad limits on the government's communications with tech companies could harm efforts to protect national security or children's mental health.” You can read more about the WaPo assessment of the case here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/03/18/supreme-court-social-media-biden-missouri/ During oral argument in Murthy v. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (03/18/2024): 3:05pm- While speaking at a campaign event in Ohio over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump predicted that there would be an economic “bloodbath” for the automotive manufacturing industry if he didn't win the 2024 presidential election in November. Of course, Democrats and dishonest members of the media took the statement out of context—instead suggesting that Trump had openly called for a “bloodbath”, or a massacre, should he lose. A selectively trimmed nine-second clip was reposted by numerous social media accounts belonging to members of the political left, including: Biden-Harris HQ and Joe Scarborough (who quickly deleted his post). The strategically edited audio inaccurately makes it appear as though Trump is calling for violence. On Monday, morning shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC all promoted the fake narrative as well. 3:15pm- A montage posted to social media by Tom Elliot features members of the media routinely using the term “bloodbath” to refer to elections. The clip features: Rachel Maddow, Charles Blow, Mika Brzezinski, Van Jones, Jake Tapper, Joe Scarborough, Ali Velshi, Don Lemon, Joy Reid, Brian Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Yang, Simone Sanders, Michael Steele, and David Frum. Notably, Goldberg and Scarborough are now explicitly saying that the use of a term like “bloodbath” is outside the bounds of acceptable behavior. 3:40pm- In response to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign speech in Ohio where he used the term “bloodbath” to describe what could happen economically to the American automobile industry, the Biden-Harris campaign released this over-the-top and purposefully misleading statement: “Tonight, Donald Trump said there would be a 'bloodbath' if he wasn't elected and that if he lost there would be no more elections. After opening the general election by meeting with authoritarian leaders and rallying alongside conspiracy theorists, Donald Trump continues to praise dictators, promise to pardon political violence, and launch racist attacks against Black and brown Americans. It's why last night, Trump's own former Vice President Mike Pence, who Trump supporters called to hang for not overturning the election, came out against Trump. This is who Donald Trump is: a loser who gets beat by over 7 million votes and then instead of appealing to a wider mainstream audience doubles down on his threats of political violence. He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge." 4:05pm- Wayne Parry of the Associated Press writes: “An offshore wind power project proposed for New Jersey would have 157 turbines and be located 8.4 miles from shore at its closest point, data released by the federal government Friday shows. Enthusiastically supported by Green New Deal architects New York Democrat Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Democrat Senator Ed Markey, Biden's Climate Corps would hire 50,000 government workers annually by 2031 with the explicit yet vague mission of ‘tackling climate change.' Any guesses which political party these workers will be supporting? The budget proposal made good on Biden's pledge during the State of the Union to triple the number of workers from the original 20,000 he proposed last fall.” You can read his full opinion piece here: https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/biden-wants-50000-climate-activists-consequences-devastating 5:30pm- Tracy Beanz—Editor-in-Chief for UncoverDC.com & host of the “Dark to Light” podcast—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to breakdown the Supreme Court oral argument in Murthy v. Hannah Sparks writes: “Psychological researchers in Finland have created an assessment to help measure an individual's commitment to principles of social justice and made some surprising findings across the Finnish population—including a negative correlation between progressive ideals and levels of happiness. Their findings, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, suggest other Western nations may see similar patterns among their socially conscious citizens. The second step ‘ok all social media corporations, you're going to have to answer to Congress.'”

As many will already know, it was the youngest child of Prince Louis of Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine who would become a prominent figure in the lives of the modern world of the Windsors. Young Louis Battenberg, later Louis Mountbatten, was known as Dickie to his confidants, and was stung early when his father, First Sea Lord of the British Navy, was removed from his post at the outbreak of WWI because of his German origins. The episode would motivate his son to excel in a Naval career to reclaim the title, and the then-Mountbattens' familial closeness with the House of Windsor would give him an avenue to real political power and influence. Edwina Ashley, future wife of Louis Mountbatten, was born into a family of means, but not of emotional connection. While her grandfather, Sir Ernest Cassel, was kind and involved, her parents left her sister and Edwina to mostly be raised by governesses. After her mother's death, Edwina's father married for a second time to a woman Louis would later describe as "a wicked woman." Edwina was ultimately able to find refuge in her grandfather's home, where as a teenager she became a sophisticated society hostess and a friend to many in the monied elite. Sir Ernest Cassel's death, when Edwina was about 20, made her one of the richest women in England. Upon her engagement to the much-less-rich Louis Mountbatten, Sir Anthony Eden noted in his diary, "Edwina Ashley is engaged to Lord Louis Mountbatten. What a waste." The second child of Prince Louis of Battenberg (later, Louis Mountbatten, Marquess of Milford Haven) and Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine was Princess Louise, born July 14, 1889. While most royal were promptly shuttled into marriage, Louise was an independent, progressive young woman whose heart was set on marrying for love. There were suitors, to be sure, but Louise was insistent that she would never marry a king or a widower, and of course, that the union be based on love. This led her down some blind alleys, most notably with a Scottish portrait and landscape artist living in Paris, whom she met when they worked together at a military hospital during the First World War. Alexander Stuart-Hill was charming but eccentric, and was decidedly not rich. Fearing her family's reaction, Louise kept the pair's engagement secret for two years; by the time she revealed her secret, her parents asked that she delay marriage until the war had ended. After Alexander visited the Mountbattens a few times, earning the nickname 'Shakespeare' from his would-be in-laws, Louis Mountbatten had to sit his poor daughter down and explain to her that there were people called homosexuals, and he believed her fiance was one. It's unclear precisely how this resolved between Louise and Alexander, beyond the fact that the engagement ended in 1918. Princess Louise would find love at last, however, and in a most unexpected place. Sweden's Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf, recent widower of Louise's mother's cousin, visited London in 1923 and took a real shine to Louise, then into her 30s. Sure, he was a widower, and sure, he was destined to be King of Sweden, but at long last, Louise had fallen in love with someone who loved her back. Her new in-laws loved her, and she became the devoted step-mother of Gustav's children. As Princess and then Queen Consort, she was beloved by the people of Sweden for her rejection of royal airs, belief in gender equality and civil rights, humanitarian work during World War II, and democratic reforms to the monarchy. Y'all. I don't know how this has happened again, but Zoom didn't pick up my microphone - clearly I missed a setting even after I reminded Melanie that we needed to check - so I sound like I'm in a tunnel. I hope you can push through the distraction, and I am trying to remind myself that nobody listens to us for our sound quality. Still: annoying. I'm sorry I'm so consistently bad at this part. Anyway, we discuss some things as I echo (echo, echo) my way through the episode: college baseball, Alex's college orientation, and my poor decision-making skills re: orientation shoes.
