Joe Burke is the writer/director of Burt (2025), starring Oliver Cooper and Burt Berger. Shot on a $7,000 budget in just 7 days with a 3-person crew, the story follows Burt, a 69-year old street musician living with Parkinson's, and Sammy, a wayward young man from New York who shows up with the bombshell news that he is Burt's long lost son. The film premiered at Cinequest in San Jose to critical acclaim including the award for Best Narrative Feature: Comedy. It later won Best Picture and Best Acting Ensemble awards at the Phoenix Film Festival. On May 3rd, it had its LA premiere at the Fine Arts theater in Beverly Hills, which drew a packed crowd. Executive Producer David Gordon Green moderated a panel that consisted of Burt, Steven Levy, Oliver, composer Tim Rutili and other cast/crew. Joe Burke has also made a plethora of short films that can be found on his YouTube channel. One of the shorts, Another Cancer Movie (2013), features Burt Berger in a supporting role. Fast forward to Burt (2025) - Burke and Cooper crafted a film loosely based on Burt's real life, shining a light and keeping the focus on Burt's incredible character and not his diagnosis. The decision was made to portray the film in black and white, which adds great depth to the film's already heavy emotional value. Stay tuned for upcoming screening announcements, including another LA showing in June! For more info, visit Burtthemovie.com for up-to-date news. #KellensPettyTalkShow #BurtTheMovie

Phoenix Film Foundation and Phoenix Film Festival executive director Jason Carney comes by to talk about the 25th edition of the acclaimed film festival, and what attendees can expect.
In the world where business and film collide, many states have lucrative film tax incentives that attract big production companies to their sites. Arizona's previous tax program closed its curtains in 2010, but a new initiative, the Arizona Motion Picture Program, went into effect on Jan. 1, 2023, that reinstated film tax credits if a production meets certain criteria. Despite the absence of bigger production companies in the Valley, the community of independent filmmakers is going strong. There are many opportunities in the state to showcase one's work, including through various IFP programs and other events, like the Phoenix Film Festival. This week's episode of Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, explores the latest developments that have taken place behind the scenes in Arizona's film industry – and why residents won't see the immediate effects. Brian recaps the 2024 Phoenix Film Festival with Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, Babes and Thelma
When the Cine Capri theater opened in the mid-1960s, going to the movies was a glamorous event. It was for families, but it was also for lavish decor and a deserved night out. Before the multiplex, one movie a night would be on display. It was a high time for films. And here in Phoenix, George M. Aurelius wanted to expand his theater business as that type of theater was going out of style. They were ready to design a state-of-the-art facility that would blend in well in Uptown Phoenix and also adapt to the changing film distribution style happening at the time. This week on Valley 101, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, we draw back the curtains on the history of the Cine Capri theater, how it adapted in the 2000s and its current status as home to the Phoenix Film Festival. "We are all running from something" is the tagline line for this Maine-made movie. Downeast takes the noir genre and gives it a 2021 update. Lobsterer Tommy lives in a small fishing town that is under the thumb of a gangster. Emma is the sister of his now deceased friend Mikey. The need for answers and closure drive Emma to return to the town. But secrets lie around every lobster trap, and a dangerous game of cat and mouse begins. Never have the stakes been higher. We are facing an environmental crisis,... climate change, soil degradation, plastic pollution and loss of biodiversity. While business is often at the root of these problems, it can also be a part of the solution. Today I am talking with Richard Yelland and Jeremy Black, producers of the documentary, Seeding Change. Richard, a highly accomplished filmmaker and Jeremy, a co-founder of Sambazon, set out to tell the story of Sambazon and their journey over the last 20 years as an organic, fair-trade Acai company. Along the way, they realized there was a bigger story to tell, that of how triple bottom line businesses like Sambazon, are making a positive impact in the world. Today we're talking about all that lead up to the film Seeding Change and, of course, the film itself and its mission to educate consumers on how we can all help save the world one purchase at a time. About Richard Yelland Richard Yelland is an Emmy® Award nominated director and award-winning filmmaker. Powerful visuals and strong performances are a trademark of his projects for Nike, HISTORY, Surfrider Foundation, Sambazon & Outside Television. “Richard is a fantastic filmmaker,” said Oscar® nominee Morgan Spurlock. Richard's documentary film "Floating: The Nathan Gocke Story", was ‘Emerging Documentary' winner at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. His next film, 12 Miles North: The Nick Gabaldon Story, presented by Nike, tells the story of the first-documented African American surfer and is “Unlike any surf film you've ever seen,” according to ESPN. 12 Miles North was a 2014 Webby Award winner and inspired Santa Monica's annual Nick Gabaldon Day. "Sine Qua Non: The Psychology of Big Wave Surfing with Greg Long", Richard's following effort, was an official selection at the Maui Film Festival and winner at the 2014 BLUE Ocean Film Festival. His latest feature, "The Long Way Back" documents the addiction that nearly killed Todd ‘Z Man' Zalkins after the overdose of his longtime friend and Sublime front man, Bradley Nowell. A Best Documentary winner at The Phoenix Film Festival, The "Long Way Back" received exclusive coverage in Rolling Stone and global distribution from The Orchard (SONY). Richard received his Emmy nomination for “Pool,” a PSA he wrote and directed for the Life Rolls On Foundation featuring wheelchair "pool skater" Darwin Holmes. About Jeremy Black Jeremy Black is a co-founder of Sambazon Acai. Taking the leap from a successful career as a financial planner, Jeremy joined brother Ryan Black (CEO) and friend Ed Nichols in early 2000 to introduce açaí to the U.S.market. In addition to helping create global awareness and demand for an unknown fruit, the team pioneered a sustainable business model in the Amazon to import organic, fair trade superfoods. Jeremy was a key player in Sambazon's rapid growth from startup to a $100+ Million dollar global brand. From meager beginnings of one product at a handful of juice bars around Southern California, Jeremy spearheaded the development of the brand, the products and the marketing for a full portfolio of products in frozen, juice, energy and supplement categories that are now sold in health food stores, juice bars and conventional grocery stores across the globe. Over the past 17 years, Jeremy helped the Sambazon team create an entirely new category in the natural foods category and a business that creates positive socio-economic and environmental change. As an avid surfer, yogi and snowboarder, Sambazon has become a way of life for Jeremy, providing organic energy for worldwide travels and active pursuits. This year's DisneyNature takes us to the south pole for a coming-into-fatherhood story. “Penguins” follows the trials and triumphs of an Adélie penguin named Steve. He's on a quest to build a nest, get the girl, and raise a family. This arguably is DisneyNature's most ambitious animal documentary to date, with various teams shooting in the harsh Antartic climate of the course of three years for a total of 900 shooting days. Producer Roy Conli joined us for a special advanced screening at the Phoenix Film Festival. Tuesday and I sat down with Conli after the film to get the inside scoop on how Steve's story came together. Never miss a review by subscribing. The Hidden Gems Podcast (The Best Short Stories You've Never Heard)
Craving noir? Dig in and find out what happens when a down-on-his-luck reporter gets caught in the cross-hairs of the one woman he's never been able to forget. Is it love? Or does she have an ulterior motive that just might get him killed? I'm your host, Cathy McCarthy, but I also write fiction under the pseudonym C. Mack Lewis and this is my short story. I was born in South Jersey, the land of Silk City diners, nuclear plants, corn fields and the Jersey Devil. My youth was spent reading voraciously, everything from Trixie Belden's (in the vain hope that Jim would slip Trixie the tongue) to my Aunt Mary Ellen's steamy bodice-ripping novels to anything in the stack of books my dad brought home from the library every Saturday, which got me hooked on the novels of Robert Ludlum and Donald E. Westlake. After earning a degree in Marketing at Auburn University, I spent the next five years in the business world, which is a polite way of saying that I had eleven jobs in a five year period, including door to door sales, skip tracing people who didn't want to be found, repossessing cars and collecting on defaulted student loans. During this five-year period, I did an in-depth study of abnormal psychology and sociopathic behavior - and then I divorced him.I didn't have enough money for therapy, so I decided to go to medical school where I earned a degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine. That kept me occupied for the first two years and then I had what I refer to as a 'walking nervous breakdown'. The school psychologist, Terry Murphy (thank you!) helped put me back together and I finished the last two years with weekly therapy and a healthy dose of legal pharmaceuticals. My two-year surgical residency in Buffalo, New York introduced me to a new world of human behavior, including junkies, addicts, criminals, punks, S&M beauty queens and angry housewives with ice picks.Upon graduation, I moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where I moved into my parent's guest room (my standard of living sky-rocketed!) and I took a loan to open a private practice so I could (finally!) be my own boss. I've been in practice since 2000 and I've made Phoenix magazine's 'Top Doc' list in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. I am passionate about podiatry and helping people who suffer from foot pain. I write the blog 'Podiatry Shoe Review', which is dedicated to helping people find good-looking shoes that are good for your feet and are pathology specific. With the money from my loan to start the practice, I hired and an old-fashioned matchmaker to find me a decent man with a career. She did find me a lovely man whom I dated for a year and a half - and then I met my husband, whom I adore.I love being a podiatrist and I am not ready to quit my day gig to become a full-time writer - mostly because I think I would go bat-shit crazy without the grounding (and humbling) force of dealing with the complex, subtle and fascinating world of feet. No, I do not have a foot fetish, but one does become fond of feet when they start paying for your mortgage and vacations. My screenplay OH BROTHER won the Phoenix Film Festival screen writing competition in 2005 and was optioned by Gold Circle Films in 2008. I'm the author of GUNNING FOR ANGELS and BLACK MARKET ANGELS, which are the first two books in THE FALLEN ANGELS TRILOGY and I am currently working on the third and final edition, THE ANGEL WORE BLACK. I've recently published THE FIX & OTHER SHORT STORIES on Kindle because I decided that an ebook online was a better place to store my short stories than in a box in the basement.I hope you enjoy my stories! They were born from my passion for storytelling and my demented sense of what constitutes a grand ole time. For more information on my books, click on https://cmacklewis.com/

'Palacios' artfully explores race relations, stereotypes, and friendship. While seemingly simple at first glance, the layers in this film will keep you thinking for days. In our final film review from the Phoenix Film Festival 2018, we explore the inner meanings behind the story.

We missed "The Long Dumb Road" at Sundance but we're so excited it came to the Phoenix Film Festival. We have lots of thoughts on this one. Grab your drink of choice and press play! We're ready to take this review on the road!

Phoenix Film Festival 2018 is in full swing. We start our reviews with an Arizona made film: "Coalesce: A City Composed." The first feature-length film by Joshua Provost, the documentary shows Phoenix through the eyes of a painter and musician. For this film, grab something mellow, pop on your headphones and drift away into the hidden beauty of Phoenix, Arizona.
Phoenix Film Festival 2018 has upped its foreign film game this year. With so many strong entries it's hard to know what to pick. But we're both glad we decided to see "Die Beste Aller Welten" -- or "The Best of All Worlds." Like an Austrian version of "The Florida Project" we found this film touching, funny, and heartrending all at once.
