On May 5th, 1987, 24-year-old Christine Lester left her home in Arizona to go shopping and was never heard from again. In this podcast I am proud to have my prep school roommate joining us. Colonel Lawrence Yazzie and I met on the first day of basic training at the United States Air Force Academy Prep School back in July of 1995. We stayed up too long that first night w/ me asking Yaz about growing up on a reservation. He was just as enthralled w/ me being a Catholic from Kentucky. We have been tight friends ever since. Yaz (as he is called by his friends) was one of the first native americans to play Division 1 basketball. In our conversation he tells us how he got good at basketball while growing up in the Arizonan desert. He talks about why he chose Air Force and the challenges of playing there. Yaz was a 3 point sniper and he talks about coming off the bench cold at the end of games to try and bring his team back. We also touch on him playing with his brother in college and the time he infamously made Sportscenter. In 2018, a judge ruled in the Yazzie/Martinez lawsuit that New Mexico was failing to provide an equitable education to students who are low-income, Native American, have disabilities or are English language learners. This means that the state is in direct violation of the education clause in the New Mexico State Constitution.

Native communities have land management objectives that stem from traditional ecological knowledge and deep connections to land. Jaime Yazzie has been asking how traditional knowledge held within her Diné community can inform management in Navajo Nation forests. Yazzie's work on Tribal forests emphasizes Diné concepts of kinships and here she explains how she works to incorporate these concepts into management objectives. Jamie Yazzie was 31 years old when she went missing in June 2019. She was last seen in Pinon, Arizona within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. By all accounts, Jamie was seen as a hard-working mother of three young boys, she was a medical assistant with dreams to further her education and become a nurse, and she was described as dedicated and known to be very reliable. Dr. Melanie Yazzie is Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota (starting in the fall of 2022) and coauthor of Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation and The Red Deal: Indigenous Action to Save the Earth, both of which came out in 2021. She specializes in Navajo/American Indian history, political ecology, Indigenous feminisms, queer Indigenous studies, and theories of policing and the state. She also organizes with The Red Nation, a grassroots Native-run organization committed to the liberation of Indigenous people from colonialism and capitalism.

Melanie Yazzie is a political organizer, a vocally anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist thinker, and an Indigenous revolutionary. She currently works as an assistant professor in the Departments of Native American Studies and American Studies at the University of New Mexico (https://nas.unm.edu/people/faculty/me...) and also organizes with The Red Nation, an indigenous-led leftist organization committed to immediate and material decolonization (https://therednation.org/). She is the lead editor of Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society and has co-written two incredibly important books, The Red Deal: Indigenous Action to Save Our Earth and Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation. We talk about those texts here, and about some of Dr. Yazzie's forthcoming book projects. Yazzie's work decrypts and diagnoses the individualism that characterizes liberal politics. And she is, as she explains here, understandably frustrated about the lack of progress that has been made on dealing with the liberal takeover of radical politics, in part via the reassuring language of “reconciliation.” In relation to this problem, Yazzie talks about the palpable “confusion” and “alienation” that exists among white settlers who participate in solidarity protests alongside Indigenous peoples. What she says we tend to overlook, though, is that this alienation is a defining feature of capitalism, and that the desire to be close to and internalize the type of connection and feeling of interdependency that Indigenous peoples feel toward the land, even it comes from a sincere place, is a deeply messy, difficult and unsettling tendency. The rise in “settler extremism” is, in her words, a “direct response to the existential threat that” even a change in the “symbolic order” represents. And so, for this reason, she reflects on how, as an educator, she has seen a “full scale assault on education” and why it might make sense that "the realm of ideas and the realm of intellectual production is” a “battleground… right now politically.”

He attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2008. Aaron is a Sequoyah Fellow and professional member of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). Allergy season comes for Shadiin, Delma's struggles with motivating his kids through the end of the school year, and they both still manage to have a good week as they dive in with guest, internationally recognized Janene Yazzie, a Diné community activist who is co-founder and CEO of Sixth World Solutions, which works with Diné communities to develop projects, programs and policies that promote sustainability, environmental justice, and self governance. She's also serving as a co-convener of the indigenous peoples major group of the United Nations. Janene shares the experience of being Indigenous and navigating indoctrination in the U.S. education system, plus her thoughts on Black and Indigenous solidarity.
