Yasmine Arrington Brooks was a teenager when she became the potential answer to a challenge. The child of incarcerated parents with a passion for making things happen, she founded ScholarCHIPS and hasn't looked back since. ScholarCHIPS provides college scholarships, mentoring, mental health supports, and a peer support network to college-bound young adults who have incarcerated parents, inspiring them to complete their college education. I've been a Yazzie fan for a long time and I wondered: what would she say about how curiosity contributes to the work of social entrepreneurship? In this podcast I am proud to have my prep school roommate joining us. Colonel Lawrence Yazzie and I met on the first day of basic training at the United States Air Force Academy Prep School back in July of 1995. We stayed up too long that first night w/ me asking Yaz about growing up on a reservation. He was just as enthralled w/ me being a Catholic from Kentucky. We have been tight friends ever since. Yaz (as he is called by his friends) was one of the first native americans to play Division 1 basketball. In our conversation he tells us how he got good at basketball while growing up in the Arizonan desert. He talks about why he chose Air Force and the challenges of playing there. Yaz was a 3 point sniper and he talks about coming off the bench cold at the end of games to try and bring his team back. We also touch on him playing with his brother in college and the time he infamously made Sportscenter. Yaz works in cybersecurity at a national level and gives tips to all the listeners on how to practice online hygiene. Connect with Cory: Website | https://www.prepathletics.com Twitter | https://twitter.com/PREP_Athletics Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/prep.athletics/Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/PrepAthletics Email | coryheitz@gmail.com Phone | 859-317-1166 Subscribe to the PREP Athletics Podcast: iTunes | https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/prep-athletics-podcast/id1546265809?uo=4 Spotify | https://open.spotify.com/show/6CAKbXFiIOhoHinzsReYbJ Amazon | https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/3c37179d-3371-47f9-9d97-fd569e8802a7/prep-athletics-basketball-podcast #AmazonMusic Google Podcasts | https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy80M2YwZTZkMC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw About Me Cory Heitz is the Founder and President of PREP Athletics. Senior Producer Lou DiVizio opens the show with some headlines from around the state, including news that Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has quietly shuttered the state's Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives Task Force, as reported by Bella Davis at New Mexico In Depth. Then, we turn our attention to three education issues we've been following closely in recent weeks and months, beginning with the state's response to the court ruling in the seminal Yazzie-Martinez case. Senior Producer Lou DiVizio speaks with Public Education Secretary Dr. Arsenio Romero about the state's position on Attorney General Raúl Torrez's desire to take over litigation in the case and what progress his department has made to create a more equitable learning environment for all students in our state.     Chronic absenteeism has long been present in New Mexico's rollcall of school problems. The rate ticked down in the most recently completed school year, but it's more than doubled since 2019. KUNM's Megan Kamerick hosts a special roundtable to talk about what the state is doing to get more students to show up to school and whether it's effective.     COVID, remote learning, returning to school and concerns about safety are all major challenges that have snowballed for students in recent years. Executive Producer Jeff Proctor speaks with two school counselors about the unique hurdles students are confronting and how they've impacted their mental health and coursework.   Host: Lou DiVizio    Segments:   PED Cabinet Secretary on the State's Response to Yazzie-Martinez Ruling Correspondent: Lou DiVizio Guest: Dr. Arsenio Romero, cabinet secretary, NM Public Education Department    Addressing Chronic Absenteeism in NM Schools  Correspondent: Megan Kamerick Guests:  Leslie Kelly, behavioral health coordinator, NM Public Education Department  Teri Wimborne, director of collective impact, United Way of Central New Mexico  Estevan Gallegos, juvenile probation officer supervisor, CYFD    School Counselors Assess the Student Experience in 2023  Correspondent: Jeff Proctor Guests:  Bryan Gabaldon, school counselor, Highland High School  Devon Shelton, school counselor, Alameda Elementary School  For More Information: New Mexico AG says he's going after school discipline and Yazzie-Martinez to protect children – New Mexico In Depth  Millions of kids are missing weeks of school as attendance tanks across the US – The Associated Press  Let's talk about the youth mental health crisis – KUNM   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nmif/message

This week on New Mexico in Focus, Attorney General Raúl Torrez explains two recent decisions involving education in our state. In partnership with New Mexico In Depth, Executive Director Trip Jennings asks Torrez about his intention to take over litigation in the Yazzie-Martinez case. Then, Jennings discusses a recent announcement from the attorney general that his office will investigate reported disproportionately harsh discipline at Gallup-McKinley County Schools. Melanie Yazzie is a political organizer, a vocally anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist thinker, and an Indigenous revolutionary. She currently works as an assistant professor in the Departments of Native American Studies and American Studies at the University of New Mexico (https://nas.unm.edu/people/faculty/me...) and also organizes with The Red Nation, an indigenous-led leftist organization committed to immediate and material decolonization (https://therednation.org/). She is the lead editor of Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society and has co-written two incredibly important books, The Red Deal: Indigenous Action to Save Our Earth and Red Nation Rising: From Bordertown Violence to Native Liberation. We talk about those texts here, and about some of Dr. Yazzie's forthcoming book projects. Yazzie's work decrypts and diagnoses the individualism that characterizes liberal politics. And she is, as she explains here, understandably frustrated about the lack of progress that has been made on dealing with the liberal takeover of radical politics, in part via the reassuring language of “reconciliation.” In relation to this problem, Yazzie talks about the palpable “confusion” and “alienation” that exists among white settlers who participate in solidarity protests alongside Indigenous peoples. What she says we tend to overlook, though, is that this alienation is a defining feature of capitalism, and that the desire to be close to and internalize the type of connection and feeling of interdependency that Indigenous peoples feel toward the land, even it comes from a sincere place, is a deeply messy, difficult and unsettling tendency. The rise in “settler extremism” is, in her words, a “direct response to the existential threat that” even a change in the “symbolic order” represents. And so, for this reason, she reflects on how, as an educator, she has seen a “full scale assault on education” and why it might make sense that "the realm of ideas and the realm of intellectual production is” a “battleground… right now politically.”
