Hello! I'm currently in the middle of producing a new series of The Outdoors Fix podcast. So in the meantime, I've got a special episode for you that I think you'll enjoy! Some of you will remember an episode I recorded with Matthew Bannister back in 2020 - he's the founder of the multi-award winning Folk on Foot podcast where he goes walking with leading folk musicians in beautiful spots that have inspired their music. I really loved chatting with Matthew and hearing all about how and why he started Folk on Foot, and I've devoured each episode over the years. It's an absolutely stunning podcast, and complete escapism, even if you're like me and don't know a huge amount about folk music. So I'm thrilled that he's let me share with you one of my favourite episodes of Folk on Foot which I think you'll love. It's Matthew's walk and conversation with the author Raynor Winn, who's bestselling book, The Salt Path, tells the story of her journey along the 630-mile South West Coast Path with her husband Moth, after they'd become homeless and he'd been diagnosed with a terminal neurodegenerative disease. Raynor has also been collaborating with the Gigspanner Big Band to create a show which marries her words about the South West and traditional music from the area. The Outdoors Fix has always been about sharing conversations and inspiration so we can all fit more of the outdoors into our lives - so I hope you enjoy Matthew's wonderful chat and walk with Raynor and you take away something from it too. There are dozens of other episodes of Folk on Foot available, recorded all over the country, from Shetland to Port Isaac, and with musicians like Eliza Carthy, Johnny Flynn and Karine Polwart. One of my favourite episodes is with Sam Lee where he sings among nightingales in Sussex - I'd definitely recommend listening to that one. Just search for Folk on Foot wherever you get your podcasts, or find them @folkonfoot on social media. If you'd like to listen to my conversation with Matthew on The Outdoors Fix, where he tells me all about his outdoors life and why he set up Folk on Foot, it's the episode from July 2020. And stay tuned for a brand new series of The Outdoors Fix podcast in the next few weeks! Until then, enjoy your adventures outside - we all know it's the best place there is. On this episode of the Richard Crouse Show we get to know, all the way from Cornwall in South West England, Jeremy Brown and Jon Cleave, two of the founding members of the sea shanty singing group Fisherman's Friends. They have incredible story of being discovered by a music producer who visited their small fishing village of Port Isaac, and propelling them to stardom. Their recordings of traditional sea shanties have topped the charts and they've played on the main stage of the Glastonbury Festival in front of 100,000 people and for royalty at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Their story has inspired two films, “Fisherman's Friends” and the sequel, which is in theatres now, “Fisherman's Friends: One and All,” starring James Purefoy and now it's a stage show called “Fisherman's Friends: The Musical which has just touched diown at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto after a successful run in the UK. Then, Enrico Colantoni stops by. You know the talented actor from portraying Elliot DiMauro in the sitcom “Just Shoot Me!,” Keith Mars on the television series “Veronica Mars.” On the big screen he has appeared in the films “Galaxy Quest,” “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” “Contagion,” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Today we talk about his latest film, a comedy about four stoners, the self-proclaimed "Vandits", have a bright idea to knock over a senior citizens bingo hall on Christmas Eve. In this segment we talk about the unusual way he paid for theatre school in New York City and how the cast and crew of “Vandits” persevered after all their equipment was stolen the night before they were to start shooting. Finally, we'll meet Elegance Bratton, the film director who turned his story of being a young gay man, who found unexpected strength, camaraderie and support when he joined the Marines, after being rejected by his mother, into a critically acclaimed film called “The Inspection.” It is a classic against-all-odds story that paints a vivid picture of life inside the boot camp, the dehumanization, the violence, but also the brotherhood. The movie carefully builds the world of the boot camp, creating a palette of claustrophobia, brutality and tension that adds layers to the telling of his survival story.

There are shows that teleport one to where they are set in, to such an immersive degree that one becomes familiar with the characteristic life of that place.  And today's Lost and Found ushers us to the idyllic, sleepy Cornish fishing village of Port Isaac in Northern Cornwall which is depicted as Portwenn (pronounced ‘Port when') on screen. Yes, you guessed it right, we're talking about Doc Martin. The show's about the eponymous grumpy and uptight doctor who finds himself in a pickle when he decides to move to rural Cornwall to set up practice. Headlined by Martin Clunes, the show works for its disarmingly matter-of-fact style of comedy which is rarely seen on TV anymore. The 2004 show hardly made a splash on TV and some even found it to be rather uneventful. One may agree that there's very little that happens in Portwenn and what does transpire may seem too trivial to make the audience sit up and take notice. But it's the bumbling exchanges between the idiosyncratic characters that make up for the show's sluggish pace. The muted humour largely centres around Doc Martin's inability to keep up with Portwenn's locals – a gossipy bunch with little refrain who can't be bothered to maintain the British reserve. Needless to say, each episode follows the hapless doctor as he goes beyond his call of duty to assist a Portwenn local negotiate a peculiar challenge. So, if you're in the mood for a show that helps you unwind and furnishes a comforting mood with some light comedy tossed in, add Doc Martin to your watchlist right away. Doc Martin can be streamed on Netflix.Well, that's the Lost and Found  for today's podcast, I shall be back again soon with a new episode. Until then it's your host Nikhil signing out.

Many of your will know today's guest Nathan Outlaw from his various TV appearances, Michelin stars, all round love of hospitality and the author of 5 well regarded books.  Chatting to Nathan you can see why he's such a popular hospitality human.  Relaxed, positive, knowledgeable, with no pretentiousness and happy to chat about the challenges, lows and highs of his hospitality adventure. Nathan was generous with his time in this conversation, where we touch on just how tough an impact the pandemic had with Nathan having to close his restaurants in London, but how it created a positive opportunity for him to revaluate his business and his lifestyle.  Nathan is now super excited to be 100% focused on his two restaurants in Port Isaac in Cornwall.   And as you'll hear during this chat Nathan has really worked hard to simplify the business and revaluate  the importance of looking after the customer and keeping his chefs creative, with sustainability high on the agenda, rather than worrying about Michelin stars.  With decades of experience behind him and a far greater understanding of the business element of restaurants compared to his early years, Nathan now gets to create a set menu at a set price for a set number of covers booked out 90 days in advance.  It's a genius model that really gives him and his team the freedom to enjoy simply creating incredible seasonal dishes that vary depending on what has been caught or farmed locally.  A real tale of learning, closing restaurants, opening restaurants and all the time loving the produce and the team around him, I really hope you enjoy this weeks conversation. Check out his business here, find him on instagram, or the business on twitter.

Julia Raeside reviews.25 years ago the Fisherman's Friends were just a crew of friends in Port Isaac, Cornwall. Some of them were fishermen. They sang sang shanties, nautical and Cornish songs, for fun to locals and holidaymakers.
