This can lead to significant healing and resolving old issues. Favorable: Handling social and environmental issues Facing and overcoming personal challenges Deepening spiritual practice and purification Nurturing community and social connections Developing patience and self-discipline Unfavorable: Tendency towards detachment and isolation Fear of change and resistance to growth Overwhelm and stress from social responsibilities Shakti: The power of healing, which can manifest as both physical and emotional healing, as well as the healing of social and environmental issues. This is a time to focus on personal growth and transformation, as well as taking steps towards making a positive impact in your community and the world. This week only: schedule a reading at http://www.quietmindastrology.com/reading and get over $2000 in additional value. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend! Even if you don't celebrate, it's a great time to practice gratitude. This time of year, many people turn to astrology to understand the patterns of the past year and plan for the year ahead. Many people book readings this time of year anyway, but with all of the astrological energy of devotion and gratitude happening right now, I wanted to make something extra special for you. A way of saying thank you for being a supporter of Quietmind Astrology. It's a massive gift to get to do what I love, and I want to support you in doing what you love and living in your purpose. This week only, when you book a reading you get over $2000 in added value. You've likely heard the advice to "follow your dharma" or "do what you love" countless times now, but it's not just a platitude. It comes from the same origins of Vedic Astrology, around 500 BCE in the most revered spiritual text in India, The Bhagavad Gita. Modern science validates this and shows that following your dharma also one of the most positive things you can do for your health. A study of 8,419 people found that living in alignment with your purpose can lower your risk of heart disease by 3x and increase your lifespan by 2.4x! Yet, life purpose can seem like one of the least important things to focus on right now. We're living through changing times. Many are worried about the economy or other external forces outside of our control. We're in similar transits to the American Revolution. It can seem overwhelming. On top of that, the average person gets 80 distracting notifications a day. That might not seem like a big deal, but every time you check your phone it takes up to 24 minutes to get focused again. So it makes sense that 80% of people feel like they're just reacting to life and NOT living in alignment with their purpose. Part of my dharma is to help you live in alignment with your purpose. After thousands of case studies, I've made it easier than ever for you to do that. For this week only I'm offering my most comprehensive, in depth reading yet; the Life Alignment Reading. It includes three sections to Reconnect to Your True Self Deepen Your Relationships Clarify Your Karma (Past, Present & Future)

What is your intuition telling you lately? This Wednesday Mercury, the planet of communications and intelligence enters the sign of Pisces. Pisces represents dreams, intuition and imagination. This placement is considered ‘debilitated’ so your thinking might not be as sharp and logical as usual over the next two weeks but that’s okay because this transit has many great positives. Now is the time to listen to the calm, quiet voice of your intuition. Now is the time to listen to the subconscious messages of your dreams. Now is the time to cast your vision and imagination for your future. This cycles comes every year between February and April to finalize our lessons of the season and year behind us as we enter a new season and new solar year in April. I’ll share the powerful “dream alchemy” and intention setting practices I’ve used as a Mercury in Pisces native to make the most of these energies. Debilitation sounds like a bad thing but most people have debilitations in their charts and they happen in transits all the time. Albert Einstein had a ‘debilitated mercury’ in his birth chart and he turned out all right! So there is hope for the rest of us

Today I share a simple 20 minute meditation on the most important part of yoga practice: yogic breathing. This is great for beginners or anyone who wants to deepen the fundamentals of their practice. Yogic breathing may seem really simple - and it is - but It can have profound benefits. The average person breathes 12-20 breaths a minute. These are often shallow and emphasize the upper lungs. Breathing that way creates a Sympathetic Nervous System response - a stress response. Just by how you breathe! With yogic breathing we slow this down and breathe deeper into the lower belly using the diaphragm. As a former singer I learned this is where the power to sustain your breath comes from. This slower, deeper belly breathing also creates a Parasympathetic Nervous System response - a rest and relax response - which was very helpful to come back to throughout the week Ive had with power outages, water being shut off and food shortages here in Texas. I share more about that here and on the Quietmind Astrology podcast (link below). Enjoy this podcast? Leave a review in Apple Podcasts or send me a message on Instagram. In last week’s episode I shared how to approach your practice as a place of refuge. Today I share how to move from that refuge into the year ahead. To hear the still, quiet voice of intuition that always knows your next right step. Modern technology is part of "the distraction economy." It aims to keep us scrolling through social media - looking outside ourselves. Yoga does the opposite. It's about your most valuable asset - your attention - and choosing how to direct it. When you become curious about where your attention goes, insights can arise. New neural pathways can form. Opportunities become clear. This is fertile soil to plant seeds of intention for the new year. Building on everything I've shared about polarities this season, consider this. When you have an intention and imagine moving in that direction, what do you feel? Do you feel contraction or expansion? Do you feel growth or stagnation? If there is expansion - is there a next step that you feel called towards? If you feel contraction - does this feel out of alignment? Or is there a limiting belief at play? The new year offers a fresh start. A reminder of impermanence - another year has passed. A decade, in this case. Who have you become? Who are you becoming? Who will you be a year from now, reflecting back on this? These are questions to live, rather than question to answer. To pause when you notice the spiritual lens flares of synchronicity. To meet both contraction and expansion with curiosity. Also with the wisdom of perspective. To be bold and take chances when the insight is vivid and the inner voice is clear. To be like a tree that stops branching out when the inner voice says "no." If you feel inspired you might write out your goals - you might make a plan - you might throw it out. Whatever you choose to do, trust that it is the right thing to do. It today's practice I will share ways to notice where you direct your attention. To encourage you to find your own definition of alignment. To let inspiration move you. To trust your intuition when it says to be still. ----------------------------------------------------------- Want to put this into practice on retreat? Last week I shared ways to embody yin qualities in the often more yang practice of Hatha yoga. Today I explore the question of "how can you feel supported and able to relax while being strong and active?" Progressing now into a slow flow Vinyasa practice. There is a Buddhist concept of "taking refuge." This means finding things that are reliable sources of support, perspective and refuge. Yoga practice can be that. Buddhism teaches 3 refuges: dhamma (the path), buddha (awakening) and sangha (peer support). I take this to mean that when I am looking for perspective, insight or meaning it’s helpful to look within. To cultivate self awareness (the refuge of the buddha within). To continue on my path (dharma) and do the practices and work that I know are important to me. To receive support and guidance from others on a similar path (sangha). My intention as a teacher is to offer support and guidance like so many generous teachers have before me. To offer a yoga practices that are a reliable source of refuge from the ups and downs of every day life. To help make sense of it all and give perspective. Often taking refuge seems to mean slowing down. But what about those times when we have too much energy for that? Can taking refuge be an active and engaged practice? What would a yoga practice look like that embraced that paradox? I'll share my take in today's practice and, as always, I encourage you to find your own definition. The practices of this season (7) have explored polarities and paradoxes. I've shared ways to assess imbalances and return to your center. As this year comes to a close, I encourage you to find time take refuge in your practice. To assess what still may be a bit out of balance - rather than aiming to 'fix' it, being curious. Letting your practice be a place without judgment, shame or expectations. Letting your practice be a place to take refuge now and throughout the year ahead. Having found that place of inner refuge, next week I will share a practice to bring closure to the year. Props: 2 Blocks, Blanket Tags: Crow, Headstand, Locust, Core Strengthening) ----------------------------------------------------------- One way to practice all 3 refuges is on retreat. Last week I shared how deep rest is as important as focused work. I shared ways to find both in your practice and your daily schedule. In today's episode I share ways to embody the yin aspects of practice. Sukha. Ease. Softness. Change. Receptivity. These are in contrast to the strong ujayi breath and bandhas of 2 weeks ago. My intention is to help us move towards the end of 2019 open and receptive to new possibilities. As always we are exploring opposites in our practice. The terms I have come back to the most over the years are yin & yang, stirha & sukha, and masculine & feminine. It's important to note that I don't mean man and woman - but I'm pointing to qualities within everyone. In general, western culture rewards and reinforces the masculine / yang / stirha qualities. This can lead to difficulty in knowing how to navigate the sukha qualities in our practice and in our lives. As I shared last week, this was a major challenge for my friend and for me. It's easy to get caught in the cycle of always trying to DO more. To become uncomfortable with uncertainty, change, the unknown, and making time to BE. Yoga turns that upside down by being goalless, non-competitive and always evolving. Though, it is so malleable that it can become exactly the opposite. As always, the art is in making space for both. Can your yoga practice be both structured and spontaneous? What would that look like? Could there be room for discovery and curiosity, while also being precise and firm? Is it even correct to say that effort & ease, yin & yang, masculine & feminine are opposites? Or are they two parts of the same thing? Life is full of contradictions and paradoxes, and yoga is a practice where we get to embody and explore them. The word Hatha itself means "force" - so to embody softness in a Hatha practice itself is a paradox. How does it - how could it - make sense? My intention in today's practice is that you begin to explore these paradoxes. In your practice and throughout your week. Are you being too yielding where more effort is appropriate? Are you to forceful when slowing down would be the way to speed things up? In next week’s episode I will how to build on this approach - to have our yoga practice be the support we often need. A few years ago I went to a Vipassana meditation retreat. There was minimal food. No talking. No yoga. Only Vipassana (“insight meditation”) - 10 hours a day for 10 days. I have always loved seated meditation. It was my first mindfulness practice and it has been the one I come back to the most. It helps me center, gain perspective, clear my mind and refocus. This retreat heightened and solidified these aspects of my practice. It also challenged me. It brought awareness to unconscious aspects of my mind and body. Why did my attention drift so often at specific points in the practice - like the body scan of my stomach? This happened the first 5 days in a row. What was I unwilling to address? Could I make space for that? Also... With nothing else to distract me, why was I now thinking so much about meal times? By the middle of the week I had two realizations... One: If I meditated near the door I could get to dinner early and get one of the rare dinner mints before they ran out. Two: as much as I love seated meditation, I realized yoga is my primary meditation practice. I needed to move my body. (Too many dinner mints?) Fortunate for me, I had a private room at this retreat and I could 'sneak in some yoga' between meditations. After doing this Day 6 was my most engaged, embodied and mindful day of practice yet. The rest of the week flew by. Since then I have viewed my practice as a 'moving meditation.' An opportunity to practice all the things I practice in seated meditation. To find stillness within movement. To land in each posture as it's own seat ('asana') for meditation. This was what drew me to the practice to begin with, and what I reconnected with on my retreat. Today in your practice I'll offer ways to find your own version of this experience. In the breath. In the subtle energetic anatomy (bandhas). As well as in many familiar postures. Quietmind Yoga: Full Length Yoga Classes with Jeremy Devens - Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Gentle

In last week’s episode I shared one of my favorite threads of the Yoga Sutra: “mindfulness of opposites.” Today I share one of the most essential pairs of opposites -- anterior and posterior pelvic tilt. If you’ve never heard these words before, I will share exactly what I mean by them in today’s episode. As I’ve shared before, low back pain effects 80% of people, has many common causes, and many ways to address the issue. In general, I aim to find the root of the issue. This may involve strengthening the back as we did in Episode #95. This may involve strengthening the core, as we did in Episode #97. Or it may involve adjusting the tilt of the pelvis as we’ll do in today’s practice. If you’re like me it’s so easy for you to slip into a posterior pelvic tilt when sitting in a chair. Rounded back. Shoulders slumped. Or, if you’re like one of my early teachers you have a ‘swayback’ or an anterior pelvic tilt. Arched back. Bowed spine. At either extreme you are likely to run into issues. As Ayurveda teaches: anything in can be a medicine or a poison, depending on how you use it. My intention today is to help you have more awareness of the tilt of your pelvis and how it effects the rest of your body. This is one of the roots I find in many people struggling with low back pain. The good news is it's one of the simples issues to address. As you move through your practice today, notice the tilt of your pelvis. Notice how this effects the rest of the posture. Notice how it effects your posture throughout the day, after practice. In today's episode I share one of my favorite threads of the Yoga Sutra. Pratipaksha Bhavana: “When negativity arises, cultivate the opposite” or “mindfulness of opposites.” Opposites are the core of everything I teach in yoga. Postures are either active or passive. Moving or still. Strengthening or stretching. Sometimes many of these things at once. Is your low back in pain? Look to the opposite side of the body. A good place to start is the transverse abdominals - the deep core muscles that support the torso are often weak. An issue I didn’t realize I had until years into my practice. Now I know when I’m tense in an area of my body it’s likely due to some sort of imbalance. The imbalance is always unique to the situation and individual - but it’s a good place to start. Resolving the imbalance requires some experimentation. To explore the polarities of strength & flexibility, movement & stillness, active & passive. In short: stihra & sukha. This applies to the mind and emotions too. In my early 20s I struggled with depression. It wasn't until I found out about gratitude journaling that things started to shift. Instead of focusing on what wasn't working, I began to seek out what was working. I tended to be more cynical and judgmental back then. This new practice got me to cultivate the opposite polarity. It wasn't fake or forced either. Each day I found 3 things I felt genuine gratitude for. Soon it got me excited for each day. This lead to me trying things outside of my comfort zone, including my first yoga class. I didn't know about pratipaksha bahavana - or any of these concepts - but it is what got me out of my depression. I can look back now and see I had cultivated a state. Every time I complained, judged, compared and wished I was something I wasn’t. I was cultivating a more depressed state of mind. A more cynical state. The gratitude practice helped me cultivate the opposite. It was slow. It was small. It didn’t happen in a week, or a month. But over a decade later I am a much different person. I still have cynical and depressed thoughts at times. The difference is now I know I have a choice. I can choose to cultivate that state, or I can choose its opposite. My intention is that this practice reminds you that you always have a choice in your thoughts as well. We all have our lows and our negative thoughts at times, that's okay. If you start to feel stuck, though, this yoga sutra "pratipaksha bhavana" can be a reminder of how to get unstuck. ----------------------------------------------------------- Early Registration closes in 2 WEEKS for Mindful New Year - an online & in person retreat - Jan 17th - Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology - Learn more at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com Support Quietmind Yoga - The only weekly yoga practice podcast - and one of the only approaches to yoga that addresses often overlooked issues in yoga practice such as hamstring strengthening, integrating yoga history and philosophy, and maintaining a diverse and evolving practice. In today's episode I share about low back pain. EIGHTY percent of people in studies have reported experiencing low back pain. This is a massive issue effecting millions of people. There are many effective ways to address this. The first question is, what is low back pain? Often, knowing the issue is half way to solving the issue. The majority of the students I’ve worked with have reported low back pain at one time or another. Often it’s caused by some sort of repetitive stress like working at a desk, driving or being on a device. This gets worsened by slumping on a couch after work then curling up in a fetal position to go to sleep. The issue is keeping the spine in some sort of flexion all day. This results in what you sometimes see in elderly bodies; the dreaded hunchback. There are, of course, many other forms of back pain with endless causes. Today I will address some common causes of repetitive stress from postural patterns. I also address this from an energetic perspective. There is a concept in the Yoga Sutra called "pratipakshi bhavana". This means when something is out of balance, cultivate the opposite. This may have evolved from Ayurveda's “like increases like and opposites bring balance.” So a good place to start with back pain is: do the opposite of the movements causing the issue. This starts with noticing the tilt of the pelvis. Next, noticing flexion and extension in the spine. Next, noticing weaknesses and compensations in the core. There are many possible causes of back. This is what can make it difficult to relieve. But, in general, I teach to address the whole lumbo-pelvic hip complex. This is pretty much all the joints, muscles and connective tissue from the knees to the belly button. Today we'll focus on strengthening the core to support the low back. Again, it’s important to define terms. When I say ‘core’ I don’t mean doing a bunch of sit-ups while I yell at you over blaring pop music. You could actually do that and never use your deep core muscles - and create MORE imbalances. Look at any advanced yogi with a strong core and they rarely have a defined 6 pack. This is because the true core is not the 6 pack muscles. Those are more superficial and called the rectus abdomens. Deeper than that is are muscles more important to supporting the back. Muscles more helpful in spinal stabilization and preventing back pain. Muscles that help with pretty much every active yoga posture. The transverse abdominis. The internal obliques. The psoas. The multifidi. If we want a strong core these are the muscles to strengthen. If we want to support the back, reverse and prevent back pain, these are the muscles to strengthen. In next week’s episode I will share more about the Yoga Sutra I mentioned. I'll share the concept of “pratipaksha bhavana" in a gentle yoga practice. Want to help this podcast grow? Email me at jeremydevens@gmail.com - In last week’s episode I shared how to address deep seated muscular imbalances. In today's episode I share how balance is often misunderstood as needing to arrive at a perfect point between two opposites. As you know from any amount of life experience, things are constantly changing and moving. A core teaching of spiritual traditions is impermanence - you can never swim in the same river twice - you can never be in the same yoga pose twice - who you are now is vastly different than you were 10 years ago, or even just a year ago. What we can find, however, is a sense of center between opposites. Imperfect. Changing. But somewhere towards the center. A place within that is not so effected by swaying left or right, not so easily taken off balance. Without a sense of an internal center everything from the weather to a challenging conversation to bad traffic can control your emotions, your thoughts and your behaviors - like a puppeteer controls a marionette. The lesson of balance, however, is not about defiance, ego or putting up walls by becoming a control freak. This only creates more rigidity. Too much stirha, not enough sukha. Too much effort, not met with ease. We can play at the extremes. We can fall apart, be lazy, make mistakes and break all of our own rules. We can fortify those rules, follow them fervently and do nothing out of order. Ultimately this dance of yin and yang will repeat a million times in a million ways. Moving between these extremes. In yoga philosophy we learn of purusha and prakriti. Spirit and matter. We become aware of this dance energetically in how we interact with ourselves, our practice, each other. We become aware of this dance physically in how we activate and deactivate, strengthen and stretch into progressively advanced postures. Ultimately we become aware that we are neither just yin or yang, but the observer who decides when where and how to apply each, as needed. Sometimes the balance is tipped way off center. Sometimes, though, that’s the most effective way to return to center. In next week’s episode I will put together the strengthening of last week and the centering of this week: specifically - strengthening the core to resolve low back pain. It’s hard to have a center when your back is in pain. Low back pain effects EIGHTY percent of people, and core strengthening is often a dreadful proposition. I’ll share ways I’ve found to work with the core that address the root of the issue, and are actually pretty fun to do (relatively…) - Join the Quietmind Community: The best way to keep in touch is to join the Quietmind Community at http://www.quietmind.yoga - sign up for any of my free downloads to join. Registration is now OPEN for Mindful New Year - an online & in person retreat - Jan 17th - Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology - Learn more at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com In today's episode I discuss ways to release tension in the back and strengthen the back. This is a commonly UNDER trained area for many yoga students, and a commonly under emphasized aspect of yoga practice. Yoga tends to OVER emphasize pushing movements like Chaturanga and updog - which are awesome and important postures - AND it's equally important to balance them out with pulling actions like we'll do in today's class. How did I come to this conclusion? I decided to challenge myself one summer and did vinyasa yoga classes every day for 90 days. A few weeks in I couldn't ignore that my body was not happy with this challenge. This was not a "no pain no gain" situation - this was a "yoga is about developing a relationship with and listening to your body, so hey dude, listen to your body" situation.  I went to a bodyworker I trust who is also a teacher - she assessed my shoulder and asked if I'd been doing a lot of vinyasa recently. This was not the first time she'd seen this. The issue: weak rhomboids, weak lower traps and overactive shoulders and traps. Common yoga thought would be "well, it's tight, so stretch it out to un-tighten it." this is well intentioned, and seems logical, but it's not actual how muscle works, and often makes things worse. The solution was to increase neuromuscular activation. in other words - MORE contraction, not less. More STRENGTHENING - LESS stretching. The strengthening trains deep mind-muscle connection that allows muscles to more fully lengthen because they can more fully contract, and they are less likely to hold tension. Unfortunately, 9 out of 10 vinyasa yoga teachers are not trained to address this - and my well intended 'challenge' to evolved from the simple task of  "attend 90 classes" to address deep seated muscular imbalances that 9 out 10 public yoga classes will not address - and likely aggravate. The solution I found was a new approach to practice that you've likely heard pieces of throughout previous classes on this podcast, but it is a central focus of today's practice. As always: this is a general class and not a 1-1 session, so interpret what I offer in your own unique way - just as I do anytime I entrust a teacher to lead me.  Support Quietmind Yoga:  This is the only weekly yoga practice podcast - with new hour long classes every week - addressing often overlooked issues in yoga practice such as hamstring strengthening, integrating yoga history and philosophy, and maintaining a diverse and evolving practice. Or have you ever felt quick to anger, frustration, irritability or annoyance? These are signs of excess heat in the body - what is known in Ayurveda as Pitta Dosha. Today begins Season 7 of the Quietmind Yoga Podcast and we will address the transition from the summer season into the fall by reducing excess heat in the body. Ayurveda teaches that "all diseases start in the transition of the seasons" - so this week is an important time to stay hydrated, well rested and do your practices that help you feel your best. Pitta accumulates in the summer, but it can become excessive any time of year, and this is a practice you can come back to any time you need to regulate the Pitta Dosha in your body.
