Norm opens the show with an important correction regarding the state's authority to involuntarily commit an individual and how long that temporary commitment may last. Thank you to WICC's own Lisa Wexler for listening and providing our listeners with the right information. Norm begins the show in earnest by discussing the Randy Cox case, which is making headlines for the questionable handling of an inmate transfer resulting in the apparent paralysis. How are officers trained? What tools are available to them? And what do officers experience on a day to day basis in their encounters with the individual that lead to an observed calousness from the vantage of a detached media and public? Norm takes a balanced approach in analyzing the Randy Cox case. While the officers might have been correct to be suspicious of Cox's words of apparent injury, Norm explains why they're conduct appears to have been way over the line. But the bigger issue is what Norm has called race entrepreneurship. As applied here, Norm questions what business Ben Crump has with the Randy Cox case beyond the new requirement that prisoner transport vehicles be equipped with seatbelts. In other words, what about the Randy Cox case warrants the lens of racial discrimination? The concern here is one anchored in the most fundamental component of legitimacy. Like, share, and subscribe! Norm opens the show discussing the function of the Supreme Court of the United States—to say what the law is—by examining the history of the Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren, who served on the Court from 1953 to 1969. The Constitution certainly is not written in granite, but certainly the outrage we are seeing—"the crisis in the air"—illustrates the true cultural polarity in the modern American scene. Norm also discusses the next major inflection point in American politics: the administrative state. That is, the Court's opinion in the EPA case reflects what many Americans have been saying for the last several years; that we are not a nation governed by experts. Why, then, is the Court's direction to Congress to step in and provide guidance to the EPA so important right now? Norm then points out to the listener a fascinating book written in 1971, "Critical Elections and the Mainsprings of American Politics" by Walter Dean Burnham. Burnham asked what it was that defines how our political parties attach themselves to our cultural issues. Norm has had an ambivalent relationship with the Federalist Society for as long as it has existed. Why? And what is the future of the Federalist Society? In the second hour, Norm focuses on the Randy Cox case making headlines. He is then joined by LAL regular, Kevin Alan, who is running for Lt. Governor of Connecticut on the Libertarian ticket. And Norm is also joined by the Libertarian candidate for Governor, Aaron Lewis. Why would a Connecticut resident give a Libertarian candidate his or her vote? Like, share, and subscribe! Voices In My Head Podcast #230: Andrew Greer, Randy Cox, David Mullins - Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth Recorded live at Parnassus Bookstore in Nashville Tennessee for the release of the new book about Rich Mullins, "Winds of Heathen, Stuff of Earth".
What do you give someone who’s placed songs that have sold on over 80 million records worldwide, including Barbara Streisand, Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Rich Mullins, and countless others? You give him a lot of respect. Randy Cox was one of the first major Christian music publishers swept up in what was to become Contemporary Christian Music. Working alongside industry greats such as Bill Gaither, Bob McKenzie, Joe Huffman, Donna Hilley, and many other behind-the-scenes executives who helped shape what we now know as CCM and even modern worship, Randy Cox has made an indelible mark on Christian music. Listening to Randy talk about hearing “Father’s Eyes” (Chapman) for the first time, realizing how special it was, and pitching it to Brown Bannister for then unknown Amy Grant is remarkable, as well as signing a young upstart named Michael W. Smith. Co-author of a new book called “Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth: Spiritual Conversations Inspired by the Life and Lyrics of Rich Mullins,” Randy reminisces about working with Rich and the power of his musical ideas, motifs, and personal quirkiness. Randy believes Mullins is the greatest poet of our time and represents eleven unknown Mullins’ songs presently unrecorded. Randy Cox is one of the most remarkable music publishers in the history of Christian music and his legacy continues to grow as he mentors and coaches songwriters through his own company. He offers valuable songwriting insights that every serious songwriter can utilize in their songwriting immediately to move beyond “surface” writing to more thoughtful songs that effect deep change in the hearts of listeners. You can connect with Randy on Facebook, or drop him an email at Randy.SongConsultant@gmail.com.
