On our latest weekly roundup, what happened in Vegas didn't stay there, as Catherine reported on her recent trip. Mentioned: Omega Mart. What we're watching: We continued with season 2 of Reservation Dogs with episodes 5 and 6: "Wide Net" and "Decolonativization." We learned a little more about the aunties as they headed to an out-of-town conference, and an earnest pair of workshop presenters tried to help the teens learn more about themselves (without much success).Catherine's library find this week, Slug in Love by Rachel Bright with illustrations by Nadia Shireen, prompted mention of other slug and pug books (Slug Needs a Hug, Doug the Pug, Pig the Pug) as well as reminiscences about some other faves, like Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo, both written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed neverending household tasks (March 10, 2021); launching a young adult (March 7, 2019); and Girl Scout cookies (March 8, 2018). A correction: Last week, Catherine said she had learned of a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert scheduled for the afternoon. Turns out, the band in question was the Red Hot Chilli PIPERS, which makes a lot more sense (and frankly sounds a lot more fun).Next week, we'll watch the next two episodes of Reservation Dogs, season 2: E7 “Stay Gold Cheesy Boy" (which has been inducted into the Extra Hot Great Canon) and E8 “This Is Where the Plot Thickens.” Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Forman answers your COVID-19 concert questions Live Nation's apparent memo "leak" about 2021 conditions for artists appearing at its festivals has sparked a lot of controversy throughout the industry. The memo mostly puts the burden on the artists themselves and not the promoter when it comes to cancelations from either side. Live Nation is also demanding artists take a 20% pay cut with their advance payment and charging the artist double should they cancel a performance. This seems unfair, right? Jack Forman, who serves as the President of BiCoastal Productions, a New York City-based concerts and theatrical booking agency, chats with us about these terms and gets more in depth on how the concert industry operates. With the current COVID-19 epidemic going on worldwide, it's affecting the music business on many levels, including the acts that Jack's agency is representing. We discuss what agents are having to do in order to keep tours alive, along with what are the new dates they're all looking at with regards to getting the bands back on the road. We also discuss what the future of the live music industry is going to be (with an estimated $12.2 billion in revenue in 2019). Are non-linear streaming platforms going to be the new way to be entertained? Are millennials becoming the "Netflix & Chill" society? Are shows going to become an interactive experience? What is the future of the booking agent? And ultimately is the Force Majeure clause in contracts going to be something all promoters and buyers look at with a whole new understanding. BiCoastal Productions roster includes Lee Rocker (of Stray Cats fame), Naturally 7, Colin Mochrie's HYPROV (of Whose Line is it Anyway?), The Hit Men (Legendary Rock Supergroup), Scotland's Red Hot Chilli Pipers and The Daily Show Writers Comedy Tour. Originally spearheading the agency's coverage of the Western United States, Jack now oversees the core agency staff and global touring strategy. He remains actively involved with industry organizations like the Western Arts Alliance (WAA), North American Performing Arts Managers and Artists (NAPAMA), and the Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP). Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin (an avid Packers fan) Jack attended Chicago's Columbia College with a focus in Arts, Entertainment & Media Management while also working at The Windish Agency (now Paradigm) with Indie & Electronic music agents. After college, Jack was recruited to ICM Partners' New York City branch in the Urban Concerts department and he would later join BiCoastal Productions, adding to the growing team led by Ron Gartner & Fran Heller. Jack currently lives in Long Branch, NJ with his wife, Shelly, and their baby girl, Jeanette. www.bicoastalproductions.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2020 Beyond the Music Produced & Hosted by Bob Bender  Creator & Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain): Tom Sabella Audio Engineer (one really cool guy): Jim Tennaboe Director of Video (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Lighting Director (the inventor of video): Mark Pleasant Recorded at: The Coffee House and Underground Bunker in Franklin, TN Mixed & Mastered at: Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Website: businesssideofmusic.com  Stream or Download (free) businesssideofmusic.com  To submit to be interviewed: musicpodcast@mail.com Sponsorship information businesssideofmusic.com/sponsor-affiliate/ Join our mailing list for show announcements, career advice, industry discounts, free gifts and more.  Like Free Special Thanks to Tom Sabella and Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original “Business Side of Music” podcast, and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Discuss on Reddit ➤ Support the Show ➤ Hoots mon! There’s a moose loose aboot this podcast. Time to travel through the mist and into the mythical Scottish town of ‘Brigadoon.’ Expect many references, bad accents and groans from Jimi, as the boys explore Lerner and Loewe’s famous musical. This time around they discuss how accurate a portrayal it actually is, Jimi gives us a brief history of Scotland and Tommy learns all about Buckfast. Braw! Brigadoon (1988 London Cast Recording) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES There’ll be plenty of ‘authentic’ Scottish references in the show notes for you all to sample this week. Let’s start with Ned culture and The Wee Man who enjoys a Buckfast every once in a while. Gene Kelly, eat your heart out. One of the potential origins for the story of Brigadoon is the piece of Celtic classic folklore of Tir Na n’Og which you can read more about here! If you fancy reading more about the history of ‘Brigadoon’ and its impact on Scottish culture you can check out this great book, which also brings ‘Braveheart’ into the mix... Sir Harry Lauder is one of the biggest names in exporting Scottish ‘culture’ to the world. As kitsch as it is, you can’t deny that it had an effect! Here he is singing his most famous song, “Roamin’ in the Gloamin’.” Harry Lauder’s impact can be seen in examples such as this: our favourites Fred and Ginger trying their hand (one more successfully than the other) at Scottish culture. Maybe just stick to what you’re best at guys… A fine example of what Jimi was talking about of these Scottish ditties he learned in school is the Jeely Piece Song. Yes, a song about throwing sandwiches out of a high-rise. Get into it! If you think bagpipes are just a lot of noise, you would be wrong! Here’s Clanadonia giving us something a bit more traditional and for a bit of difference, here’s The Red Hot Chilli Pipers with one of their famous covers. If you fancy celebrating Hogmanay wherever you are and feel the need to first foot, here’s a fine recipe for Black Bun. It’s honestly so delicious! A QUIZ QUESTION FOR DIVAS A laundry list of actresses were considered to play the title role in this musical including: Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Gwen Verdon, Bea Arthur, Doris Day, Elaine Stritch, Lena Horne and Judy Garland. But instead the role went to a relative newcomer on the Broadway scene. What show?

For Easter Sunday, Michael Berkeley's guest is Melanie Reid, who writes a weekly column in The Times about her life as a tetraplegic. Six years ago, on Good Friday 2010, she was out cross-country riding in the Scottish countryside near her home in Stirlingshire. The horse refused a jump and she was thrown off - flipping her body. She broke her neck and back. Since then Melanie Reid has been paralysed from the armpits down. When you're well and young, or young at heart, and busy devouring life, working, playing, laughing, eating, drinking, you assume you're in control. Things change though when the world topples from its axis and your glorious certitude that tomorrow will be as good as today is exposed as pitiful complacency. In Private Passions, Melanie Reid talks about adjusting to life after her accident, 'a painful rebirth'. Although music has been important to her since childhood, after the accident she found that for several years she could not listen to it - the emotional effect was unbearable. Now, though, she finds music inspiring and sustaining. Her choices include Jacqueline du Pré playing Bach's 1st Cello Suite; Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto; Gustav Holst's 'Planets' Suite, Nielsen's Violin Concerto, and Strauss's 'Four Last Songs'. In an inspiring conclusion to the programme, Melanie Reid talks about the happiness she has re-found recently, and the way her life has slowed down so that she can appreciate the beauty of nature, and the changing seasons. And she pays tribute to her loving husband and son, who both play the bagpipes - a cue to play a very untraditional take on the pipes from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Produced by Elizabeth Burke A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 3.
