A few years before his death, I spoke to Sir Jack Brabham. The obvious start was to get him reminiscing about the old days. To my surprise he almost immediately said “you should speak to Ron Tauranac”. Ron had a long friendship with Brabham and Ron helped him no matter which team he was in and then held the official position of the design expert behind the cars that carried the Brabham name. Sir Jack's reference wasn't just a passing comment; a polite thank you, thrown into a speech about himself in the style you often see at the Oscars. It wasn't even a formal recommendation to broaden the research. Sir Jack's eyes lit up with enthusiasm, it seemed clear to me that Brabham felt that any discussion of his career needed to consider his mate and his mate deserved a large amount of credit. Ron Tauranac passed away recently at the age of 95. Someone who is close to motor racing and to the characters behind the events is celebrated motoring journalist Will Hagon. In this interview with Will he covers • How Ron was a partner, an integral part, of Brabham's success • The beginning of Ron's fascination with cars • How he and Jack went in the 1953 Redex trial • How Ron became the biggest builder of racing cars in the world • The role Ron played in the career of Larry Perkins • How Ron helped jack even before he was on his team • Talking with Ron in his later years, attending his 90th birthday and taking a picture of Ron beside a painting of a famous Brabham racing car. Ron Tauranac and Sir Jack Brabham had a friendship, a collaboration, a mateship that stood the test of time including the extremely difficult, complex and political environment of Formula 1 motor racing. Ron was one of the special Australia's who pioneered creative and successful technology but sadly remains less well known that Jack Brabham and many others know that he deserves.

In Episode 8 it's a week of lament. Lamenting some of the fave and best restaurants in the world that are gone through the ravages of time and tide, or are now only tattered remnants of their past. But with all loss comes the Universe balancing it with creation of new things to wonder at google-eyed; the amazeballs new architectural interiors whizzbang DemiGod icon (he's not new...I just recently discovered him) Swedish import MARTIN BRUDNIZKI and his unforgettable creations. From my fave new London restaurant BRASSERIE OF LIGHT (regrettably closed inside regrettably closed SELFRIDGES at the moment until WuFlu blows away) to ANNABELLE's to scores of other groovy hotel installations and objets d'art. There is so much beauty and emotion jam-packed into his creations but they have a transcendental appeal that while radical in some ways the simplicity and blending manages to appeal to a wide audience. You feel an extraordinary vibe when you walk into any place where he has waved his magic wand... Meanwhile...Hey? Do you need a guy? Everyone in a small town or neighbourhood knows a guy. Car problems? I know a guy... and so on... A guy who can (fill in the blank). I name 'dose guys from Sioux City that I used to know. Was University of Colorado (Boulder) in the early 1970's the coolest place ever? Of course... I went there and I was the most uncool chubby thick-glassed, big nose white Jew boy from a hick town ever to attend. But relive those days and a great Facebook site about them which is 'Members Only'. It was Playboy Magazine's then #1 Party School in the USA. 'Nuff said. Two True Hollywood Tales on the brink of being made...or not! Once upon a time a nondescript, insecure, hopelessly-average Jewish lawyer in Melbourne, Australia married into one of the wealthiest families in the country and was handed the keys to the kingdom. He married as well as Nicole Kidman when she snared Tom Cruise in a transactional way. His name was Max Green. On the eve of his son's Bar Mitzvah he stole $40 million dollars from the wealthiest investors in town under pretext of a fake investment tied to a real project, plunged all the money into stolen sapphires from a suspicious mine run by an ex-CIA spook and a partner in Laos, managed and guarded by an ex-SAS soldier and his wife, and almost (read: Almost...) got away with it until he forget that he didn't know what he didn't know and his head was smashed to pieces in a posh hotel room at the Sofitel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia when it was decided he was the man who knew too much. You need to get some quick free legal and accounting advice here because it's stranger than fiction. The other Hollywood film you have never seen and might never unless there's a Dallas Buyers Club miracle is about a guy named Gelignite Jack Murray who drove the longest, toughest, car race on the planet: The legendary REDEX 'round Australia rally in the early 1950's. His car passing tactics were to throw dynamite (gelignite) at other cars. At one point the $40m budget was thought to have been secured and 'CON AIR' , 'LARA CROFT' and 'EXPENDABLES 2' director Simon West was attached to direct. What happened to that movie? The main investor was a multi-millionaire physician who owned a football team before he was sent to Federal Prison for allegedly hiring a convicted hitman to collect a debt. It gets weirder... Some people have problems with directions, or parking. I have problems with zippers and shoelaces and this has plagued me for 60+ years. And no I'm not left-handed. My wife is and we discussed that in an earlier episode. And we reveal why the Big Lie of the Personal Development World was "Hugs Not Drugs". Whoever thought hugs were better than drugs obviously never did any Class A narcotics. But don't try this at home, kids, it's just a memorable cautionary tale from someone who was ravenously hungry at the conclusion of the podcast. Inspiring people,

Two-time winner of the prestigious Booker Prize, Peter Carey is Australia's most distinguished author. Among his works are Oscar and Lucinda, The True History of the Kelly Gang, Jack Maggs and Parrott and Olivier in America. A Long Way From Home delves into the story of racism in Australia and the oppression of the indigenous aboriginal peoples who inhabited the continent for two centuries before the white man and colonialism arrived. The novel does this by focusing on the Redex, an auto trial which featured a voyage around Australia starting in Sydney. Real Estate Uncensored - Real Estate Sales & Marketing Training Podcast
Many rental property owners have tenants because they failed to sell the property. But what happens when you run into an investor? Why is it important to start the conversation with questions about why the home didn't sell? And how many contacts do you need per day to succeed at prospecting? In this episode, we take a tour at REDEX and talk about the success principles of top prospectors. In the marketing world, what we love doing is building trust with potential customers. -Justin Zimmerman Three Things We Learned How you can build trust with rental property owners Many owners of rental properties wanted to sell but couldn't and now they have a property and a tenant that they have to manage by themselves. As an agent, you can bring value even if you just help them determine the right price for the rent. When your prospects figure out how little they know about rental properties and how much money they lose by not knowing what to do, they will be more likely to work with you. How asking questions reveals pain points Ask questions instead of starting a monologue about how great your services are. When you ask questions, you get to know all of their pain points that you need to overcome. It's easier to persuade someone when you come up with a specific solution to their problem. How to flip the script when a rental property owner isn't looking to sell Don't close the conversation if you hear that a rental property owner isn't looking to sell. If they aren't looking to sell, it means they're looking to expand their rental property business, which means they're always looking to buy. Top prospectors keep track of their appointments and how many contacts they need to set an appointment. On average, it's anywhere between 35 to 50 contacts per day, but keep in mind that a contact isn't just a phone number. A contact is someone you have a meaningful conversation with. If you call a number and the person on the other side doesn't want to talk with you at all, you shouldn't count them as a contact. Guest Bio Justin Zimmerman is the director of content development at REDX and a content strategist with a background in real estate. He started off in real estate at 24 and built a software that took local MLS housing data and transformed it into a format easy to understand both by buyers and sellers. This helped him gain a competitive advantage in a profession where the average age was 47. His software was so successful that he started training other agents to become Certified Market Advisors and went from being a simple agent to managing 51 people. Today, he uses his real estate and marketing knowledge to help agents create content that eliminates the need for prospecting and builds a strong database. Gene Volpe is the founder of GVI Media and has over 10 years of experience in real estate marketing. With over 200 transactions under his belt, Gene is known as an authority in his field and is often invited to speak at events. You can find more about Gene at http://www.genevolpe.com/about-gene/#.

We look at the number of people who don't finish the Dakar Rally. It is a very tough course, expensive to compete in and there is some unforgiving terrain, so the failure rate is very high. The vehicles aren't stock, so they are heavily modified to make them capable of surviving the terrain at speed, whilst trying to keep the weight as low as possible. There are some fundamental changes to the vehicle, including moving the radiator to behind the cabin. There is nothing in the car that doesn't need to be there. Recovery is another issue. You have to be able to self recover, so vehicle design is done with recovery as a big issue. Bruce talks about how the change in temperature in the sand dunes can make a big difference in how hard the driving is. We talk about the mental preparation that you need to be a Dakar Rally driver. How can you prepare to do some epic Big Dune driving. We look at the technique required to drive down Big Dunes. It is not as easy as it looks and getting the technique correct is really important. Bruce talks about the Australian Safaris, which was a smaller version of the Rally. It no longer runs because of the cost to run the event, which is sad. The Redex trials were a precursor to all of this and gave a big boost to the Australian 4 wheel drive industry. The Rallies are a big bart of 4WD tourism, and in countries like Chile, hundreds of thousands of tourists go to Chile to visit some of the places that are highlighted by the Dakar Rally and the Desert Challenge. We discuss Bruce's experience as a mechanic and the kinds of things that he learnt that helped him with his Rally driving. We talk about some of his driving in Asian countries. Richard Wolinsky and Peter Carey at KPFA Peter Carey, whose latest novel is A Long Way from Home, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. In the interview, he discusses the reasons behind the novel, why it took so long to write about the native Australians, and the relationship between his own life and his fiction.
