Heidi Winn is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a private practice in Fairfield, Iowa, who learned about NARM as she was grieving the loss of her teenage son, Finn, to suicide. In sharing this deeply personal story of loss, Heidi hopes listeners will feel a sense of hope and connection with themselves in their learning process, and be able to “experience a sense of the effulgence; the richness that I have had from this learning.” Heidi intentionally calls her son before he began transitioning her ‘then-daughter’ to describe the evolution of identity that took place. Heidi’s journey with her then-daughter began roughly five years ago, when she began harming herself, and eventually attempted suicide four times in one year and spent over three months in a hospital for her own safety. Heidi shares that it was during the hospital stay that her then-daughter finally opened up both to himself as well as to his family about what was going on inside, and reported to Heidi, “I had a moment of clarity last night. I'm a boy inside and I want to be called Finn.” This clarity had a profound effect on his suicidality, which dropped overnight from a seven on the hospital assessment scale (the highest intentionality and suicidal thoughts) to zero. As a NARM Therapist, Heidi reflects back on this time with insight and self-compassion, recognizing how she was at times misattuned to her son and the ways that she unconsciously saw her children as extensions of her own identity. What has been described as parental narcissism, NARM helped Heidi to understand these dynamics within their relationship, and most importantly, to have “compassion for who we are, and where we were, and what we did, and that we did the best [we could].” To their devastation, Finn did commit suicide in his 8th grade year, while the family was dealing with financial barriers to purchasing the hormonal treatments that were helping him navigate his body’s maturation and menstrual cycle. Heidi shares the profound learning that she went through in grieving and integrating Finn’s death, including the ways that she has learned to navigate her grief through staying in touch with the complexity of her love and sadness. The ability to be with the complexity of her emotion and experience after losing Finn, is what is described in NARM as her psychobiological capacity to be with her own inner experience. With support from her community and family, Heidi describes the ways that she used her agency to direct her own experience and manage when she was overwhelmed by fear and despair. Heidi closes the podcast reflecting on the ways that her relationship to her living daughter has changed, in that she has let go of trying to know what her daughter’s truth is or control her in the same ways that she might have before. Not only has NARM helped Heidi to be with the complexity of her own inner experience, its influence has also supported her to continue to allow others to be complicated and unfolding in their lives as well. When she supports other parents of transgender people, she notices that she has a bigger capacity to “be with the not knowing,” of who they are and who they will become. This depth has brought big changes to her practice as a psychotherapist, as she gives more space to her clients to learn who they are and what they want for themselves. As Sarah so beautifully reflects, it’s “a spiritual experience to sit with somebody who is becoming fully themselves.” *** About Heidi Heidi Winn is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who has a private practice in Fairfield, Iowa. She has worked in the mental health field for over 30 years and has incorporated modalities stemming from Jungian Depth psychology, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and EMDR. Heidi is now a NARM therapist, working to support clients with developmental and complex trauma to sit with and uncover barriers to their aliveness and truth. The Only Questions to Ask Yourself When Learning to Trust Your Hunger Scale: Am I hungry? Am I full? My friends and fellow perfectionists, this holiday season, I want you to give yourself the grace to enjoy them. I know how hard it is to forgive ourselves when we fall short of our goals. In this episode, I’m talking about how setting realistic expectations for yourself will help you manage the holidays with your head held high. The Chief Complaint: "I Have No Grace For Myself During the Holidays" The concept of grace is something many women struggle with applying to themselves. When we make a plan for the holidays, or even outside the holidays, and for whatever reasons we don’t stick to it, us perfectionist women can be so hard on ourselves. But what if you learned how you can instead show yourself some grace? Setting Realistic Goals for Yourself The first thing I want you to do after listening to this episode is to take some time looking at the goals you’ve set for yourself this holiday period. Critically and realistically look at them. Are these goals ones that you will actually stick to? If you’ve planned to work out 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week - is this realistic with the commitments you have this season? If it is, great! If not, sit with yourself to create some smaller, more realistic expectations. Let’s say you did set that exercise goal. If you don’t manage to meet this high expectation you set for yourself, you’re more unlikely to forgive yourself for falling short. Instead of setting huge expectations, let’s talk about how you can set smaller goals and settle yourself into the gray zone. Focus on The Hunger Scale Your goals don’t need to just be about your approach to exercise over the holidays. You can also set realistic goals for your food. You know that I’m a huge advocate for intuitive eating and listening to your own hunger scale. If picking up your hunger signals is the only thing you focus on this holiday season, that’s fantastic. If you choose to eat when you’re not hungry or eat when you’re beyond full, that’s okay. Choose to forgive yourself in these moments and then wait to eat when you’re next hungry again. You can create your own sweet spot for your nutrition and food intake. It’s all about listening to what your body wants and honoring it. Yes, it takes practice, but I know you can find your own sweet spot. Homework for Women Physicians Whatever goals you have set for yourself this holiday season, I want you to evaluate it today. Take the space you need to really check in with where you are and what you want to achieve over the holidays. Let me know in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why you should reevaluate your expectations [4:45] How you can relieve pressure for yourself when you enter the gray zone [5:45] How to set smaller goals to give yourself grace this holiday seasons [8:15] What happens when you give yourself a good reason to set your holiday expectations [14:15] How to give yourself grace if you eat too much at once [20:00] How you can find your own personal sweet spot with intuitive eating and nutrition-based decisions that work for you [23:30] Quotes “Believe it or not, having small goals are where you have to start! We just forget to start there because we never think it’s going to be WOW enough.” [7:42] “Your body might tell you that it wants to have some carbs. Your body might tell you that it prefers to be five pounds heavier. Your body might tell you it prefers to be five pounds lighter. But it’s such a beautiful thing. When we can get to the place where we are willing to honor our unique body, that is when we start to become the person where we have complete food freedom.” [15:52] “Intuitive eating works by you not restricting because then you actually are able to decide what it is you really do want, instead of what your brain is telling you that you want because you’re restricting it.” [20:58] “There is a sweet spot for you all where you can achieve what you want doing it your way.” [23:47] Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Register Now! Ou host Sarah Buino is joined by therapist, social worker, and author Daniel Shaw to discuss his seminal book Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation. Daniel explores the theme of traumatic narcissism from a developmental and trauma-informed perspective. In his work, he connects the challenging symptoms and behaviors of clients diagnosed with Borderline and Bipolar personality disorders to the deeper understanding that they were raised in a highly traumatic environment by narcissistic caregivers. His underlying message for listeners is that, “It's important to understand what's going on in the mind of the narcissistic traumatizer in order to help patients free themselves from those relationships, in order for therapists to help the patient, and in order for the patients to help themselves.” Sarah and Daniel discuss the common thread in Daniel’s work and NARM. Much like in NARM, in which the therapists support clients to reconnect with their own agency, Daniel’s intention in working with people that have experienced narcissistic abuse is to help them “retrieve a faith in themselves that has been taken from them by the narcissistic abuser.” Sarah and Daniel close by discussing the role of the therapist, and how therapists can support the client in this process of self-reflection through being fully attuned and letting them know that we are “in their corner.” If the therapist is able to do this, the therapeutic relationship then becomes a place where the client can begin to feel this unconditional, fully present relationship from another, so that they can begin to feel it for themselves. How do you manage symptoms of gut troubles while trying to be intuitive and NOT deprive yourself? I'm kicking off Season 3 of the Speaking of Hungry podcast talking about our gut health!! In this episode I'm chatting with Beth Rosen, MS, RD, CDN, all about non-diet approaches to digestive issues and gastrointestinal (GI) health. We're talking about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD - aka, acid reflux), gastroparesis, and Celiac disease. Intuitive eating means not only listening to our body's hunger and satiety signals but also means understanding what foods feel good in our bodies. Our discussions covers: the right way to approach elimination diets to help with gut symptoms but also avoid deprivation in the long run. how we must consider the WHOLE person - stress levels, sleep, exercise, medical issues, medications - and not just food alone. low-FODMAP diets and why people should not stay in the "elimination" phase longer than necessary. why high FODMAP foods are not "bad" foods. how to handle elimination diets to help the gut heal without feeling triggered if you have a disordered eating past. maladaptive eating that occurs when we fear food because of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. how to REALLY determine if there is a gluten sensitivity or Celiac disease. how staying on elimination diets for long periods of time can limit the diversity of the gut microbiome. to differentiate between restricting foods to manage symptoms vs. food restriction in hopes of losing weight. how dieting and disordered eating can lead to a slow down of the gut and in some cases, gastroparesis. different eating disorders and the types of GI troubles they may cause. If you struggle with gut issues you have to listen to my chat with Beth! I’m thrilled to share an exclusive “sneak peek” of the Aligned & Balanced small group coaching program enrolling now! The first program SOLD OUT, and registration for the new section closes August 17...I will cap the group at 15 so limited spots now remain. Register here to save your spot now! https://andrea-seeney-1531.mykajabi.com/offers/rzo6eYKW The secret is out: work/life balance doesn't exist. A global pandemic, children to home school, a career or side business to manage, a partner’s work from home to manage, household and community commitments...it's all overwhelming. It is possible, however, to simplify and reclaim control. Think of it as a totally new concept: work/life integration. Because that is what’s happening now more than ever...You are the same, 1 person serving many different people in many different ways, making the best decisions you can in each moment of every day. And you deserve to put yourself on the list. In this small group coaching program, we will dive deep on creating your vision for your future, aligning your priorities, defining what is “enough” to meet your needs, saying no to all the noise that distracts you from them, learn simple systems and productivity tips to help you navigate your day, and some easy ways you can give yourself a little love and grace. In week one, we will begin to dismantle work/life balance. (Don’t worry we will build it back - promise!) The result is the confidence in knowing that priority realignment and putting simple systems in place can help integrate your work and family life, putting you back in the driver’s seat. The learning objectives of Aligned & Balanced Month 1 include.. ...Define your priorities and set your boundaries based on your vision ...Identify your obstacles and strategies to overcome them ...Adopt simple systems for your work/life integration ...Incorporate daily self care ...Create your daily success plan to stay focused This program works! The support, encouragement, and accountability from the community of like minded women who are joining you is a game changer. After 4 weeks you will have a sustainable work/life integration system that puts you on the list, simplifies your life, and leads to more overall happiness. That’s a pretty good return for $397! Listen to this episode to decide if A&B is right for you. LIMITED spots remain, and registration ends August 17. We kick off our first live Zoom call on Tuesday night, August 18th at 9pm est / 8 pm cst. REGISTER NOW! “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” “If I just work harder, I’ll be more successful.” “I need the latest strategy and funnel for my product to get big!” I used to think these exact things. I used to say these exact words. I used to work so hard that I was putting my mental and physical health on the line. And I didn’t have to do that in order to be successful. I didn’t have to do things harder. I didn’t have to work from a place of stress. And neither do you! In this week’s episode of the Epic Success Podcast, I deep dive into the 3 Mistakes That Entrepreneurs Make That Keep Them Stuck. Do you find yourself doing any of these? Lean in and listen to find out! The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are: Don’t chase strategy and funnels to be a successful entrepreneur. The way we’ve been taught to achieve success is through strategies, through funnels, and through frameworks. Doing those things solely will not bring you success. Listen in - what you need to hear is a way for you to achieve the success you desire. [4:00] Working harder doesn’t equal success. What do you think about “working harder”? What do you think about “time equals money”? I want to tell you… Success is all about working from a different place and space in your mindset and in your thinking. You have to be intentional with doing the work around your thoughts. [12:50] Comparison to the person you look up to will cause you to doubt, judge, and self-sabotage your success. How are you comparing your business, your success, and your life to other entrepreneurs around you? Comparison is a defense mechanism - which you CAN rewire in your brain to instead have the belief that Success is Inevitable. [19:30] If you see yourself falling into these mistakes, it’s okay! It’s not your fault! Your brain’s job is to keep you safe! Your brain is doing what it is wired to do. Now that you are aware of how your brain is wired, you can do the steps around rewiring it. You can do the work around your thinking and mindset. You can be the creator of your thoughts so you can create the reality and the life you’ve always wanted! Tell me: What are you going to do this week to start rewiring your brain? I’d love to know! Tell me by sending me a message on Facebook or a DM on Instagram. I can’t wait to hear from you! I don’t want you to miss out on this... The Unleashed Entrepreneur video series is coming really soon! I see business owners trying to make it big by playing it safe. Operating in fear… Saying no to risks… Staying in familiarity and comfort… And it rarely works. As entrepreneurs, we should be showing up big! passionate! and confident! And it starts with your mindset. It starts with your thoughts. In this week’s episode of the Epic Success Podcast, I talk with “Not Your Average Grandma”, Laurie Wright. Laurie is a 61 year old entrepreneur and a power house who is not only helping people find their passion, but helping them monetize that passion! Laurie went through my Epic Success Academy (ESA) and now has her Neurocoaching Certification™. She joined me on this week’s episode to deep dive into her transformation story, uncover how she found her perfect niche, and share the breakthroughs she’s had because of ESA. So turn up the volume and lean in! The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are: “Before I started working with Dr. Shannon, I operated from a place of fear and a belief of “I don’t know enough”. -Laurie Wright Some of the biggest things that hold us back are the beliefs we have in our own head. Self-sabotaging and self-limiting thoughts are automated in our brain over time and become a part of what we believe. What we think and what we say to ourselves will become the belief system we operate in. And we have the power to rewire our brain and choose the thoughts we want to believe. [7:25] “I lived a long time living under my logical brain…” -Laurie Wright You can operate out of logic, safety, comfort, familiarity. You can play it safe. But you have to ask yourself: Are you serving people to the fullest when you stay in your comfort zone? Are you settling with where you are at? You have to be passionate about what you do, who you serve, and how you show up! Don’t settle! [8:55] “It’s so much more than me being a better entrepreneur. It’s about me being better so that the world is better.” -Laurie Wright Epic Success Academy has given Laurie the mindset, awareness, and the lens she didn’t know she needed to show up, serve, and create the life and business she always dreamed of having. She now knows that it is achievable and it will happen. [25:15] You can show up big in your business and operate from a place of passion instead of familiarity. And you can do it by being the creator of your thoughts. You have the power and ability to shift the way you think, confront the self-limiting and self-sabotaging beliefs, and rewire your brain for your advantage! Tell me: What are you going to do this week to be the creator of your thoughts? I’d love to know! Tell me by sending me a message on Facebook or a DM on Instagram. I can’t wait to hear from you! I don’t want you to miss out on this... The Unleashed Entrepreneur video series is coming soon! Are you ready to Learn the 3 hidden tactics that successful entrepreneurs use to fast-track to 7 figures & beyond? Are you ready to Finally Stop the Tug-of-war with Overwhelm, Procrastination and "Imposter Syndrome" for good? Then this is for you! She is always bringing new guests to help her audience growth and live an epic life.” I absolutely love sharing the brain-based process of creating success in your life & business with you each week on the Epic Success podcast! When I first started out in my business I was a mess. Like… A really. big. mess. I was all over the place. I felt like I couldn’t do everything I wanted to do. I was juggling my home duties and being a wife. I was newly pregnant and running a business and my non-profit. And I honestly thought I was going to have to give something up.I thought I was going to have to compromise my life and everything I spent years working towards. And then I realized (through lots of intentional study and work) that I could have the success I always dreamed of having…And I could have it by rewiring my brain. I went to school to study the way our brains are wired and this is what I found out…Our brains are set to autopilot the thoughts we repeatedly tell ourselves, and our brains are wired to keep us safe and familiar. That being said,I decided to challenge the way our brains are wired and I came up with my own method of rewiring our brains for our advantage. And I teach those science, brain-based methods in my Epic Success Academy. In this week’s episode of the Epic Success Podcast, I talk with three of my Epic Success Academy members: Angela Williams Stillwell, Miki Sturges, and Julia Black. These three incredible members have created the lives and businesses they’ve always dreamed of having with the help of the Epic Success Academy. Because of Epic Success Academy, they have been able to confront their negative thinking, rewire their brains to their advantage, and create the reality they’ve wanted. Listen to their stories. You’re not going to want to miss it! The biggest take-aways from today’s episode are: “I have a story to tell and I didn’t go through everything I went through to not share that story.” -Angela Williams Stillwell Every single one of us has a story. A big, important, purposeful story. There is a need for us as individuals to show up and share our story in a big and impactful way. When we show up and share those stories, it changes lives for the better. [4:15] “So many thoughts stopped me… But I knew I was meant to show up and walk in my calling.” -Miki Sturges Negative thoughts will get in the way of what you are supposed to do. Self-sabotaging thoughts will hold you back from showing up and serving your audience. Because of Epic Success Academy, our members have been able to rewire their brain and their thinking and walk in what they knew God was calling them to. [19:03] “When I feel the fear, I don’t have the negative thoughts and emotions that I used to hold onto because my brain and my thinking has been rewired.” -Julia Black Julia had negative thoughts that stuck with her for close to 40 years. When she went through Epic Success Academy, she was able to rewire that thinking, replace that thinking, and feel more empowered than she ever had in her life. [44:02] Learning to rewire your brain is 100% possible. I know it because I rewired my own brain and I’ve helped hundreds of others do it too! If you’re finding yourself wanting that same kind of transformation, then I’ve got great news for you! The Rise of the Unleashed Entrepreneur Free Virtual Event is coming soon! Tiffany shares her recent experience with distance medicine as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses some of the concerns and implications of expanding the use of telemedicine appointments, electronic medical records, and online patient portals. The mission of AiArthritis is to ensure all patient experiences and perspectives are counted - and are included as equal to all other stakeholders - so, together, we can solve the most pressing problems impacting education, advocacy, and research. Telemedicine and electronic medical records are evolving rapidly, spurred in large part by the need to provide care to patients remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. But what is working well, what is challenging, and what do we need to discuss further as the future of telemedicine evolves? Addressing the benefits and barriers now can improve our healthcare experiences today and tomorrow. So join the conversation and share your experiences and concerns. What do you like or dislike about distance appointments or patient portals? What benefits do you see moving forward? Are there problems you would like to see addressed? You can join the conversation today in our online Facebook Group - COVID-19 & AiArthritis, just search for the post featuring this episode.
