There may be no more critical issue facing the legal profession than reregulation of legal services. Amid an escalating crisis in access to justice, proponents of regulatory reform argue that the only way to meaningfully address the crisis is to loosen restrictions on non-lawyers investing in and providing legal services. So critical is the issue that GPSolo, the magazine of the American Bar Association's Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division, has devoted its most recent issue to the topic, assembling a roster of contributors who are among the nation's leading experts on regulatory reform. In this special LawNext episode in conjunction with GPSolo, five of those contributors come together to share and discuss their views on reregulation: Zachariah DeMeola, director of legal education and the legal profession at the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System. Joseph Gartner, director and counsel, ABA Center for Innovation. Judy Perry Martinez, past president of the ABA and former chair of the ABA's Presidential Commission on the Future of Legal Services, whose 2016 Report on the Future of Legal Services influenced many of the reform initiatives now underway. Patrick Palace, the past president of the Washington State Bar Association and current member of the executive council of the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the board of the ABA Center for Innovation, who served as editor of the GPSolo issue. Vice Chief Justice Ann A. Scott Timmer of the Arizona Supreme Court, who chaired the Arizona Supreme Court's Task Force on the Delivery of Legal Services, which recommended rules ultimately adopted by the court that created a new tier of legal services provider and eliminated the ban on non-lawyer ownership. Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 13, verses 1-9Jesus begins teaching the people by the seashore in parables - and relates the parable of the sower and the seed. But rather than talking about the parable itself today (you'll have to wait until Friday for that), we talk about learning how to pivot with grace and learning to speak the language of our neighbors.Note: For some reason, I'm experiencing technical difficulties this week with my recorder (and so you'll hear static on occasion or it may skip at times). I apologize for the inconvenience. I'm aware of the issue and working on it - I hope to have it sorted out by next Monday. Thanks for your patience.

The reason we’re doing Facebook versus Google is because we get questions like this all the time, about this topic. Should I be doing Google? Should I be doing Facebook? Should I be doing both? We’re going to go through all that today in this episode and answer that for you. And there’s no better way to do that, but to have Kasim Aslam on the show today, he’s the founder and CEO of Solutions 8, one of the world’s top ranked Google ads agency. We work pretty closely together and refer business back and forth to each other because it’s just too complicated to be good at ads within both platforms, and we’re both dedicated to provided the best service we can for our clients.During this fascinating and insightful conversion:– We chat about the differences between the two platforms, and what to expect when signing up for the Google ads experience.– Kasim blows our minds with a deep dive into all the ways Google touches our lives, and how much data they are actually gleaning from their multitude of touch points.– For example, Kasim reveals Google reaches about 90% of every internet user on the planet, and about 65% of those every day.– Google has a mind-blowing 70 million demographic and psychographic profiling factors that they use in order to catalog people, Facebook has 55,000.– In fact, with Google Analytics on 99% of front-facing websites, and all of their other touchpoints (Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, etc.) their AI algorithm works so well, the engineers at Google don’t know exactly how it works.– We also go into a powerful discussion about how the iOS update is impacting both Facebook and Google. (Note: For both, we recommend you hiring a professional. It’s no longer easy for someone to do on their own or without a specialist.)– The question about why you should not write one check to one agency is answered. (Answer: It’s all so complex, no single agency will have the knowledge and inside connections to serve you the best.)– And so much more!In the end, we reveal that for businesses of different sizes at different points in their growth, Facebook may be better or Google may be better. But when you combine the power of both, they will work more efficiently and give you a better ROAS for a variety of reasons. So, listen to this amazing conversation, we learned a lot and I’m sure you will too!All right. Thank you everybody for listening and we’ll talk to you soon. Also, we’re in the trenches every day running ads. We’ve met and passed the 1 year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic and cases of burnout are off the charts. We’re tired of Zoom. We’re tired of masks. Far too many kids are stuck at home instead of at school. The list could go on but the result is obvious: we’re burned out. The effect can be all the more profound for beleaguered security professionals who often struggle with burn-out even at the best of times. Jack and Dave return in this mini-episode for a quick conversation about how to identify and respond when you’re feeling like you’re burnt. While often it’s Dave and a guest doing most of the talking, in this episode Jack is driving. He shares from his deep experience on the topic, starting with an explanation of Maslach’s burn-out inventory which provides a structured, clear guide for determining just how crispy you are. The inventory is tailored for different professions, and while there is not one specific to cybersecurity, Jack and Dave explore specific aspects of our industry that up the stakes for burn out.Importantly, Jack explains why getting help from a pro versus leaning on friends and family can be essential. We wrap up with some time-honored approaches to restoring yourself so that you’re ready to jump back in the action once again.Note: For this short episode we tested a new production service and you’ll also note we updated the website and our branding as well. And transcripts! We now have 100% more (raw) transcripts than before. We’ll be unleashing all this magic soon on a new full-length podcast we recorded this past week with the one and only Melanie Ensign.

NOTE: For extended show notes, see https://tonyloyd.com/aziz-abu-sarah MEJDI Tours sees tourism as an opportunity to transform lives through dual narratives and by strengthening local communities. Aziz Abu Sarah is a peace-builder, social entrepreneur, cultural educator, and author of Crossing Boundaries: A Traveler’s Guide To World Peace. But Aziz wasn’t always a peacemaker. “I grew up very angry,” Aziz says. “I didn’t have any Jewish or Israeli friends growing up until I was 18 years old. “In Jerusalem, if you don’t speak Hebrew, you’re not going to go to college. You’re not going to work. Your chances of success in life are minimal. In my high school, it was mandatory to learn Hebrew. But I went through three years of high school refusing to learn even a word of Hebrew. “I escaped from that class. I told my teachers that I was not willing to come to class because Hebrew was the language of the enemy - the people who killed my brother. I was seven or eight years old the first time I was shot at. I had a lot of trauma to deal with. I still have to deal with it. “And so when I was 18, I realized that if I don’t learn Hebrew, I will not have any chance of success in my life. So I went to study Hebrew. I studied Hebrew in a class where I was the only Palestinian, and almost all of the people in the class were Jewish immigrants to Israel. “I remember thinking I’m here to learn the language. I’m not here to make friends. I’m not going to talk to anyone. Apparently, that doesn’t work if you want to learn a language. They force you to sit together, ask questions. ‘Hey, how are you? Where are you from? What kind of music you like?’ “And that’s how we became friends. It wasn’t over political things. It was over simple things like what coffee you drink and what music you like. I love Western country music, which most Palestinians do not agree with me. In that class, I found a couple of people who love country music. “So we would sit down and talk about Johnny Cash. It started with that and eventually got to deeper conversations and political issues. But we had this space of ‘Wait a second. We have other identities that we can connect.’ And it’s not only ‘You’re Arab or a Jew, and therefore I have to hate you because of that.’ “And in that classroom, I made my first Jewish friends. From that point on, I understood that what divides us is a wall of ignorance, fear, and hatred. I wanted to put cracks in that wall. That became my mission in life.” Today, Aziz runs MEJDI Tours. “MEJDI means honor and respect,” Aziz says. “We start with that for the local communities, those we work with, and all our travelers.” MEJDI originated the Dual Narrative™ method that brings both sides of a conflict together as travel guides presenting their respective narrative. This approach was first introduced in the Holy Land and reaped remarkable results there and throughout the world. MEJDI Tours goes against the grain by rejecting the model of traditional consumer tourism—a highly commercialized experience that supports big business and often damages local communities. Also, as peace-builders, we are tackling the challenge of a divided and polarized world. NOTE: For full show notes, see https://tonyloyd.com/isabella-he. High school students work on behalf of those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In the United States, 1 in 54 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Unemployment rates for individuals with ASD are approximately 85%. More than half a million individuals with ASD will enter the workforce in the next decade. The need for specialized vocational training is growing by the minute. A CDC study found that 50 percent of children with severe ASD only have access to school-based treatment services. And 17 percent of children with ASD do not have access to occupational, speech, or language therapy whatsoever. At-home therapy is difficult for those with special needs, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. With most in-person therapy sessions closed, many parents of children with ASD don’t have the proper material and guidance to provide effective at-home therapy. Referring to the 5 Principles of Powerful Honesty from my new book The Naked Truth, I analyse a confrontation Sam Harris with Ben Affleck on the Real Time with Bill Maher Show. How do we get more people involved in social innovation? NOTE: For extended show notes, see https://tonyloyd.com/tom-dawkins Tom Dawkins is the founder of StartSomeGood, the leading home of cause-driven crowdfunding, innovative partnerships, and social entrepreneur education. I first interviewed Tom nearly five years ago, on December 14, 2015. You can hear our previous interview at https://tonyloyd.com/018. Tom keeps coming back to one fundamental question. How do we get more people involved? “All of us are smarter than any of us,” he says. “It’s essential in a world that is evolving so rapidly. It’s never good enough to come up with a single good idea, a single solution, because things that were proven to work yesterday won’t work tomorrow. “Those of us who care about the future, the planet, and the community, we need not just to find innovations, we need to build an innovation muscle. As a community, the best way to innovate is to ensure that every perspective is heard. Everyone has an opportunity to participate in that process of creating a better future. “One of my foundational beliefs is that all the ideas are already out there. They’re often held by someone who has lived experience of a particular challenge. “But so many people don’t know how to get their ideas out into the world. They don’t know how to turn it into a story that will resonate with people. They don’t know how to identify: Who is it for? What’s the value I create for them? “They don’t have access to a network or impact investors or other types of supporters. So, we started with crowdfunding, but since then, we’re adding all these pieces that might help people make that leap as well.” What Do Early-Stage Social Entrepreneurs Need? “There are three key types of capital they need to underpin progress and impact. “There’s intellectual capital, which is knowing how to do things or accessing the people who do. “Financial capital is in some ways to fill the gaps of your intellectual capital – to pay for things that you can’t acquire in other ways. And to boost growth and reach. “And then relational capital, which helps you not to burn out. It’s more than accessing people who know stuff. It’s people who care about you – people who understand the journey. “ The Next Level of Evolution for StartSomeGood Today, StartSomeGood builds capacity for early-stage social innovators in several ways. They run accelerators on behalf of corporate partners. They have the Good Hustle, a ten-week social enterprise design course. And they offer other workshops. They run live crowdfunding events called Pitch for Good. They run inspirational events such as their annual Starting Good virtual summit. They provide the Starting Good Network, an exclusive community for those committed to changing the world. And they continue to innovate on their crowdfunding platform. For many healthcare startups and established vendors, partnering with payers is a crucial part of their business plan. And as we know, selling in healthcare is hard. It's even harder when you don't understand how these large corporations work. What do they want? How do they set priorities? How do they make purchasing decisions? How long does that process take? The list goes on, and if you're strategizing without this knowledge you're going to struggle. That's where this episode comes in. Today we're talking with Andrew Adrian-Karlin, Director of Business Platform Product at Highmark Health. Andrew sheds some light on how payers decide what to do and who they decide to do it with. This episode will help you build an effective framework for preparing, approaching, and successfully partnering with payers. You'll Learn What are “products” from a health insurance point of view? What is the purpose of health insurance? Note: This is the same question we went deep on with Steve Krupa from HealthEdge on Episode 145. Steve's answer is also worth a listen. What are some things that payers are interested in from a “business processing” perspective? How do payers set priorities? What's the typical timeline for bringing on a new vendor and what factors contribute to it? What are the challenges, both internally and externally, that need to be managed when bringing on a new vendor? What can/should vendors do to minimize these challenges and shorten the timeline? How do external factors like the CMS Interoperability Rule or the COVID-19 pandemic impact your priorities? And a little bonus here: Why no one – not payer, not vendor, not lawmaker, and not even the regulator – fully understands new regulations and how that creates an early mover advantage. What are the best ways to keep a pulse on what a health plan is trying to do so that you can partner with them? NOTE: For more tactics on this one, Jeff Byers gave us the journalists take on Episode 62. Andrew Adrian-Karlin Andrew Adrian-Karlin helps companies do new things by better applying technology. I'm proud to be transforming healthcare at Highmark Health. As the Director of Business Platform- Product at Highmark Health, Andrew focuses on building cross-functional teams and leading Product Managers. Your mind―and therefore your body―can be abused by many things. At times there are hindrances to healing―things or conditions that are causing the sickness or affliction―and that must be dealt with before healing can take place permanently. This teaching covers several such conditions AND how to achieve healing by dealing with them. ________________________________________ HINDRANCES TO HEALING HOW TO OVERCOME THEM Your mind - and therefore your body - can be abused by many things. At times there are hindrances to healing: things or conditions that are causing the sickness or affliction, and that must be dealt with before healing can take place permanently. Things such as: ► Unforgiveness, bitterness, or resentment [Mark 11:25-26] ► Envy and strife [James 3:16] ► Improper food, rest, sunshine, or exercise [Isaiah 30:15] ► Speaking evil of, or causing harm to, God’s ministers [1 Samuel 26:9] ► Involvement in the occult or in witchcraft [Deuteronomy 18:10-12] ► Association with religious cults [1 John 4:1-3 / 1 John 5:20] Whether sickness is caused by disobeying God through an unforgiving spirit, strife, or resentment … involvement in the occult … or association with religious cults … Jesus Christ is the answer! NOTE: For help with deliverance, consult the book, Healing Deliverance – Freedom from the Bondage of Satan, by Prince Handley. PROPER PRAYER Through prayer we can come to God and ask him to forgive us of all these things; we can also ask him to deliver us, if necessary! 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." In Psalm 50:15 we read, "Call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." PROPER PRAISE Praise is also an important element in healing and is definitely inter-connected with prayer and proper mental attitude. Praise lets God know you believe He will work in your situation. Learn to lift your hands up to God and praise Him several times a day, for as long as you want to. God lives in the praise of His people. “But You are holy, O You that inhabits the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3) The anointing breaks the yoke. Since God lives in the praise of His people, there is an anointing present with true praise, which can break an “assigned” attack on the body, mind or spirit. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” (Isaiah 10:27) Praise brings victory. King Jehoshaphat and the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem won a large battle utilizing praise. (Read 2 Chronicles Chapter 20, verses 1-30 in the Tanakh.) PROPER MENTAL ATTITUDE We see the importance of proper mental attitude in the life of Job. Job was afflicted by Satan with sore boils from his feet to his head. The devil destroyed Job’s wealth and killed his seven sons and three daughters and stole his health. Job’s experience was a rare, "once-in-the-Bible" case. It was allowed by God to prove that a certain man ("greatest of all the men in the East") would not curse God even if he lost everything, including his health. It shows that Satan is a "destroyer," who causes sickness and disease. It shows that God is a "healer," and that God calls sickness "captivity." Job was a just man; even God said so. His experience presents a question that lots of people ask: "Why?" NOTICE 7 THINGS ABOUT JOB'S CONDITION 1. Job’s case was unique; it was NOT an example! Don’t use it as an excuse to be sick. 2. Satan accused Job of serving God only because of God’s blessing, protection and help. 3. Satan is the one, the Bible says, who STOLE Job’s health, KILLED his children, and who DESTROYED his property. [Job, Chapters 1 and 2; John 10:10] 4. Job proved faithful in trial. Job did not sin with his lips or charge God foolishly. [Job 1:22 and 2:10] 5. The Bible calls Job’s sickness and his loss -- "captivity." [Job 42:10]. Jesus said, "If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” [John 8:36] 6. Job was healed! Because of proper mental attitude, Job prayed for his friends (who were not real friends); this was when God delivered Job. [Job 42:10] 7. "The Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before." … "The Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning." [Job 42:10-12] Even though Job lived on the other side of the cross (that is, before Christ)―not having the advantages of Christ’s work and authority over Satan as we do―he was still healed through prayer and proper mental attitude. A proper mental attitude will cause you to have an instinctive reaction to sickness and ill-health: you will refuse it … knowing it does NOT belong to you! You will speak to it, saying, "Sickness, I resist you in the name of Jesus Christ by whose stripes I am healed." Notice two things; you resisted the sickness by: 1) speaking to it; and, 2) using Scripture (the Word of God). The Holy Bible says in James 4:7, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." In Matthew 4:11, we see how Jesus resisted Satan. He did it the same way you are to do it: with the Word of God. Each time Jesus spoke to the devil, Jesus said, "It is written …" PROPER PHYSICAL PRACTICE Proper nutrition, rest, sunshine, and exercise are all beneficial to a proper mental attitude and maintenance of good health. Scriptural fasting and honoring the Lord’s Day or Sabbath contribute, also, to a proper mental attitude; and are laws of God with built-in bonuses of health and blessing. Read Isaiah Chapter 58. “Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; You will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.” (Isaiah 58:8-9) “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable, then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land ...” (Isaiah 58:13-14) You can be healed … walk in health … and help others to do the same. “You shall come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of corn comes in its season.” (Job 5:26-27). What does kidnapping have to do with ballroom dancing? The answer is: Nothing! However, this week’s movie manages to take all sorts of seemingly disparate concepts and fuse them together for one kooky caper. INSPECTOR MOM: KIDNAPPED IN TEN EASY STEPS (2007), starring Danica McKellar, Drew Waters, and Lar Park-Lincoln, is just the light fare needed after such an excruciating and traumatic year. You may even learn some fractions in the process! We also discuss piñatas, our favorite Simpsons quotes, and accidentally create a children’s book concept that may be mistaken for a porno. 52. In The Fire Has to Be In Your Belly, host William Glass sits down with Chander Arora, the founder and CEO of Red Eye Louie's. In today’s episode, we go deep into Chander’s entrepreneurial journey and how he went from driving a forklift in a textile factory to founding an international spirits brand. Chander is wide-open about both his successes and failures. There are some doozies from terrible losses on international shipments to nefarious hackers. Chander Arora is the Founder & CEO of Red Eye Louie’s a liquor brand with a number of unique spirits in its arsenal. Chander is an international expert in the spirits industry with 20+ years of experience. Chander started the company in 2011 by helping his daughter, Nina Arora, with her college project by creating the company's first product Vodquila (a crafted blend of Vodka and Tequila.) Chander turned his daughter's college assignment into an international spirits business. With his knowledge of chemistry, he is able to create all the formulas and recipes for each blend. Prior to starting Red Eye Louie’s, Chander came to the US from India while on business where he met the love of his life. As a self-starter and determined to make the American dream a reality he began buying and selling businesses that ranged from laundromats, convenience stores, real estate, and even truck stops. NOTE: For full transparency, it just so happens that Red Eye Louie’s recently opened up an equity crowdfunding round. The Emergency Department (ED) is a hard place to have serious illness discussions, whether it be goals of care or code status discussions, or whether or not to consider intubation for a seriously ill patient. Emergency physicians often don't have the time for in-depth discussions, nor have been trained on how to do so. There often is limited information about the patient, their functional status, or their prognosis. These are some of the most challenging and some of the most important conversations in medicine, as 75% of older adults visit the ED during the last 6 months of life (data thanks to this Alex Smith publication in Health Affairs! - https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/full/10.1377/hlthaff.2011.0922) So how do we have these urgent conversations in a time of crisis to ensure that patients receive care that aligns with their goals? We have Naomi George, researcher and ED physician extraordinaire from the University of New Mexico, and Kai Romero from UCSF and Hospice by the Bay to help answer this question. Naomi discuss her practical approach to crises communication that she published along with others (including previous GeriPal guest Kei Ouchi) in this Annals of Emergency Medicine publication titled "Managing Code Status Conversations for Seriously Ill Older Adults in Respiratory Failure." We also talk with Kai Romero about her Academic Life In Emergency Medicine blog post on "Work Grief: A Practical Primer for Emergency Medicine Providers". If there was ever a year to learn more about how certain herbs can reduce stress, it has to be 2020, right? In today’s episode, my guest — Vicki Shanta Retelny — explains how certain herbs known as “adaptogens” help your body adapt to stress by acting on the neuroendocrine system to thwart our stress response. Vicki*, a fellow registered dietitian nutritionist who started studying adaptogens in recent years, explains that as stress causes our sympathetic nervous system (our “fight or flight” response) to kick in, adaptogens dampen that response and allow for our para-sympathetic (the more calming side of our nervous system) to take over. She also discusses how adaptogens reduce the amount of cortisol that is released in response to stress. Other topics covered in this episode: The safety and effective doses of adaptogens The long history of adaptogen use in other cultures The different names of common adaptogens, including ashwaganda, holy basil, turmeric, ginseng and rhodiola The different classifications of adaptogens — primary, secondary and complimentary To round out my interview, Vicki urges listeners to look into the various adaptogens they’re interested in, in greater detail and reminds us that because these are all herbs they’re also a good way to increase plants in our diet. (Note: For a comprehensive discussion of plant-based diets, listen to my interview with Sharon Palmer, RD in The Game Changers Movie Episode.) Today’s guest is Soo Chuen Tan, founder and President at Discerene Group, based in Stamford, Connecticut. Discerene is a private partnership, which invests globally on behalf of several long-term institutions and families. Soo Chuen is a long-term value investor and the depth of his commitment to his craft came through in our conversation. He’s able to seamlessly translate a high-level philosophy of investing into the practical hard work of executing fundamental securities research and the critical psychological aspect of being a contrarian who is at the same time constructive. We talked about Mega Study, a trailblazing South Korean online test prep company that saw its star fade when VC-fueled rivals emerged, but that Soo Chuen’s research revealed to have durable long-term value. If you would like notes from today’s episode, please subscribe to our free newsletter. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Feel free to email info@investingindepth.com with feedback. 1:40 Journey to becoming an investor 3:05 Mega Study is the leading online high school KSAT test preparation company in South Korea, supplying the country’s “educational arms race” with a must-have service that has strong demand 7:00 Top teachers in Korea are pop stars with celebrity status and compensation 8:40 How Mega Study hit Soo Chuen’s radar screen: Looking for companies protected by structural barriers to entry (i.e., “economic moats”) at times when they are out of favor 10:00 Focusing on economic moats in evaluating the business as an investment. Mega Study has attractive economic characteristics as the owner of a self-reinforcing, two-sided platform 14:47 An opportunity to invest with belts and suspenders that provide a margin of safety: Venture-backed competitors ate into Mega Study’s business and the stock price declined below tangible book value (i.e., cash and value of property, plant, and equipment on its balance sheet, consisting primarily of real estate) 17:05 How Mega Study widened it economic moat: Adopting bundled pricing to transition from being a multi-homing network to a single-homing network 21:18 The psychology behind being a value investor taking a contrarian position. The hallmark of value investing is, in the words of Warren Buffett, “Being greedy when others are fearful and being fearful when others are greedy.” Four defining characteristics of value investors are: Independent mindedness. “The best value investors we know tend to be cats, not dogs.… They are comfortable marching to the beat of their own drums and making up their own minds about things with little regard for conventional wisdom or a desire to fit in or please others. They deliberately invert propositions and test counterfactuals.” Natural skepticism while at the same time being constructive Using mean reverting mental models Deferred hedonism (i.e., patience) 29:25 The Discerene research process: Combining “The Harvard Business School Approach” and “The Chicago School Approach” 34:40 Soo Chuen’s secret sauce: Compounding and building out a network 39:50 Conducting due diligence on hard assets 43:30 Areas of uncertainty and risk 45:20 Sizing the investment 47:40 Monitoring the investment 48:55 Recommended reading On Korean education, Education Fever by Michael Seth On investing: Securities Analysis by Graham and Dodd; Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits by Phil Fisher; all of Warren Buffett’s letters; Seth Klarman’s Margin of Safety; various books by Michael Mauboussin; Howard Marks’ The Most Important Thing; Edward Chancellor’s Capital Account More broadly on economics, business, and finance: the work of John Keynes, Jean Tirole, John Sutton, Joseph Schumpeter, Hyman Minsky, Phil Rosenzweig, as well as current and former Harvard professors Michael Porter, David Yoffie, Clay Christensen, John Wells, Bob Merton, Andre Perold, Stuart Gilson, Peter Tufano, and so many others. In our last +1, we talked about the INFINITE power of Consistency. Recall that our (always evolving) equation for Awesome now goes something like this: Awesome = Time x (Energy x Focus x What’s Important) Consistency (Note: That equation applies to both our Work and our Love.) So… As I was preparing for the Work session of our Carpe Diem module for our Mastery Series, I was thinking about the #1 theme I wanted to bring home. (Note: For the Energy session, it was making the distinction between Energized Tranquility vs. Enervated Anxiety.) Initially, I thought I’d go with Deep Work vs. Shallow Work. But I wanted something a little more powerful than that so I played around with Profound Work vs. Shallow Work. But that wasn’t quite it either. Then, as I was reviewing our Notes on several of Steven Pressfield’s BRILLIANT books on doing great work, a choir of daimon-angels sang. (Note: If you haven’t checked out our Notes on The War of Art, Do the Work, Turning Pro and The Artist’s Journey, I HIGHLY recommend all those books.) Here’s the passage from The Artist’s Journey that got the daimon-angels singing: “Have you read The Soul’s Code by James Hillman? I highly recommend it. In The Soul’s Code, Mr. Hillman introduces the concept of the daimon. Daimon is a Greek word. The equivalent term in Latin is genius. Both words refer to an inhering spirit. We are born, each of us (says James Hillman) with our own individual daimon. The daimon is our guardian. It knows our destiny. It kens our calling. James Hillman makes an analogy to an acorn. The totality of the full-grown oak is contained— every leaf and every branch—already within the acorn.” “AHA!!!” I said to myself as I remembered that the Romans used the word genius for the Greek word daimon. GENIUS WORK. ← That’s the target. And the distinction was clear: Genius Work vs. Mediocre Work. When we do GENIUS Work, we’re high-fiving our inner daimons and giving the world all we’ve got. When we get stuck in the middle of that rugged mountain of excellence and there’s a gap between what we’re capable of doing and what we’re actually doing? We do mediocre work. HOW do we do GENIUS Work? Simple. We focus on the key variables of our Genius Work equation: (Energy x Focus x What’s Important) Consistency That’s Today’s +1. How’s your Energy? How’s your Focus? You working on What’s Truly Most Important? And, most importantly, are you doing all that Consistently? Here’s to doing some Genius Work. TODAY.
"Choose your friends wisely" is something all parents tell their children growing up. However, it isn't a message just for kids or teens. Every day adults, likewise, allow a multitude of voices into their world that seek to influence their allegiances, opinions, thoughts, and ultimately, their worship. All voices are welcome, but not all voices are good. Today we look at what it means to walk in wisdom as we choose the voices and company we allow to have access to our hearts. With the chaos of 2020, many organizations were forced to take their high-touch in-person PMO practices and go 100% virtual overnight, but is that sustainable? In this episode, you’ll learn:
Meat is complicated. Political, divisive and often polarizing. The most common story told focuses on factory farmed cows. Hormone injected and antibiotic-laden, red meat is inextricably linked to an array of human illnesses. Resource and waste intensive, beef is inarguably environmentally damning. And perhaps the most ethically fraught.A typical response among many? Swap that beef for chicken.America's favorite meat, chicken constitutes a staggering 95% of all factory-farmed animals. The U.S. currently consumes 9 billion chickens per year with worldwide numbers in the 50 billion range. That's about 137 million chickens a day. Every day.But is chicken actually healthier than beef? Is it more environmentally responsible or ethical in comparison to other alternatives?Today Leah Garcés joins the podcast with a public service announcement: everything you think you know about chicken is wrong. The new president of the international non-profit Mercy for Animals, Leah Garcés has spent her life on the frontlines of the animal welfare movement exposing what actually transpires inside industrial chicken farms. Devoted to improving conditions for factory-farmed animals, she has made significant progress not through a traditional strategy of antagonism, but instead by pursuit of cooperation, working alongside some of the largest food and agriculture companies in the world -- including Perdue, Popeye’s, Panera & Chipotle -- to produce positive change. In her new book, Leah chronicles her experience teaming up with whistleblowers in the megafarm industry. Part memoir, part investigative thriller, Grilled: Turning Adversaries into Allies to Change the Chicken Industry is a great read that not only elucidates the ills of our broken food system, but also casts an optimistic lens on a better future for food, animals, and humans. Most impressive is Leah's profound empathy. Not just for the animals, but for the people most animal rights folks consider the enemy: the factory-farmers; the slaughterhouse workers; and the corporate executives that control animal intensive farming.Rather than fight against these people, Leah adopted a different approach, working with them instead. It's a tactic that might strike the hardened animal rights activist as anathema. Controversial and perhaps even unacceptable. But the cornerstone of the vegan movement is compassion. And lasting change can only come from directing that emotion not just to the animals, but to all — including the people behind the animals.Today we unpack all of it.It's a conversation about the insidious reality of industrial chicken farming. An exploration of the modern-day farmer's plight as an indentured servant. And the industrial complex that entrenches our broken and undeniable cruel system of food production. But ultimately, this is a conversation about empathy. It’s about practicing what you preach. And the strategies required to create sustainable change to forge a better world for all.The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Note: For those who shut down at the mere mention of animal rights, I ask only that you set aside your preconceived judgments. Because this conversation isn’t just about the suffering of animals. It’s about the suffering of people. And it’s about a system that is hoodwinking us all, including the chicken farmer with his boots in the ground.Final Note: this conversation was recorded pre-pandemic on January 31, 2020. Our world has since changed. But given what we are learning about the relationship between large-scale intensive animal farming and the propagation of disease, Leah's message, experience and wisdom is more relevant now than everI am grateful for Leah's advocacy and passion. May you find this conversation as impactful as I did.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsDaily Harvest: Daily Harvest makes it easy to eat more fruits and vegetables with thoughtfully sourced, chef-crafted foods that are ready in five minutes or less.
