It's not uncommon to find ourselves shouldering the blame for things that were never truly our vault. What if we approached these situations with a different perspective? What if we embraced self-compassion as a catalyst for growth and healing instead of berating ourselves for our supposed errors? In this episode, I'm talking about making errors, the need for control, what happens when we have self-compassion, and the benefits of outside accountability.   When You Find Yourself Making a Lot of Errors You might need someone to hold space for you. You might need action coaching. Remember to have compassion for yourself and the circumstances. Find the lesson in your errors.   Self-Compassion and Errors I know I'm not alone when I say that I recently took on the blame for something that wasn't my fault. This is incredibly common to do. Did you know that we do it because it puts us back in control of the situation? One of the reasons for my recent error was because I was in emotional dysregulation. Yes, you can get into emotional dysregulation even from positive emotions, like excitement – anything that sends your emotions out of their normal flow can put you in a state where you're not thinking clearly. When you find that you've made an error, I want to encourage you to find compassion for yourself. It's within your self-compassion that you find the lessons and the learnings from your error. This is such an important step towards healing.   Healing From Your Errors Healing from your errors is also essential. That's why we need to talk about our mistakes. What did you do? How did you feel? What have you learned from it? It's okay to err. You have permission to make mistakes. But please talk about it. If, like me, you need some guidance to help you through your errors, I'd recommend seeking outside help. Outside accountability, like a psychiatrist, is beneficial because you know someone other than yourself is checking on your progress. I'd love to hear about an error you've made recently. How did you feel when you made it? What lessons did you learn when you took time to reflect and have self-compassion? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  Why we often blame ourselves even when things aren't our fault [11:00] How we can experience dysregulation from positive emotions [12:30] What you can learn from having self-compassion [13:30] Why it's healing to talk about your errors [16:30] Why you might need outside accountability [21:00] How to find the lesson in your errors [25:30]   Quotes “I blamed myself. Why? Because when you blame yourself, you take it on as yours and you put yourself back in control. Not in a healthy way.” [10:47] “Dysregulation with our emotions isn't always negative emotions. It can be positive emotions.” [12:42] “If you're ever thinking that you're failing or you're not doing something that you said you would do, you may need accountability to your boundaries.” [21:13] “If you are getting a result that you like, still be careful about the story you're telling yourself. If you're getting positive reinforcement or the results that you want, and your story doesn't really have facts in it, it's still just a story.” [26:49]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  Episode 186: A Quest to Good Mothering with Heather Chauvin Episode 185: Emotionally Regulated Parenting Episode 184: Setting Boundaries Starting with Self

Have you ever dreamed of starting a private practice that brought in six figures? When many people think of starting their own private practice, they think of it as a side income, but it doesn't have to be. You can grow it as much or as little as you want. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my Start Your Private Practice students, Samantha Asher, to talk about how she grew her private practice to six figures while only working 3 days a week. She is able to support her family financially with her private practice and also be there for her kids every day. Samantha Asher, MA, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and the CEO of Green Light Speech and Language Services, LLC. Green Light specializes in providing effective feeding, language, and speech therapy that children genuinely enjoy. Samantha built Green Light on the principles of responsive feeding and parent-child-therapist collaboration. Samantha also develops and shares content about responsive feeding and therapy strategies through her Instagram page @greenlightspeechtherapy. Outside of the speech world, Samantha is a loving, happy wife and mother. She has two young children and a large rescue pup.In Today's Episode, We Discuss:The tremendous need for private practicesWhy it's completely normal to be nervousThe benefits of having a community of people on the same journeyHow Samantha managed her private practice while moving to a new stateHow to know it's time to take your private practice full-timeWhy it's okay to ask for reviewsHiring team membersSamantha's plans for her private practice moving forwardWe all want the time to spend with our families while still providing for them. She was able to build a six-figure private practice while only working three days a week and taking her daughter to ballet class. The possibilities really are endless. If you're feeling in doubt about anything in your life, I encourage you to create more space. Creating space allows you to make more authentic decisions, have more self-compassion, and have the insight to move in the best direction for you at that moment. In this episode, I'm talking all about creating space and the levels you might experience on the way there while sharing some real-life examples.   The Levels of Creating Space No awareness, falling into old habits, and people-pleasing. Reacting to what happened and being aware that you're reacting but without insight Willing to create space and have time to have the insight Making the decision to honor your authentic self, to move in whatever direction feels appropriate for you   When in Doubt, Create Space Creating space to evaluate any situation is one of the most important things you can do in your life. Giving yourself the space to step back and see the bigger picture will have a profound impact on how you feel, how you interact with others, and how you make your decisions. When you create space, it gives you the perspective to decide how you want to move forward in a way that feels the most authentic to you. It's a gift you give yourself that allows you to put yourself first and truly honor yourself, your boundaries, and your true desires.   The Levels of Creating Space There are levels or steps you need to take to start creating space. Each step will take you closer to finding what feels good and making more authentic decisions. Creating space is deciding what is yours to fix. Deciding where your role is, what you're supposed to, or choose to do. One important aspect of creating space is self-compassion. Self-compassion is treating yourself like you would treat your friends and others – with love and grace. When you show yourself self-compassion, you're giving yourself permission to set and honor your boundaries. And, with your boundaries, permission to create space. How can you create more space in your life? What steps do you need to honor to feel more authentically yourself? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  Why creating space is so important [3:30] Why it's important to set boundaries that feel good [8:30] Why you have to find what feels good [19:30] How to give yourself self-compassion [20:30]   Quotes “When you create that space, so many different things will come up. Very importantly: it will give you the opportunity to decide how you want to authentically proceed. That is really important.” [7:21] “When in doubt, create space. If you can create space, that's when you can realize how to balance your energy in a favorable way toward yourself. That, ultimately, is going to serve you very well.” [9:00] “Creating space is deciding that this is not ours to fix. Deciding where your role is, what you're supposed to do here, or what you choose to do here.” [17:33] “Creating space, when in doubt, will get you to that space where you can authentically be who you are, show up as you are, and all of those amazing things.” [20:15]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  Episode 165: 30-Minutes-A-Day  Episode 168: Self-Care Through Real Conversations with Dr. Kristi Angevine  Episode 171: In Health and Business with Frenchie Ferenczi

This one is for my girls. It's also for your girls. And it's for all of us women who are navigating our way through this world. In this episode, I'm talking to my girls. I'm sharing how I'm helping them gain awareness and experience, how to learn about their thought patterns, and how to be strong, independent women. This one is also for us mothers – the past doesn't matter. How can you connect and build awareness with your daughters?   Key Takeaways It doesn't matter how many times you've baked cookies. It doesn't matter how many times you've said yes or no. It doesn't matter what you did when they were younger. It doesn't matter if you are working so much that you only have a certain amount of time to spend on a daily basis. It doesn't matter. All that matters is the awareness that you have for each other. It's going to be that awareness that allows you to grow together now. It doesn't matter what happened then, and even the future isn't a great focus. But right now, in this moment, how can you become aware, and how can you connect now?   Learning From Our Daughters Our children can teach us just as much as we teach them if we're willing to listen and learn. Each experience of motherhood is different, we all have our own journey, and even within those journeys, each child will teach us something new. Spending time with my daughters is a joy. From having postpartum depression at the birth of my first daughter to now experiencing all of life's emotions, it's the biggest pleasure I have. I love to teach them about themselves and how to be stronger than their thoughts.   Helping Our Daughters Learn Awareness From my daughters, I learned the power of flexibility and how being flexible helps reduce the triggers I might face. It's about creating awareness and helping our daughters learn awareness. About themselves, about life, about their relationships with others, and so much more. It's not about being there every second of the day; in fact, I think it's so powerful for our daughters to see women succeed in their careers. It's about being there when it matters. Listening, creating better experiences for your daughters, and doing all we can to nurture and help our wonderful girls grow into incredible, well-adjusted, and flexible women. How do you define your experiences as a parent? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  What we can learn from our children [10:00] The reality of flexibility and triggers [13:30] Whether or not you have to make every second count [15:45] Why it's powerful for girls to see women succeed in their careers [16:00]   Quotes “The way that I look at my daughters is [asking], what can I teach them? What can they teach me?” [9:47] “I think what we can do for the girls, for all the girls, for all of our girls, as we go through it and as we do this work on our own, is to help them gain awareness.” [12:48] “If you're struggling with thinking that you're not showing up enough, or that you haven't done the right thing from the beginning, or all the things that you're doing wrong… Think about all the things that you are doing so very right.” [16:48] “As a parent, I can help create experiences by listening. These are basic, simple things that have really transformed how I view myself as a mom so that I can gain greater acceptance for myself.” [24:10] “When I start to think and question who I am as a mom, how I'm showing up for the girls, how I can do better, I realize that whatever has happened in the past has happened, and that's that. All I have is this moment, and all I can do is make the next best decision as their mom in this moment. What does that look like? It looks like holding the safe space for them to be their individuals, knowing that they can get through anything.” [27:53]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  Episode 164: Break The Rules Episode 168: Self-Care Through Real Conversations with Dr. Kristi Angevine Episode 166: Energetic Protection for Empaths

Your muscle mass is one of the best indicators of your long-term health. There are so many long-term health benefits to building your muscles, and all it takes is eating enough protein and lifting weights. It's never too late to start building your muscles, and the benefits are so many. In this episode, I break down the reality of the traditional scale, how to build muscle mass for your body type, and so much more.   To Gain Muscle Mass, You Have To Commit To: Moving your muscles Feeding your body   Let's Make Some Muscle Building muscle mass is one of the best things you can do for your long-term health. There are benefits to your longevity, your skeletal bone mass, and even your insulin resistance. Many women shy away from gaining muscle because they don't want to get bulky – but that's just one of the common misconceptions of muscle gain. Making the decision to start gaining muscle is something that will benefit you in so many ways. Think about if it's the right goal for your body. You also need to consider how your body type will respond to strength training. But overall, it is never too late to start making changes to your body composition.   Muscle Gain for a Long Life If you're only using a traditional scale to measure your weight loss, that's simply not giving you the whole picture. We feel so much pressure from all around us to fit into the neat little boxes that society thinks we should. What if I told you that you don't need to fit in? Life will expand for you when you're living as your authentic self. This episode is all about curating your space to honor the truth of who you are.   How to Curate the Space We Are Meant to Fit Into Define who you are and how you show up Cut the ties of the things keeping you where you are  Stick with the people that want to help you grow Dive into what you desire   Stop Trying to Fit In Curating your life starts with self-reflection. Look at the things in your life that impact YOU. What's going well in your life? What's not? Examining your own life is the essential first step to defining who you are and what you want out of your life. You might find that some parts of your life don't serve you. While this is difficult to realize, removing these parts of your life will positively impact your becoming the truest version of yourself. It's about curating the space you want to live in, where you can truly be yourself.   Curate Your Space Go beyond where you've gone before. Step outside your comfort zone. That comfort zone probably isn't even comfortable, is it? It's just where society says you should be comfortable. Surround yourself with people who will support you throughout your changes. Who encourages you to step into the best version of yourself, who will be there to help you grow. These people are the good ones that belong in your curated space. Are you willing to go into a space that is custom curated for you? Let me know in the comments on the episode page what it will take for you to get there.   In This Episode  The importance of examining your own life [1:00] Why we need to curate space that fits us perfectly [5:15] What it looks like to go where you haven't gone before [16:45] The importance of supportive people [24:30]   Quotes “When we direct things inward, what we do is focus on things that we can control.” [2:05] “Doesn't it seem interesting that our pursuit in life and our quest in life is to find out who we are authentically? When we are born, we are authentically us. I believe that a lot of the qualities that we show very early on are authentically us.” [4:04] “I was always this person. I was always meant to be who I am. Always. It doesn't matter what circumstance happened, the circumstances allowed me to see myself. They allowed me to come into my own, they allowed me to know me better.” [13:31] “Where it's more comfortable isn't actually comfortable. It's what society says will be comfortable if you can just do it perfectly.” [16:17] “If you are surrounding yourself in spaces where others are not owning their own emotional health, their own feelings… Get out. Or set a boundary. Or do something. That is going to prohibit your growth into your own space that you deserve to be in.” [25:39] “Don't fit into spaces that you were never supposed to fit into. That's not the most road traveled.” [29:59]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  Episode 164: Break The Rules Episode 165: 30-Minutes-A-Day Episode 166: Energetic Protection for Empaths

You can break the rules. It might feel uncomfortable and push you out of your comfort zone, but a certain level of freedom comes when you don't listen to the rules. Rules are just your boundaries and the boundaries you have with other people. Think about your own rules – how can you break them?   Some of the Rules You Can Break Work smarter, not harder You don't have to fix the problem You can spend the holidays at home   Break the Rules I was talking with my coach recently. They challenged me to explore what it would mean to break the rules – my own rules. If you're like me, you have many rules you subscribe to. Some you've made yourself, while others come from society. What if I told you that you could break those rules? You can break any rule, especially if they're difficult, uncomfortable, or they feel suffocating.  I do this, especially when it comes to weight loss and health. It's all about working smarter, not harder (though you can apply that to any aspect of your life). I've seen my clients make so much more progress working smarter, not harder, in their exercise and nutrition routines.   Rules are Just Boundaries I also encourage you to consider that you don't have to solve a problem. Not all problems need to be solved – sometimes, you just need to sit with something that isn't broken. Break the rule that tells you that you have to solve every problem. What rule-breaking comes down to is your boundaries. Rules are the boundaries you have with yourself, first and then with other people. You just need to remember that other people have their own boundaries and rules, and they don't have to prescribe to your rules and boundaries. Think about what your rules are and how you can break them. What are some of your rules that feel suffocating? Let me know in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  What it means to work smarter, not harder [4:00] How breaking the rules makes you more human [9:00] What it looks like to break your own rules [9:30] Some of the fitness rules that need to break [14:00] Why you have to let other people make their own rules, too [25:30]   Quotes “We broke our own rule only to find out that we have people now who are achieving the results that they really want.” [5:49] “We want slow results and change. We want this because we want to work through every bit of change.” [21:30] “The idea is, and breaking the rule of, we don't have to solve the problem. The old rule was to solve the problem and fix it. New rule, breaking the rule, is that we don't have to fix the problem. How can we actually go ahead and sit with something that isn't broken?” [22:39] “This is all about boundaries. Rules are kind of the boundaries you have with yourself, first, and then the boundaries you have with others. We also have to be mindful of other people's rules.” [25:43] “I want to really encourage you. Break some safe rules. The rules that, if you break them, everything is fine still. I want you to practice it. I want you to practice being aware of your initial reaction to certain things and see if there's a rule tied up in there. Then I would like you to think about breaking that rule, just a little bit. What would have to change to go against that rule?” [27:12]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes  Episode 133: Uncomfortable Growth  Episode 143: The Power of Asking for Help  Episode 153: Lose Stress Not Carbs
